I called them but they kept hanging up, to try tell them it was unsafe and I had to leave it there and they needed to give me another car I asked for a refund for the car I did not receive and did not use. they said if I did not drive the car back to the original spot that they would charge me $1k for a towing fee and They wouldn't refund me for the car I never received They were argumentative, made me Feel like it was my fault, shouting at me down the phone, talking over me while I was trying to explain to them my situation. There are never any cars available on demand!! Rather than paying a monthly service for NO SERVICE, I can use Enterprise, AVIS or any other car rental service where I can literally get a car on demand when needed. I would rate 0 stars if I could. On the phone so long with customer service over 90% of the time. While apologetic, they do hardly a thing to resolve the matter, or take forever to resolve it. They are more interested in making and saving money than they are to increase quality of customer service. They make their next customers responsible for the vehicle's condition of the last customer, as if that's not a potential recipe for disaster and potentially long process for resolution. Zipcar should be more responsible and have a better system to verify, which would mean Zipcar would have to spend more money and time ($) to do their own job and not put so much on the customer. I've tried to book Zipcar twice in NYC and have had terrible experiences both times. The first time my Zip Card wasn't able to open to vehicle. I called and waited on hold for a while and ultimately had to cancel my trip (a full day trip to a hike). The second time I had the same issue, but was able to resolve it after 30 minutes on the phone with customer support. The car worked perfectly for the trip, but I was charged a $100 late fee for returning the car 13 minutes late, even though my departure was delayed for technical issues. I even tried to extend my trip for ~$13 but the mobile app malfunctioned. I have called customer support several more times than I would like trying to contest the late fee. Still no updates. Long story short, Zipcar is a pretty awful service that hasn't innovated with the times. It is overpriced relative to Hertz, charges you an annual fee, and wastes your time. Reserved a zip car to take my family Apple picking. When I arrived at the cars location, it was in a subterranean garage I couldn't access without calling someone, then I get down to the car and it won't unlock. The attendant who walked me down said this happens every time. I call customer support and 10 minutes later get a call back where the person spends another 5 minutes verifying my info. He says they will unlock the car remotely. This is 40 minutes after my reservation started btw. The car still doesn't unlock. The agent tells me the closest car to me is not close at all and says he will cancel my reservation. No offer of a credit, nothing to make up for my family's day being ruined. 10 minutes later I get an email from Zipcar saying they charged me the full amount for my 6 hour reservation!! Just stood outside in the cold rain waiting on hold with zipcar for half an hour because our car wasn't where it was supposed to be. Zipcar is supposed to be convenient but about half the time there is an issue like this. Zipcar didn't even bother telling us the car was parked in an alternate location, costing us time and stress. In past trips they've cancelled our car at the last minute causing us to have to take a cab to reach the car or just use cancel altogether and use a normal rental agency. I don't ask for a lot in a rental / share car service. Convenient access, and clean/safe cars at a reasonable price. Zipcar seemed like a nice alternative to traditional rental services - but that was my big mistake in thinking that. Today, my life was endangered due to Zipcar's poorly maintained car - I drove an hour away from the city, then parked for 3 hrs - only to find one of the tires completely flat- like there is not an ounce of air flat. Can you imagine if I was on the road with this? This is on top of constant engine oil change needed, various fluid is running low, and just Service Required lights blinking. I waited 3/5-4 hours for the road assistance, and as a courtesy, Zipcar extended the hours by 2 hours - how generous. I asked how we are supposed to keep warm in 39-40 deg weather - they initially just shrugged, and kept repeating there is nothing they can do - then finally, a different rep told me to keep the engine running but did not know whether the battery will crap out - like last year in an empty parking lot. According to the repair service provider, this is a common episode with zip - full of surprises that makes people want to abandon the crap cars on the road It feels like Avis doesn't want to keep Zipcar around much, the way the service is run these days - by the way, the garage keepers in the village haven't seen you for months - and even before the pandemic, you guys didn't come very often to maintain the cars. I was a longtime member but cancelled my membership recently because the condition of the cars and quality of customer service has really deteriorated. On two recent trips the car had to be towed. On one of those, I was 200 miles from home and they refused to reimburse me for the train tickets I had to buy to get home. When I called about this all I got were delay tactics ("your case is being reviewed"). It should have been an easy decision. After a few weeks of getting the runaround, I gave up and quit. We booked a car for a quick birthday road trip. When we opened the car doors, a huge stench of body odor and ashes nearly took us out. Looking inside, there were ashes EVERYWHERE, with a couple of roaches in the arm handle. No gas in the tank, no fuel card, but we were determined to go on our trip since they said that another car is about an hour away and that we couldn't take this car to go there. It's a good thing that we didn't drive any further because the tire pressure sign was also on and the tire shop told us the front left tire was about to BLOW OUT. To compensate for this, they offered a $30 refund on a $270 day rental. It's the biggest rip off with the worst customer experience. Do not support this company. Definitely believe the bad reviews. Sometimes