A very cozy and nice place that definitely gives you that lodge an woods feel as you eat and upon entering the establishment. A perfect restaurant and place for the location. We found this quaint log cabinesque stop on our trek up to Mt. Hood recently. Located just before the Ranger Station on the left eastbound on 26 it can be hard to see on a foggy or rainy day. Make sure you stop in, they're super nice folks, very homey, and you get the mountain feel the moment you walk in if you have not got it by the time you reach there. Zig Zag is a combination one-stop mountain shop, hot food energy station, chilling out or warming up stop, and nik-nak store. When warming up or having a bite, make sure to sit in the back and contemplate nature's best with Bear Creek running just behind Zig Zag! The décor is typical of its environment. I definitely recommend this restaurant for breakfast and brunch. Family owned and very cozy indoors. Friends and I found this gem on our way to a snowboarding trip to the mountains. Over the summer, new owners remodelled and re-opened Zigzag Mountain Store & Cafe, which originally opened in 1924. The interior is a sort of updated log cabin look - elegant, rustic but contemporary and very clean and comfortble. As you enter, there is a deli counter to the right, convenient store merchandise in the center, some racks of local clothing & merch, wines anda sofa by a small fire place. On the other side of the stairs form the 2nd floor/mezzanine, there are cafe tables and chairs. The menu has lots of good Italian dishes - and fantastic baked goods are available. These folks provide excellent customer service! When a wine that the staff recommended proved bad - they happily sent me a refund - even though I had already returned home from my trip! Don't forget - it's quite chilly up here in late summer - but you can get a cozy sweatshirt at the Zigzag Mountain Store if you need one! read more

It's been a year since visiting zigzag cafe for breakfast/brunch. Not sure if there are new owners or cooks, but I won't be back. We sat ourselves after trying to make contact with any staff- no one would look at us while standing in the restaurant waiting to be seated. Should have left at that time. The mimosas were served in pint glasses, and were not good. I'd prefer quality in smaller glasses over quantity. All three dishes were bland, no flavor/spices, fries cold and all meals overpriced, especially for quality of food. Fruit cup for 5.95 was melons, no berries. Skip this mediocre cafe. read more

Been going there for years as locals. We try to spread our $$ out to all local restaurants to help out. Went here for breakfast. After well over an hour and having to set out own table and getting our own coffee we finally decided to ask about our food as it hadn't arrived. ......no reply....but about 5 minutes later check shows up at table. This I took offense to. I gave them back the check and simply said...you need to hold on to this at least until food arrives. Owner comes over to table and claims I said I wouldn't.oay. I said no would be more than happy to pay but didn't appreciate long wait with no word and then getting handed check.... Then he proceeds to tell ALl OF US to leave and never come back. We did get food, tried a few times to pay and he just kept saying...leave and don't come back. Lived on the Mtn many years and two people of our party of four were elderly and in their '80's. Very very wrong way to treat senior citizens who did nothing wrong. Sorry pal but I waited over a month to think this over before posting. I don't.like.leaving negative reviews. I knew I was working into a cafe/gift shop so I'm not going to conment about anything other than the food and service. There were bout two other tables inside eating so tI asnt hat busy this morning. We were greeted by an older man and he seated us. I had a party of 3 and the food took about minutes. The orange juice came out quick, but man he couldnt even filled it up all the way and had much left in the flask they poured it from. Plus the glasses were different and one cup was filled to the same level but had less in it. He definitely skimped on a simple drink, saving cents customer to customer. This place doesn't even deserve one star. Flies crawling all over the windows and dirty. Sadly we didn't notice it until after we ordered because we were too distracted by all the dirty looks from a few of the patrons and the older gentleman that was waiting on us. The older gentleman would hide behind the merchandise racks, just so he could keep an eye on us and it was so bizarre. After about an hour, our food hadn't arrived and we noticed that everyone had come and gone. That's when we asked about our order and apparently they "lost" our order and had to retake it. Interesting... Maybe if they weren't so focused on staring at us and do their job, maybe orders wouldn't get "lost". Unbelievable! (Some background: I look Mexican even though I'm not, however my partner is Mexican but he is often times mistaken for being Turkish due to having facial hair - and in case you are wondering, no it's not a full on beard.) We were wearing normal clothes, have normal hair color, and we are well kept, so nothing should have stood out about us to warrant the treatment we received. Other establishments in the area did not have this atmosphere and we don't encounter this often in the areas that we live nor do we have an experience of this magnitude in the small town that I grew up in. It was very unsettling and uncomfortable to sit through but the options in the area are limited during the early hours of the morning. The food was okay with the exception of the sausage because it was greasy and the meat looked unrecognizable. I'll never go here and wouldn't ever recommend this place. Drove from Portland to specifically eat at this establishment. Hours posted on map quest is open till 8:00 pm. They in-fact close at 2:00pm. Spoke to the owner and they couldn't be bothered to care. Claimed they couldn't up date their hours and really weren't bothered by our inconvenience. If they care that little about their accuracy of hours how much do they care about food quality and service. Ended up at Zigzag Inn. Fantastic experience. read more

I specifically took a road trip from LA to eat their Marion Berry pie. It has to be the best pie I've had in all my life. I had a slice a few years back and it had been on my mind since. I bought a whole pie and brought it back. Stayed out in the PNW an extra 5 days just for it. It lasted 4 days and everyone enjoyed the samples I gave. As far as the food, it's good but I'm all about that addicting pie. Jerry is the best. I'll be there every summer . read more

