This is the first place I've been to in Mexico where the staff wasn't that friendly... Probably because they're so Americanized like the rest of this place that they've picked up our lack of hospitality as well. The batido I got was, as I should've expected, American, not Latin American like I wanted. I love when they just blend fresh fruit with milk and you have a thin and delicious batido not some heavy shake make with ice cream... Whatever, I digress. The music here sucks too.... At this point I decided not to go past the guac and chips because this place screams tourist trap and I'm sure the food must suck. read more

One is the coolest bars in Playa del Carmen! I had dreamt of the string lights on the beach and this literally came from my dream! I love the music and the atmosphere here. The drinks were pricey but comparable to many of the other places, and definitely inexpensive compared to the states. The sitting area was great! You can sit at a high top or one of the lower tables. If you're looking for a nice place for food and drinks, but really great beachside atmosphere, then this is your next stop. We got the ceviche and nachos w/chicken, and it was plenty for two people. The ceviche was very tasty and fresh, the nachos were tasty but cold by the time they got to us. However, a random review can't do the experience of eating 15 feet away from the ocean justice. They had live music and dancing, so if ambiance is what your leaving towards, you won't be disappointed! read more

I've always recommended this place in Playa. For years I have been treated well and have had a good time. In fact, when I was here the other night, I'd read some negative reviews and refused to believe them. I travel alone most of the time, so it's usually just me coming in. Today I had two bad experiences - after years of all good. I came here for breakfast this morning and was seated right away. I was also the only patron. After 25 minutes, no one had come and greeted me, taken my order, or even acknowledged me. So I left and ate somewhere else. No big deal. And nothing to make me take the time to write a review. Now this evening after dealing with the 5th Avenue chaos, I decided to walk back down to ZENZI for a few drinks. When I told the host that it was just me, he just said, "one? The bar." He and I knew very well there was no room at - or near - the bar. I still walked in. There were, however, open tables away from the bar. I went back to the host and I was dismissed. One of my favorite places has disappointed and will have to earn back my glowing reviews. read more

Once for dinner and again just for drinks and seating in the lounge area near the beach. The dinner was good too ,would recommend sea bass and Salmon.. Zenzi appears to be a victim of its own success and location. Didn't live up to yelp reviews. Great location right on the beach. Always packed. Tables are very close together with no real ambiance other than the beautiful ocean views--mostly Dos Equis donated umbrellas are the decor. Do not waste your time ordering the regular margarita. It arrives at lightning speed--most likely premade with no noticeable trace of alcohol. Tastes like sweet and sour mix. Gold margarita actually tasted like a made-to-order margarita. Ceviche presentation was great but the quality of the shrimp sub-par. Order with all fish if you can and you won't be disappointed. My husband got the battered shrimp and they were decent. We come to Playa every two years and will probably buy a place someday. I'd come back for the view, a gold margarita and Heidy's service. In the winter, the beachfront is gobbled up by waves and higher surf, so sometimes sunbathers plop down in front of the entrance. We had to practically step over two ladies. They have a seating section right at the beach, sand under your feet, so fun, there was a dance floor, some day, they even have a dance lesson, they air televised sports, they had a PPV fight going on, one of the nights we were there, at no extra charge!!! Found it off the beaten path one day while shopping in town and returned for lunch the next day after realizing it was a nice two mile walk on the beach from our resort in Riviera Maya. This place is fabulous! It has a great location on the beach and the comfy sofas looking out to the Caribbean sea are just bliss! We ordered the nachos with chicken and the fish, both were delicious. The fish especially was light and very flavorful. The drinks were good too. The highlight of course was being able to enjoy the food watching the sunlight descend over the horizon. Keep your eyes on your valuables! While dining here with my family, I caught a partial glimpse of some pesos against the napkin holder on our table, which turned out to be my son's money clip (he was wearing shorts with no pockets) that he set on the table. I was not aware of this yet and assumed it was a tip left by the previous customers. I didn't think much of it, then, when I saw our waiter quickly lift and pocket the money. We were all engaged in conversation and nobody else seemed to notice, either. Later, though, my son asked what happened to his money clip and it dawned on my what had happened. Our waiter was no where to be seen (a waitress had taken over his role), so we explained what had happened to her and then to the manager. Naturally, they all disavowed responsibility. Our tough luck. Fine, but I will never come within 500 yards from this snake pit again and will warn everyone else to keep your eyes on the help. read more

The menu is good, lots of things to choose from and it is cheap! Lovely chairs right on the beach, great drinks, nice live bands on some days. But, the waitress (on the two days we went she was there and serving us) is something I'm not used to. She waited next to our table until we were ready to order. Once we were, she just stared at us blankly and when we placed our order, she just kept staring so I asked her: are you taking our order? Weird but okay.... The guys that bring out the food are lovely tho. But, the both of us got sick after eating here. The first time we didn't think much of it, the second time we knew it had to be Zenzi. Also, my bf has celiacs disease so he can't have wheat and all that sort of stuff. He orded a grilled salmon and they brought out a grilled salmon with breadcrumbs all over it. When we asked for a NEW plate telling them he is allergic they ensured us he would get a new plate. Unfortunately, as we found out the next day when he got sick, we knew they had just grilled a new salmon but put it on the same plate. Such a shame!!! Oh, and I asked for chicken and they served me beef. The one star goes to the band and the guys that serve the food. Avoid this place if you don't want to spend your vacay being sick. read more
