Zasu is a quaint restaurant on Carrollton near Canal. If you blink you might miss it but that would be a shame. I dined here last night and the service was great, attentive without hovering. I started with the hamachi crudo which was delicious. If I had stopped there I would've left happy because the flavors and textures were great! Of course I didn't stop there and the subsequent courses were also just as delightful. I had the day's special which was triple tail with potatoes, kale and shitake mushrooms with a spicy beurre blanc sauce that was also really good! We finished dinner with the apple crumb cake and butter pecan ice cream. It was the perfect culmination to a great dinner. I definitely will be adding Zasu to my rotation of great restaurants I frequent in the city. read more

Zasu has been remodeled since the last time I dined here many years ago. The dining room is now nice and cozy. I wouldn't recommend coming with a large group--no more than four people--given the limited space and portion sizes, especially if you enjoy family-style dining. The short rib entrée was a 3.8/5. While flavorful, it was slightly on the drier side, and the mashed purée portion underneath was very small. The okra king salmon was amazing and paired perfectly with the vegetables. The veal sweetbreads were crispy on the outside and very buttery on the inside. Overall, the flavors of most dishes were delicious and unique. I can see why they earned a Michelin star. The pistachio cheesecake wasn't too sweet, and we enjoyed every bite. Service was outstanding--from the host to our waiter and the entire dining room staff. Fine dining without the stuffiness. Expert service from the waitress that felt genuine. The dining area's design is thoughtful and elegant. Even the chairs were impressively chic yet comfortable. We tried all of the apps and I got the beef short rib. The beef was so succulent and salted to perfection. My gin martini was expertly crafted and kicked off my meal. The other stand out dishes were the sweet breads, the pork belly, and the pistachio cheesecake. Eating at this Michelin star restaurant was a treat and I felt very taken care of by the staff. Chef Sue Z is a gem. Her dishes have incredible quality while her sauces and tastes are subtle and sophisticated. This restaurant is a small venue in an old home. The ambiance is great. The noise level is not bad. The food is excellent, EXCELLENT. Tuna Crudo with fried capers is a not miss dish. We loved the daily special Red Fish. Excellent seasoning and accompanying veggies. The Braised Beef Short-ribs melts in your mouth. So welled cooked with sauces that kiss the dish instead of overpowering it. The pistachio cheese cake is over the top. This was our 1st visit to Zazu & it will surely now not be our last. It is located quite far from Canal St. & center of town but the experience well worth the uber journey. The restaurant is small & located in what appears to once have been a residential home/cottage but has been transformed into a charming & eclectic dining destination. We were lucky enough to be seated in a booth in the back of the restaurant allowing for a more roomy & romantic time. Our server was so kind & full of energy & you could tell enjoyed where she worked. The food was all very well executed on a Michelin level & bursted with unique flavors that opened your palate & made you longing for your visit. I was treated to a birthday dinner at Zasu, and the experience was absolute perfection. Every dish served was set with intention, down to the order in which we received our food and with a meticulous table clean between them. Our server was kind and attentive, and the interior was intimate and lively. The portion sizes were plentiful and we had plenty leftovers to take home. Zasu deserved that Michelin star, and I am super eager to come back and try more of their well-crafted food. The 12 o'clock meat was well placed and the 6 o clock food tastes as good as the 12 o'clock main meat. Ambience was conducive for eating with a little privacy specially when seated in the booth. What a fabulous night at "Zasu " in Nola , our first Michelin Star restaurant and shared with our beautiful granddaughter Allie! The food was exceptional! It was everything you expect a Michelin star restaurant to be. Ambience was charming, service was good and the food was fabulous! Oh my goodness! And then I asked to meet the chef and we were able to. Allie and I walked to the kitchen door and she came out and chatted and was so exceptionally charming and then I asked if she'd speak to Greg and she sure but said she needed to put on her chefs coat . she did come to the table and spent at least 5 minutes talking with us. She was so pleasant and down to earth. That really topped the night off! Thank you Zasu, Chef Sue Zemanick! We shared several dishes. Tuna crudo, pear and marscapone agnolotti, crab claws, red snapper with gnocchi, corn and seafood soup, beef short ribs, chocolate almond buddino, pistachio cheesecake, apple crumb cake with butter pecan ice cream and it was all mouth watering! I had such high expectations for this place after they