When the first CAD finally came back, it looked nothing like what my fiancé had asked for. Instead of admitting the mistake, they insisted his notes were wrong and theirs were right. Then, when he asked them to fix it, they wanted even more money before creating another CAD. It only got worse from there. They had told him the ring would be ready in time for the week he planned to propose, but by then they hadn't even sent the corrected CAD. He was trying so hard to keep everything a surprise, but eventually he had to ask me to look at the designs to make sure he wasn't crazy. Turns out he was right the whole time. By that point, he'd also gone about three weeks without hearing anything from Mark, so he decided to cut his losses and ask my dad for the name of his family jeweler instead. Then came the part that really crossed the line. After deciding not to move forward, Mariloff wouldn't leave him alone. They repeatedly called and texted him, and after he blocked them, they actually started messaging him on LinkedIn. The cherry on top? After I chose the setting, they took both the stone and the setting to the back workshop. About twenty minutes later, they brought the finished ring out to me. That's when something felt off. Immediately, I noticed the stone looked different. The princess cut was no longer perfectly square, and it appeared taller in height. It had lost its familiar sparkle. The bright brilliance from the top was gone. I was confused, but at that moment it didn't fully register, so I left the store. I couldn't imagine that something like that could have happened. But over the next few hours, I couldn't shake the feeling that it wasn't the same stone. I returned to the store and told them my concern. "No, it's a beautiful ring and stone," they said. "We had no problem mounting it." As I replayed the experience in my head, one detail stood out. During the mounting process, the jeweler in the back called over the front sales associate, the one who had helped me choose the setting. The two of them looked at something together and spoke quietly. Then the sales associate went to the front of the store to speak with an older man who seemed to be the owner. After a brief exchange, the associate returned to the workshop for another short conversation. The whole time, none of them made eye contact with me. Thinking back, I can't help but wonder. Did something happen? I was young, trusting, and inexperienced in jewelry shopping back then. I had no certificate for the stone, no proof. Only my word. And I was afraid of facing the truth and confronting them. He was honest and fair in quoting me for my set. He actually agreed with the diagnosis from the first store which made me feel he knew his stuff. He didn't tack on extra unnecessary prong repairs just to bump up the price. From our conversation, he told me he has been a bench jeweler since he was 25. Since he does his own work, he doesn't have to charge us extra to pay for the jeweler doing the work. He's not just an owner that doesn't touch the pieces, he does everything and is extremely skilled at his craft. His quotes are transparent and he explains why the cost is what he is charging. I initially went to WTC to repair my diamond ring and Dolores was kind enough to answer the phone and seemed to have good reviews online. When I walked into their store, it seemed to me that merchandise was outdated, cookies were stale, and the entire place seemed disorganized. With much hesitation, I decided to get my ring fixed with them. We discussed ring vs necklace option - but without notifying me, Dolores took apart the ring When asked multiple times about the price, I was given a range but never a set price. Online reviews said they were reasonable in price, but they quoted $600 to fix my ring, and ended up trying to charge me $680. Dolores lost my platinum band and refused to take responsibility. My platinum band was lost in their care, when I went to pick up the ring, their son Scott, who was watching the store told me that missing items happens rather frequently and that if not found maybe I can file with my insurance (this is illegal on both felony and fraud accounts) Dolores offered me about $50-150 to replace my platinum band (which I did not accept) I will end with what their son Scott English told me, "the children have been begging them to retire for years but they won't retire. It is not uncommon for jewelry and items to go missing in this store." Scott wrote a promissory note to me to restore me to whole with a platinum diamond band by agreed date (this never happened) - see below for signed written agreements Jewelry business has always been luxurious. Getting beautiful things to celebrate special occasions such as engagement, birthdays, etc. I have dealt with many jewelers but never ONE as scary and Jeffery and Dolores. There is also a lot of competition now with online and decreasing price of jewelry. Before buying any precious item, one should do proper research. However, in my case, I made a huge error in judgment with JD English and have paid in time and lost precious jewelry as a result. Go see for yourself and follow that gut feeling. Below is a response from Dolores about missing my ring in their care. She ignored completely what her son Scott had promised. And time linewise, I dropped the ring off end of May, went to pick up June 13, and they asked I give them until June 21 to find the ring in their disorganized store and as of today, June 24, zero resolution or responsibility or ownership from JD English: "1. We took the ring apart as I told you to see if the head would work as a necklace without flipping. 2. As the ring was so swoosh it was not even discussed about making it into anything else. 3. I have the price on the envelope as $630 not $680. I told Scott to charge you $600. I was hoping to be closer to $550 but my cost was more. 4. My jeweler found parts of the ring that had the stones in it but not the whole shank. I can return that portion I have and pay you the difference of the lost portion of the platinum shank. You did not give me the wedding band portion of your set, only the engagement ring. I am so sorry there was such a misunderstanding about what to do with the top portion of your ring. The cost of your new ring was much more than the cost of the lost portions of your platinum ring. I can return the portions I have and deduct the cost of the portions missing. Platinum is $975 an ounce as of today which works out to be $30.95 a gram pure. If your missing portions came to 5 grams, that would be $154.76. Plus giving you back the portions I do have.
