We ordered a back-up plate lunch with the smoked ham steaks that we barely touched, because we were so full. Most prices are under $30, and they have a great breakfast menu as well. Our resident foodie noticed that Ray's had liver, bacon and onions on the menu today so he went and picked up lunch for us. I'm kind of skeptical about ordering grilled pork chops because I had some bad experiences with it being too hard or too chewy like I'm eating gum. But Rays one was prefect I was really surprised the only thing was the mushrooms was a little salty but other than that everything on my plate was yummy. Definitely plan on coming back here to try other food on the menu. Amazing Food at a Hidden Gem! I was in Hawaii for my birthday and came across Ray's Cafe on Yelp -- the reviews were glowing, so my wife and I decided to check it out. We grabbed an Uber from the Hilton Hawaiian Village (it's too far to walk) and headed over. The hotel front desk guy even confirmed what I'd read: Uncle Ray is known for his Prime Rib, and the rib-eye and fried chicken are also must-tries. When we arrived, it was definitely a hole-in-the-wall spot, maybe 18 seats inside, but don't let that fool you. This place is all about incredible food and hospitality. I ordered the Prime Rib ($27.75), and it was cooked to perfection -- tender, flavorful, and the crust was absolutely delicious. The cut was about 1-2 inches thick and came with two scoops of rice and a choice of mac salad or green salad (I went with the mac salad). The best part? When I finished my rice, Uncle Ray himself asked if I wanted more! Who does that anymore? He truly wants to make sure you leave full and happy. My wife went big and ordered the Rib-Eye and Lobster Tail combo ($56.75). What she got was incredible: a perfectly cooked rib-eye (medium, just as she likes it) and not one, but two large lobster tails, cooked to perfection and served with melted butter and lemon. Sunday lunch hunger. Husband was craving Prime Rib. Called around a couple places near Waipahu... sold out or prices are high. Drove all the way to Kalihi for Ray's Cafe... open every day and they always have prime rib. Found street parking and modest Cafe was filled with diners and lots of take-out. Lots of regulars. Ordered their prime rib and opakapaka (another diner recommended the pork chop for next time). Our meals included a small salad. Food came out timely and was delicious... everything cooked perfectly. The only thing I thought needed some help was the tartar sauce to butterfish ratio maybe having a little bit more would have been great but all in all it was a good experience. We went to Ray's Cafe as the Beef Liver with onions was finally available. We called to place our order for pickup. Beef Liver, and Prime Rib, requested rare, with Mac Salad. It is a quaint little restaurant with no parking and only accept cash. I had the pleasure to talk to a patron and we had a nice conversation as I was waiting for my orders. Finally, the staff handed me the prime rib and said my bill ($27.00). I know it should be more than that as I also ordered the beef liver which I followed-up, and only then did they start making it. They forgot. No big deal, I went back to talking to the nice lady. Finally, the beef liver was ready and paid the bill. However, I came home to see a close to well-done prime rib which I ordered as rare. Also, they gave us salad for the prime rib when I ordered mac salad, doesn't help that the dressing was so watery and bland. They also didn't give us a horseradish sauce which usually comes with the prime rib along with the au jus! I know I should've checked, but considering I waited so long and was trying to make it to our car quickly as we parked at Nanding's Bakery and didn't want to get ticketed, checking slipped my mind. My fault. The beef liver, on the other hand, was good. I love liver and was satisfied with it. Just a little nervy, but I figured it's normal. My bf who ordered the prime rib was so done with all the mishaps whenever we go to Ray's Cafe. Missing items, wrong orders, prime rib not cooked the way we ordered. I would still love to be back when they have the beef liver, but I hope they step-up with their services. Definitely have to work with the accuracy of order taking, and double-checking the orders being given to the customers. I know I should also be responsible in doing that, but before the responsibility gets passed on to the customer, the business should be doing it in the first place. They have good food every day with good prices and nice portions, but where they beat all the restaurants on the island is their weekly specials, specifically their Alaskan Crab Legs & Prime Rib. For $67.50, you can get 1 lb of sweet beautiful Alaskan Crab Legs with dipping butter and a thick slab of medium rare juicy prime rib. OMG it was sooooo delicious! The crab was sweet, meaty and delicious, the prime rib was thick, tender and flavorful especially with the au jus. It was so much food I had to take most of the meat home. It was awesome!! If you drive here, you will have to "hunt" for parking on the side streets as there is Very limited metered parking on King Street. But despite the limited parking and limited seating (~7 tables) it's totally worth it. Based on a friend's recommendation, my nephew and I visited Ray's, a small, out of the norm, literally "hole in the wall" in Kalihi (yes, Kalihi) and it's a place where the food "broke da mouth" (in other words, it's really good). Do NOT expect a fine dining experience, it's more of a fine culinary culinary experience as the ambiance is very basic, but it adds to the experience. As others recommended, as did my friend, we ordered the prime rib, butter fish (black cod), and shrimp. All were great choices - big portions, great flavor, and very affordable, and best of all? Ray (the owner) and his customers - awesome "locals" who made us feel welcomed. Depending upon the time of day, Ray is sitting down, "talking story" with his customers. Check out the pictures on the wall and you will see some of the luminaries that visited, to include the current Governor of Hawaii, The prime rib was tender and so tasty; the butter fish was a whole side, not just a small filet (note, it had bones, so take your time); and the shrimp, butterflied and deep-fried. Called in to place a pick up order and Ray said it would take about 20 minutes. This place is small and only has a few tables, and of course there's only a few people working so please have patience for the uncles and order ahead if you need it in a timely manner. The food did end up taking a little longer than 20 minutes but it was no problem for us. The owner Ray was very nice and made sure we were okay. We ordered the Prime Rib and the portion is huge. Ray's Cafe is a little hole in a wall that serves up great home cooking! There is no parking lot only street parking and the cafe has only 5 tables that can seat 2 to 4 customers. I had the smoked ham steak breakfast with 2 eggs, toast and rice, the smoked ham was huge. My wife had the mushrooms omelette. Which she loved it was full of mushrooms and it came with toast and rice. Prices are very reasonable most of the plates run about $10.00. Someone on the next table ordered a rack of lamb with asparagus the price was $30.00. He does have different kinds of steak meals and breakfast steak plates also, but compared elsewhere Rays prices are lower and his food is delicious.