earned a Michelin star. I just don't understand it. The service was great but the food was just okay. We ordered all the apps: octopus, hamachi, sweetbreads, marinated crab claws, tortellini, mushroom soup, little gem salad. For entrees, the short ribs, the flounder special and the pierogi. Dessert was the apple bread thing, cheesecake & chocolate budino. The mushroom soup was good but everything else was just okay. It lacked flavor and depth and creativity. An amazing dinning experience! Every meal was clean, vibrant, and evenly paced. The wait staff was always present yet almost invisible. Dessert ended with a Pistachio cheese cake that was dense but not heavy, almost like a warm brownie could be. Delicious cocktails made a tailored list hard yet fun to choose from. Last but not least, the atmosphere is calming, Zasu's filled dinning room had a dampening effect where every table had their own private converstation. Zasu in New Orleans is a culinary heaven. I love having a woman chef at the helm, especially one as skilled in seafood as Chef Sue Zemanick. This place is perfect for seafood lovers and those who appreciate the creative magic of a chef truly in her element. Our meal spanned the seafood spectrum, and I couldn't help but turn it into a tapas-style tasting experience to try multiple dishes. The blue crab fettuccini was creamy and rich. The snapper was tender and beautifully presented. The hamachi crudo was the favorite, with a subtle horseradish kick that added a fresh, spicy contrast to the fish. Then there were the scallops, seared with a golden crust with a meltingly tender in the center. The gem salad was crisp and refreshing, which I used as a palate cleanser between bites. Let's get the things that could have been better out of the way. The inside was a little underwhelming. Every inch of wall is green, even though the green, brown and gold accents go very well together, it was an interesting choice for a Michelin star restaurant. But I'm not an interior designer so I digress. That concludes the things that could have been better. If you're like me, you go check the one star reviews of places. There's only a few for Zasu. The one that stuck out to me was the guy complaining about portion sizes. Not exactly sure what he eats on a daily basis but this was plenty of food. If you want enormous portions that you can't finish, go literally anywhere else in Nola. Every course was portioned out perfectly in my opinion. Jeffrey was our lovely waiter who took great care of us! The item names are captioned in the pictures. Everything was wonderful but dessert was my favorite. The apple crumb cake had an apple cider reduction that I've never had before and it was delicious. Don't even get me started on how good that butter pecan ice cream was either! The pistachio cheesecake was well balanced. Not super sweet but rich. The whipped cream was not sweet on its own but when eaten with the cheesecake you realize the chef knew what they were doing. It balanced out the flavor profile of the dessert and kept it from being sickly sweet. If those two desserts are on the menu when you visit, I would highly recommend! This is a small and intimate dining area and once filled, can be quite loud. We had an 8:30 reservation and by the second course most of the other diners were finishing up and leaving. While eating dessert we ended up having the whole place to ourselves. Really amped up the ambiance and romantic aspect. Getting a later reservation is also highly recommended. read more

Worst Michelin-Star Experience in 20+ Years This was, without question, the worst dining experience we've had in 20+ years of eating at Michelin-star restaurants worldwide--including places like Les Morainières in Paris and our regular spots, Le Bernardin and Masa in NYC (with my highly trained service dog). We came to Zasu excited--especially to support a female Michelin-starred chef. Even planning to order more than what we ended up ordering. We "unfortunately" arrived early (after an expensive Uber to a very out-of-the-way location), and from the start, the experience went downhill. I have an invisible disability, and my medical alert service dog must remain in contact with me. This has never been an issue anywhere else in the world. We even added a note to the reservation "coming with a small SA". Here, it was met with attitude immediately. Then came our server, easily the worst server I've ever encountered. She approached us with visible irritation, rolled her eyes at me and down at my dog, avoided eye contact most of the dinner, and spoke in a fast, curt and robotic tone. Emotionless. Meanwhile, she was warm, friendly, and engaging with every other table around us. Especially with the other female patrons. The contrast was striking and impossible to ignore. For us, she rushed through specials with zero explanation, was clearly condescending when we only order a few dishes "to share", but gave detailed, friendly recommendations to others. We went from planning a full meal to ordering the bare minimum just to leave quickly. Service only got worse: Food rushed out with no pacing Spilled water left