They rent some decent used gear, but the employees don't know what they are selling and like every other business I visited in Springdale they don't treat their customers well... just like tourist dollar signs. They will walk away in the middle of a conversation talking about what you need to rent. We were able to book this trip last minute. It was me (mom), my 10 year old daughter and 8 year old daughter. I can't tell you how remarkable the trip was. We got to climb up boulders, repel down cliffs, slide through tight spaces. We all loved it! My 10 year old thought the best part was that they taught you how to rig your equipment and then they let you do it yourself. Michael was an amazing guide. Zion Adventure Co. is a great place to go to if you are planning to hike The Narrows. They have equipment if you want to trek The Narrows during the summer or winter. They have packages for other types of tours too, such as canyoneering, biking, rock climbing. They also even have a guided tour of The Narrows if that's what you want. During the summer, the package you want to get is the 'Warm Water Package': 1) neoprene socks, 2) canyoneering shoes, and 3) walking stick. That's it! And for $23, it is not a bad deal at all. The deal also comes with a short, 9 minute instructional video about The Narrows. The video gives you warnings about flash floods, hiking etiquette, and what to do in a case of a flash flood. The shoes, socks, and hiking stick were great -- shoes definitely help against slipping and sliding on the rocks that are in the river, socks help keep your feet warm, and hiking stick allows you to feel for any rocks that are in front of you before you take a step. *If you're headed to The Narrows during colder weather, they do have a 'Cold Weather Package', so don't you worry! For the shoes, the number inside the shoe is much larger than your shoe size. This is because they have accounted for the neoprene socks as well. When I tried on my size "8" with the neoprene socks, it felt snug, and there was about a thumb's width space from my toe to the front of the shoe. I thought, "Ok, this is fine because I have some extra space in the front of the shoe." By the time I finished the hike 6 hours later, the side of my right toe was in pain due to my feet swelling (I didn't help myself by hiking Angel's Landing the next day). So, I would recommending getting 1/2 or even 1 size larger. Also, when I got out of The Narrows and onto the paved trail again, I quickly took my shoes off to change into my tennis shoes. I noticed my feet were sort of a blue/purple color, and the side of my toe was bleeding. Yikes :/ Make sure to take rests during the hike, and maybe take off your shoes to let your feet rest!! AND CUT YOUR TOENAILS BEFORE!! Since the shoes and socks are going to be snug AND you'll be hiking for hours, your nails will be digging into your skin and that will not be a good situation to be in while you're on vacation. I would also recommending getting a dry bag to put all your stuff in (we got a medium and it was only $5!). I pretty much put all my belongings into the dry bag, and then put that bag into my backpack. It was definitely a life saver, as I did fall into the river a couple of times. If you have any questions at all, any employee will be happy to help you; they're super friendly and knowledgeable! Tip: If you're here during the summer, but especially summer weekends, I recommend getting to the place right as it opens, or even before it opens. Sizes will run out quick, and hiking sticks in your size will run out (hiking sticks need to be shoulder height). Or, you can even rent the stuff the night before, and then head out to your hike early the next day. read more

We rented the narrows dry suit package from here which included a dry suit, neoprene socks, hiking boots, and a walking stick. I made a reservation 2 days before our hike but when we got there to pick up our stuff the night before, they couldn't find our reservation (minus a star). I would still recommend this place because they were able to help me find a different size that still fit (thank goodness because the narrows was the reason I went to zion in the first place!). Just make sure to call and confirm your reservation or pick up your stuff the night before so you don't get caught in my situation and waste time trying to figure it out in the morning or even worse, not have a suit to wear in the freezing water. read more

Highly recommend this place for info and gear rentals before heading into the Narrows. My family and I really enjoyed waking thru cold water in a chilly slot canyon, The Narrows, and that comfort was only possible with the gear we rented here. We saw lots of people trying to get through the Narrows without the insulated gear we donned and many were much slower and obviously uncomfortable and with kids its a must if you plan to travel any distance up the canyon. The day we went the water temp was 55 degrees and the air temp in the canyon was 61 and we were comfortable with the gortex water proof pants, neoprene socks and 5 10 river shoes we rented and for the kids we rented whole gortex suit plus socks and shoes like we wore and they did great and even enjoyed plowing thru the cold current. The suits and pants don't breathe so leggings or shorts underneath are fine and layering top with just pants worked well depending on sun/shade/energy level exerting. For family of 4 was about $200 for rental, so not cheap but can't come to Zion and miss the Narrows and you will be a lot happier if you're not hypothermic while doing it. read more

