Inflation ruined this place. Quality went down, basically everything has no flavor. Is crispy roasted pork still crispy, yes but that's the only thing good about it. If you are craving for good Chinese food in this area, definitely check out Zhangs BBQ! We did take out, and they only accept cash. Ordered the crispy pork and roasted duck. I would imagine that eating while everything's hot would be so much better, but the pork was a little dry with skins that weren't crispy; however, the duck even when cold was delicious. Usually the ducks I've had in Chinese BBQ can be very salty, but this one was a good balance of sweet savory combination. It was tender and fatty, and the skin has a good flavor to it too. This place smells like heaven. So, you walk in and you see some ducks hanging by their necks with their heads still attached and their feet (or the feet of their cousins) simmering below. I suppose this may not sound appetitzing, but it is. The crispy delicious duck skin, underneath a layer of fat, served with duck drippings. Enough to put you into a duck coma. But the pig... my first love. The neon red is probably a warning color "DO NOT EAT" but it smells so good -- how could you not? They give it to you with a small container of soy sauce to cut the sweetness. This place probably shouldn't pass a health inspection. The meats are not refrigerated or hot. But honestly, I don't care. I'll die for this stuff. If this was my last meal before hemorrhaging my insides out, I'm totally OK with that. This is what you do: Go in, order 1/2 of a duck, 1 pound of bright red barbecued pork. The total should be roughly $17. The man will chop it up into bits for you and pack it up. You pay CASH. You walk out, and not so secretly stuff yourself in the car with these goodies. This is enough for 2 people with leftovers. I have been coming back to Zhang barbecue for many years now, primarily for the duck. I saw some of the reviews saying they didn't like it. Sounds to me like it's a personal preference- , but I have had duck from different places and this is truly great. I like the precautions they take with Covid, which makes me feel better. How does China Bar-B-Que compare to other asian BBQ's, they fell short. The glass case, hanging duck, pig intestines, and bbq pork, are all present to give you the full effect, but it still has to deliver on flavor. I tried the bbq pork and it really didn't compare to other asian bbq places. The pork was dry and lacked the strong bbq flavor usually present. Maybe I caught it on an off day and I'll have to try it again to see if they deliver the same uneventful, dry, and disappointing bbq pork. read more

If you have never been to a Chinese BBQ place before, do not judge this book by it's cover! When you walk into this little gem, all you see are various types of meat hanging behind glass - many still whole and intact. You walk up to the small counter and order your meat by the pound. The pork is good, but the duck is really where I think they stand out. Depending on what you order (for example the whole roast pork) you can specify if you would like with or without fat. Then take your meat home and enjoy! I don't know if I've ever seen a place like this outside of a major city before, so this is another find that gets a bump in the stars because in this area it is best you can get. Being from LA and having moved to Michigan two years ago, this is the best place I've had so far for roast duck and pork (the one with the crispy skin). Growing up in LA's 626 area, I've always had roast duck and roast pork at least once a month and this is as good as it gets whenever I'm craving the flavors from home. Their cha siu (marinated BBQ pork with the red color) isn't as tender or as flavorful in comparison to the BBQ restaurants in LA but it's still good. Poultry is bought in halves or whole. BBQ pork roast pork is sold by the pound. You can indicate your preference for fatty or lean meat. They have pictures of combination plates that come with vegetables and rice with your choice of meat, but I was told those are no longer sold. I usually come here a few times every quarter and more when the weather is good. I live about 30 mins away and it is normally worth the drive for crispy roasted pork. However today I had an odd experience, the roasted pork I ordered was cold and had the rib bones still in it and they WEIGHT it with the bones which means I paid for that. There were bone fragments in nearly ever bite-yuk! I was really disappointed. Not certain what to say so I don't get bone fragments in my meat next time. This is expensive enough without paying for something I can't eat and since that has never happened before I am not sure why it happened. read more

