Hands down the best Cheung Hing around. Dining here is good because the location is a fair size, clean and bright. Service is always consistent and the servers are friendly. Recently I stopped to pick-up dinner with the plan to have leftovers. I called my order in and was quoted 40 minutes for my order to be ready. My order consisted of salted fish and chicken fried rice (this location has the best around SF and the peninsula), bitter melon beef, chicken chow mein, Thai style fried vermicelli (my favorite dish here), salt and pepper chicken wings. We also received a complimentary bbq pork fried rice. Everything was fantastic and we had plenty of leftovers for a few days. read more

Big won ton filled w pork and shrimp. Bok choy Broth not much flavor, in a separate container since this was a take-home order. Curry Beef Stew I've never had Curry beef stew before, prefer chicken, curry, but for some odd reason, I decided to order this dish. It was underwhelming and I won't order it again. The Curry sauce itself was OK but the big long pieces of beef were somewhat gross, lots of fat. They added plenty of slices to onions and a few pieces of green pepper and Julienned carrots, but that's about it for being called a stew. Technically located in San Mateo but really so in Bel-Mateo(between Belmont and San Mateo). Cheung Hing is an old school Chinese restaurant where the fresh Duck is hanging right there for you to pick up. The interior is dated but the food is authentic and not too oily. I usually pick up the aforementioned Duck and some pan fried noodles, maybe some rice porridge on colder days. Service is solid and they're a good option in the local area. read more

Service was atrocious. We stopped by to get a roasted duck and saw a plate of zongzi by the cash register. We picked one up, planning to buy it. My focus was their variety of BBQ and roasted meats. I ordered to-go Egg Flower Soup, Mushroom Chicken, BBQ Pork and Combination Fried Rice. The BBQ Pork is really good and true to Chinese cuisine. It's hard to find an entree of BBQ Pork in the area. Portions are generous! Mushroom Chicken and Combination Fried Rice is really good, too. Mushroom Chicken is great over the rice. I didn't care for their version Egg Flower Soup, with bits of zucchini. I miss Egg Drop Soup accompanied by crunchy little, noodles to sprinkle on top. It's super hard to find. It took me a while to finally check this place out, it's in the old Uncle Chen's location. Quality was ok, service slow but we went late on a Tuesday night so can't really complain. For the price and quality, it's a solid choice if you are craving some comforting Chinese food. We had some chicken fried rice (tons of chicken!), beef chow fun, and egg rolls. Came here yesterday for lunch with a cousin and my Aunt. We were on a mission to try several (8!) dishes, plus steamed rice in preparation for my Aunt's upcoming birthday lunch which will be here in December (currently November)... Pros- many of the dishes were quite tasty. My favorites were the braised tofu with bok choy, and a 50/50 platter of their bbq pork and crispy pork dishes. The meats were super tender and juicy, almost melted in my mouth. The bok choy was light, a nice contrast to the other dishes which combined became quite heavy. My Aunt's favorite was also the braised tofu with bok choy, followed by their sweet and sour chicken, then their honey walnut prawns. The restaurant is not fancy, but it was packed (every table was in use!) with really nice patrons. The tables around us were extremely friendly, one table brought us take out containers when they went to get their own (so nice, right!)! And other folks came by to wish my Aunt a happy birthday... it was a restaurant, but almost felt like we were at someone's home. Cons- the staff didn't seem to communicate with one another... while we were a table of 3 guests, we ordered a ton of food and asked the initial waitress for a larger table. She combine our small four top table with a two top, all the other waitresses tried to take it away seeing only the 3 of us, so we had to explain our situation to 3 of their other waitresses. I would have thought after the first one, they'd all know our situation, but that didn't happen. My cousin (cousin-in-law) goes to this spot a lot with her family. She mentioned their lobster noodles were amazing, so we ordered the $9.99 special since we had well over the $88.88 order requirement. Perhaps I didn't mix it enough or it was a bad day, but that was my least favorite dish... and I generally love lobster and noodles! Otherwise, we all enjoyed our lunch! Came here for dinner a few nights ago and was floored by the large dishes of food for a considerably affordable price. The only thing I didn't like was the pea sprouts were a bit on the tougher end. Oysters were huge, lobster noodles were good, salt and pepper shrimps were fresh and huge (they really should devein them though), pork jowl with green beans were delicious. I can't even remember everything we ate, but everything was decent and not overly salty. Came back the next day and got a whole roast duck for $32.95. Such a great price and the duck was flavorful. I come back here so many times just for their clay pot rice. There are many options to choose from Chinese sausage, pork, beef, chicken, or fish in a mini clay pot. I always get the preserved sausage and pork rice