Tim the designed called me back the next day and scheduled an appointment to come and assess the housse. Our radon level had been testing between 6 and 8. Tom did a thorough assessment inside and out and created a proposal including a sketch of the installation, including the EXACT cost, which was just under $2000 - very reasonable. I was impressed that they use a large diameter downspout (matching our existing downspout color) extending to the roof line instead of PVC pipe. They also install a housing over the outside fan unit which looks great. They also seal the sump pump with a new lid and seal all the cracks around the perimiter of the basement. The technician Jorge came out two weeks later and performed the entire install. He was amazing! He explained everything, and left it all very clean. Very professional and courteous. I called DuPage Radon and the very nice woman who answered the phone made it sound like they might cover it, but when she talked to her boss, he said no. Their quote to replace the unit was $400 (they were originally paid approximately $1,200 five years ago) and the soonest they could do it was New Year's Eve. I was able to find the exact same model radon fan at Home Depot for $150 and it literally took me no more than 15 minutes to remove the old unit (and I've never done this before). I'll install the new one when it arrives in the next few days. I don't know about you, but $500 an hour for labor seems excessive to me. Obviously I'm in the wrong profession. Meanwhile, I'm going to remove the DuPage Radon sticker from the cover just out of spite.

All he did was guess and said a lot of maybe this or maybe that. He even had problems using his volt meter and actually bent his needles and had to replace them. He couldn't get a good reading because he couldn't get the positive needle (red) in the volt meter and he did it twice/three times. Then he proceeded to disengage the pipe inside the furnace to shut the unit down, which then caused another code to appear. After that, he then expressed that maybe the exhaust/fresh air pipes going outside were clogged or that the installation was mis-aligned (after 4 years)! After an hour of guessing and coming up blank, he then said "well it's the blower motor and maybe the power switch or the pipes to the outside." I asked if he had the motor or the switch on the truck and he said it would have to be ordered, would probably get Tuesday and could install Wednesday and I would receive a call. I expressed my concern because of the cold and the frequency of the furnace going on and off and I was told to just turn it off at the main power switch for a minute and it would reset and work fine. I waited 3 wekes for a phone call not two days. I contacted the company Owner, Kevin Budinger and received no response. They ripped me off for $115! I purchased this furnace from this company, so I'm not just a new customer.

Fair enough. When they arrived, they opened the dryer vent cover and one bird flew out. They removed some debris and put on a plastic covering to prevent future entry of birds. After about 10 mins to complete the job, the final charge was an additional whopping $798 ($299 for bird removal and $499 to install two covers). They took off the $90 inspection fee. And after negotiating the final charge was $579. Definitely overpriced compared to competitors. Other quotes from my neighbors were $300 -400.
