Cozy and perfect for breakfast. The challah french toast is delicious, and comes with eggs and a piece of sausage the size of a hamburger. For the $4 breakfast, the eggs were perfectly cooked and the breakfast potatoes were stand-outs. Usually potatoes are just there, something to soak up hot sauce and ketchup, but these were tasty in their own right. The biscuits were not the best I've had, but the homemade strawberry-rhubarb jam was great. read more

Not impressed. My wife and I stopped in after skiing around 1pm on a Sunday. They asked us 2-3 times if we are there for Breakfast? I asked if we can get Lunch each time. They said yes but its confusing why we are asked multiple times. Are they pushing their breakfast? I asked for a beer and was told none were in the cooler. Waitress asked me in a serious tone, "would I like a warm one?" Amazing. With water in hand, I had a bowl of chili and fries and it was just so-so to OK on my scale of what chili should be. As for the store/restaurant, it is a nice looking place and the people are nice and friendly. I've meant to go here for years, but miss it as we enter the Welches area. So glad I made it here. Set up with mismatched chairs, lodge-like couches and fireplace makes a real rustic energy. The owner is the server and he's been here for years. I totally love this place. Mellow vibe and great food. The chicken club san had a touch of rosemary that really set it off. Best curly fries anywhere. Seriously. grease-free and crispy. We came for Mother's Day breakfast. Seated in the back with an amazing view, this "little secret" restaurant didn't disappoint! Our meals were made of fresh ingredients and very tasty. Eating out on Mother's Day can be stressful and sometimes disappointing, but the Mt. Hood Cafe handles the crowds with perfection. I have a lot of foodie voices in my head and they kept saying "it's a funky building that has food, dude you need to stop and check it out. Well we stopped this morning and we were not disappointed. This is about the worst service/food I've ever had. Ordered a Bloody Mary and screw driver that was absolutely terrible, and tasted like straight tomato and orange juice. The server was lost for words when I asked for Marion berry waffles with my chicken and waffles and kept calling it a combo on the side. When I asked if was syrup, he said yes. It turned out to be Marion berry purée and I got no syrup. The waffles had no taste and I received chicken strips. I will say the gravy was very good. But that was the only thing that was good about this place. There were two other tables of people there and the server was pretty much nonexistent, and didn't show any sort of hospitality. There were dirt table around us, the kitchen staff was coughing all over the place. The server had 7 people show up and told them to hold on just to have us pay rather than seat them. As soon as we walked in the Mountain Cafe we were welcomed by a great cozy breakfast aroma. The kitchen is open-view on your right as soon as you walk in and you can see all the fresh ingredients they're working with. We ordered the Zig Zag scramble to split (smoked salmon, peppers, creme fraiche, capers) and coffees. The coffee came in thick mugs and was rich and warm. The scramble came pre-split for us without us requesting it to be (they even cut our biscuit in half!). The smoked salmon in the scramble was clearly fresh and some of the best I've had. The biscuit was also stand-out. Bonuses: river view out the window next to our table, a beautiful vase of river flowers on the table, and a generally warm vibe. The Monte Cristo was epic. Using buttery Challah bread for the french toast is an inspired choice. The home-made jam that came with the sandwich was also a nice touch. My wife and I split the behemoth sandwich and a salad bar (decent, fresh selection) and were satisfied. When we had the pizza on another occasion, I was a little disappointed. The crust was too soft, almost soggy, and the toppings were sparse. I do love the ambiance of this place and plan to return for either a sandwich, breakfast, or some dessert (the offerings in the case looked great). read more

I remember this location as a small general mountain supply store on the way to Mt Hood. It has been transformed into a great mountain restaurant with a very small general store component. The fruit and vegetables were fresh. All the food was well prepared and tasted just right. The waiter was easy going and very friendly. We will come back. read more

This is the closest restaurant to where we stay up on the mountain so we come here pretty often. Decent food but nothing special. Standard biscuits and gravy but I have had better, but good enough for me to keep ordering since it's still my favorite thing for breakfast. We've gone in with big groups several times now and they always easily accommodate everybody which is really appreciated. Service is always pretty good and I like the vibe of the place too, it's like a big cabin, very fitting for being up on the mountain! read more