Make sure to bring all your belongings before having to seek out any services from the Zion Adventure Company. We were very excited to begin our trip and even try out some canyoneering. We are active women and could't wait to get to this place and rent, buy, and get totally geared up. Once we arrived, there was a long haired blond woman with absolutely no costumer service or people skills. She was short in her responses, rude, and downright discouraging. The other woman, similarly, did not acknowledge my presence, although I was waiting in front of the cash register for over 8 minutes, while she took phone call after phone call, ignoring the fact that I was wanted to and was ready to make a purchase. I'm not a demanding person, so I patiently waited while the other cash register attendant ignored me and also happily took a phone call. I was about to leave, when a very kind young and tall man, approached and asked if he could help me. He was the only reason I bought anything in the store, which was a very small purchase, as I chose to take my business and hard earned money elsewhere. It's really too bad. I've lived in California, New Mexico, and New York. It's just unbelievable, the perceived racism I have experienced in this state. Or, perhaps it is a sort of puritan bias? I will come back, as I love Zion. I will not spend any money at the Zion Adventure Company...EVER! The Hampton Inn staff were AWESOME, very genuine and warm. We will come out and stay here time and time again. It feels like the staff is far more educated, attuned to issues of diversity, and are multiculturally sensitive. I consider the Hampton Inn a "safety zone," if you are a person of color or share other attributes of difference, you know what I mean. Needless to say we decided against giving them our weekly business and chose instead to rebook our trip and get geared up in our own state, or even in Las Vegas...I'd rather they have my business. read more

I wish I could give Zion Adventure Company a better rating. My experience started very well - went in late in the afternoon to rent equipment to hike the Narrow's and was promptly served by a brand new employee that couldn't have been more helpful. Walked out with two sets of everything I needed and the equipment worked well. It was the return experience that completely soured me on the company. What should have been a simple drop off, they check the equipment, and I move on instead turned into being treated like I was back in kindergarten. The person running the drop off clearly had no idea what customer service is. She insisted that I separate all the equipment on specific tables, ensure the booties where turned inside out, place items in their cleaning buckets, etc. This company truly does not understand that the customers are not there to do their jobs but they are there to serve the customer. Best advice - go find another rental company in town; there are plenty of them. read more

Narrows hiking ? this place is a must especially in the Fall when the temps drop. We hiked this trail during the 3rd week in october and we are so glad we rented the pants/shoes/socks/stick package because that water was COLD!!! We were very comfortable the entire time and were able to go 3 miles beyond the 1 mile riverside entryway w/ no issues. We saw others in just normal pants and water shoes having to turn back because of the weather. Just make a judgement call on your part, if you are ok walking in cold water or if the weather is hot and you have good water shoes you probably can bypass these rentals but if you are like ME and always cold just pay the fee and allow yourself to enjoy the narrows!! My one area of caution is that I do not think the shoes/socks are good to walk in after you completed the narrows and have the 1 mile on paved path back to the shuttle (after your shoes are wet) it can be very uncomfortable so I suggest carrying a pair of dry shoes to switch into after the hike. Also someone on here said the cost was 25bux but when we went last week it was 41 bux for the package. Lastly if you are carrying anything you need dry I suggest renting a dry bag!! One last thing, if you are hiking in the morning (before 8am) I suggest going to the Store late in the evening the night before around 6:30-7pm to rent your equipment so that you can do the video and paperwork and secure some if not all of your equip the night before. we did this and we lucked out and they had everything we needed that night so we could avoid having to delay our hike until after 8am when the store open which means you really won't hit the train till like 9:30am. Now we were told that normally they don't have everything back from the other hikers in time so sometimes you can only get some of your equip and still have to return the next morning but even then you can just pop in and pick up your missing items vs. wasting precious mornings hours doing paperwork etc. !! we started our hike at 7:45am and it was perfect since the trail was fairly empty and so we could enjoy the zen of the narrows!! Once midday hit the place get crowded so if possible start early!!! Lastly be careful w/ the pants! If you damage the bottom portion (the suction part) you will be charged $25 bux so pay attention when the employees show you how to put them on and take them off. We were ok but I can see how easily the bottoms can be ripped! read more

