If Japanese was comfort food, this would be it. $17.50 for a three topping Bento box. It can't get any better than that. The place itself was great, you had an option to either dine in a table, the sushi bar, or outside dining. The staff was nothing great, where the servers constantly checked in on you, and even other servers were open to helping you if need be. They work as a unit and made everything faster. Literally, a hidden gem. This place was great for a happy hour sushi spot. Lots of variety in their menu, but simple enough to not be overwhelmed. The atmosphere is relaxing with enough lighting to see the beautiful decor. Most sushi places can be quite dim. Our server was so sweet and attentive but not overbearing whatsoever. First time visit with my husband, thanks to a Groupon. My husband ordered the spicy ramen bowl, I ordered the chirashi bowl, and we ordered a side of the spicy tuna roll and fried Brussels sprouts. For dessert we shared the vanilla parfait. All were amazing. We split everything, and we liked how the spicy ramen was actually spicy (some ramen places' spicy ramen isn't that spicy). Must be the Korean influence in the ownership (as I am Korean as well) but we liked how the spicy ramen had a kick. I particularly noticed all the different textures and flavors in the ramen as well - roasted corn, soaked seaweed pieces, the bean sprouts. Delish! Only $8.99 for a good size bowl too. You can choose to add a side roll of spicy tuna for only $3 if you get ramen. We liked how the spicy tuna roll had a lot of tuna in it. They didn't go skimpy on it. The chirashi bowl was an assortment of fish/sashimi over a bed of rice, and a side of sliced daikon. The bowl had plenty of fresh sushi in it. We loved how buttery the salmon seemed and how easy all the fish was to chew (it wasn't chewy and old like some places serve). Also the cold rice in the bottom of the bowl was very tasty too! We later asked the owner about it who said he has a special recipe for that rice and it takes 6 hours to prepare and cook! Wow. Once again, we were impressed by the freshness and quality of the sashimi! The Brussels sprouts had sliced hazelnut mixed in and both had been flash fried. Even if you didn't grow up liking Brussels sprouts, I challenge you to try theirs. (Lately I've been on a Brussels sprouts kick when I go out to eat) We learned that the place was recently taken over my new owners. We were able to talk to the chef/owner which was cool. He was able to explain how he has taken the restaurant up a notch since he took it over. He said he only orders high quality fish and is picky about where the fish is sourced from. Also, they have a fresh shrimp tank onsite where they take shrimp from daily to serve. It doesn't get any better than that!! For us, we liked our experience here. If you are looking fora sushi place that offers 50 diff style sushi rolls, this place might not be the place for you. But if you're looking for good quality fish, this is your place. Also, if you love wasabi, be sure to order some extra on the side ;-) And last but not least, the vanilla parfait is worth it if you have room! The vanilla ice cream comes out in a fat but short cylinder shape, with crushed pieces of hazelnut coating the ice cream. Different for me but tasty! But then again, I sometimes enjoy the combination of different textures in a dish. We would definitely come back here! Came here for dinner with a few girlfriends (party of 9) . It was my first time and I had a bit of a problem finding the spot. Talk about "hidden gem". I literally walked the entire block up and down Maryland Ave. trying to find the place, and even asked a mail-carrier, and she could not find it either! Our party ordered both garlic (YES!!) and plain edamame, and gyoza as appetizers. Promptly consumed! I liked the X-Boyfriend rice-free sushi roll (had a pretty yin-yang look to the roll- spicy tuna, plain tuna, wrapped in radish and topped with varying slices of sashimi. Also got the Omakase sashimi tray (twelve pieces for small) . Every piece was delicious. Others in the party opted for bento boxes (you can get two or three item combo's - that's quite a bit of food : includes rice, salad, miso soup, tempura and a few pieces of Cali-roll sushi. Sashimi and Poke salad also looked very good. Dessert was mochi ice cream bites ( the mochi balls were quartered), drizzled with chocolate syrup. New owner definitely made improvements so it will now be our go to spot for sushi in Glendale. Everything was delicious and the fish was very fresh. Service was great. The benefits of Groupon is that it allows for a cheaper opportunity to try somewhere new. This is where Groupon has brought me yesterday. It was great that there is free Sunday parking in a parking lot just down the block from where Zono is located, which is in The Exchange plaza. It wasn't that easy to find because the plaza was pretty desolate and the businesses were unseen from the outside. It wasn't until we walked into the building that we saw Zono sushi; the flashing neon signs helped as well as the bench with Ben Franklin sitting outside the restaurant. Inside was pretty desolate as well. We were only the second party inside during prime lunch hours. With our groupon, we ordered the 3-item bento box for $12 and Sushi Combo #3 which came with 5 pieces of nigiri sushi (salmon, tuna, shrimp, halibut, yellowtail) and a roll of your choice for $12, along with two small Kirins and a hot tea. Prices were