Thanksgiving was a fiasco at Zippys McCully, site of corporate headquarters. As approached there appeared to be lines at both end of restaurant and then accessed that I needed to find a parking space. Further down were people appearing to be giving out something. ( I had online ordered two weeks ahead and needed to choose time I was picking up my two plates.) A man ahead motioned me to move forward and when I did he looked up my name which was not there since I was not on list of a full turkey meal and now had to drive out of parking. Luckily found a space a block away and walked back. Why when there 5-6 people with whole meal order not by top to ask and direct to park or go forward for pickup. I stood in line that did not move until people in front decided to leave(lady in wheel chair was at entrance and never moved in). Realised that people were leaving that allowed me to move forward during a heavy downpour. After messaging on my phone 5 times that I was there, no one called me with my order so I left. On Nextdoor the same scenario happened to others. One incident when he got to counter they didnt have his order and showed his online receipt that had to be reordered and he had to wait outside. Yesterday was national Chili day, they sent out a coupon for chili rice bowl for $2.99, great deal yeah. Anyways we go I. The app and order the 5 max chili rice bowls around 530pm and we set the pickup time for 730pm, since we had a 6pm meeting at my Maryknoll school. Meeting eNds early and we head to McCully Zippys about 715pm, I get in there and it is packed, standing room only. Seriously if you know you're going to be busy have enough staff and food on hand to handle the demand. Suffice to say it took 45 minutes to finally get my food at 8pm, 30 min after I was scheduled to receive it. While waiting, they had run out of white rice and asked customers if they wanted brown rice or who was willing to switch to brown rice instead. Complete garbage. This place is dirty, and nasty. There is no way this place would pass inspections stateside. The bathroom looked like someone had not cleaned it ever! My food took 15 minutes for a salad, and then they didn't even put the chicken in it. Then they told me to dig through my salad and I might find it. Every time I visit Honolulu, I must stop here to pick up some chili and coconut Napple from the Napoleon's bakery that is located inside Zippy's. They used to pass out free coupons at the marathon expo (Hawaiian Convention Centre) but not anymore. This is the original Zippy's. They just reopened it after a few months of renovation. This time I had their fried noodles (yakisoba) because I saw someone sitting there eating it and it looked so good. The flavour of the noodles wasn't bad, but it was a little on the dry side. I also tried their loco moco too. The gravy was good, but I found the hamburger patty to be a little too firm for my liking. Nonetheless, I love coming here. So I went with my friend and her husband for a quick bit to eat at Zippy's! They said it was like Denny's here on the mainland! Actually, they lied...it may have been but, the food was better the the service was WWWWWWWWWWAYY better!! I like the place! The portion was decent and also, the menu had so many choices...not a good place if you can't make up your mind quickly! I had their chili because that is what they are known for! It was good! The service!! FAN-TASTIC! That place was the first real smiley face I saw when I landed in Hawaii the first day!! Everyone there is genuine and have a wonderful attitude!! I have to say it's American but with a Hawaiian twist of course. So you'll find American dishes but, you will also find food that the locals eat. It is a local eatery! I love it! I ordered take out and it was so easy. I placed the order online and 15 minutes later just drove by and didn't even had to get out my car. This is one of the cleanest, updated, and quaint Zippy's I've been to. When I first moved to Oahu I visited the Zippy's on Vineyard and came across a lady that had her belongings sprawled across three tables, and was screaming at the birds. OMG. The food is still good, but it hasn't changed. The only thing that's changed is the price. I came about 2 months ago and it was reasonably priced, but almost not worth the money. Now the price jumped up nearly a dollar from my last visit but the food quality has neither improved or went down. I'm very disgusted and disappointed on how much it costs (loco moco is now over $11, vs the $9-10 it was the last time) and the prices have been jumping so much in the last year. It's honestly not worth the price they now charge and the higher prices they'll charge in the future. Wait staff service has definitely gone down. Normally, they're very attentive, but today, our waitress was almost nowhere to be seen except when bringing out food and then taking orders. Then she disappeared. She didn't check to see about water