The ambience is not fancy but the staff (family owned) were very friendly and the food was amazing. We decided against the buffet, which did look good, and ordered the combo appetizer which was very good with hummus, baba ghanooj, falafel, tabouli, grape leaves , fatoosh (one of our favs) 4 bean mint salad (also amazing), and tzatziki. While we were waiting for the app combo, we were served complimentary lentil soup which was also very good! For our main meals we got chicken shawarma and chicken shish both of which come on a bed of biryani. The chicken was flavorful and soooo tender! We were excited to find a middle eastern place that had a buffet on the weekend. If you like to try different dishes this place is for you. Inside there is plenty of seating and it is decorated nicely. It is seat yourself and go up with a plate. The staff were pleasant and checked in with us. Ok the food. There was a hot and cold buffet. Bread, soup, tea/water all available for you to enjoy. The dishes were all super flavorful and we couldn't find a complaint. First time here and finally have a place to get great Mediterranean food! We each ordered shish chicken which is grilled cubes of chicken well seasoned - but not overly salty. It comes with seasoned rice which was delicious and some veggies or hummus. The hummus is vey fresh tasting and really good with the pita bread. We also ordered baba ganoush which we hadn't had in a long time and it was fantastic. There was enough food so that we had leftovers to enjoy the next day! I ordered the chicken shawarma plate and asked if it came with hummus. Since it did not, the staff gave us some to try for free! My mom was visiting from Germany and interested in eating middle eastern food. I liked the idea of having a buffet because I am a picky when it comes to food, so having different options was appealing to me. Thus, we went to Zaytoon on a Saturday later afternoon. After we arrived, the waiter told us that we could sit wherever we want and just go to the buffet. The buffet was great. They had a bunch of vegetarian and non-vegetarian choices available. I loved the Curry Chicken, which I could not even find on the menu when I later checked at home. The Curry Potatoes and ground lamb with delicious as well. 2 rice choices, which was great, pita bread, different teas, etc. They even had sparkling water, which made my mom very happy, and the entire room and especially buffet area was very clean. Don't patronize if you value your property. This was our second time trying this restaurant, we always try a place twice. Not only was the man behind the counter extremely cold and rude, but our property was taken. We left an item of clothing in our booth and within a few minutes of coming back, it was gone. The man working tonight was not helpful at all. No offer to check cameras. Very uninterested with trying to help us locate our property. Whatever he was watching on the tv was more important. A super duper pet peeve... inconsistent hours that cause us to detour for nothing and leave us scrambling for somewhere to eat once we get there. That's not cool when one does their research and even chooses what they want to order. We arrived and there was an open sign plus a sign saying they are closed Mondays and Tuesdays. The door was locked. It's Tuesday! I looked again and Google does say they are closed, but Yelp, and most importantly, their own website say they are open!! Grrrr. Wow, just wow! I don't even have a picture of the food. I opened the top of the Family Meal for 4 and because of the delicious smell of the Lamb Kofta, Shish Chicken, biryani rice and apps I had to move out of the way of the family stampede. The appetizer platter was awesome, a little but of everything including some kibbi, which my teenager had never tried, but then devoured. So let me start by saying they were super. I've on the phone when ordering and during this pandemic they delivered to Leominster. That's about where all the good ends and I'm sorry for that due to the high good ratings. We usually go towards Boston for Mediterranean food but figured we'd try here. So below is what we got and what we thought food wise. Baba Ghanooj - I liked it as it was Smokey and I thought tasty but wife thought it was way to salty. Grape Leaves - very loosely packed no big deal but a little to heavy on the lemon but that's only preference. Over all it was ok. Falafel - was super dry Tzaziki - was so hoping this was going to be awesome as I love it but it was lacking salt and to much lemon. Extra pita bread - came from a dealer but it was very good and chewy like it should of been. Combo Plate - my wife liked the rice but that's about where it ended. The chicken had no flavor, you can see where they were trying to go with it and more seasoning would of been good. The shish kofta actually was really good. The shish tecka was like the chicken with no flavor. The shepherds pie and spinach pie were way over done once again with lemon. Hummus- was so off. It was grainy like it needed to be puréed longer. Lacking salt and garlic and again to much lemon. So everything was lacking flavor unless lemon is the only flavor you care about then you'll love it. It was $63 for everything and maybe worth $20. You could take each item and spruce it up to make it good but then why bother even ordering. Now I get it some days you have things that may miss the mark but every mark? So I can see if your not a good connoisseur like the wife and I are or just never had real good Mediterranean food then I can see the higher ratings given. Some of you really need to open your pallets up and try other places to compare and you'll know exactly what I'm talking about. Today was my first time enjoying Zaytoon. I called ahead because of the pandemic and picked up about a half hour later. My mom and I both got meat plates. I got beef and lamb shawarma and she got the chicken shawarma. First of all, I tasted the chicken and I wouldn't definitely get that next time. It was super flavorful and cooked to perfection. Soooo tender! My meat was good too but it wasn't as seasoned as well as the chicken. I enjoyed the eggplant salad on the side (who knew it was made with ketchup!) and the pita bread was bigger than my head! You can tell the hummus is homemade but mainly It's the rice I have a problem with. I wouldn't say I'm a rice snob...okay...maybe I am. I'm not very good with textures either so the pine nuts in the rice just didn't do it for me. The (what I think to be) golden raisins were a bit too weird for me but I appreciated the peas and carrots mixed in. There had to have been some kind of cinnamon seasoning in the rice as well, it was sweet and savory. I had to mull that over for a while. Verdict: yeah the rice is okay! But as a side note: one plate could easily feed two people. It was nice to have tried both the lamb/beef and chicken but I would definitely just stick to getting the chicken plate and splitting it with my halal food experimenter and partner-in-crime. read more