Love, love, love this place! Great breakfast and lunches. View of creek and log cabin style place make this a peaceful place to stop and stay a bit. Just a heads up, they just have straight pour black coffee, no lattes or such, but the food more than makes up for that. Many locals partake of this little gem. read more

Update: Second visit was just as good as the first. Had sourdough lumberjack breakfast - was delicious. Chicken salad sandwich was excellent. They were friendly and quick. It was a tad warm in here - it was 85 degrees outside and probably close to that inside. :) Still a very enjoyable experience. Original review: Had an excellent lunch here. The Monte Cristo sandwich was fabulous. The chicken-fried steak breakfast was outstanding. They make their chicken fried steak from scratch (it's not frozen or from a box). The food was really good! My favorite was the Marion berry waffle, although the eggs Benedict and French toast were also delicious! The inside was cozy aside from it also housing unused kitchen equipment. A nice throw would go a long way to sprucing up the torn sofa in front of the fireplace. My wife and I went here on the way back from a weekend rafting trip in Maupin, OR. After waiting for several minutes in a big line at the Maupin Breakfast place, we bagged that idea and headed back West towards home and landed upon this place. The wooden sign with painted words said that it had been listed as not a good place in 2005, and then in 2008, new ownership came in and completely revitalized the place. We arrived a bit after 11:am and got a great seat near the back that had a nice view of the creek. The place was really busy with the smells of sausage, potatoes, coffee and pastry lingering in the air. What a welcome scent for us hungry travelers. The waitress was covering the entire place by herself and doing a fantastic! job at it. I had the Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs with Potatoes and my wife had the order of biscuits and sausage gravy with Rosemary. Both dishes were excellent and upon walking out of the restaurant I told my wife that anytime we are in the Mt. Hood area and needing some Breakfast we are going here - no questions about it. I highly recommend this place and this was one of those "meant to be moments" that we landed up here and had a great experience, as opposed to "settling" for the really busy and crowded breakfast spot in Maupin. read more

This place is cute once you get past the general store merchandise, to the seating area in back. The whole back of the place is windows that overlook a small creek, which is nice to look at while you wait for your waitress. It is a pretty open concept, the coolers for the milk and veggies is right there next to the shelves with convenience store items, next to a couple of diner tables people are eating at. I notice the wine bar is a buffet table with wine glasses on it with a few bottles of wine to pick from right next to the stairs. It has a mountain feel to it, so it all seems to work. We are from the area and go up here for breakfast when we don't feel like driving to town to go eat out on the weekend. They don't serve anything but breakfast food when the breakfast menu is in play, so all you nonbreakfast food eaters out there like me, be warned. I don't mind breakfast food, I just am not one that seeks it out like my husband does. I manage to survive during their breakfast hours, so how can I complain? I usually get the chicken fried steak with rosemary gravy. This is the most expensive item on the menu for breakfast at $9. You get chunk style potatoes, a biscuit that's fluffy and moist, a pretty good size chicken fried steak with gravy and an egg. I always get my gravy on the side, so it will come in a little bowl. The chicken fried steak is not greasy like some I have had in the past, but has a nice flavor and texture to it. I like them more for lunch and dinner. The turkey sandwich with jalepeno jelly is a good selection, as well. I get that with a salad and all is good with the world. Now, the dinner selection, I really enjoy the spaghetti a lot but like another reviewer, may have hit them on a bad day and hope they did not change that sauce over to the chili like substance they served. Up to that point, it was a great dinner. My husband gets the lasagna and says it is really good. The portions are pretty good, as well. We have had the pork chops and those were good, too, not dried out, as with some chops you get. There is an upstairs, too, we went on Mother's day for breakfast, and everyone else had the same idea, we went upstairs, where it was pretty stuffy compared to downstairs, it is open to the downstairs, so it keeps with the whole lodge feel. There is a tv and couch upstairs, so you can enjoy a iced tea and bring your computer to use on the free wi-fi connection. I would say, it is a good place overall to stop in if you are up on the mountain, but like other reviewers have said, service can be really slow, even when there is nobody in there but you and the view out back. read more

Cozy and perfect for breakfast. The challah french toast is delicious, and comes with eggs and a piece of sausage the size of a hamburger. For the $4 breakfast, the eggs were perfectly cooked and the breakfast potatoes were stand-outs. Usually potatoes are just there, something to soak up hot sauce and ketchup, but these were tasty in their own right. We came in before closing and saw from menu they had stopped serving breakfast but they still made breakfast for us and it was delicious! This is about the worst service/food I've ever had. Ordered a Bloody Mary and screw driver that was absolutely terrible, and tasted like straight tomato and orange juice. The server was lost for words when I asked for Marion berry waffles with my chicken and waffles and kept calling it a combo on the side. When I asked if was syrup, he said yes. It turned out to be Marion berry purée and I got no syrup. The waffles had no taste and I received chicken strips. I will say the gravy was very good. But that was the only thing that was good about this place. There were two other tables of people there and the server was pretty much nonexistent, and didn't show any sort of hospitality. There were dirt table around us, the kitchen staff was coughing all over the place. The server had 7 people show up and told them to hold on just to have us pay rather than seat them. Not worth a penny, don't waste your time. Not even worth one star. read more
