I recommend Dr. Zen and his team for anyone with chronic pain. I am a retired veteran and have been living with chronic pain for many years. I've been prescribed probably every medication available for my conditions with little to no relief. I've been through physical therapy and other chiropractors, but still, no relief like I experienced after just 1 visit to Zen Health Center. Excellent service, starting from the phone call to schedule my initial visit, all the way until I walked out of the center. I stepped into a very welcoming, calm, and relaxing environment, then was greeted by a pleasant lady with a warm smile who explained exactly where to sign and what it was for, and I didn't have to wait long to be seen. Dr. Zen walked out to introduce himself and took me back to begin the visit. He sat me down and talked me through every step. He examined me and explained everything he was doing in a way I could understand. Dr. Zen does everything hands-on to show what causes what pain or limited movement. He had me do movements and showed my limitations before the adjustment and showed me the improved changes after the adjustment. He sent me home with some stretches and exercises to do, but demonstrated them on me and had me do them properly with him first. My previous chiropractor just gave me a handout with exercises/stretches to do but didn't give me a walk through to ensure it would be properly executed on my own. After my adjustment, I had a full body massage. I let her know it was my 1st experience getting a massage, so she walked me through each step and made sure not to be too rough for my 1st visit. It was one of the most relaxing and rejuvenating experiences I've had. She isn't too chatty and is very professional. I walked out of the center feeling like a brand new person. I originally met Zen through a running/triathlon group almost 10 years ago. He has such a big heart and always tries to help improve everyone's flexibility and mobility while training. He is super knowledgeable and a great athlete, so when it comes to fixing bodies - he is AWESOME! I even introduced my husband to getting adjusted and he LOVES it! My husband travels a lot, so his back and neck get sore from sitting on airplanes and lugging his luggage around, so after every trip, he goes to Zen.  If you ever have body pains, seeing Zen is totally worth it! I just couldn't do it. The front guy was rude and as much as I think Dr. Zen is awesome, horrible customer service has never been my cup of tea. My first visit with Dr. Zen went well, and it was probably because his front desk guy wasn't there. He explained everything well. I left feeling taller and ache free. I fell in love their online booking platform that makes it easy and convenient. Then my next two visits was subpar and I couldn't get over the front desk guy. So the second visit I get there and the front desk guy can't be bothered. He doesn't acknowledge me and I awkwardly stand there while he talks to another guy. Then, when it's convenient for him, he tells me that he'll be right with me. I look at my watch, and I was literally standing there 5 minutes for an acknowledgement and about 12 minutes before he would even talk to me. It was super busy and so they moved me from table to table. There is no privacy and I could hear the guy next to me talk about his bowl movement problems- TMI! I felt better when I left, so I was like... let's give it one more try- the front guy can't always be rude, right? WRONG. On my third visit I got there early. Since I was early he wouldn't let me in. Whatever, I don't care. But, I did have to pee so I asked if there was anywhere in the area with the bathroom I could use. He ignored my question and closed the door on me. I was like, "Are you kidding me? How hard is it to answer?" It would have taken like, two seconds... maybe two minutes. So I just left. I was like, if I need to pay to take my car out of parking and then find a bathroom, I might as well head to work. I wanted it to work, but it didn't. Dr.Zen is awesome, but for me quality starts from me walking into the door. read more

I tried 2 other chiropractors. Both made me feel sick after 1st visit. So, I was scared to even go anywhere but my teacher at posture class recommended Dr Zen. After 1st visit at Dr Zen, I felt my back was more straight, my neck pain was gone and I felt refreshed. Beware of snake oil. Dr. Zen did some weird pushing down on my feet and arms like he was selling me one of those ion bracelets. Not buying it. I could be wrong but for me its a no. Adjustment was okay-ish. Office was nice albeit slightly cluttered due to some remodeling. read more

After the Great Aloha Run, I was limping on my left side of my back and I knew I had injured it pretty bad. Did an MRI and found out I have a protruding disc between L4 and L5. I saw Dr. Zen for chiropractic adjustments soon after. He was able to figure out problems in my spine just by touching the affected areas. He starts off treatment with electrical stimulation and hot pack. You also get to lay down on a massage table that flexes your back automatically. The adjustments he gives are aggressive but very effective. After that, I was told to do some stretches at home which I did but I still can't complete the amount that he recommends. His website is very useful and shows the types of insurance he accepts. You can also schedule an appointment online. Unfortunately, my back issue wasn't resolved. Dr.Zen informed me that protruding disc can't be fixed by adjustments alone but at least it helped me get most of my mobility back. read more

Okay first of all, I just want to say that I love massages. I have been going to see Emilio at the Waipahu location on and off for the past three years or so and I always have a good time...that is if I can actually get scheduled to have one. The last time I was scheduled to have an appointment was April 1 of this year. Being the good patient that I am, I arrived about 10 minutes early. The start of my appointment time came and went and it was about half an hour that went by before I started getting really antsy. Then another patient walked through the door. At this point, I started to think that poor Emilio was having an April Fool's prank pulled on him. Turns out there was some sort of scheduling error and he ended up being over/double booked. The man can only do so much! He finished up his time with his client, then it was my turn. I don't know if the patient that came in while I was waiting ever did come back. Granted this snafu was earlier this year, so I don't know if the scheduling system has been worked out since then or what, but if it hasn't you all need to fix it. Otherwise you'll be losing patients. Or at least hire someone else to help out cause it seems like Emilio is the only therapist working there. I have to be honest though, I don't schedule my appointments through the Center itself. I normally schedule appointments via Emilio. The last time I wanted to see him I was going through a rough time and was looking forward to releasing all the stress. I had confirmed with him personally several times when the appointment was going to be and was waiting for the official Zen Center confirmation email. I never got the email and so when the day of the appointment came I naturally got a little worried. I contacted him again and he said he thought it was on a different day and that someone had already gotten the time that I had requested. Now I'm normally not that petty, but after this I don't want to see him again. Which is unfortunate because he really does know what he's doing and I don't think I will ever have a therapist as consistent and good as he is. tl;dr- Get a better scheduling system or hire more therapists to help out with Emilio; Don't contact Emilio directly to set up an appointment, he'll only book someone else. read more

