As I close in on 100 reviews on Yelp, I've been trying to think of what place is going to have that honor. This review will make 97. So a thing I've thought about the place itself is that this is one of those places I walked by more times than I can count, but I have never actually set foot in here. Honestly, when I was in my 20's I always thought this place was like one or two steps at most from being evicted from business, partly because it was always closed whenever I would pass by it. But I have wanted to try this place for years, and I didn't mind that how I did it was by ordering on UberEats. So that was exactly what I did today. Thankfully, I had a promo on UberEats I was using where I could get a certain percentage off if I'd spent $25, and paired with my UberOne membership, I saved $11.27 on this order, roughly a quarter of what it would have cost me otherwise. I went with the Pork BBQ Meal Special, the Halo-Halo, and then the Turon was a closing thought that I ended up including in my order. So by the time I got to try the Halo-Halo it had already partly melted, so I had to treat it as half a dessert and half a drink. It is still easily one of the most interesting and curious thing I've eaten yet. It's like an ice cream parfait with some ube, a mochi cakelike thing next to that ube, and you can see all sorts of nuts and berries on the bottom. It's a fun and dare I say delicious treat, and I would have liked to have that fresh one day. Next, let's talk about the Turons. Honestly, these were also interesting and curious things to eat. Think a deep-fried banana with a honey glaze on top and that's what you get. It's a nice combination of crispy, tart, and sweet. The tartness does remind me of the plantain used to make the canoa appetizers at nearby Costa Vino, but it works much better on these Turons. The sweetness helps keep the acidity from being overpowering here, and the crunch and honey compliment each other as well. Finally, let's get to the main course here. What this is is a pork kebab on a skewer, served with rice, two slices of cucumber, half a slice of tomato, and a vinegary liquid that I can't quite put my finger on what it could be. The pork itself is juicy and flavorful, and the barbecue sauce is coated in a perfect ratio that nothing overpowers the other. Both get their chance to shine here. The rice was good, and while I probably could have done without the tomato, I did appreciate the cucumber. The liquid I think could be used as an accompaniment to other dishes too, but I wouldn't eat it on its own. Overall, I'm glad I did this. Just from the Halo-Halo and Turons alone, I had already begun to feel my newfound appreciation on Filipino food rise up. And after my second time having ube, I think I gotta see more ube things in my life. read more

If you like Philippine food, I believe this is the best iteration in CT. In New York you go to Woodside Queens 69th st on the 7 train for it. Ha. Yes I like the cuisine. The service is good, it's akin to grandmas serving you and making sure you eat until you cannot eat anymore. The ambiance is good; different places in the Philippines. CA Pinay visiting my bro bestie who just moved to Providence. After spending a day in NY and making our car ride back to RI, we saw this place was recommended on a few sites. This place did not disappoint our palate! The bangus sisig was flavorful, pork adobo was homey, and the ginataang sitaw and kalabasa was generous with crispy pork belly on top (unexpected!). Although the palabok can't beat Tito Joli's palabok, it still does the trick. 100/10 recommend these dishes. Zul's Cafe and Grill was absolutely worth the pit stop. The space felt just like visiting Tita's house. I loved the fork and spoon decor and decorative plates adorning the walls. Will be back even if hours away from our stay. Went here because someone told me it was going viral on tiktok. I don't understand why. While the service was friendly they were very slow. We ordered the short ribs. I'm cannot stress enough how terrible they were. First of all they were the tiniest, fattiest short ribs I'd ever seen. They were sliced about 1/4 inch thick so each piece had a dime size piece of the toughest meat you can imagine that I couldn't even get off the lil sliver of bone. So salty our tongues burned. I don't know when I've had such poorly executed food to be honest. The poncet had no flavor and was dry. The only thing that was any good were a package of rolls. The lumpia were okay but honestly my daughter has made better following a recipe. We drove an hour to try this place. What supreme waste of time. We won't be going back. read more