My husband and I ventured over to China B-B-Que for a new experience. I consider myself a very good judge of Japanese food having lived there, but Chinese BBQ, I couldn't tell you the first thing about it. When we pulled up my husband's first question was "You did read reviews on this place right?" His question was well warranted, the blinds were pulled and there was no sign of life inside. Once we walked in I wanted to start clapping with glee. We ordered duck and BBQ pork. The lady working plucked a duck right off a skewer for us and started chopping away. We were soon joined by an elderly Chinese couple who just stared at us a while, until they finally asked what was on their minds: "How did you two find out about this place?" I tried to explain Yelp, but they were slightly confused. We then chatted with the couple and the women working a while about Hong Kong and our experiences in Japan. Extricating ourselves from our suddenly chatty new friends took longer than expected, however we left with some awesome food! The pork was supper yummy, my hubby added some sriracha to it to spice it up a bit. I was slightly surprised at how sweet the BBQ sauce was. The duck was nice and juicy, but I liked the pork better. But we will definitely be back. Little warning, if you do not like thinking about what you are eating this place will make you super-squeamish. The entire way back my hubby and I started planning how we were going to get our hippy friends into China B-B-Que so they can see what they eat before they eat it! Being from NY and having eaten Chinese BBQ my entire life, Zhang's BBQ definitely holds up. Is it the best Chinese BBQ I have ever had? No, but it is the best one that I have eaten at during my time in Michigan. I have tried their roast duck, roast pork, and bbq pork. All are solid and I recommend them all. For their duck, the smallest quantity they sell is half of a duck which sounds like a lot but ducks don't have that much meat unlike chicken. Last time I checked, it was about $10 for half of a duck. Here is a tip. For the roast pork and bbq pork, if you have a preference on lean meat, you can tell them. I always do and they are always nice to cater to that. However, slightly fatty tastes the best but this is when I am watching what I eat. Another tip. Definitely bring cash. But if you need to hit up an ATM, Chase isn't far. And another tip. I tried this place on the recommendation of Dea A and Brian N last week and came away sasimified. I had a half a duck, half pound of bbq pork and the steamed pig! The pig was the best of the bunch! It had a crunchy outer crust with a small layer of fat under it and it was sinful. 2 stars for the character, one star for the kindness (offering me a sample of the pig) and one star for the pig. The sign on the outside says and always has been labeled Zhangs BBQ. So I don't know why the name of this place is different than the signage. We have been going here for years to get traditional Chinese BBQ items. I mostly get the char sieu (roast pork) to serve as it is or to use in Chinese dishes. But they also sell beautiful roast ducks, roast geese and other parts of the pig and chicken. Today, I went in wanting to buy a rack of Chinese spare ribs, but they had sold out, so I took home some char sieu instead. It was nice and tasty as always. This place is very much like the Chinese BBQ places you see on the side streets in Kowloon, except that you can't really eat there whereas in Hong Kong, you usually can. The meats are hanging up behind a glass window and they free-form chop things for you on a cutting board that looks like it was recently part of a tree stump. This is a fine place. read more

It's not served in the same way as Peking Duck, but the meat is so tender and the skin is so crispy and rich. This is a take-out place, but definitely have some while it's hot. Their other offerings are beef tendon, squid, cuttle fish, beef shank, pork tongue, tripe and some offerings that rotate. You can order the crispy pork by the pound or the whole pig. The price is $7.85 / lb which is a little high. If you order by the pound, they will whack a chunk off and chop it up for you on the spot. My wife( Filipina ), loves the crispy pig. The duck at this place is very cheap compared to others part of the country. I purchased two duck. It was moist and flavorful. Lady was very nice. Also bought a pound of their braised tendon. Those were good also. This is an update, I came back for more so my total is 5 of them. She wrapped them in butcher paper so I could take them on the plane with me. I have visited several times and the quality varies. I've asked for 2 pounds of a fatty piece of BBQ pork and I received the old piece sitting in the pan. Clearly there was a much fresher piece hanging. The piece was 1.5 pounds and the owner asked if I would like more to fill out the order to 2 pounds. The next section of the pig was clearly in the desirable section therefore I said yes thinking I was going to receive a good piece, instead the owner cut the back of the leg bone to fill my order to 2.3 pounds. There are three Chinese style bbq places in the area and this place is far and away my favorite. My wife introduced me to this joint 3 years ago and I have been loyal ever since. It is an old school style bbq joint with its various meets hanging in window displays. My personal favorites are the bbq pork and the beef shank. The pork skin on the bbq pork is fantastic. For those of you who aren't familiar with Chinese BBQ items: Roast Duck - With the skin that's slightly sweet and mildly crispy, the duck is soft and meaty. For two people, half a duck will do. Sometimes we even have a bit of leftovers for lunch the next day. Red-roasted BBQ Pork - I'm not entirely sure how to explain what this is (or even why it's red). I just know that it's delicious. If you go through any major Chinatown, you will see ducks hanging in the window of various bbq restaurants. China Bar-B-Que a/k/a Zhang's B.B.Q. is the closest we have to that. On display, are the aforementioned ducks but also other favorite Chinese bar-b-que items such as char siu, i.e., roasted pork. This is mostly a take home place with a couple of tables. I have never seen anyone eat in there but I guess you could. The ducks are great! I went there about a month ago. Before, they would sell the ducks by the pound but now, they sell it by the duck. You choose the duck (either whole or half, I always get a whole) in the display window which still has the head attached, then they ask if you want it chopped, they pack it with the duck juice and away you go. (Note: They discard the duck's head, thank goodness!) The ducks are $16.90 plus tax. I usually bring the duck home and make white rice and some vegetables to go with it. Also good is going a few doors down to Tai Pan Bakery and getting their buttery rolls and making a duck sandwich. Yummy! There is also a sit down Chinese bar-b-que restaurant ion Wyandotte West in Windsor that I like but this place is close and mighty good! At Zhang's, I have also had the char siu which was also delicious. If you never had this type of food, don't be scared off. It's true that the ducks are greasy, has a lot of bones and not refrigerated. That to me is part of the charm as it makes me feel that I am eating a meal straight from Hong Kong and not from an American chop suey restaurant. read more

Here is what it comes down to in Michigan and Chinese BBQ. This is a take out place only don't expect to be seated and have a waiter come serve you. The BBQ is good not the best like in Toronto, Chicago or LA. Small BBQ places like this are meant for people to come at 10:30am -12 pm to pick up lunch and go and only at that time the food is at its peak right out of the oven if you come after 2pm anything left over is hung under the light to dry out.
