Chicken Pad Thai to go
Kristyn M.

Updating my review. This is now still during covid times. No dine in, just pick up, take out, delivery. I called in my order. Easy chicken pad tai. She said see you in about 30 min. This is a Tuesday right after they opened. I got there right when she told me to and waited about another 5 min or so. There were 2 other people waiting on food as well. I could hear them cooking in the back my tummy was a grumbling! As soon as I had it I rushed out so I could go stuff my face. I even started before I realized I had not taken my food photo yet. So good. The 3 in spice was just the right level for me. The food was plentiful and enough for 2 meals. Very good. I will be back.

My previous rating still stands. The updated review is for their papaya salad. If you're craving Thai papaya salad, this is not the place. They are plenty other options in DSM. Regardless, I still love this place.

The new and improved "fortune cookie"

Best pad thai I've ever had! All of the flavors married perfectly! In the past I've had pad thai that was too peanutty sweet and it ruined savory nature of the dish. This pad thai was the perfect blend of savory, spicy, peanutty, and sweet. I especially loved the fact that it came with a ton of fresh shredded carrots and cabbage to mix in. I ordered it with no additional spice and that's how I'll order it again, and again, and again. I also ordered the tom kha gai. It was fine. Not as creamy as I would have liked but heavy on the lemongrass so incredibly tart and fresh. It also included a ton of chicken, mushrooms, and cabbage. Score! Lastly, the yellow curry was a miss, unfortunately. But I'll definitely be back for the pad thai, YUM!!! Also...where have Thai Fortune Cookies been all my life?!?!?!?!?!

Kind of a hidden yummy spot! We had the lunch specials: main dish, soup, 1/2 size appetizers and drink. We both had hot and sour soup-- very spicy so I'll do a different soup next time. I had a crab Rangoon and he had 2 small pot stickers. All was fresh and tasty. We both had pad Thai with beef. He loved his and I wasn't impressed. I added soy sauce and it was better. We had 2 on the spicy list--go a 3 if you want to taste any kick. My Thai tea was good and pretty. The cream at the top was tasty. A nice place for lunch with attentive help.

The food here is delicious but the times I've been I am always frustrated by the service. The restaurant is not big and has a handful of booths, tables and 2 person booths. There's no sign to tell you to wait or be seated (wait) and there's usually only 1 server. We were only given 2 waters for our party of three. It took us at least 10 minutes to order and one of our dishes was wrong. The server never brought silverware so I had to go up front, wait a few minutes and then get silverware. I felt bad for a couple near us because they were there well before us and didn't have their order taken until after us. Overall, food is great but expect slow service due to 1 server.

Jungle "curry" aka flavorless broth.

My husband and I stopped by today to get to go lunch after our daughters surgery. We have been years ago and enjoyed the food throughly but due to moving/covid we have not been. Let me preface by saying my husband is Lao/Thai and if he gives a Thai restaurant glowing reviews and continues to go back...they know what they are doing and the food that is served is authentic. We will never go back and unfortunately will never recommend it to others. My husband got the jungle curry and it was....a soup... a TON of broth... a few pieces of pork and a couple veggies. My husband took two bites and the "curry" had seriously zero flavor. He poured it down the drain along with the Tom yum soup that was ONLY broth (which btw is not homemade... it was made with a pasta bought at the grocery) and 3 mushrooms. I got the red curry and it was ok. Definitely not the 6+ stars I ordered and the meat too was sparse. Rice was also clearly old and refrigerated and heated back up. Mushy and flavorless. $20 down the drain. Avoid this place if you enjoy flavor and know how authentic Thai dishes are supposed to taste. Pictured is the jungle "curry" more like a flavorless soup broth