on the table the entire time Several eye rolls in our direction A dirty plate given only to me with our main, then she disappeared. We had to wait for someone (the manager) to replace it while our entree got cold. As for the food--everything leaned dry - pork belly very dry, baby octopus dry and extra chewy, the potatoes seasoned on the saltier side (which we expected being in New Orleans), but everything came out so fast, most dishes were cold by the time we could eat them--making it even harder to enjoy as it was intended. To the manager's credit, they comped the entire meal, apologized, and offered to remake everything or have us return. But honestly, why would we go out of our way again after this experience? Especially when the roundtrip Uber alone was expensive--and by the time this was over, it was too late to eat anywhere else. Even the apology from the server felt condescending--raising her voice and speaking over me while I was still talking. By the end, I was physically and visibility shaken from how uncomfortable and unwelcome I felt. The entire night was ruined by one person. If this is Michelin-star service, I question how the star was earned. No one--especially someone with a disability-- whether it's hidden--or not--should never be made to feel this way in a restaurant. Avoid if you value basic respect and hospitality. read more

So yummy. We had a fantastic meal, and felt like it was worth every penny. We love restaurants that do good service, interesting and super yummy food at a price that hits value. If we think it's a do again, if we wish we could eat more, we know it's a winner. We ate at a lot of high end places during our visit, and Zasu was so a do again. Truly a terrific meal. Zasu continues to be one of the absolute best restaurants in NOLA, it's a homey upscale space near Carrollton & Canal with great food and drink. I've been quite a few times, including their recent Endymion watch party during the Mardi Gras weekend where the crowd size was perfect for the space, service was great, and food was excellent even within the buffet setup which they normally don't do. They had quite a few off-menu items which were house-made and all amazing (I won't even name everything since you probably won't see it on the menu again), along with some menu staples such as Tuna Crudo, Snapper, Salmon, Oysters, Beluga Lentils, etc. and everyone in my group agreed that all the food was top notch. Definitely not a surprise. If you live in NOLA or if you're in from out of town, you will rarely if ever go wrong with Zasu based on my experiences over the past 6 years (plus previous years when Chef Sue was at the helm other restaurants). I do have a little place with creative excellent food we loved everything we ate. Check out Revel bar before or afterwards it's right next-door and one of the best bars in the whole city. Chris McMillian, who created the museum of liquor in New Orleans is a world, renowned bartender and their drinking menu has all of the old classic cocktails - expertly made. The drinks take some time to prepare so go early or don't be in a rush. By the way, the burger was rated the best in New Orleans last year! Very small cozy and unique little place in mid city. It is surprisingly less noisy than expected for the size. It is another place to add to your list of culinary adventures in NOLA! Be adventurous and try the octopus and you will not regret! It is savory and the best I have had since Italy! The tuna crudo is also divine! I would like to preface this by saying that I am in the industry, so I experience things differently from folk who are just guests. This might have been the greatest meal of my entire life. Not only was the food perfectly prepared, but the service and feel of the restaurant was essentially perfect. Our server was Doug, and it was a pleasure talking to him about the wine we had, and the service industry in general. As a wine person, I ordered a bottle of Premier Cru Chablis... Doug insisted on how great a bottle this was... he was NOT WRONG. Before we put any food in our mouths we were treated to a fantastic bottle for a very reasonable price. Once the wine had been poured, and we had drank, the first course came out. We had: the pork belly, the crudo, the soup, and a third app that I cant remember. Every. Single. One. Blew my mind. Then we moved on to the 2nd course, and I generally do not enjoy salad... but the Arugula with fried goat cheese was so masterfully prepared(and SIMPLE!) that it blew me away. Next was the main course, I was the only meat eater in our party, so I ordered the short rib. Talk about precise perfect preparation. Short Rib is not something that is easy to do every single night, but it is evident to me that Chef has Mastered it. I also tried the incredible fish special(of which i cannot remember the build for) but the medley of flavor was spectacular. Finally, Desert was served. We decided to sample all three, the budino, the tart, and the pistachio cheesecake. All three were to die for, decadent in their preparation; they paired beautifully with a glass of port. Some will claim that this place doesn't