Little overdue of a review but here we go lol.. Diners has been a staple for my family & I , and I'm sure many other families on island for YEARS. Our family's go to was always Cheeseburger and yellow sauce with fries! As time and society evolved , so did Diners, since they became "Upscale" and added more things to their menu. I have tried their Grilled lobster plate more than once from their Upscale menu in the past and I think during that time it was $15? Not sure if it's still that price, but for that price it was a winner! Lobster + salad and rice ? What more can you ask for since that's basically a steal in today's economy. Anyway , I was in the area recently and decided on diners for dinner. I was really craving ahi katsu, unfortunately my go to spot was already closed since I decided on dinner a little after 8pm ish? So I thought .. well diners has ahi katsu supposedly .. why not give it a try. I wasn't expecting much since it was Diner's BUT needless to say.. their ahi katsu is DELICIOUS. Seasoned well and cooked to perfection! I love the sauce they drizzle on the katsu. I should've asked for extra sauce on the side had I known it was gonna be yummy! But that's something to keep note of on my next visit in the future. I definitely would order this plate again! And continue to adventure out on their menu lol. A tip to keep in mind : they do have signs posted by their windows to be patient when ordering because they do take a bit to make and give you your order since they are always short staffed. And there's normally alot of people waiting or ordering since lots come to this establishment right after work or in between work or just simply there for a bite to grab. So prepare to wait .. but sometimes you can be lucky where it doesn't take as long. It does truly depend on time and the day I guess. Also one last thing, my personal opinion , I think Diners is worth grabbing food from. Whether you're hungry , in the area or wanting to grind. Some people have mixed reviews or bad experiences but me personally , I always had a good outcome. Oh also before I forget their steak is delicious too (LOL) , never ordered it for myself but I shared some of it with one of my relatives who ordered their steak before. This morning stopped to have a quick breakfast at the old Diners in Kalihi . It's now called Upscale Hawaii . It's funny the new name it's the same old Diners . Maybe the menu change a little but same ordering counter limited tables with the cement seating like I remembered over 20years ago lol . I had their breakfast special not bad @ $9.95 2 eggs, rice, choice of meats , I decided on Vienna sausage and they gave 7 pieces very generous I've been to places they either gave between 4-5 . Service was like usual pretty slow the lady at the counter was getting the phone orders and the live customers orders mix up . So it took awhile with only 2 customers in front of me . First review of 2026, review way over due lol been here a bunch of times already. Upscale Hawaii, open 24-7, in the heart of kalihi, with the bomb ahi katsu and other kine local kine grindz??? No can go wrong wit that. My favorites from here is the Wingdings and ahi katsu. We come here every so often when we get off work late. Perfect, cuz not much places open late.. so u know what I mean... diners it is lol They are located next to Kapālama post office, right on king street, no can miss it. They have couple outdoor seating tables, but I would just take out and bring home to eat and pig out in the comfort of my own home lol If there's anything they could improve on would be customer service. The bunch of times I went was always different personality. Nice, and then just the norm, "how can I help you?".. maybe a little more enthusiasm lol who am i kidding, if I had to work overnight, I'd be grouchy AF or if I had to work PM periodt lol... no thanks. Arrived late and was so grateful to find a local food spot that was serving up the grinds. We got grilled ahi steak ($16.95) and fried poke ($8.50). I hadn't been to Upscale in a long time, it's not usually on my list of go-to spots when I'm back in Hawaii, but I figured I'd give it a shot on my last trip back. Let's just say, this place has always had a bit of a vibe. You know the kind of sketch factor where you might see a random questionable homeless about. My advice is to grab your food and go. The outdoor tables aren't exactly appealing, but parking has never been an issue, so there's that! Pro Tip - call your order in way ahead of time or order online. They're not winning any speed records here, and they're very upfront about it. there's literally a sign at the window that says, "We are not fast food." They need their time. My garlic salmon and ahi katsu roll took a solid half-hour and they were not busy at all. So