I almost missed the turn into the driveway as I've never been here. It an unsuspecting house that's been made into a restaurant. There's no better way than eating Filipino food family style! I couldn't resist going to the front and taking a photo. I'll do better next time. The entry is either from the front steps or the rear. The ordering counter was at the front of the house where they have bottled/canned beverages in a fridge plus other snack items around. I didn't expect them to carry bubble tea since that's not really a Filipino thing, though I can be mistaken. That's a plus though since who doesn't like bubble tea. The menu has a variety of selections that it was so hard to choose. I read "Inasal" on the menu and completely forgot about all the other dishes I wanted to try, such as sisig + fish and squid balls. I got the Lumpiang Shanghai. Don't let the number (12) fool you as these usually are minis and really are an appetizer. It comes with a sweet and sour sauce. What I love most about lumpia is you can always have it without the sauce and it would still taste great. I also got the Pancit Bihon, Inihaw na Longganisa because its easier to eat and a favorite for my kids. If dining in, they also have seating upstairs for groups of 4 or more. There are two rooms where you can sit where you like. I didn't want to worry about my kids staining the nice comfy chairs in the other room so we sat in Crisostomo Ibarra's Room where they had a Mancala set, also called Sungka in Philippines. I explained the rules and had to look up some of it to my daughter and friend. They played one round until the food was brought to us. The food was presented well with garnishes that will compliment each dish. Chicharron on top of the Bihon plus a lemon since Kalamasi isn't common. Tomato with Longganisa to neutralize any saltiness if any. Garlic for the Inasal, that was new for me, still scrumptious though! Everything came in to go boxes reducing cleanup. It is common to have left over with Filipino food so it's acceptable for me that it's in those kind of containers. The restaurant is more of a takeout style anyways. The only thing I wish from this visit is that there was more of an accessible napkin station upstairs. Since I had children I couldn't simply leave them to get napkins downstairs. Then when we all finished, we cleaned up as best as we could and ordered more food to go. We had a great chat with the family running the business and I must say, it felt very homey. Wow! So great to find authentic Filipinio food. We have been to lots of Filipino restaurants especially in the tri state area and we think Zul is one of the best. My wife is Filipino so she knows! Lumpia was fantastic and not small like some of the restaurants are now doing. Chicken Inasal was very flavorful. Lapisilog was great. The fried pork egg rolls are perfect as appetizers, finger size very taste with the sweet sauce. Rob's place is the place to go for home made flippino food, their desert it to go for. Space is limited but doable, they carry snacks like peanuts and chips. Their pork dishes are the go to entrees. It's refreshing to have a filipino restaurant in Connecticut and it is a worthwhile 30 min drive for us. We ordered 16 trays total from Zul to be picked up at 10:30 (this is when they open) and they went above and beyond to make this large order happen. We ordered lumpiang shanghai, pancit canton, chicken bbq, pork bbq and pancit bihon. In addition we were expecting a few gluten free guests for our party. Zul doesn't normally offer gluten free versions of the above on their menu, but they experimented to come up with delicious versions of their chicken bbq, pork bbq and pancit bihon to accommodate us. Dipping sauces for the lumpia and bbq were also included. Everyone at the party enjoyed all the food-especially the chicken bbq. I'm particularly a fan of the pork bbq skewers. Would definitely recommend ordering from here for their catering needs. They are great to work with and the food is too. On our way back to NY from a quick weekend vacation in Newport, Rhode Island we have this sudden craving for Filipino food. Had to search up for a place along the corridor of I-95 and this is where we ended in the area of Norwalk, CT. We just order some dished (on the way and over the phone) and the time we arrived the food were almost ready. They have a decent parking space at the rear of this colonial residental house converted to commercial. The place don't have a proper sit down tables and chairs but the one by the porch/patio looks nice to hang out in warmer days perhaps. The food are good and authentic Filipino and possible some of the dishes are of regional recipe. Like they said, there are 7,100 islands in the Philippines and each region (or island) has its version of a specific dish. I recommend this place for you to try out you foodies out there if you want a different versions of Filipino dishes. read more

So when it was delivered, I tipped profusely. The food was fantastic! The lumpia, though soggy, was perfect. Lumpia should be eaten right away. Packing them up just destroys the crunchiness which is part of its charm. I ordered the pinakbet. It reminded me of family, Filipino comfort food. The eggplant, squash, okra and all the ingredients just melded into a most wonderful stew. I sorta forgot that as an additive, you have a little bagoong on the side. If you are not familiar my friends, it is an extremely salty concoction and used sparingly to "wake-up" the richness of the stew. However, staying in a hotel, I don't think housekeeping would appreciate it. I also ordered sago! The original bubble tea, in my mind. It reminded me of my childhood in the Philippines especially when it was unbearable hot and humid. My grandpa would flag down the Sago cart and treat us kids to the cold, refreshing beverage snack. It tasted the same, which made me happy! To summarize, the order was a wonderful tasty surprise. There was plenty of food and I was able to have some for lunch the next day. I was in heaven. The owner's niece, who was working as a cashier, was very friendly and helpful in answering our questions about the different entrees. First time trying filipino food, and we did NOT leave Zul disappointed. We weren't quite sure what to try first, but