We go to Zettlers because it's local. We are frequent customers. I'm working on a project and I needed a can of white spray paint. I sent my husband the twenty minute drive down to zettlers and he purchased a can of DoIt spray paint. The can would not spray no matter what we did to try to find a resolution. So I sent my husband back today to exchange it for another can and the manager (Jordan) refused. He fiddled with it for a few minutes and was able to get it to spray. My husband understanding how important this project was for me to get it finished today, went ahead and purchased another can of paint ($17) because he knew if he came home and I couldn't use the original can of paint I was going to be upset. So when my husband got home and explained the situation I was dumbfounded. I called the store and talked to Jordan who again refused to exchange the can of paint. He basically said there's no way he could resell it so he wasn't taking the loss. He ssmaid he was able to get the can working. I tried to use the can and it took everything i had to make our spray. He also told me that the owner Mike would tell me the same thing and that the owner would also not exchange the can of paint. Now I know from experience working in customer service that the last thing a manager should do when you have an upset customer is to tell the customer that the owner would not do anything different. The last thing a manager should do is to not find a resolution for the customer. A simple exchange was all we wanted. Instead we are out over 2 hours plus the$5 can of paint that basically went in the trash and the additional $17 we spent for a working can of paint. Beyond disappointed. The teenagers that work at this store always treat is with respect, Jordan could take some lessons. read more

Customers, watch prices as they appear at checkout - OR - check your receipt carefully before leaving the store. Yesterday afternoon I purchased $145.+ of merchandise that included two "Yeti" brand, insulated metal cups marked as $21. each. This price was less than I had seen elsewhere. When I arrived home two hours later, I noticed the receipt reflected I had been charged $25. for each cup. I called the store and spoke to (I believe) the same employee that had checked me out. They confirmed the $21. displayed price. Today I drove back to Powell to clear this up before it became dated. The clerk and manager became involved, explaining the displayed price was incorrect. I didn't expect to get a free cup, or anything. Given I called a couple hours after the purchase to confirm the displayed price, drove back to Powell this afternoon to be told, "That shouldn't have happened," no apology, no offer to get one cup at the displayed price of $21, and pay $25 for the other...nothing. It's not that I couldn't afford to pay the additional $8., it was the lack of consideration for the effort, time and distance that irritated me. I returned both items and will get them somewhere else for $25., or more. I've been shopping at Zettler Hardware for four years. Prices are generally higher, but I feel it's worth it because of (usually) better customer service. Zettler, you can do better. read more

Used to love this store and have willing paid more for items because it's a local business. Well that run has come to an end over caulk. Yep, cheap caulk...it should have been simple return for a product since the manufacturer put white caulk in what should have been clear caulk packaging. I was told since I didn't have a receipt they couldn't do anything. Well that's not true, they could have returned my item and just charged it back to the manufacturer since it was there error. Guess I'm just going to buy stuff from Amazon or Big Box stores if service is going to be crappy. read more

I have bought a lot of things from this store in the past 2 months. Included among them were a defective garden hose and a toddler gate/fence still in its original packaging because 2 other identical gates i tried to use were so useless I threw them away. Today, I went to return the garden hose and the unopened gate. They said I needed my receipt. I dont keep my receipts on $20.00 items because I know any reliable merchant will stand by its product. Zettler will not. They screwed me out of $50.00 or so. But, I will never spend another dollar at the store, and i will tell anyone I know to not shop there. Bab business decision, Zettler. No, I was not trying to defraud you out of $50.00. It will cost you much more. read more