plan accordingly. Now, the food? Totally worth the wait. The portions are huge, like it could feed two people huge and everything is cooked to perfection. The garlic salmon is a personal favorite, especially because they load it up with whole garlic cloves. They also make asparagus here so well. I also tried the ahi katsu roll for the first time. Loved the texture but it's a bit on the dry side, the sauce it comes with? Absolute game changer. Super tasty overall. My late evening ended up here but I can see how I can enjoy this place any time of day. I had to try the staple Loco Moco and it's as solid as any I've ever had. With a thick hamburger patty, egg and tasty gravy, there was so much flavor packed in every bite. Another superb highlight are the fried chicken wings. Crispy, juicy and not overly salted. There is plenty of parking and only outdoor table seating. I didn't wait long for my order s rest assured, your cravings can be curbed as efficiently and quickly as possible. I loved this place during my first trip to Oahu and now I'm back again so here I am. I ordered the garlic ribeye 12 oz plate. My steak was cooked perfectly mid rare. The portion sizes are also pretty solid. It kept me satisfied. The food came out pretty quick which I was surprised about considering how many people were in front of me. My bf and I went there around 8:15pm. There were no lines. We ordered 2 cheese burgers, onion rings, 1 chicken cuttlet and gravy, and a garlic salmon and asparagus. Once the food came out, we ate the cheese burger and onion rings right away. The onion rings weren't crispy, and it was smushed in the bag. The breading came off the onions easily. The cheese burger was more bread then meat. All we could taste is ketchup and bread. We rate both 1 out of 5. We were worried that the plates weren't going to be good since the basic cheese burger and onion rings weren't. Thank goodness the plate were actually decent. The chicken cuttlet and gravy was flavorful. It came with 2 piece of chicken, rice, mac salad, and gravy. There could have been more gravy. I hate when place only put gravy at the top. We need it at every layer; on top the rice before you put the chicken down, on top the first piece of chicken, and then all on the top. And the mac salad was mid. Now the garlic salmon with asparagus. It was a small piece of salmon on top of rice, and toss greens. The garlic salmon had flavor and the garlic butter seeped into the rice making it taste great. There was furikake on the rice, the asparagus was good, and the salad dressing tasted good. Only problem I had was the salmon was way too small for the price you're paying. I would have loved a bigger piece. Overall, I don't think we will be back. Maybe if we were in the area and its too late to get food from anywhere else. Came here this morning to grab something to eat. The beef stew sounded good so decided on that. Asked the tall, bald guy a simple question. "Does the beef stew come w/ Mac Salad?" I was met with rolling eyes and an attitude that said..."duh, you should know". I was gonna order more plates for my co-workers but after this encounter with this guy, I said forget it. I'm not gonna give my $ to a business that couldn't care less about me as a customer. They loss my business. Their name should be DOWN SCALE! Breakfast after fasting... When is the best time to come here...7 in da morning as I've never seen it so empty which was nice to have the parking of your choice and just walk up to order. After a morning blood test before work I was looking for a place to have breakfast and Upscale came to mind as it has been on my radar and which so many choices that made you second guess your intent of coming here in the first place as ordering a poke bowl almost came to mind lol! The Nana at the counter was very friendly and she had a nice smile when she told me that they ran out of eggs at 06:45 am!!! Oh well!!! Plenty of other menu items to choose from (I got the Kalua Pork/Lau Lau combo). The pictures of their garlic steak items look so good I need to come back again. This used to be Diners Drive Inn in my early teen memories and needs a refresh ASAP. However, it would then lose its character and its essence. So, just a little refresh would be good like the sidewalk and maybe a new coat of paint. Unfortunately, there was a local there who was smoking and loitering that made it uncomfortable, but, that's to be expected. There is no real solution for that at this time. Went pass one evening & decided to try their Roast Pork plate, remembering how good it was back in the day having moved to the mainland & now returning after 40 yrs. My wife ordered a chili dog on the bun, She Said the chili tasted good , by the whole dog was cold. Strike one! I liked that the Roast Pork was smothered