everyone was so kind and helpful. We tried the pork bbq, lumpiang, palabok, and pork belly adobo, and everything was so fresh and flavorful. The meat was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The desserts were delicious as well--I recommend the mango cake and taho for those with a sweet tooth. My friend wanted takeout from here. I checked the menu and felt kinda meh about it. We ended up ordering a lot of different dishes for our group of 5. The menu doesn't seem very extensive but as it turns out each item is uniquely different. Everything was excellent. Simple entrees but tons of flavor. The kids loved the bbq chicken. The mini egg rolls were a tad greasy but the filling was tasty. I really enjoyed the bbq pork and the beef tapsilog. We also got a halo halo to which was really cool looking. I'm not too familiar with Filipino food, but it has some similarities with Vietnamese cuisine with the salty, sweet, and sour components. My friend and I ordered the Lumpiang (comes with TWELVE pieces), BBQ pork meal, and Beef Tapa. Everything was so delicious and we ate everything! Well, that is except for the rice since they don't skimp on that. BBQ Pork Meal: 10/10 - amazing flavor, not dry, and such a great deal for the ~$9. Love that it comes with cucumber and tomato as well. Beef Tapa: 8/10 - very juicy and perfect with their runny fried egg. I liked the BBQ pork a little more just because the flavors are a little less basic. But this was still great. Lumpiang: 9/10 - very crispy and chewy! We came here on a recommendation. The first impression is the place is very clean and upscale. There was limited outdoor seating during during the COVID Pandemic. As an American who has been to a lot of Filipino Restaurants with my Filipina wife I noticed that they had a menu instead of Turo Turo (Point Point at what you want), but the menu only covered the basic common Filipino Dishes and it seemed limited. The reason why I'm giving three stars is because the staff was very friendly and was working hard giving the atmosphere a good vibe like being around family, but I have to take away a couple of stars because of the food. The portions were good for the prices but there was no flavor. I had ordered BBQ Chicken in a stick but they didn't have any. So I switched Grilled Chicken with rice but the chicken tasted just like grilled chicken with no sauce or salt and pepper. I'm use to having it marinated in Vinegar, Soy Sauce, Garlic and 7up almost like Adobo but this had no flavor at all. Even Banana Catsup or American BBQ sauce wiped on after would have been an improvement. I was surprised to find a Filipino restaurant in Norwalk but man am I delighted that there is one. Having visited the Philippines I was a bit familiar with their cuisines and Adobo is one that I attempt to cook myself too. After finding out that there is an actual authentic restaurant near me decided to give it a try. The place is in a small house right on main street. There is parking for about five or six cars in the back and the entrance is also available from the parking lot. Inside there is a small sitting aea with the menu displayed on the wall. Since I was in a hurry I asked the lady at the front desk for recommendations. Gladys is a charming lady, new her food and recommended I give "Chicken Inasal" a try, which is BBQ's chicken thigh's. I went with her suggestion and when it arrived I could just smell the great aroma coming from my to-go order, so rushed home to give it a try. I have to say it was one of the best BBQ's I have had. The chicken seems to have been so well marinated in ginger and garlic that it was moist and tender and the BBQ gave it the right smoky flavor. Their are some spices that I could not tell what they were, that seemed to be sprinkled on the chicken, but they added to the overall flavor. Tried this spot for the first time this past Sunday. Really nice looking inside and they have a wide array of Filipino menu items. We tried some bbq chicken, some fried pork belly, spring rolls, and a pork bun. The food was good but the kitchen was very disorganized. They took my to-go order and after waiting 10-15 minutes they had to ask me what I had ordered again because of ticket issue. Had to wait another 15 minutes before the food came out and during that time, a number of diners had returned to report that their orders had also been incorrect or incomplete. While the good ultimately was good, it was a bit pricey for what we got. read more

So happy to have found this place. We were driving home from NYC but didn't want to get stuck in traffic so we continued on to CT. The place is very welcoming and clean. It's mostly a takeout place but they have a couple of two seater tables. You can stay there but they will still give you a to go container and plastic spoons. I will get pictures next time but because we were super hungry we just started eating. We ordered: pinakbet-(it was cold) and I wish they served a small side of bagoong. The description said shrimp and pork but didn't see any shrimp. Lechon kawali -served with lechon sauce . It was good: the pakbet also had some lechon kawali Chicken BBQ- this reminded us of home: my 6 yo niece who doesn't normally eat Filipino food gave it a thumbs up. Halo-halo was also good. Would like basta de coco and less beans. The winning dish is the palAbok! Best we've ever had in the US!!!! We will definitely come back again to check out the grocery store upstairs and take pics.
