Ordered a sushi roll to pick up on my lunch break, drove 20 minutes to indulge in an establishment I heard good things about only to receive my order wrong. I called to inform them of the matter and the supervisor told me she could NOT believe me and that I will not receive a refund. Two things were very disappointing about my recent visit. 1. When asking about the omikase, I was told that the chef would not consider the fact that we do not eat shellfish. In fact, I was told that the chef gets "angry" when asked to do this. I've never been to a sushi restaurant, in the US or elsewhere, that would not make an allowance for someone who did not each shellfish. 2. For our party, the gratuity was added in automatically (18%). I was not told this in advance, nor was I told when the bill was brought to the table. I noticed it incidentally on the itemized receipt. Further, when the bill came for me to sign, there was no mention of the gratuity on the bill (only on the itemized receipt). This is pretty shady. Most of the time, the restaurant tells you about an included gratuity when you book the table and when they bring the bill. Also, when you go to sign the bill, it also states that the gratuity is included and gives you the chance to add more. In this case, it just said total price and had a line for gratuity - but the "total price" already included the 18%. Not good. It's a shame, because overall, the food is decent and the waiter was good. But these two shady practices will probably prevent me from returning. read more

The food is great. We've been twice and ordered a variety of items and everything has been yummy. I especially like the fried calamari appetizer and short ribs entree. The decor is upscale and appropriate. My only complaint is the music is too loud and too techno! I wish they would play 'Zen' music to compliment my eating experience. I'm sure a lot of people think you can't get quality sushi in Beloit, WI, but those people are wrong! The food at Zen Sushi & Grill is AWESOME! Our favorite appetizers are the avocado roll and tuna tower... so yummy! Also there's a dish with fried rice served in a pineapple that is the coolest thing! To top off the amazing food are handcrafted cocktails that are well made every time we go. We've had the same server, Ana, on multiple visits and she answers any questions we have about the menu. We are able to switch out one ingredient for another, such as spicy tuna for regular tuna without issue. We live in IL, but make the drive to visit Zen Sushi and Grill because it is simply that good. read more

I have made a call in order three times and each of those times have been a terrible experience. They told me that my food would be read at 12 and I waited 50 minutes past that time. 50 minutes!!!!!! We ordered our food online,we never received a call (which we were told normally happens when you order online,)that it was ready for pick up,so an hour or so later our sushi was by the hostess station. Just sitting out on a 90+ degree day. The price went up from the original price online once we got there and our order was wrong. Two people from our group ended up feeling discomfort after eating the sushi. One even threw up. And we had a 14 hr drive back to Maryland that night. So needless to say I will not be coming back to Zen. read more

Zen has very good food. They have trouble with their delivery service. In the last two weeks I have had two large to go orders. On the first one they did not include the soup and salad that were part of the sashimi dinner. On the second I specifically asked for nine place settings. The chopsticks and condiments were included, but only one cup for soy sauce. The attention to service detail is very poor at zen. We have probably had 15 carry outs from them and they fail on at least 25% of orders. read more

I felt the need to update the review based on an experience we had recently. We received a gift card for Zen so we decided to try it out for a Friday dinner. I called a day ahead to reserve a table. After 3 rings the owner answers the phone. I knew it was him, having met him before. He says "Zen Sushi." and I say I'd like to make a reservation. He says "Hold on" and then YELLS across the restaurant for some girl to get over there. I heard EVERYTHING. "Why are you over there talking to him? Why didn't you answer the phone.....??" He then proceeds to continue to berate this poor girl AS I'M SITTING ON THE PHONE listening. He then gives the phone to the girl without telling her who is on the phone, what I needed, or without telling me who he was giving me to or thank you for calling. It was nuts. The girl sounds rightfully confused as she answers and a bit flustered, knowing full well I had just heard her get screamed at by her boss. It was, quite possibly, one of the most unprofessional experiences I've ever had with a business. read more

It took her another 20min to bring it out. When the sushi came out I ask her for some wasabi. She never bring it out. Excellent waiter steered Us in the right directions. All the food was excellent except for they poke tuna which is not what I remember in Hawaii but ok . . Oysters were phenomenal as was the yellowtail with jalapeno. Beautiful presentations we will be back. The decor when you walk in is nice. Nothing too special but nice. My fiancé and I ordered a bottle of wine and an appetizer the shrimp shumai dumplings. Besides the fact that there were 3 which is an odd number which just sucks, the appetizer was okay. It was bland and the texture was just odd. My fiancé got a spicy tuna roll and the spicy ramen special. The roll was pretty good. But the ramen was way underwhelming. The flavor was okay just mainly spicy. The real issue is that the noodles were not homemade. We have had homemade ramen before and that wasn't it. It looked and tasted like an instant ramen. It just wasn't impressive at all. I ordered a spider roll and garlic scallops appetizer. I didn't know that the protein in the roll was shrimp tempura. I just know that I wanted a roll that had cucumber and avocado in it. It was okay just again bland. The scallops were not great at all. It seemed too large to be an appetizer. Everything was covered in oil to the point of pooling in the bottom of the dish and again just bland. It was supposed to be garlic chili oil and I tasted no garlic or heat which are both strong flavors. Lastly we ordered a chocolate soufflé and it was not that great. The green tea ice cream had no flavor and I would have never thought that green tea and chocolate would go well together. The chocolate soufflé tasted and looked like a mug cake made in the microwave. For a meal costing almost 100 dollars, it was underwhelming and bland. I would rather have made something at home because honestly I know at least that I could have made a better chocolate soufflé and scallop appetizer. Would not recommend read more