I called Zion Adventure Company ahead of time and made a reservation. I asked for an email confirmation, but it never arrived. However, since they actually charged my card for the deposit, I wasn't really worried about it. I showed up on the day of the hike, and their system couldn't find my reservation by name. Swiping my credit card, they found the card in the system but it was associated with a different name...What? The staff was friendly though and helped me sort it out eventually. Took a bit longer, but sure, not a problem. Next comes the fitting. Again, the staff was friendly, but they didn't have a size that fit me well. I ended up with a dry suit that's a bit big for me, but whatever, not a big deal. I left the place pretty happy, ready for the hike. After my first waist level dip into the water in the Narrows, I came out noticing water leaking into one of the legs. AUGH. It was cold, and the feeling of wet jean sticking to my leg...It feels awful. I examined the dry suit, and noticed a pretty obvious place where a patch is falling off. That was about 30 minutes into the hike. I didn't really have an option but to keep going, so I spent the rest of my hike with one leg wet and getting dumb from the cold water that stayed inside. The worst part is their attitude when I went to return the dry suit. Told them about the leaking, they just shrugged and told me that "they'll take it for testing". I pointed out the location where it leaked, and they didn't really say anything. Overall, not a single apology. Narrows itself was beautiful enough that I still had a good time, but their total apathy to their customers and lack of care that their rental was leaking still resulted in this poor review for them. Next time, will consider a different company. read more

So happy with my Vasque Inhaler II Hiking Shoes!!! I had been stubborn and walking all around Zion in very cheap sandals and even cheaper water shoes leaving me with extremely painful blisters!! I had heard about Zion Adventure Company from their gear rentals for The Narrows and thought I would try them out first. The Vasque Hiking shoes were limited (3 pairs for women), but very comfortable, reasonably priced and were perfect for protecting my feet for the rest of our trip. I am pretty slow hiker due to previous knee injury and these shoes helped me feel confident trekking up and down the slick rocks of Zion!! Again, very happy with my purchase and would highly recommend if you are looking for gear in Zion!! read more

Shoes were very comfortable, had really good ankle stabilization, and helped prevent my toesies from freezing up. my advice is to bring a pair of sandals in your backpack so that you can wear sandals once you're done with the narrows cause you will definitely want to give your feet a break from those shoes after hiking in them for 3+ hrs read more

Great place, really great. I would not recommend going to Zion without involving this place. Even if you don't buy or rent anything from here, the staff here is so sincerely passionate and knowledgeable about Zion and its many activities, they will really help to make your visit a maximally enjoyable one. Kudos to the founder/owner -- he's really assembled a phenomenal team. And their website is fantastic too -- very informative on every single activity there is to do in Zion -- way better than the official park website. I definitely recommend that anyone visiting Zion at least stop by this place. Oh yes, the owner's 8 year old boy works there (pro bono I assume), and boy is he a wunderkind -- he knows everything there is to know about the park, the equipment at ZAC, the meaning of life, you name it ha! What a great little dynamo! Below is a list of activities we did through ZAC: Bottom-Up Narrows hike: 4 stars. Very unique, fun, but given that we did it in mid-November, it was cold. We rented all the needed gear -- dry suits, neoprene socks, water shoes, walking stick -- from Zion Adventure Company (great place -- see separate review). We went from The Temple of Sinawa all the way to the end of Wall Street, which in retrospect I think was a bit too far -- after the Wall Street-Orderville fork, there wasn't much new too see. On the way back we used the dry suits to mostly float back, and as a result eventually we got soaked through and through. On the way back to the car on the Riverside walk, I was trembling uncontrollably and my fingertips were turning -- the early signs of hypothermia. But we made it back ok and once I took a hot shower and changed I felt fine. This was a good but not great hike -- walking on round boulders submerged in water gets old after a while. Plus this hike would be MUCH better done in summer when the weather is warm. Full-day Canyoneering Adventure Day with Zion Adventure Company: 5 stars. Very cool activity. Around 3 miles of total hiking with gear, and 3-6 rappels depending on your group size and speed. Scary, but by the end I had learned a lot and overcome those fears, it felt good. Our guide from ZAC (Hank) was fantastic. Highly recommended activity. Kolob Terrace Downhill Bike Ride: 3 stars. Booked through ZAC, our guide was Scott -- good guy. This was fun but I had a few gripes about it -- 1. There was much more strenuous uphill than the posted 10% -- it was, or it felt like, at least 30% was uphill and/or against the wind. This fact made this day planned as a "rest day" really just another hard day. 2. A little chilly becomes very cold quickly as one is going downhill at 20-30 mph. But overall it was fun and a good break from hiking. WARNING: Control your speed on this one, one of our party members went too fast, wobbled, and wiped out hard. Fortunately he was overall ok. But be forewarned -- you can build significant speed here if you are not careful. read more