deserve a star, im sure, this is utter and complete nonsense. I decided to treat myself to a "nice" dinner during my work trip to Nola. This was amazingly delicious food! My sweet potato soup came with 2 perfectly fried and seasoned oysters. The fluke special came atop a warm grilled corn salad that tasted like summer on a plate. If I could have gotten away with licking the dishes I would have! The desert was off-the-charts good. Definitely met the standard of what a Michelin one-star should be. Upon arriving we realized that the patio we would be sitting on was on a busy road near strip malls with flashing police lights and a tattoo parlor sign. It was frigid cold (not their fault) but clearly the heat lamp was not sufficient for 45 degree weather. We wanted to eat quickly but our three dishes took 2 hours to serve. While the scallops and red fish were tasty the salad that took 1 hour to serve was not. For the amount of money they charge, never eat on the patio. read more

I came to NoLa very excited to try Chef Zemanick's restaurant, and am less enthused writing my review. The atmosphere is absolutely enchanting - rich blue with giant enveloping artwork, private booths with humming conversation, glowing lights that emerge sculpturesque from the ceiling. The host staff is inviting and lovely, service and management less polished. I started with the Sweet Potato & Goat Cheese Agnolotti. Flavor and texture was superb, with the sweetness perfectly balanced by the tartness of the goat cheese and some crunch added by the walnuts. Pasta was Al dente, however; would recommend halving size of the agnolotti to maintain firmness of texture & concentrating flavors. I chose the Crunchy Green Salad on recommendation and was saddened that so many beautiful ingredients could turn so tasteless - feta providing the only flavor on the plate, was over salted, and greens needing citrus or some acid to contrast. I don't know how the Jerk Braised Pork Cheeks were served up so tough, but at least the flavors were on point. Chocolate Malt Semifreddo was very frozen and mostly marshmallow... I'd pass. Maybe the carrot cake is a better choice! Menu changes up, so the hope is for some impressive new dishes my next time around. read more

Great and interesting meal. Started with the pork cheeks and that was probably my favorite dish. The pork was slow cooked but had a nice caramelized crunch to it, along with a good combination of vegetables. Followed with an arugula and hazelnut salad, no complaints. For my main, I had the short rib and it was both tasty and filling. I should not have had dessert but given how nice everything else was, I went for the passion fruit semifreddo and was not disappointed. In New Orleans to visit my daughter. I keep a list of places I see featured in articles about great restaurants to try. Zasu was tonight's choice for dinner. This is a darling, little converted house in mid-town NOLA. There is outdoor seating as well as a surprisingly large interior dining room. Booths line the left side. With tables, that can be configured to accommodate a couple or a larger group, on the right hand side. The decor is a monochromatic emerald green, that gives a very elegant feel to the room. Service was excellent and friendly. The sommelier was able to direct us to a lovely bottle of Pinot Noir from the Willamette Valley in Oregon, that went nicely with our selection of Salmon and Short Rib entrees. Both dishes were delicious! The proteins perfectly prepared and complimented by the accompanying side dishes. The delicate blend of spices perfectly accented the vegetables. Prices here are in the $25-30 per entree range. Soup, salad and appetizers are approximately $12-15. This is a beautiful restaurant with excellent food. After reading all the positive reviews online, we were very excited for our reservation, but unfortunately didn't feel the meal lived up to the hype. The restaurant is very small, but well decorated. As mentioned in a few of the other reviews, it is extremely loud once inside. That's great for making the restaurant feel lively, but I wouldn't recommend going expecting to have much of a conversation over dinner. Our waitress disappeared for long stretches of the meal. I'm not sure what she had going on in the back; however, the entire dining room was visible from our table, so it very clearly wasn't other tables keeping her away. When she was available, she was polite enough but certainly not overly friendly. It definitely could have been a bad day, everyone is entitled to those, but it certainly was not the level of service we expected going in. When it came to the food, we started with the scallops which were admittedly delicious, but they unfortunately turned out to be the highlight of the meal. From there we had the braised short rib, which was extremely tender but largely bland, and the salmon, which was also bland with exclusion of the beurre blanc which was far too tangy and over powered the entire dish. All in all, we went in hoping to love it, but in a city with as good of food as New Orleans, you can find far better dining options at half the price. read more