in brown gravy which made the white rice so much better. The meat was to fatty! Strike two! Will not go back, better drive inns close by! So, I show up at a primarily local drive-in in Kalihi, at 2 o'clock in the morning. I'm just visiting, but I was stationed here in the past. I was cool with all the locals, and they were cool with me. That's the way it's supposed to be. Even at 2 o'clock in the morning, the place was packed. The menu was large, with both Asian and local favorites. I had the local plate, with a Laulau, Kalua pig, as well as Mac salad and rice. I ordered quickly, and even though the very nice lady told me my order could take up to 10 to 15 minutes, it was ready in only about five. The place does not have indoor dining, but it does have picnic tables on the outside, but they were all in use. So I took my food back to the Y where I was staying. It was a very large amount of food, once again, I tore into it before I could get a photo, but it was delicious. I loved the laulau, it was large, and the meat was so tender. The Kalua pig was also very tender, and it came with a sweet-and-sour sauce, which I put some on the pig, and some on the rice. Just an absolutely fantastic meal. The price was very reasonable. I didn't get to come back for this trip, but I will definitely be back on my next trip. Thank you. read more

Upscale is one of the late night spots where the food hits the spot. iykyk. The food still tastes great but the piece of ahi that I got in my plate wasn't as big as previous times. The ratio of rice to ahi was out of proportion. Too much rice, not enough ahi. But it could've been just my plate that night. I was also reminded that using credit card here will cost you an automatic fee added to the bill, so for something that cost 17$ might bring it up to 20$. Don't be surprised. Oh and as for the garlic, there were only two cloves. Usually there's like 4 or more. I understand times are tough, but can't make em too obvious. Check em out if you craving something good, and don't mind spending at least 20$ a plate. read more

Oh the memories. This used to be my go to late night spot when I used to love right up the road. Since moving away, haven't been back in ages. The menu has changed slightly with the addt "upscale" offerings. They still have that hand written board with all the typical local plate lunch offerings. The food won't BLOW you away, however good homey local food for a decent price. Prices have risen since my hey day, but in line with most late lunch spots. Today's order: pork adobo. Diners is the place I go when I am craving a cheeseburger and saimin at 0600, before work. Full menu including daily specials is available at 0600. Need to be sure to look at ALL the papers on the window as they may have added or removed an item. Very reasonable prices. Cheeseburger combo is $10. Burger, fries and a drink. The burger is not a thin piece of cardboard and the bag of thick fries is enormous. The order and expediting counters are kept clean by the cashiers. Ever since the new year for some reason they either changed their recipes or cook because it doesn't look as it good as it did last year or the years before. The steaks don't even look as appealing because of the new seasonings or not as cooked through. They don't use romaine lettuce like they did which was way better than they have now. The workers were friendly and patient. As few of them working on a late night, totally understandable it would be a while to get our order. I'd rather wait for my food to be fully cooked rather than quick and undercooked. I ordered myself a ny steak and eggs while the rest of my party ordered short ribs, Hawaiian combo, and chicken katsu. Prices were reasonable. Food is pretty decent. They were large portions. Definitely try this place if you're in the Kalihi area on King Street. I just suggest just going during the day time for safety reasons. Even during the day, I'm alert to my surroundings cause it's a just a counter you order from and wait on benches outside. There's enough parking to make an order, get it, and be on your way. My go to plate is the Garlic Ahi Steak with Asparagus for $14.99 and it never disappoints. The size of the ahi steak is kind of hit or miss sometimes though, but this time was a hit. It's seasoned perfectly and the touch of that garlic confit just makes it a winner. You won't find another garlic ahi dish like this at a plate lunch plate, and if you do please let me know! I bought a kalbi shortribs for dinner for $18.50 and it turned out great. This is a very cheap price considering that many other places charge $28 or more for their kalbi plate. The teriyaki sauce was so tasty and the meat quality was great, not too strong and chewy and I ended up eating to the last bite with nothing left.