I would suggest renting the shoes for the 16 mile Narrows hike. They provide lots of stability and make it much easier to hike in the water. However, the neoprene socks were terrible! All 8 of my group members had horrible blisters and foot pain after a few hours of hiking. Once we switched to wool socks we were all much more comfortable. They don't tell you this, but also bring some Keens or Chacos to wear during the first few miles of the trip-- you will be much happier! read more

Glad we were able to rent gear to hike The Narrows. We came in around 10AM and most of their rental inventory were almost gone. For 42$ I received waterproof (ish) pants, socks, shoes, and a hiking stick. For an additional 10$ I also rented a backpack which came with a dry bag. All of these items I recommend if you're thinking about hiking The Narrows when it's Spring. The water was 40 degrees the day I went. I do agree with some reviews that some of their gear are beat up/torn, but I think it did a good enough job. My normal pants which I wore under their pants were wet after the hike, so were my socks but it didn't affect me at all. What was most important were the shoes I rented. It had really good traction/grip and held up great during my hike. The things you rent are due by 7PM so keep that in mind while you're out hiking. Overall, I received friendly customer care and was satisfied with my rental. read more

I walked in around 2:30pm seeking advice on taking a hike up the narrows. Everyone was friendly and extremely helpful. I was told by one of the girls that it would be better to return in the morning so we could enjoy the entire day without worry about time. We had the option of driving to another place the next morning. But how could I? After being treated so nice and given great advice. I had no option but to return and rent out gear from Zion Adventures. The next day was just like the previous. Everyone was friendly and answered all of our dumb questions (rookie hikers). We rented 4 sets of boots, neoprene booties and waking sticks. The best $100 bucks I've ever spent. We couldn't have gone as far up the narrows without the gear. People without boots were struggling which probably cut into their experience. Great place! read more

ADVENTURE TOURS: I was unsure about whether to book the half day canyoneering adventure tour, but I was incredibly glad that I did because it was by far my favorite activity that I did while I was visiting. My boyfriend and I met up with Isaac (who is awesome!) bright and early and set out for the canyon at 7:30AM, when the weather was still perfect. He walked us through how to rappel off of a 40 foot drop, and made us feel safe and comfortable throughout the entire process. He was incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and had a great sense of humor. You could tell that he has had extensive outdoors experience. He was great at communicating, and improvising things to do based off of the conditions at the canyons (i.e. the number of groups who had shown up). During the 3 hour class, you learn the basics of how to rappel and strap yourself into your own harness. You also learn some downslope climbing skills. You encounter many fun obstacles throughout the 3 hours. The 3 hour course was a fantastic option to choose if you have never done canyoneering before and want to see how you like it. My boyfriend and I are definitely going to go back to Utah in the future and try a more technical 1 day course with Z.A.C. Also, I can't stress how great Isaac was! He took excellent pictures of my boyfriend and I throughout our class and gave us a USB flashdrive with all the photographs he took at the end of the class. I totally didn't expect that, so it was a very pleasant surprise. read more