I'd been searching for a good Chiropractor on Oahu for years now. After doing an extensive search on Yelp, I decided to try out Dr. Zen at the Zen Heath Center. After my first visit, I can definitely say I walked out feeling 100% better than I did when I walked in! The office is conveniently located on Beretania St. and Bishop St., within walking distance if you're like me and work downtown. The staff was friendly and prompt, while the ambiance and decor made me feel at ease. The initial consultation and adjustment went extremely well. Dr. Zen took time to ask me about my symptoms to find out what was going on. He could immediately tell where I was out of alignment just by pushing on certain points on my back and neck. After some talking we discussed what he would do during the visit and made me feel very comfortable during the whole thing. Once we were finished, he gave me some homework to do before my next visit--some stretches and exercises. Tech Savvy: One thing I do really love is the online appointment booking!! Makes everything super convenient for a busy-bee like me. I've already booked my next appointment! Dr. Zen's website is also very informative and handily outlines which Insurance providers he accepts. Parking: I believe they validate for parking in Kukui Plaza (not the building they are located in), so best to call beforehand to get directions if you don't know where it is. read more

I have been seeing Dr. Zen for years now, much delayed in finally giving him a review. I have used many chiropractors throughout the years, as my spinal issues started to surface in my mid twenties (now 46). Dr. Zen I can say without a doubt is the best! Not only is he very professional and courteous, but when asked specific questions about treatment, health, or fitness, I found out he has a vast amount of knowledge! He also fits the part, being very physically active and in great shape. I started seeing him when I used to work downtown, as his office was close to mine. I still choose to go there, even I now work from home in Kaneohe and my field work is all on the Windward side. After going back to a desk job when I had previously worked on the family farm, sure enough my stiff neck that had somehow gone away while working outdoors came back! Dr. Zen has been able to stabilize and reliably reduce my discomfort and stiffness. He's also very good about advising patients on things they should do on their own in order to minimize spinal problems, from how to set up your desk, chairs to use, etc. I give Zen Health Center my highest recommendation! read more

Dr. Zen has an intuitive and personal style of chiropractics that I like, compared to some of the other chiropractors I've been treated by. Soon after starting with Dr. Zen, I had my wife and 3 year old come in. It was really interesting to hear Dr. Zen's analysis. Although I'm sure it's rare for him, he suggested not to treat my wife's back because her body's self correcting of scoliosis. Hesitant about utilizing chiropractic services, I was unsure about what to expect. My physician told me to be careful and ensure that my neck is neither touched nor is involved in any manual adjustment. So today I headed to Zen Health Center and had high expectations. My needs were met! I learned I had a minor case of scoliosis and went through numerous physical tests to determine my nerve and body sensory abilities prior to adjustment. Dr. Zen was very careful and when I told him about my concerns regarding my neck, he suggested alternative routes including an electric stimulation machine with a hot pad. I had numerous questions for him in addition to my concerns and he was extremely helpful. He provided me with a couple exercises to do before seeing him the following week. He is very knowledgeable and knows what he is talking about. I couldn't have asked for a better experience. Another thing to look out for is chiropractors who ask you to come on a weekly basis. The best chiropractors are those that work and can offer you a reasonable timeline to fix your back. Dr. Zen did both for me and I am sure my experience will continue to be a success!! read more

After four months of intense back pain, and very unsuccessful physical therapy (and a primary care doctor that wanted to give me anti-seizure medication) I found Dr. Zen. After only four sessions I'm finally sleeping through the night and can do normal activity again; like grocery shopping and vacuuming the house. He evaluated my whole spine and found I had eight areas that needed therapy. Plus he gave me core strengthening exercises that I do consistently day and night. Before my visit to Dr. Zen, I had never walked into a chiropractor's office ever; but soon after I injured my left Achilles' tendon after a half marathon race, I tagged along with my girlfriend for my first chiropractic experience. At my first visit, Dr. Zen analyzed my flexibility, showed which side compensates for my functional side (my right foot is shorter than my left by a smidge; I'm a freak! Nooooo!!!), and used massage, hot, cold, and electrical therapies on my leg and body. Much to my surprise, after one session, the swelling from my Achilles' had gone down over 75% within 24 hours of my visit! It was obvious to me that my Achilles' tendon was well on its way to recovery. What makes Dr. Zen even more awesome is he takes time to suggest stretches and core exercises that would strengthen your weaker side/points/core, and also prevent injury from reoccurring. Since I began to see Dr. Zen for my Achilles' and adjustments, and also adhering to his recommended exercises and injury prevention protocol, I have been injury free (sans bicycle road rash... grrrr).