I have had to make three separate trips to this location for assistance with Benjamin Moore paint samples. I was attempting to get a regular paint sample and two at lower levels of saturation and was told this was very common by my painter. However; this concept seemed absurd and complex to the two different individuals I have worked with throughout my three visits. The paint itself is actually not my concern, although I certainly was not happy to get home to open my paint cans only to find white paint with no pigment in them at all (the original paint was very dark and even at 50% saturation would not be anywhere close to white). I was compelled to write this review after one gentleman in particular (I did not get his name but he seemed to be a manager) could not have been more condescending and unpleasant to deal with. My interactions with him during my first visit were not pleasant or friendly, it felt like he was speaking to me as if I was this high-maintenance woman who knew nothing and he was incredibly dismissive. His advice was to come back tomorrow to work with a different gentlemen. While I did just that, I had to return a 3rd time due to the aforementioned paint issue. During this visit when I explained to him that the lower saturation paint samples were, in fact, just white paint with no pigment he asked if I stirred the paint (surprise, I did!). After putting the paint back in the shaker he opened the cans and confirmed that they were white, but since they had labels with varying color combinations that they had to be correct. He tried it on a new can and it was the same result. Instead of apologizing, planning for a solution, or maybe even just providing a modicum of customer service he just shrugged it off. I asked if I could return them and he said something to the effect of "well if they aren't what you want then that's your choice". ...not "of course", "absolutely", "yes, and I'm sorry this did not work out". While I was initially inclined to believe this may have been because I was female. I saw him interact with another (male) customer who came up to the counter as I was waiting on my paint. An associate had brought something up to the counter asking if a man could return them and this gentlemen said that he had used these numerous times and they have always worked. The customer then came to the counter and kindly explained why he was returning the item, and this gentlemen proceeded to ask if he read the directions. The customer said yes, and the gentlemen responded saying that he has used them many times and they have worked every time and he must not have used them properly, but yes, he can return them if he wants. It genuinely felt like he was trying to make this customer seem like an idiot. It is hard to describe the tone, inflection, and general nature of these interactions in writing; but I can assure you that this was not a one-off incident. He seems generally miserable and a horrible representation for your brand. I chose Zettler because they carried Benjamin Moore, but will most assuredly be going literally anywhere else going forward. read more

Just finished shopping at this store where I have gone numerous times. Needed to buy supplies to repair wood damage from a woodpecker. Had questions about the products purchased. Went to the customer service desk. The individual there was tapping away on his smart phone . For more than 5 min I stood there without any acknowledgement. He never looked up. I appreciate small co-op/Mom and Pop places, but the past two times I have went to this location I have walked out promptly, because they did not have the item I needed, and also, they were trying to charge $3 more for something cheaper at other Mom and Pop's in the area. Went here looking for a certain kind of dusk to dawn light that a neighbor told me I could probably find here...I didn't. It's a nice small hardware place vs the mega hardware stores down the road but I have gotten more and better help from the big box stores than I did here. Had to ask at the cashier where the bulbs where and she looked it up in a book and then pointed in the direction I should go (aisle 5 that way). Still couldn't find it so I had to track down someone who seemed rather lost about the entire store. Seemed he was getting chewed out by a higher up right before I found him. He took me to where the bulbs where and still seemed a bit dazed and confused but bless his heart he tried. Bulbs were there but not the special fixture that I needed to make it fit into the garage light. Bottom line...went to a big box store, had someone help me and found everything I needed. While Z's is closer I don't think you will find me returning here unless it's something very simple I need quickly. read more

I went in on Monday looking for some magic product to loosen 3 screws that had rusted in place on a clamp for a baffle on a bird feeder pole. Well, the magic product was named "Matt"! He had a can-do attitude and was extremely helpful, in getting the screws out AND in finding replacement screws. I guess as an old guy I'm prejudiced against young people, because I didn't have much hope when Matt offered to help. BIG mistake on my part! The total for the screws was only $1.29, but the goodwill generated for me was priceless. By the way, the cashier was Associate rck and she was very friendly and competent as well. I decided to buy some of the "mom and pop" sodas because I hated to charge only $1.29. I've shopped here before and had mostly good results, but now I've decided to shift the bulk of my hardware needs from the big box stores to here even if it may cost a bit more. Went in looking for a tool to remove tiny screws that were stuck in an expensive piece of equipment, preventing me from opening it to change the peculiar battery it uses. One of the managers selected a tool and spent about 20 minutes trying to remove the screws, even attempting to modify the tool on a grinder. Eventually he asked another employee to help. The second guy went to his car to get some specialized tool, spent another 10 minutes working on my problem, and finally removed the screws. I was pleasantly AMAZED that they would go to all that trouble for me. It was my first time in the store and I was going to buy a $5.00 screwdriver. These guys were incredibly helpful and generous with their time. They have earned a customer for life! read more

