Second time visited here, first time i really enjoyed this place. Unfortunately I don't think I will be visiting again anytime soon. Service was good as before , the boss lady and waitress were both very nice . But the place seriously needs a little more update. Hall way to bathroom was extremely dark, wished they can turn on some light so I could see my way. One of the dish were served on a cracked plate , so we asked for a new plate. The metal steamer for xlb was very dirty with lots of grease all around, wished they could have cleaned it better or maybe it's time to replace new ones. We ordered several dishes, I liked meat mooncake the most , mostly I think the crust skin was quite good , but the xlb meat was so greasy, after one I couldn't really eat a second. This has been a family favorite for when my son is in town but this time sadly, it didn't hit the marks. Maybe an off day so we'll try again. We loved the pan fried dumplings cuz they used to be so juicy when you bit into them the juice would just squirt out and splash the person sitting across from you but this time the meat was tiny and not juicy at all! This restaurant confuses me. It seems to be rather popular, and had a regular flow of customers while I was there. However, the food just wasn't to my liking. At all. The pork in the spicy wontons seemed mushy, flavorless, and undercooked. The sauce was thin and lacked any heat. The beef in the beef noodle soup was dry and the noodles were too doughy-tasting. The pan-fried pork buns looked great but the bun kind of fell apart in my mouth and lacked structure or flavor. The salty soybean milk was thin and disappointing. May is the month for highlighting Asian American and Pacific Islander owned businesses, and I would be remiss if I didn't talk about some of the delicious foods I had while out in the bay area. To say that your can turn any corner in the area and probably find some excellent Asian inspired restaurants or foods would not be an exaggeration, and this little place "Zen Noodle Bar" is a wonderful example of that. This was my last meal before headed to the airport to come home, and I just had to have some more buns before going back east to an area where this kind of cooking is just not as common. I found this place convenient to where I dropped off my rental care, and just walked over, wheeling my suitcase behind me. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's in a small shopping center with it's own parking, and a convenient drive thru in the front for those picking up to go from any spot.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] After looking at some Yelp photos, I decided to go with the A1 Pan Fried Pork buns, as well as the E9 Spicy mince meat over rice with pork cutlet. This was entirely too much food for one person, but with a red-eye flight ahead to the east coast, it was time to stock up for a long journey anyway. The spicy minced meat came out first, and wow, lots of flavor! I could have gone even spicier with it, but loved the plate I was given. The pork cutlet it came with was lightly panko fried, very tender, delicious. The Pan Fried Pork buns were big, delicious, and wow... I would eat these all the time if I lived here. They were wonderful. VERY hot on the inside, as each bun wraps up a portion of pork and soup broth. If you like, you can bite out a small hole and sit them on their side to let them vent and cool a bit. I could not finish all this food, but made more than a healthy dent. I wish I could have brought it home for leftovers, sadly not possible in my situation. The value was definitely there, especially given what I had gotten used to paying for things in the bay area. Divvy Shanghainese place tucked away a couple streets from downtown San Mateo. Stopped by for Sunday night dinner, and place was pretty quiet. They kept the door open as well, so it was it slightly chilly. Overall food was flavorful, good portion size, with some surprises.. Im a big fan of wonton soup, and both the wonton soup and mini wonton soup were pretty solid. Both use the same soup broth, with difference being the size of wonton, filling inside, and then how much skin is left. The fried string beans were surprisingly good. They were on the thinner side, perfectly cooked, with a slight dry crispiness on the outside -- probably best had dine in and not take out. The pork chop and ribs were very saucy and meat was pretty tender. One notable disappointment was the shen jian bao, which had a much thicker and fluffier skin than I expected. It tasted more like a fried baozi (steamed bun) than a fried dumpling. I was hoping for something with thinner skin and more soup. The filling inside was solid though, and overall it had good flavor. Def divvy place, not a date night. Staff is friendly and nice, and can speak Shanghainese. Parking available in the center so pretty easy to get in and out. I've really come to enjoy it, especially the vegetarian spicy sesame noodles, they're flavorful, have a nice kick, and make for a satisfying meal on their own. Meeting some friends from Hayward, I got here when they opened and we were their first customers, taking a wall table on the right. My friends are loyal and frequent customers here so I entrusted them to craft our meal. You are given a laminated menu sheet and an erasable marking pen to pick your items. The kind hostess and waitress took our order after giving us cups of cold water as requested. We ordered eleven items, including one add-on from me. Here are the highlights: 1. And the boiled dumplings came in a plastic (6) container. Plastic (6) is polystyrene and not safe to come in contact with food at boiling temperature. For hot food, only plastic (5) is safe. Plastic (6) is cheap and can be used for room temperature food like salad, etc, but not hot food. I ended up through away everything from this store. I would never order from them again. Haven't been to this place for a while. I think our last visit is pre-Covid!! Craving for the pan fried buns this evening. Looked up on Yelp and glad to see they are still around. Got there around 7:30pm on a Wed night. We saw another dine-in couple and a family of four just left the Resturant. Many walk-In to place their to-go orders. They seems to be quite busy. We ordered beef wraps, wontons soup and pan fried buns, of course. We had to wait for a while as they are busy making to-go orders. I will pass on the beef wraps as it's lukewarm. The wrap seems to be deep fried as it's quite brown, but it is room temperature to the touch which is odd. The beef is unusually saucy. I do agree it's very flavorful. But I am sorry to say lukewarm food is a major no no for me. Wonton soup is surprisingly delicious! It's simple basic wonton soup. Nothing fancy. However, we both enjoy it very much. I will absolutely order this again! Pan fried buns are as good as I remember. Buns are fluffy and it's bottom is crunchy. Meat fillings is flavorful and juicy. Will order this again for sure. Mediocre food, made even moreso by the hair we found in our beef wrap. Came with a friend on a Saturday for lunch. The place is on the smaller side but there were plenty of seats available. We ordered the beef wrap, pan fried pork dumplings, and jiajiangmian. The beef wrap was disappointing, not only because we found hair in it, but also because the beef was almost like pulled pork style meat rather than thinly sliced pieces of meat. The beef was mixed with little chunks of cucumbers as well, instead of thinly sliced cucumbers delicately rolled in the onion pancake, so the whole thing just seemed off. The flavor was also lacking. The pan fried pork dumplings were the best thing we ate, but they were very average, especially compared to other places in the Bay. They were nice and crispy on the bottom and not too oily, though, which was appreciated. Something about the flavor was missing, but I can't quite place my finger on it. The jiajiangmian was disappointing. The noodles were overcooked and too soft and the amount of meat/sauce, cucumbers, and radish was disproportionate to the amount of noodles, leaving the noodles barely coated and lacking in taste. The flavor was also nothing to write home about. The staff seemed really busy and it took a while to get plates and utensils, but they seemed friendly.