for any customers until she was taking plates away and then asked. I asked for more water, which she gave as she handed the check, no asking if we wanted anything else. I was not pleased as I worked at Zippys several years ago and we were taught to be attentive and make sure customers were satisfied. Such a disappointment. Kids love spaghetti. That's why we came here. On multiple occasions. My brother's little rugrats feed on the stuff, and once they get enough of it, they blissfully pass out. Thankfully, there are more Zippy's around the island than there seem to be anything else, public restrooms, parking lots, palm trees, etc. So once the kiddos are doped up on Zippy's spaghetti we're good to go. For myself, I had a couple of things here. Loco moco. Hamburger steak. Both are essentially the same thing, 'cept one's got a couple eggs over it. Sure it's fast food, and though it's a little on the pricey side, they do a good job of filling you up. But again, it's still fast food. Would I recommend Zippy's? If you have kids in tow, I guess it's about as good a place as any. But say if I were visiting Hawaii with friends? Chances are, hell no. read more

Dear Zippys, I sincerely apologize for visiting you at ungodly hours while intoxicated off my mind when I was 21 years old. Yes, I know I was obnoxious and I must have thrown up on you more times than I can remember, but that was then and this is now. I've matured a lot since then and fortunately for you, I am no longer able to eat past 8pm for the fear of the food going straight to my thighs and hips instead of my breasts and booty. We ordered several plate lunches on the phone today. The female employee who helped us charged us for plates we did not even order, so we got more food than we ordered and paid more than we expected. Plus, when we got our orders, we realized that the food was not prepared the way that we requested. I grew up eating at Zippy's for decades and loved its food, but I no longer like this restaurant because the service is subpar, the portion sizes are small, and the prices are too high for what you get. read more

This location is a fantastic place because of their newly renovated restaurant and i was happy with the food that i got and i have good food here and thensome. Also this is the one of the locations that I don't get to go often as well as eating at a zippy's. I have to say that this location is a good place to eat because if you are hungry for anything at the late night hours then this is a good place for you late night owls, which is open 24 hrs 7 days a week. Also i enjoy the eating at the location because i had a good experience a while back when I ate there and I ate at the restaurant side and i am glad that I ate especially after having a late night outing and they know exactly what I wanted and I hope i can be able to get together and eat there soon read more

Zippy's McCully is the most nostalgic place for me when I think of my food experience growing up in Honolulu, Hawaii. My roots are held down deeply within 1/4 mile radius of Zippy's McCully. My grandfather was raised in McCully, the S King St and Pumehana/Algaroba area was his stomping grounds as a kid with Senator Daniel Inouye. My mother was raised in the McCully area and went to Washington Intermediate and McKinley high school. My grandmother (Issei, 1st generation) who married my grandfather (Nissei, 2nd generation) after meeting in Japan eventually moved back to Hawaii to raise my mom and uncle. Guess which area?? ... that's right, McCully. I lived in McCully 3 out of my 4 years of high school. And I have an aunt who works at Zippy's corporate headquarters, literally 65 steps from the restaurant I'm about to review. Sorry for my personal family history, but when I say this is the MOST NOSTALGIC food spot in Hawaii, I want you to understand where I'm coming from. If you are a 1st timer, so that you don't ever write a bad review of Zippy's for their food, you have to try their classics, starting with what they're best known for... their chilli. I'm sorry if you're vegan or vegetarian because their Original Zippy's Chilli recipe does contain meat. That's probably one of the reasons it's so dang delicious!! What I love about Zippy's as a company is they have not sold out!! They keep it local and from my sources I hear they plan to keep it only in Hawaii. My guess is the way they're able to never sell out is the fact that they sell over 115 tons of Zippy's Original Chill recipe through stores, retail markets and fundraising. This has to be one of Hawaii's top exports. You can find frozen Zippy's Chilli in stores in mainland cities with large Hawaii ties populations like Las Vegas, Seattle and Los Angeles metro area (specifically Gardena, CA). Back to the chilli... the taste is distinct, yet most people who describe it say "Man, what is that ingredient? I can't put a finger on it." Some say they put peanut putter in their