Came here with a friend today for lunch. Neither one of us had been before, but we quite enjoyed it. Casual setting where you go through a line and create your own meal. The staff were very friendly and helpful! I chose the veggie pulau rice, steamed vegetables and vindalu sauce with added cabbage for garnish. All of the flavors worked really well together! I like spicier dishes, so the vindalu was perfect! I also got a gulab jamun for dessert to go. I've had it served warm before, so it was a little odd to have it cold. Since I brought it home, I just popped it in the microwave for a few seconds. I don't live nearby, so I don't know if I'll be back, but I think they have a location in the downtown food court. Zimbu is a refreshing alternative to your usual dining experience. They are worthy of their high Yelp rating. As of this writing, next week (February 20-22) they are having a Second Anniversary special with 50% off dine in or take out. I highly recommend you support this business and try them out. Nepalese flavors are similar to Indian food, but the dishes are different. Here, you build a bowl or build a roll. You pick your base (kind of rice, pulao or noodles), protein (or vegetarian choice), and your choice of sauces. And you choose if you want stir fried veggies or fresh veggies. We got a bowl and a roll. The roll is a Nepalese version of a burrito. For the bowl, we chose the rice, but not the white Basmati rice, it was basically a fried rice with vegetables and it was good. The protein was Timmur chicken, nicely spiced (not hot spicey). And we had it with Vindalu sauce. We chose the fresh veggies that had cucumber chunks, shredded carrots, green onions, and didn't opt for the jalapeño peppers. This was very tasty. The fresh veggies made it. The flavors combined were just delicious. We also tried a roll with Tikka chicken, Mango Tamarind dressing, and Tikka sauce for the dipping sauce. Also tasty. Be warned: This thing is HUGE. The Tikka chicken is chicken breast, but it was moist and tender. I forgot to exclude the jalapeños and got a few bites that were potent, but I fished them out. The jalapeños rubbed enough oil into the veggies that even when removed, provided a nice kick for me. We also tried the momo's. These are dumplings filled with spiced chicken. I think the spice was similar to the Timmur chicken. The sauce that it was in was spicey. I guess if you're living in a cold climate, you gotta have those spices to warm you up! We both had mango lassi. So good. There was an Indian restaurant we went to here in Sandy that the mango lassi just tasted off. This was good and was a good complement to the meal. The owner comped us a dessert to share and it was a traditional Gulab Jamun, a deep fried dough balls drenched in syrup, about an inch-and-a-half in diameter. One was enough for the both of us as it is super sweet. Service was very friendly and caring. They made sure we understood everything every step of the way. The restaurant is cozy. All the tables are along one wall all the way down the length of the restaurant. We will be going again next week for their anniversary special. 5* = A top favorite. Mind-blowing good. I will definitely return and I will go out of my way to go here. Worth every dime of my money. 4* = Outstanding. Top-tier. Some elements not quite as good as it gets, but it still is worthy of my regular business. 3* = Good experience. Incredible service. I felt like a friend who they were feeding. Hari and Cava (I hope I spelled it right!) were the kindest and took their time with helping me find out what to eat. And once we got the food, oh my goodness. Wow. It tastes like my dad's homemade food when he spends all day cooking. There were a few moments in the meal when I wanted to cry. Located in a new shopping area, it's easy to drive by thinking stores are still under construction. They have two entrance/exit doors, streetside and parking lot side of a nice new building. Great that there's lots of free parking available! I arrived at 11 a.m. when the restaurant opened. The seats and tables were clean, the floor was spacious, and the decor was welcoming. They were rocking oldies on the musical Playlist at the time :) The customer service is fantastic! The employee behind the counter provided me with samples of the different sauces so I could make a better ordering decision. He also graciously explained the ingredients in the different "base" and proteins available for the curry bowl. I dined in and enjoyed every bite of the tofu veggie pulao with tikka sauce. The spicy tofu had a nice kick to it so I was glad to also try their refreshing almond milk beverage. Yum, that had a hint