in clay. I can smell the delicious aroma as the staff mixed the crispy rice with the soy sauce. The sizzling Chinese sausage definitely adds another layer of sweetness to the pot. The best part of this is savoring the charred rice on the bottom of the pot. I came here on a lark and I'm glad I did. For some reason, all of a sudden upon reading the menu, I had a hankering for their Roast Duck. Maybe the aroma or whatever, it's what I ordered. When my order came, it was visually delightful and spot on if it's curb appeal you're looking for. The lunch special was generous and I enjoyed every bite of the meal. We have been here a lot for dim sum since there aren't that many dim sum places on the Peninsula. I think this place has decent dim sum and my husband likes it as well. The beef noodle roll is pretty good. I do dislike that they put water chestnut pieces in here because it adds this horrible crunch I don't like but I just try to take the out before I eat it. I ask them for extra sauce because I think the default level doesn't give you enough! The steamed spareribs are yummy. I like the sauce they use and the pieces of meat they give were easy to eat. Some places give you horrible cuts of meat that are very difficult to remove the bone from but I thought these were good. The salted egg dessert bun was nice. Portion was big Gai lan (Chinese broccoli) cooked with garlic- Flavor was fine but they did not trim or cut some of the stems as some pieces were too chewy/stringy. Portion size was big Sampan porridge- came with pork (instead of pig stomach- which is fine for me), shrimp, squid, fish, peanuts, and ginger. Portion size was average Stir fried chow mein with soy sauce- big portion with plenty of sprouts and yellow chives. Fish clay pot- Portion size was average but it was too salty and sweet for my taste. This came with tofu, fish, shiitake mushroom, and garlic. Chinese donut I tried to order a hot milk tea but they only had cold ones. I opted for an iced lemon tea, but it was too sweet. I added water to it and it was still too sweet. The food is average to good here but service is lacking. I've been here a couple of times for take out and they are super, super slow. It took an hour just for takeout. This happened several times so it wasn't just a one off. It also happened to my sister. They need to hire more help if they can't offer better service. Their Belmont location is much better. Service is great. The restaurant can get packed so you might have to wait for a bit. For the peking duck, be sure to reserve them early during the day because they run out of it quick. Same thing with some of their BBQ dishes. All the food that we tried from here were pretty good. The Chinese sausage clay pot was delicious and the honey walnut prawns too. I grew up in the Bay Area but went out of state about 10 years ago. When I was a kid, my mom brought me to the original Cheung Hing in SF and it was one of my favorite restaurants to go to. Then to my surprise after getting older, they opened one in Millbrae. Although it wasn't as good as the SF one, it was still not bad. A decade after leaving, it was to my surprise that a Cheung Hung is right here in San Mateo. Some serious nostalgia hit and I had to go for lunch even on Thanksgiving Day. It wasn't that busy there with in dining customers but since it was Thanksgiving it looked like there were tons of to go orders and prepped turkeys to go. As other reviews say, customer service isn't their trait and to be fair, in my whole life I never went to Cheung Hing for their customer service. I mean kinda expected that everyone would be complaining from the customers to the servers to the chefs... and they were lol. But what really disappointed me was the food. I ordered a curry beef stew over rice and some char siu (bbq pork). They didn't have any other bbq meats cause they sold out. The beef stew was cooked but with the type of meat they use it's supposed to be stewed for a long time. Unfortunately that wasn't the case here and it made the chewy stuff practically inedible. The char siu was okay. It was a pretty big portion for one order and they do cut it pretty think. I just found the meat to have too much fat on it and the char on it was barely existent. Overall I'm just gonna give it a 3 star review because I do appreciate the fact that they were open on Thanksgiving. I've tried Cheung Hing at other locations and their BBQ is alright, until I tried the San Mateo location. TLDR: lackluster food and dishonest billing practices, check your credit card charges! There was no wait on a weekend, so I should've taken it as a sign. We dined in and ordered a BBQ combination platter with roast pork and roast duck. You can already tell from the pictures but the roast duck portion was basically inedible, since it was all skin and bone. They gave us neck and head, and other random parts with no meat. There was a layer of lettuce at the bottom to prop up the meat, which was drowning in oil. The roast pork was also extremely oily, so the skin was not crispy. The worst part is that when we checked our credit card bill a few days later, we realized they had altered the tip amount on the receipt and charged extra to the card. The spicy eggplant with fish in clay pot also tasted good with a decent portion. The only thing is the lamb stew & dried bean curd sheet in clay pot is a bit needing longer cooking.