recipe. I stopped trying to crack their secret and just eat it when I have the chance. It is yummy... plain, with rice, on a hotdog, over chicken and dozens of other ways I'm sure it has been served and eaten. If you are a fan of chilli dogs, this would be the ultimate chilli to use, your first bite you would think you've died and gone to chilli dog heaven. Other classics you cannot go wrong with: Fried chicken, Zip min with teri beef, Burrito and chilli over rice, chilli cheese fries, saimin and won ton min. Apple Napples (their famous apple turnovers) which you can purchase at their bakery called Napoleon Bakery, 4 steps left of their take out window. (by the way Napoleon is what I call the "can't go wrong bakery", it's not the best, but you can always count on their cakes and pies to be fresh and tasty when you're on the run and have to bring a dessert to a pot luck. Your dessert is always much appreciated.) If you're a tourist and don't do your research, you might think Zippy's McCully is just a take out fast food place, with tables to eat your take out. Hidden in the back of the establishment is their sit down casual dining restaurant. This is a great place to experience the Kama'aina (local to Hawaii) experience. Their servers are almost always friendly, even at 3-4am when they're getting the young, drunk and obnoxious 16-23 year old clientele who are demanding, as they are having their late late night craving before heading home. If you want a great experience in the restaurant, go there between the hours of 8 am and 10 pm. At 8 am you'll catch the regulars (old timer aunties and uncles) sipping on coffee and eating portuguese sausage, eggs and rice talking about their hanabata days (childhood days) and wearing their 1960's Aloha shirts and mu'umu'u (hawaiian print) dresses. PROS: OPEN 24/7, CHILLI AND APPLE NAPPLES, FAST FOOD OR SIT DOWN OPTION, FRIENDLY EMPLOYEES. CONS: PARKING LOT CAN GET CROWDED NIGHTS AND WEEKENDS, NOT THE CLEANEST BATHROOMS, LITTLE ON THE PRICEY SIDE FOR TAKE OUT HAWAIIAN STYLE FOOD. In closing my longest review to date, I highly recommend Zippy's McCully if you're in the Honolulu area, so at least you can say you visited an iconic and nostalgic food destination near and dear to the local people of Hawaii. This review is for Zippys as whole not just this location. Zippys should be called Rip-pys instead. The company has been identified as a local Dennys but really is just a typical bland food restaurant that uses its name to stay afloat with the older generation. You can go to numerous places with better food and identical prices.... Look at my burger.. It was 7.95...i can go to teddy's for a real burger at the same price. I think in its time long ago, Zippys was likely great, but it has over stayed it's welcome with prices creeping up every year. It's weird that take out cost the same, but are given less food when compared to dine in.... Hmmmm... Guess buy the time you get home you don't care. "Next Stop, Zippy's" is a great slogan, I always appreciated it. Although nothing witty or catchy, it's also not cheesy. Directive language is the best way to influence a decision, much like McDonald's "I'm Loving It" makes you subconsciously believe that you are saying it. In fact, I'm even seeing reviews here on yelp that mentions "first stop," "stopped at," and so forth. They had no clue when writing their reviews that these words have been engraved into our brains. So after a night of drinking, my friend asks. Where to next? Perhaps the word Next alone made me think of Zippy's. But who really knows, I'm not a psychologist. Anyway, we often have 3 Zippy's choices after drinking. Unofficially we call them Washington, Kapahulu, and Wisteria Zippy's. I am quite aware I date myself when I say Wisteria, so don't remind me. My favorite choice of the three is this one, the one by Washington Intermediate. The dine-in side has so much old charm. I'm no Zippy's historian, but I have a feeling that this is the original Zippy's. It feels like this is exactly how it looked when your parents ate here a generation ago. We always have the same late night waitress. I love her and don't even know her name, but I can guarantee you that she'll be your waitress on any night after midnight. She handles us drunks very well, even perhaps finds us amusing. One time we were giving her safe sex advice and she just stood there in either amusement or awe. Mind you. I've had bad experiences at other Zippy's, even being sober, where a waitress literally tossed things on to the table and bitched and moaned the whole shift. I don't care if your boyfriend broke up with you, your dog died, or whatever. Either go home or be a professional and just bring out my sandwich, got it? The food never changes. Classic unique comfort foods that you can't really get anywhere else. Chili Cheese Fries, Spaghetti, Korean Style Fried Chicken, and Portuguese Bean Soup are amongst my favorites. Back