So... an Asian style restaurant serving Korean, Thai, and Chinese food at a Mexican resort catering to mostly Americans seems like it has the potential to go really bad, but these guys pulled it off. We all left full and happy! Service was top notch but a little on the slow side. The kitchen made great food but they were in no hurry to make it or to get it out to us. Likewise, once we had finished dinner they just allowed us to sit and twiddle our thumbs, and no one thought about bringing a check to our perfectly cleaned off table until we asked for it. Tried Zao Shen Asian Kitchen recently, and it was a mixed experience for me. A few dishes really stood out, but overall it wasn't quite my favorite. The Bang Bang Shrimp was probably the best thing I tried...it was crispy, spicy, and super flavorful. I also liked the Bulgogi and the Crispy Shrimp, both were solid choices and definitely worth ordering again. On the flip side, the Chow Mein Noodles, Kung Pao Chicken, Orange Chicken, and Wonton Soup didn't quite hit the mark. The veggies were sweet potato, carrot, green beans, a few asparagus tips and a lot of zucchini. And I mean a lot. It was covered in a Sriracha sauce creamy. It's good but you will want extra. For the mains, the spouse went with the honey chicken. Lots there. The key is to dip it into the sauce below it, otherwise it lacks flavor. I went with the dynamite shrimp. I have the pepper shrimp, the crispy tofu, and the pokey salad and it was really delicious. The tofu was OK. I thought it was gonna be like cut up fried tofu. It was OK. The pepper shrimp was good. I only had like three or four shrimp though, but I really enjoyed my pokey salad and I enjoyed my birthday treat at the end the service was good, my sister loved their Seabass dish. My boyfriend and I are both Chinese so we had our doubts when seeing this Chinese restaurant on site, so we almost waited until our last days to finally give it a try. The orange chicken was much different than orange chicken you find in the USA but it was amazing! Probably my favorite dish! The hot and sour soup was really good too. The food isn't quite the same as American Chinese, but it hit the spot. We had the tempura green beans (the breading was very nicely seasoned and they were good and crisp), orange chicken (not crispy and very runny sauce totally unlike American orange chicken), pepper beef steak (really great flavor. Our favorite dish here), chow mein (pretty standard), honey shrimp (again, nothing like honey walnut shrimp, but tasty), hot and sour soup, and wonton soup. The hot and sour soup and wonton soups were nothing like in the US. The wonton soup tasted more like knorr chicken soup from a packet, with a single wonton. The hot and sour had cilantro in it and was weird, but not bad. I finished a lot more of it than I meant to. We ended up with leftovers that we took back to our room and ate later cold and they were delicious. It was a nice option for all inclusive, even if it wasn't quite what we expected. Our waiter didn't judge us for ordering a ridiculous amount of stuff and was nice. For a surcharge-free all-inclusive dining option it was good. read more

On the all inclusive plan we ate here on a Thursday night after swimming and working out at the gym. Note: plates are small and EXPENSIVE, so avoid unless you have all-inclusive. Taste was flat and doughy. "Asian " tacos were lettuce wraps with grilled chicken, mushrooms and rice noodles. They were good. Entrees: 1. Gong Bao shrimp - 5 stars; Excellent & authentic 2. Teriyaki Flank Steak -4 stars 3. Pork Ribs with Anise - 3 stars; too sweet 4. Grilled Sea Bass in Ginger and red vinegar- 1 star. Ruined! Unfortunately, the Sea Bass had no discernible "vinegar sauce reduction". This dish was ruined with SUGAR, destroying a beautiful Bass. No, umm, by the looks of the empty restaurant inside, we explained that we were not aware that we needed reservations. We tried to make reservations at the Japanese restaurant last night (which was very crowded) and they didn't accept them. So, our mistake for the assumption. The gracious hostess announced that she would make an exception, this once. (Btw, when we left, the place was still empty). We dined outside. It was a gorgeous evening. Bugs and birds, but a great night to dine Al Fresco. Our server Luis was very friendly and made sure we had a great experience! If you like PF Changs, this place is for you. Rice doesn't come with any meals and when you order it you receive a 1/2 cup portion at an exorbitant price. Someone in our group ordered the fortune cook off of the dessert menu thinking it was likely to be a large cookie with some sort of topping. But, no, it was a regular fortune cookie in a plastic wrapper. You know, the kind that comes free in any Chinese restaurant. The price: $9.00. My advice - avoid this restaurant. The Mongolian Beef at the Market Food Court is much better, larger, and cheaper! read more

On the second night we tried to eat here, we finally got in. The first night we didn't have reservations and got turned away. The night we went, we had reservations but still did not get to sit all together, a disappointment (why did we make reservations?!?) This place is loud, it is very hard to hear, particularly if you're seated in a larger group (we were sat in a group of 8 and a group of 4, I was in the group of 8). It's tough when an organization like Pueblo Bonito tries to excel at all these different types of food. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. In this case, it did not. The green bean appetizers were a hit. But the entrees were not great. These were not authentic Chinese flavors, dishes tasted flat. I suppose most good reviews is because people are on vacation mode when visiting this place; my view is that a place should be reviewed based on what it presented to you, not what your mood was. I ordered the Mangolian beef, which based on their menu's description is one of their most favorite foods. What I received instead was about 10 square pieces of 0.5 inch (no exaggeration here, the portion was that small) of burnt meat with 10 long strings of green onion, which tasted awful. Where do I even begin? My girlfriend and I were in Cabo celebrating my birthday; we read all of the great reviews and decided this would be the perfect place to go that night. Nowhere in ANY of the patron write-ups, or even on the website itself, did it say you need reservations. There are several restaurants at this resort and only Quivira Steakhouse and LaFrida specifically state a reservation is required. So we take a cab over and are denied entry at the resort entrance due to a lack of a reservation. We explain we didn't see one was needed and ask if maybe the restaurant could accommodate us since we were already there? No. Cab ride back to our resort. $32 wasted. By now we're more than a little upset, so we call the restaurant to express our frustration. We spoke with Jaime. We explained the issue -- it didn't say "reservations were needed," etc -- and the best he could offer us was, "Well, it doesn't say you DON'T need reservations. Uh...no. Way wrong answer. Now we want to speak to the manager. Helpful Jaime says he's not there and we can call tomorrow at 8:00am to speak to Omar, the hotel manager. We call the hotel the next morning and ask to speak with Omar. The person on the other end asks us why we want to talk to Omar. We explain why. He asks us if we're guests at the resort. We say no, we're calling in regard to the restaurant, as instructed last night. We're put on hold for a couple of minutes only to be told Omar isn't in. It's at that point we gave up on hoping to discuss this with anyone in a professional capacity and decided to take to Yelp. There are tons of places to eat in Cabo, and I'd recommend any of them over Zao Shen. read more

Made reservations the night before and got a 7pm rsvp for a Friday night. We ended up finishing at the spa next at around 6pm and figured we'd try to see if they could get us in earlier. Luckily they were able to take us in an hour early. We got seated very quickly and was greeted by our waiter. The cocktails were weak, so I ended up just getting liquor on the rocks. I had initially ordered a jack and coke, let's just say it tasted like watered down coke. Now, the food. They had a fairly extensive menu and I was pleasantly surprised to see that they had an entire vegetarian section. Being vegan, I was extremely excited for all the options! They were also accommodating when I mentioned I had dietary restrictions, and I was really appreciative in their efforts to make me a variety of veggie dishes I could eat. All in all, I'd definitely recommend checking the place out! Make sure to make a reservation in advance! A family of 8 (4 kids, 4 adults) that was in line ahead of us unfortunately couldn't get seated because they didn't rsvp.