The atmosphere was nice, but the food was mediocre. We were a group of 4 women coming from all parts of the country for a college class reunion. Zen's was highly recommended. Even our Chinese classmate was disappointed and felt some menu items were misrepresented. My former roommate sitting next to me has many dietary restrictions due to medical conditions, so simply ordered a vegetable stir-fry dish. Unfortunately, she was served plain white rice with a few frozen peas and carrots dropped in. Even after explaining my dietary conditions to the waitress taking our order, and going with her recommendation. There was only 1 item on the plate (of 5 items) which I could eat. Overall, we were disappointed. Since I have now retired and moved back to this City, I will not return to dine here again. read more

We drove up from Rockford to try out this new restaurant on Saturday during the Oktoberfest. We had some initial service issues, but I'm sure they are just trying to iron out the kinks. Sat on the patio to listen to the music and had a very wonderful dinner. The food was much better than what I've had locally and will be making return visits back up to Beloit just to eat at Zen Sushi. The vegetable tempura was very light, flavorful, and not oily at all. Finally tried Zen last night and we are so excited to have this in Beloit. Overall, this is the best and most creative sushi in the area (Rockford/Beloit). We loved the crunchy tuna appetizer so much that my husband had to order a second. And ZOMG, try the Oh My God roll - it's one of two rolls that come to the table flaming. It was ridiculously good. Unless you really need sushi I'd wait to get to a real city. Came to town to visit our daughter and wanted to go out for something nice. The first clue was when I mentioned I wanted to get a bunch of sushi the waitress point us to the combo plates.....watch out. I said I'd prefer to order a la carte to get what we like. They had a section with Nigiri and Sashimi listed along with a column for 2 pcs and 3 pcs pricing. When the waitress arrived I said I wanted all nigiri and three piece - we had 5 people so that way if I ordered two of everything we would have enough for everyone to try all. I also then ordered a few rolls to round out the order. When the order came we were presented with a plate of sashimi and the rolls - i looked puzzled and said I didn't order sashimi and she said all the three piece prices were for sashimi. She said she knew I said nigiri, but the three piece was sashimi and asked if we would like a bowl of rice. The rolls were fair at best - not presented all that nice and smothered in sauce....oh well we tried, but don't need to try again. read more

Im was very excited to have a upscale Sushi place open in Beloit. Unfortunately as soon as we walked in the door...it smelled like fish. So we sat outside and ordered the Miso to start..disappointed...not enough flavor and too many raw green onions. The Volcano and Tsunami rolls didn't disappoint, they were delicious. Looks like they have a few kinks to work out with staffing, our server was not very helpful and didn't come to check on us outside, I had to ask another server to bring our check. My family was visiting from Florida and hungry for sushi. I've heard great views about the tasty sushi at Zen's so decided to give it a try. We were very excited to try Zen as any new restaurant is welcome so close to home. We were very disappointed. The sushi was not bad, but it wasn't anything special. The rolls were small for the price. It would be okay to take care of a quick sushi craving if you don't feel like driving far. Our entrees, however, were awful. My husband ordered the chicken fried rice and it was very bland. I ordered the New York strip. At least a third of the steak was fat. The steak was supposed to come with grilled asparagus and instead they gave me stir fry veggies. Lastly, the steak was supposed to have a teriyaki glaze. I don't know what their definition of teriyaki is but there was absolutely no flavor. None. The steak was dry and tough. We will not be returning anytime soon. read more

First couple of times everything was great. Last time (about three weeks ago or so) our waitress quit in the middle of service and asked if would settle the bill before she left. My friend and I eat slow and order as we go and weren't done but we went ahead and paid. We were right by the hostess station and they were aware of what happened. No one checked on us or apologized for what had happened so I finally asked if they send someone over. Dirty dishes were not removed as we progressed through the night and overall it was not a good experience. When we left I took one of the paper menus and today tried calling in an order to take out - no one answers and eventually you get very generic VM greeting telling you to leave your name and number. I then noticed online ordering and found the website is full of non-responsive or broken links and there is no way order. As excited as I was when the restaurant opened I think they are already on their way out. read more