to my point. What the hell happened to Zippy's?!!!! I brought some guests from the mainland to Moiliili location takeout. The chili burrito lookd like it was stepped on before it was fried, the side order of garlic bread was a 2" circular cut of bread, & the chicken was the size of a pidgeon!!! Wow! Cant believe how low Zippys has fallen! They were always a bit more expensive but u could always be sure of what you were getting. Apparantly, no longer. Auwe! Very very sad and very embarassing for me bringing my guest who heard of Zippys from friends. Im very disappointed, embarassed, & down rite pissed off! This always seem to be our first stop upon arriving in Hawaii. Why? I dunno... Guess because there is a wide variety of choices, it's Plate lunch, and it's quick!!! This time around I ordered the Beef curry mini-pac (half size) $5.50 the beef was stewed in yellow curry with potatoes and carrots then served alongside steam rice. For a fast food place it was what I expected... A bit chewy and grissly, but that's ok,I was hungry and I ate it!! Next visit, I had the Hawaiian plate ($10) which consisted of lau-lau (taro leaves,pork,salt fish, wrapped in ti leaves), kalua pork, and white rice. This plate was massive and delicious. Everyone agrees this is one of zippy's better locations. Service is super-fast and there are no stupid chairs(booths only). Try the oxtail soup... but be aware they put peanuts in the bottom of the stuff!! The oxtail here has sooo much meat, as well as a couple other ingredients I wish I could remember. Aaaahhhh McCully Zips... This place is in the hall of fame of my HS / College years. I can't count the number of times I've sat on that hard ass bench waiting anxiously for my number to be called. Its where I had my first Orange Dream. Basically an Orange Bang Milkshake it was undoubtedly concocted by some creative stoner dreaming of ultimate refreshment. I think Zippys has actually gotten a lot better over the years. I think they have their portions right and quality is good for what you pay. I just wish that Portuguese Sausage Omelet Sandwiches were available 24/7. Those little guys are the best snack ever! read more

Another place that was done renovating on my last visit and the dining area seemed smaller than I remembered? I forgot how thick the menu was too! Menu where condiments are, menu in front of you, specials of the day, oh too much confusion for my appetite! Remember the bigger the party, there is a possibility of sitting in side by side booths or waiting extra... just sayin'. My mom always overorders and can pack away the food like no tomorrow. No more room on the table, oh well! chili nachos, fried chicken, chicken katsu, hamburger steak, korean fried chicken, no complaints! Wow. I haven't bern to Zippys in a while. This Zippys was a hangout of mine during high school and my early 20s. Now that my kids are past kindergarten, at least my older ones, they can appreciate the different foods, but zippy's is not on that list. It is probably because they still insist on ordering off the awful keiki menu. Have you tried the pizza? Yes, Zippys has pizza, in the form of an awful, frost bitten, crumbly, doughy disc with sloppy sauce and miniature pepperoni slices. Terrible. DON"T ORDER THE PIZZA. This zippys is the one by the new 7-11/76. Overall, homey and comfy and definitely cleaner than the one next to Washington intermediate. What is Zippy's? To me, it's our very first and last spot to visit before heading back home to Northern Cali. It's our version of Denny's/Mel's Diner but better with local favorites. Some favorites include: Zip/Surf Pac (the spam made the deal. Where can I find spam at a diner in Cali?- NOWHERE.), spaghetti with fried chicken, chili dog with rice, chili with rice, chili itself, anything else chili, and maybe a side of Lilikoi drink. I love all Zippy's but this by far would have to be my favorite Zippy's that we've visited. There's a dine in side AND a takeout side where you can actually just order, grab a tray and dine there at one of their tables. We opted for the takeout side because when we visited, the dine in side was very busy. This Zippy's is different from many other ones because this location appears newer and cleaner. if you like L&L, you will love Zippy's. fast (Hawaiian) food for the locals but we stubled on it as I got hungry and didnt want to be paying big money in Waikiki for food. you can get your breakfast w/ the awesome portuguese sausage. or if you want, try these saimin (noodle soup) - with or without wonton. this location has a japanese food section where you can get sushi rolls, spam, chicken katsu and shrimp musubi with noodle dishes and bowls. there's also a bakery area where you can get your donuts and malasadas to cake and ice coffee. they did have lots other items on the menu but we didnt have time to try it all. this restaurant will satisfy your tastebuds and also your pocket. read more