of saffron and small pieces of pistachio. I appreciate the level of professional conversation from the employee that served me today. By the time we arrived, the food was well overcooked and have been sitting in the warmer stations for quite some time. I could tell that a lot of the meat and paneer was dried out and not very appetizing. Zimbu's serving style reminds me a lot of the restaurant chain called Zao. They offered the option to make custom bowls. First you choose your base of rice or a salad. Second, you choose your protein (options include chicken, pork or paneer). You can always skip any protein if you'd like. Lastly, you get the option to add on vegetables and a choice of sauce. Since it was slow, the staff was kind enough to offer a samples of the different sauce options. Some of the sauce was spicy, some were more on the side of sweet. Tikka Masala Bowl: I ended up choosing rice with a bit of salad mix as my base. Added chicken, veggies and topped it with the classic Tikka Masala sauce. Chicken was dry but the sauce helped bring it back to life and moisten it back up. Curry Dumplings a.k.a Momos: My sister had previously tried out this restaurant and recommended to order the handmade curry dumplings prior to your arrival. Since they are made fresh, you could be waiting about 15 to 20 mins. Not ideal if you're short on time. The fresh dumplings are very tasty and filling. I would recommend everything to try them if you have the time to wait. Overall, I would return to the restaurant to give it a second try. Even though the food wasn't as fresh as I hoped it would be (with the exception of the dumplings - super tasty), the staff was really kind and open to us asking questions. Boo Zimbu! It looks so fresh and clean, we though it had to be good. The Tikka chicken was so dry. No amount of sauce could make up for it and the sauce was meh. When I went back for more napkins, I saw a large tub of orange chicken breasts sitting on the counter. They had not moved in the 20 minutes or so since we placed our order the kid was busy cleaning up but there they sat. The chicken was dry and flavorless, the noodles were non existent. She was actually scraping the heating dish that was mostly empty. They barely covered the bottom of my dish. Looking at the lack of food I asked for a price of Nan bread. It showed a plate with several pieces on it so I thought it fill the gap in my gut. It came to the table a bit later. 1 piece that was raw and burnt at the same time. Of course the drink was another 3 bucks bringing my total to $17 for lunch. Most of it ended up in the trash. My only complaint is that it was on the bland, not only unspicy, but lacking some flavor. My husband had the coconut curry which he liked. I recently tried Zimbu, at their new location in Sandy. Now, there are a lot of Indian/Nepali restaurants around, so what makes this different? Let me tell you! It's a fast casual, build your own curry bowl place, with a light modern vibe. While they do have some entree dishes you can choose from, building your own curry bowl is definitely the way to go! Choose your base, protein, veggie, and sauce for only $11.49! Unsure what a certain meat or sauce is? No problem, they'll give you a little sample of it to try. How cool right? The staff is so friendly, quick to help, and were so accommodating. I chose the Veggie Pulao (which is basically just basmati rice with diced veggies in it), the Timmur Chicken (which I had never had before, but after trying a sample, liked the peppery flavor), Stir Fry Vegetables (they were steamed mixed Asian vegetables that were soft and didn't have much flavor), then topped the meat and veggies with the Coconut Sauce (which is a Coconut Korma sauce). I liked what I chose, but want to go back and try other combinations. I also splurged and got the Samosas and Spring Rolls and they were heaven! Exactly what you think classic Samosas and Spring Rolls will taste like. The secret MVP is the dipping sauce it tastes like a vinegar Sweet & Sour sauce that cuts the fattiness of getting fried. Zimbu recently opened their second location in Sandy. I was super excited that I can only drive 5 mins to devour their delicacies. They have also revamped their menu, which was very easy to follow. The guy at the food station was very helpful and nice. They have options to pick from basmati rice, fried rice and noodles, and you can pick your sides. We got noodles with chicken, and picked our sauce and added any condiments we wanted. We also got their pork chilli rice bowl which was my favorite, and their jhol momo ( chicken dumpling with tomato based soup sauce). It was perfect for this cold weather.