Zipcar goes as planned and is super convenient. Other times you get there and 1) the car isn't there at all 2) the car is there but offline meaning it can't be used and they have no alternatives or 3) the car is online but your app and/or zipcard aren't working so you can't get into the car. I once had to Uber 2 hours for an event because my Zipcar was offline. Customer service offered nothing. Recently I rented a car I'd used before. It was a rare car that actually connects to Android via Bluetooth. They waited until after the 24h cancellation window to change my car not once but twice. I got stuck paying $160 for a huge SUV (I rented a small sedan) that didn't connect to my phone. The new car was also more expensive than the original one I booked. Customer service offered $50, which barely accounted for them upcharging me after the cancellation window closed, nothing for the inconvenience (4 hours driving in silence!) Customer service then just stopped responding. They don't care about customers or quality service. They will charge you whether you got the right car or even a car at all. read more

Zipcar changed my pickup location to an unsafe underground parking lot & my car reservation from a roomy CRV to a Volkswagen Golf (aka a clown car) the day before I was scheduled to drive! I tried calling them to renew with my recently renewed ID but all they could tell me was my account was removed and to try to use a different email. Seems a little excessive to me. I was told they would book me at another location... I arrive at the new location, I can't access the car... Call support again... after another 20min, I get access to the car... I mention that I know there is a $50 fee for returning a car late, I'd like to request that $50 be passed on to me for my over 45min delay and was extremely late to my meeting... I'm told a manager will review and get back to me... They never do... Zipcar moved my reservation from a location I chose because it's 6 blocks away from me to a location over 30 blocks away. I didn't see the email notification (that was sent at 1AM) until I was walking out the door to pick up my car. I was over 30 minutes late to the race I rented the car to run. Had to pay $50 to change my race time. And to top it off, the new car was absolutely filthy with trash, cigarette ash, and CLOTHES left behind. The INSIDE of the windshield was so dirty, it was blurry to look out of. There was also no washer fluid. I've been a Zipcar member for many years now and have noticed a significant decline in vehicle quality. I just cancelled my membership after an equally disappointing customer service experience. Don't waste your money. The monthly fee is clearly not going to vehicle maintenance. Ever notice how there's no reviews on their website? There's a reason for that! I don't want to take a cab to a car. My last and final reservation was a car that was soaking g wet with beer spilled all over. When I finally got through to customer service, they told me there are no cars available to replace it & that I should take it to a car wash. Maybe to shut down Avis's & Budget's biggest competitor to car rental? My own experience is with Zipcar's customer service, which is basically a firewall to actually resolving any issues. You call the number; they can do nothing but read the website to you, they pass it on to an "expert," and then they ignore you. Want follow-up? You have to start over. I was finally able to get a zipcar after months of trying book a veichle. I made my reservation days in advance, with my desired veichle at the location closet to where I live (about 3 minute walking distance and right around the corner). Unfortunately, my zipcar resevation was unexpectedly changed (without my knowledge) the day before my reservation to a smaller downsized vehicle (Ford Edge to a Honda HR-V) and at a location further away from where I initially booked it. The money was refunded to my account and than charged again for the reservation that they made. I was never consulted about the modification that they made or the varies charges on my account. Also, I had to take an uber just to get the the new location. They didn't even offer to compensate me for the inconvenience that they caused. But all that wasn't even the worst part. The worst part was the state of the veichle once I got there. Immediately upon opening the car door, it wreaked of cigarette smoke. The seats were wet, soiled and stained. The car was also filthy, sticky, and filled with water and dirt. Also, my son noticed the condom left behind in the cup holder. Digusting! I called customer service to complain and they suggested that I use my resevation time to take the veichle to be cleaned and to provide them with a receipt so that they could reimburse me at a later time. Again, they still didn't even bother to offer me compensation. This experience was, by far, my worst. This company use to be decent. But now the customer service, availability of veichles, ZipCar locations, and type of veichles have fallen far below sub-standard. read more

However after one too many cancelations, 1 during Christmas time and i wasn't booked another car, another time I was placed in a car that required a subway right instead of a walk in my neighborhood and today with a car that was given to me on 162nd st and i live at 190th and Broadway! The phone service is horrible you end up with someone in another country with an accent you can't understand! Do yourself a favor DO NOT get an account from this car service! Find an alternative! I rented a car, which I confirmed could be unlocked by phone. I got to the pickup and was unable to unlock the car and zip car customer service was unable to send it a signal. Two customers also left - one for the car not being available and another for similar unlocking issues I spent 90 minutes on the phone with zip car finding me another car, which I told them my phone was international. I was constantly put on long holds on purpose, as no supervisor wants the liability of making an actual decision. Finally after being trekked to another location, and another 35 min on the call to unlock the car; I received an older car, with stains and cigarette smell. I decided to not take the car and now zip car after 60 minutes on hold tells me I should wait to see if a refund is approved. This is a joke.