My wife and I took the one-day basic canyoneering course. We Loved It!!!! Rob was our instructor and was fabulous. Like most people doing this course, we were planning on canyoneering by ourselves the following day and wanted to cover the basics. We had little experience, but coming out of the program and completing the solo canyon the next day, I can tell you we felt completely prepared and comfortable with everything. The staff was friendly and helpful. The rental process was easy and the return was simple. Oh yeah, we ran into an instructor from another adventure company while out to dinner, he told us that Zion Adventure Company is the only company in town that pays for it's instructors to get further training in canyoneering. I wold never go to this store again! We had a trip planned to hike the narrows and decided to rent boots and hiking sticks from this company. I went in the day before to confirm my reservation and was told to come back the next morning at 7:30. When we came back the next morning I was told "sorry we open at 8:00" I let the associate know that I had a reservation and was told to come back at that time, but he kept repeating the same thing. My husband asked another co-worker sitting at a counter eating cereal for help and she told him she was too busy getting the store ready. There were many other people being helped, but they were part of their adventure trips. Finally at 7:55 they let us in and when I complained they said they were trying to help us out by 5 minutes. As other families filtered in as well. Horrible company! And to top it off the boots I received were wet. Awful! read more

Spent a lot of money for what we got and was not impressed. Checking the gear out..... My family of four showed up about 715 the day before our narrows hike to rent the gear. The person that helped us was very friendly. That person got cut off by a female worker who seemed irritated we were there when they were about to close. She hurried the process and didn't allow us to continue to work with the person we liked. My kids and wife then begun to try on their dry suits and pant. She asked us not to try them on as it would take too much time and was not necessary as it's pretty much one size fits all. Well..... everything fit great except my wife's dry pants. My wife is skinny but has relatively thick ankles. The dry suit lasted about an hour til the pain became unbearable and she had to take them off. She had a huge swollen ring around one of her ankles that looked very painful. Now I get to carry her dry pants through the narrows and my wife is freezing! The rest of the gear worked great. Taking the stuff back. The lady that checked me in was friendly but clueless to customer service. Told her about the issue with my wife and suggested rental equipment be tried on first. She laughed uncomfortably while continuing to check us in. She then found a small (less then 1/8 inch) chunk missing from one of the gaskets on the dry suits. "That's going to be a 25 dollar replacement fee!" I asked how she knows I damaged the equipment. She told me all the gear is thoroughly inspected on each return. I almost thought she was joking given that we weren't allowed to try on all the equipment or weren't even inspected prior to giving it to us. This was even after equipment was not even used due to lack of fit....... a reasonable business would have offered a discount at this point not asked for more money! I said there was not a chance I was going to pay the 25 dollar fee. She said, "Ok, Have a nice day." That was it. Was expecting more but I guess they know they can't collect the fee since the renter wasn't given the opportunity to inspect it. I wonder how many people they nickel and dime with this. If you do the Narrows hike, you really should rent the walking stick, neoprene socks, and heavy duty water shoes. For $30, its totally worth it. I almost didn't get them, I have some Salomon water shoes, but decided to rent here and I'm glad I did. The staff is awesome, very helpful, they help you pick and fit into the right equipment and play a helpful video before you go to make sure you know what you're getting into. The shuttle driver, Steve, was cool - getting us quickly to the trail head before a storm threatened to get us stuck on the dirt road. I would definitely go with these guys again. One minor inconvenience you'll have to get over is wearing wet shoes rented from someone the day before. They were pretty damn smelly putting on and taking off, but once in the water, you don't notice the stench. Especially with the sweet views of the canyon. read more

We arranged for a 9:30am shuttle departure to be dropped off at Chamberlain's Ranch to backpack the Narrows from the top down. We missed our departure time (as did a few other people) due to an egregious wait time at the NPS office to get our permit (90 minutes) and the Zion Adventure Company arranged for a shuttle to make an additional trip up river to drop us off. Thanks to Silvan for making the drive for us. Highly recommend renting the boots and walking stick. The boots drain water well and stick to wet rocks. The stick is better than your trekking poles for bracing against rocks and less expensive if you break it. Friendly PSA: The gear is the quality you would expect from any outfitter at any outdoor tourist destination--some of it is new, some is used, some is more heavily used. Be your own advocate and if it doesn't fit right then ask for something else. If it's your first time in the outdoors, well, hiking miles in a river over wet rocks in the heat probably shouldn't be your first foray into the outdoors. read more