I love having a hardware store around the corner, especially one where I don't have to fight for a parking spot. I haven't confirmed this but this store is family owned business. If it isn't then it is certainly run like one. Every time I've gone in to visit I have been greeted, asked if assistance is needed, and/or been given friendly advice on how to attack my DIY home project. It may not have the variety of products a bigger hardware store such as Home Depot and Lowes may have but it's nice to be able to go in/out in less than 10 minutes. read more

I dropped in here one evening on the way home for something I needed. Conveniently located along Powell road with tons of parking. I've never really seen this place very busy. But, it sure beats having to drive down Sawmill road to the mega DIY stores. The store is literally crammed with household goods, tools and many of the items you would need for repair jobs. It can feel a bit overwhelming. The staff were laid back, but knowledgeable about the store layout (directed me right to what I was looking for). I like the convenience. Today I tried to buy propane, you pay at the front and and drive to the back, where I was told someone would be waiting for me, wrong! This is ridiculous, I yelled hello twice and nothing. I was kind of peeved that I bought two heavy bags of soil, and no one offered to help me. Granted I didn't ask, but you'd think that in a store where employees usually outnumber shoppers (even on this Saturday afternoon), that someone could help me somewhere along the line. I told the cashier that I had a hard enough time getting the bags into my cart - that if he could at least not make me take them out to scan them, that would be helpful. I underestimated my strength and didn't know it would be soooo much more difficult to get the soil out of my cart into my truckbed than it was to get them into the cart, but I really struggled and several people drove/walked by me without any offer to help at all. I guess chivalry is dead in Powell. On the bright side, my back only hurt a little that day. I got lucky with that. Maybe I'm stronger than I thought! These bags were 30 lb. at the very least (soil was very damp) and I weigh just under 100. I should also say that I was one of the only females in the store. All employees and just about all other customers were male. I would say I'm not going to be back but Zettler KNOWS that they're it for those of us who live north of 750 in Powell (for most hardware and gardening needs). read more

Super helpful and knowledgeable. Have been there a number of times with a variety of issues and have always been well taken care of by the staff. Frequently they have helped repair or fix an item without charge! Just today they helped me with a chainsaw issue and sent me on my way without a bill and the item running like new. Julie taught me everything I know about growing veggies, and Dave will track down and order you anything you need quickly that they might not have it stock. I seldom take the time to write reviews in favor or against retail stores; but in this case I must. The staff at Zettler on Powell Road are always willing to assist me with projects that go far beyond the purchase of a few screws or equipment from them. They truly want to help. I personally don't think their prices are any higher than the other big box hardware stores like Lowes or Home Depot, but if so I don't mind because they have saved me hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars in repair costs that I would have paid to a plumber, or some other contractor. Seriously, I cannot tell you how often I have gone to this store and asked for help on how to fix something in my house. Even five or six times in one day and they are willing to talk me through it and make recommendations. So, please pay no attention to others on this site that say their prices are too high or they are not helpful. If you have had a bad experience ask to speak to a manager and I'm certain they will be willing to make it right. I promise you I am not being paid to write this review. Nor have I been asked to do so by an employee of Zettler. My only motivation is to ensure their success so that I can continue to seek their guidance when I'm working on projects. I make a point to support this store, over their big box competitors, because I have never received the type of assistance at those stores like I get on a regular basis at Zettler. read more

I try to support local businesses but this store makes it too much of a sacrifice to do so. Today I went in to buy four 2"x4"x8' studs for a small project that I was doing at home. I was astounded by the price when I got to the register, 80% higher that Home Depot! But, I figured, I was here, I had the material and I may as well go through with the purchase. When I got the lumber home, one piece was so twisted that it could not be used. My daughter took it back to the store for a replacement and the replacement that she got, chosen by one of the employees at the store, was also too twisted to be used. I will go to the "big box" stores from now on and never use this store again. They are big boxes for a reason; they serve the needs of their customers. The free market system works well when it is indeed "free" and stores like this will not survive nor do they deserve to do so. read more