Good food with a nice view. We had the My Hood scramble, biscuits and gravy, and the Huckleberry pancakes. I think the scramble was definitely the best bet because of the interesting ingredients. Great for breakfast! No frills, great window seating that looks down at a creek, and $4 breakfast that's perfect before hitting the slopes. The $4 breakfast is perfectly proportioned with two eggs any way, two slices of bacon, country potatoes and a buttery biscuit. The cafe also makes their own jam that is a perfect combination with the biscuit. Service can be slow on busy mornings, just try to be patient. Really bad experience. The place was incredibly understaffed for Sunday brunch. There were 2 people in the kitchen and 1 server. Even with that being said the server wasn't friendly, it took about an hour to get our food (which was cold), and there was a hair in my fruit cup. Our water and coffee was never refilled. It was just overall a bad start to our morning. We asked to talk to a manager and were told there wasn't one there that day. Really disappointed. We left hungry having only eaten a few bites of the food we waited so long for. We definitely won't be going again. Word to the wise: Go anywhere else! read more

We have been here a few times. At least 3-4 times I can be sure of. On whatever various days the food had mixed results. Most of the time it was between "ok" or sort of gross. The Monte "soggy" Cristo was exactly that. The turkey sandwich was so dry that the turkey was pretty much jerky. The bread might as well have been a crouton. The side salad consisted of mealy tomatoes, low quality lettuce with a vinaigrette that wasn't explained. My friend and I wanted a beer. Their taps were not available. No big deal right? Well, we got 3 cans of coors altogether and it was $4 for a can of coors. If we would have known this, or that his soggy sandwich was 14 bucks and my "jerky" sandwich was 13....we would have gone to Pub 26 but they were closed. Too expensive, customer was severely lacking, the place was dirty in and around the kitchen, food was lackluster on most days. It is a little sad. My friends and I went here during the summer and the food was somewhat better, better beer selection and the customer service was better.... On an off day. This place needs to change quickly. A lot of folks are mistaking this place for the ZigZag Inn, which is directly across the street, which specializes in pizza, and serves burgers and the like. The ZigZag store is on the north side of HWY 26 on the corner of Lolo Pass Road. This restaurant is one of the only places you can have breakfast besides in Govt. Camp and beyond that isn't a dank, dark cave with the prior night's aroma of beer and booze wafting in from the adjacent bar. Decoratively, it is really sweet inside. There's an unnecessary shop in there; in all honesty, it could easily do without the clutter and the souvenirs, the owner seems to be determined to generate income in too many ways and is stepping on his own toes by taking precious square footage and filling it with claptrap. The kitchen could easily be expanded to handle the customers, and a server station would greatly benefit the stressed staff. The Zigzag store is a nice place, and could be a really exceptional one, if it weren't for its complete lack of management. The service staff, although affable and nice, are completely lacking decent training, forgetful and get flustered if there are more than four tables to serve. But the worst part of the whole place is the kitchen. Almost every time we go to eat there, unless we are the only table being served, the breakfast takes between 30 minutes to an hour to get to the table. For breakfast. As someone who worked in a breakfast joint, It's mindboggling when a kitchen takes so long for breakfast items. No excuse for it. Many times, the servers don't pay attention to the order in which people are seated, and someone can sit for a long time before having orders taken, and see people who came in well after them have their order taken and receive their order, which is truly irritating, especially when they have to wait inordinate amounts of time for their food to begin with. The kitchen is NEVER consistent. They can't figure out the difference between over easy eggs and over medium, the benedicts are a gamble, sometimes you get the perfect benedict saucy egg, or sometimes you get a hard-boiled nugget; almost always sitting on a muffin saturated in vinegar water. The potatoes are always overcooked. I'm a sucker for crunchies, but these are often cooked to the point of leather where they get stuck in your teeth. The biscuits are microwaved to warm them up and will burn your lips off and then turn into little dough wads when you butter them. The service used to be much worse, there was a girl there who used to talk back to customers and argue with them, but she is gone. Now it's down to two or three people who are completely overwhelmed, and who on busy days, have no bussing help or recourse when the kitchen, which seems to make the order one dish at a time, puts them in a position where they are running on a treadmill trying to please irritated customers. The kitchen is the bottleneck, they seem to be lacking in the prep department or organization of the kitchen, or method of order filling... because it's the slowest kitchen on the mountain, even WORSE than the Cozy Cabin/Roasters after Rick sold it. The owner seems to be a non-presence, which on weekends is mind-boggling because they can be overwhelmed on weekends very easily, and they lose so many people simply by being understaffed and slow---I've witnessed time and time again where people come in and sit, and wait, and wait, and wait, and then walk out. We go because we like the place, and 1 time out of let's say five, it's pretty good. Today we went and the restaurant was slammed. They were out of benedicts and some other items on teh menu that are easily assembled with the right prep work. At one point there were more tables empty and piled with dirty dishes than there were full tables, and the servers were completely unable to keep up, nor did they have the space to store the dirty dishes. The owner was completely absent, which is unacceptable. On a day like this, the owner should have been there, helping, bussing, pushing the kitchen and talking to customers who in some cases waited a full hour for their food. This is really not acceptable, but sadly, the Zigzag store is the lesser of all the evils in the Welches area. The Zigzag Inn is greasy and dark and the lottery machines and bar make it seedy, the Barlow Trail is like a cave and smells like a bar, and the Whistle stop, well, it's the whistle stop. The Zigzag store could be a great place with a little decent management and some new staff or training for the existing staff in the kitchen. So, in summation, if you aren't in a hurry, if you don't mind your eggs being served whichever way the cook thinks is best, stone cold and sometimes served an hour after you order it, if you like friendly but super-stressed out servers.. then by all means, I recommend the Zigzag store. It's still better than the others in the area. But it could be so much better if someone cared enough to manage it prope read more