pretty decent, but also pretty standard in terms of lunch at a Japanese restaurant so I wasn't too impressed. Quality of food was also pretty standard. Sushi was mediocre; the first nigiri piece I had was the yellowtail and it was a bit chewy, so it kind of turned me away from the rest of the sushi. Some other details that I noted about the food was the comp' edamame was dried out and starting to brown in color and the tempura sauce was salty and flavorless. The bill ended up to be $8 with the Groupon (which was $15 for $30). Given that I had to tip on the full amount, the total I paid for this meal including the price of the Groupon was $28, which for two plus beers isn't that bad. With that said, I'll probably be continuing to scope the Groupon market and finding other places to try. Time to move on. read more

Boy has it been a long time since I've been to Zono!! I remember coming to Zono back when I was in high school and loving it back then - as I've grown a tad older, I've broadened my sushi loving horizon - but hey, the place still isn't half bad. We came for lunch on a Sunday and were glad to see that it wasn't crowded at all. They have a variety of lunch special bento boxes where you can pick from one, two, or three item combos. Most of my family had the bento box with one item and it seemed like it was a really good amount of food. I believe the one item is 6.95, two at 9.95 and three 11.95. The hubs, sis, and I all ventured for some rolls. I got super excited when I saw that they had my favorite - spicy tuna on crispy rice - FAIL! Sad to say, the crispy rice was TOOO crispy. They still had the general concept, but it was by far the worst I've had of it so far. But hey, the other rolls were quite good. We had some albacore tataki, the tempura roll, and a baked salmon roll - all were definitely good. The service was pretty on point as well. There wasn't a time when I was wondering where the waitress was or when I was going thirsty. They did a good job at accommodating a large party of 8! What makes Zono sushi so special, to me at least, is that it is the only restaurant I have ever visited, to play the ENTIRE Backstreet Boys' Millennium album to set the mood. Granted, it was in the middle of the day, in the middle of the work-week, so this probably doesn't happen that often (although, it's happened to me on two separate occasions here, so I don't know for sure) but I gotta say, it was magical. I watched a group of girls -- or should I say women - (our generation is older now) - break out into full teenybopper-screamish-fan-girl-lip-synch-mode, and it was great. It takes a little effort to find Zono Sushi since you can't see it from the main strip on Brand, but it's worth it. The prices are more than reasonable, but they're even better during Lunch or Happy Hour. Good Japanese food. The best part? Generous portions compared to a lot of other comparable Japanese restaurants, such as Kabuki. [ A side of Shishito Peppers? More like a BOWLFUL.] Love their bento box combos. The teriyaki salmon is especially tasty. Perfectly charred on the edges - with all those crispy gooey bits -- and soft and flaky on the inside. The atmosphere is very relaxed and asian-influenced. It looks nice. I would take someone here on a date, for sure. Business lunch? Absolutely. I'm particularly happy about the cleanliness. Not so happy about the 1 stall for the bathroom (one for men, one for women) and having to wait awkwardly while waiters and waitresses scurry by from the kitchen.... but I'm okay with it. I later learned that new management took over 5 month ago and they are trying to build better reputation. The food was great- the portion was heavy, and they were generous with using ingredients. RUINED Valentine's Day Dinner, Horrible Staff, Cold Food and Cold ramen! Waste of $50! If I could give them a zero, I would! Don't waste your time here. Large portions, but tasteless food and horribly rude waitstaff. Ambiance is nice. Backstory: my husband and I have both been a bit sick (cough and sore throat) and wanted some warm ramen to alleviate those symptoms. It was Valentine's Day night, so we called ahead to see if they would accommodate us to be seated at 9pm when they closed at 9:30. They said yes, so we arrived exactly at 9. The older Asian woman who greeted us was nice, but there was a young Asian man with glasses who was horribly rude and unaccommodating. We were seated at a table in-between the front door and the side-patio entrance. My husband ordered immediately and while we waited, the young Asian man with glasses started cleaning up the outside patio tables, coming in and out through the patio door, leaving us to freeze. He did this at least 6 times, including after I complained! Outside was 46 degrees. In the meantime, they had brought our ramen and beef teriyaki out. Our ramen was cold, our beef teriyaki also cold and I was freezing. We asked to move tables, and the young man said " Well, we have to clean outside too." The older woman finally let us move, but Valentine's Day was ruined and our tasteless food was made even worse by the fact that it was cold. The young Asian waiter proceeded to then clean the surrounding tables around us with chemical cleaning spray while we were eating. This was prior to them closing. DO NOT give this terrible establishment your money. I don't usually write reviews unless the restaurant is amazing or absolutely terrible. This place is terrible and I will never return here.
