I retained this firm in June of 2023. My case was in default by March 2024. After two failed attempted to get the packet approved from March to January or 2025, they let the default judgment packet sit idle for 18 months. In June of 2025 defendant's business closed at which time, I requested they request an expedited hearing to get the packet approved. The request was ignored. Instead, they filed continuances without telling me. I was physically sick when I realized the packet they finally submitted after 18 months is substantively identical to the previous packet. Throughout this process, I repeatedly reached out for updates. I often have had to reach out multiple times to get a response and many of the responses I received were confusing, incomplete, or contradicted earlier explanations and the court records. I often felt like I wasn't being given the full picture of what was happening with my case. When I asked for basic case information--billing records, a timeline, an explanation of delays--I was told by Tara Hattendorf my requests were "not reasonable or practicable." When I asked about malpractice insurance, Tara told me I was creating a conflict of interest. I'm sharing my experience because I don't want anyone else to go through the stress, confusion, and emotional toll that I am. I filed a complaint with the State Bar so they can review what happened. But I had never been as injured as I was when I was in a motorcycle accident. When I was looking for a motorcycle accident attorney I found Sergio and his law firm. I wanted to work with someone close by in Los Angeles so I went in and spoke with him about my accident. Sergio asked me everything about the crash and how it happened. I was riding on the highway when I went around a driver who was on my left hand side. When I was changing lanes, he changed as well, but without turning on his blinker. I couldn't swerve in time and he hit my front wheel, causing me to lose control of the bike and fall. I landed hard on the freeway and rolled into the shoulder. The guy who hit me parked and came over to help. He called an ambulance and waited while another car stopped and someone else got out to help. I went to the hospital and was diagnosed with a neck sprain, spinal cord damage, lacerations, and other bodily injuries. I had to get over two dozen stitches for some of the rips. Thankfully the driver who stopped to help was able to get some much needed information for me, like the other driver's license plate and insurance. He texted it to me so I could keep the record in my phone. It turned out I needed to wear a neck brace for a while and I couldn't go back to work for a few weeks. My job as a driver for a taxi company was compromised since I couldn't look behind me and it would be too dangerous for me to be on the road. Sergio was a great listener and really knew what he was talking about when he started to explain all the legal details of what would happen next. He would examine all the evidence I gave him, like the bills from the emergency room and the testimony that I couldn't work, and he'd reach out to the driver who helped and to the responsible driver's insurance company. I was taking painkillers and needed to be re-evaluated to see how the damage healed up, so I didn't have a lot of capabilities. Even more than that, though, Sergio was way more knowledgeable than I was in the field, so I had no issues with him handling the case completely. The driver had full coverage, so Sergio requested compensation for all the damages that racked up - medical bills, my damaged motorcycle (which needed new wheels and had to be repaired because the front part of the frame bent and scraped), my missed wages from work, and pain and suffering damages for emotional trauma. He said it was a lot of standard requests and because I wasn't in the wrong we deserved the maximum. The issue was that the insurance company wasn't going to make it easy. The insurance company didn't reply for days and Sergio had to repeatedly contact them to get them to acknowledge the incident and the claim. He said that a lot of insurance companies tried to stonewall people so they would eventually give up and be happy with whatever was given to them, but he didn't plan on letting that happen. Sergio said that if it was necessary we'd go to trial, and because of the supporting testimony from the other driver and all the evidence we had, there was a very high chance we'd win. A lot of the time, he said, insurance companies didn't want to go to court because they didn't have a great counter to a lot of evidence. Sure enough, after a few months of communication and negotiation, Sergio got the company to send us a check for full compensation for all the damages he requested. What really sold me on Sergio as being the best attorney I could have found was how he handled everything after the case had finished. He was persistent in finding me a good doctor and therapist who would make sure I was fine in the coming weeks. I had never needed any rehabilitation so his efforts made me feel like I was really appreciated and cared for at the firm.