Stopped here on the evening of Friday 8-9-13 Best burger I have EVER had! Served on Chiabatta with aioli and cheese. My cousin had the Hawaiian burger and loved it. Fresh brewed iced tea is ALWAYS a plus and the server was sweet, personable and precious. Loved the curly fries. Wish I could go back tonight but back home in CA now, must say this place is one of the high lights of my trip. Only suggestions are a better supply of Oregon merchandise since this is a store and the arrangement walking in is a bit odd and confusing but once seated by window with the beautiful creek running by all is perfect......just loved this little place! I ordered a veggie sandwich that exceeded my expectations, with grilled onions and peppers, fresh avocado and sourdough bread. The curly fries were hot and tasty, too. Reading some of the other reviews, it seems this cafe really is confused with the restaurant across the highway! We were met with cheery greetings and the food was excellent. It would be nice if they featured some artwork pertaining to the area and perhaps moved the 'store' portion upstairs or to the back, as it gives a cluttered and chaotic feel to the restaurant as you walk in. Seemed a little under-lit. The cash register is in back of you as you come in and all of that adds to an odd ambiance. My wife and I stopped off here after coming down the mountain from a 2 day camping trip. We wanted a nice home cooked breakfast before heading home. After we walked inside the front doors we noticed line of cold cases toward the front, which were almost completely empty. There was only a few things, to include what looked like a three or more day old messy berry cobbler in a pan! This didn't look too appetizing from the start, but we sat down anyway. After tripping over some kind of buffet tables, we finally seated ourselves next to the window. We ordered a coffee , O.J. and Diet Coke. The waitress brought over a regular coke instead of diet. This might have been because the one waitress was the only person serving and running the cash register. As we sat waiting to order our meal there was a gentlemen next to us that was very vocal and alerted the waitress of his dissatisfaction. He first alerted the waitress of his dirt fork (actually he said "gross"). We then inspected ours and found my fork to be completely caked with food. I have had dirty forks before, but this one didn't even look like it went through the dishwasher, or whatever they used to clean silverware. Hmmm, could this be a coincidence that two forks were this dirty??? I think not! From this point on, our stomachs had turned for the worse. So....we ordered, against our better judgment, and waited patiently. During this time , the cook came out from her station and yelled over to a guest, and asked how he was doing. She then responded that she was "hung over, but hanging in there"!!! After she said that, I was wondering what kind of mistakes she would make while preparing our breakfast. At this point we really didn't want to wait for that. Our final decision to walk out of this restaurant before I meal even came was when that same customer sitting next to us, complained again that his fried eggs were raw in the middle. So....we ran out of there as quick as possible and drove to another restaurant about a quarter mile down the road. Guess what, the food was great and no dirty forks!!