Stepped out to ZuZap Thai Cuisine in Clive for lunch this past Monday. It sits just off of University Ave and 128th...kind of behind Granite City. The place is fairly small and the seating consists of two person booths, four person booths, and four and six person tables. I walked in at about 1145ish AM. I was greeted promptly. All the two person booths were taken so they seated me at a four person table which they pulled apart...effectively making it two two person tables with a small separation between them. I ordered the lunch special; an entree (choice of protein), 1/2 app, soup, and a drink. I ordered Tom Yum fried rice with pork (spice heat level at a four out of six), pork pot stickers, hot and sour soup (with pork), and hot tea. Today was strange. My server seemed to be be pretty social to everyone but me. Other than taking my order and dropping off my food I was pretty much ignored. I didn't really require anything so it was no big deal, but when you're by yourself in the middle of the restaurant you kind of notice a lot of what is going on around you. Maybe everyone else was regulars? I know I put deodorant on this morning. I was in jeans and a t-shirt...everyone else was in business casual or nicer. The place is pretty casual though...and it's not like I looked like a vagrant. It was just odd. The manager was working take-out mostly and cleaning tables. She was very nice and was attentive the couple times she passed by. The Tom Yum fried rice was fantastic. Everything was cooked perfectly...rice, meat, and vegetables. I could have dialed the heat back a little. A four really cleaned my sinuses out. The hot tea helped take the edge off. The pot stickers are fried...might as well be deep fat fried. Pretty standard with a typical sauce served with pot stickers or dumplings. The hot and sour soup... I'm not sure I've ever had it at ZuZap before. I love standard Chinese hot and sour soup from like Tsing Tsao or Shanghai. This version is different. Loved the mushrooms and pork in it...the soup base itself had a lot of "hot"...I really didn't get much sour. It seemed thinner than others I've had. It has it's pluses and minuses. The jury's still out on the soup I guess. The manager saw I was done and brought me my bill. I had my card ready so she took care of it for me too. After she dropped it off I signed my copy. $10.55 before tip. I stood up, slid my jacket on, looked around... Staff wasn't really paying attention. I placed the bill on the table and walked to the door. One more glance. Nothing. I slid on my ball cap and headed to my car. No thank you for coming...no see you again. The meal was good, but the overall experience was lacking. Service wasn't bad...just absent for the most part. I'd probably opt for take-out next time. I definitely received a reminder why I frequent Eat Thai more than ZuZap, Cool Basil, etc. I don't know if there's a huge difference in the food, but there was a huge difference in how they make me feel as a guest at their tables.

I gave three stars since I'm feeling generous because the waiter actually asked me what I thought of the Kaw Soi. It had a lot of tough chicken breast meat that was cooked sometime in the distant past. The broth was "seasoned" with powdered chicken flavoring. I know it because my wife used to put that stuff in everything. The quantity of noodles was way too low and it was salty. The spring rolls were boring and I don't know what syrupy garbage that was for dipping. They use those cheap wrappers that get all puffy when deep fried. I'm still in the restaurant as I write this. Still kind of hungry since I didn't eat most of that lame chicken. Ed cried "Where is all the dark meat?" But they all looked away, ashamed and knowing. They sold their Asian cooking soul long ago when they compromised to the lame demands of the chicken thigh haters. They looked around and cursed to themselves, "Why do we cook breast meat in the morning for dinner? Why not cook to order? Fresh like Mother did..." But those days are gone. At night, some wish for authenticity, but cannot escape the culinary bounds they have bound themselves in. Like overcooked noodles they have gone limp and soft. They pour on the charm like MSG on General Tso chicken and look to their real savior, the cash register.

I called in a take out order on a Wednesday at noon. First call the line was busy. Second call I was put on hold for about 5 minutes, but then came on and took my order. I ordered pad se ew at a 3 spice level. They took my card number over the phone. They quoted 20-25 minutes for pick up. That worked well for me, other than I as hungry. I ran my groceries home and picked up a prescription before parking in their lot waiting for my food. They brought it right to my car, it's Covid season. I got it home, it was a nice portion in a styrafoam box, bt lined with tin foil. It was good and hot when I got it home. It was very tasty and the perfect amount of spice for me.

Atmosphere: The inside isn't large, but looked nice and cozy, almost a hole in the wall type of feel. Seating: Tables and chairs Service: I went during Covid times, so I called for takeout as there is no dine-in at this time. It was an hour wait which was totally fine and expected on a Friday night. Good things are worth waiting for anyways! I paid at the counter. The girl was super nice, friendly, and wore a mask! Food: DELICIOUS. I got takeout, and never expect the food to be perfectly warm when getting back from picking up takeout, but it was definitely still nice and warm when I got home. They have nice, durable, plastic containers which I think helps keep the heat in better than styrofoam. I got the $13.95 dinner set that comes with one entrée, soup, and spring roll. I chose chicken pad Thai, pork spring roll, and Thai coconut soup. The pad Thai was SO flavorful and creamy with a perfect amount of peanut texture added in. I got level 1 spice and it was the perfect amount of spice: not too bland and not too spicy. The spring roll was awesome: crispy and filled with lots of flavor. The soup was good, I just don't think it meshed well with my personal taste. Also ordered a side of shrimp Rangoon's (5) and the filling was so fresh and creamy and Shell was crispy. Lastly, it comes with a fortune roll that was actually really tasty. Overall, five stars, two thumbs up, 10/10. Go try it!

We were just here a few weeks ago and I am so bummed to see they permanently closed!! We came during lunch and took advantage of their weekday lunch combo (Tues-Fri, 11am-2pm), which includes soup and a half grilled cheese. You can choose from the OG, Kick in the Cheese, or Fancy grilled cheese, plus either tomato basil bisque or the soup of the day. Honestly? A dream setup. I ordered the tomato basil bisque with a half OG grilled cheese, and wow... just wow. The soup was rich, flavorful, and perfectly balanced, and the grilled cheese delivered that classic, beautiful cheese pull moment you hope for (and rarely actually get). The cheese had the perfect amount of sharpness and subtle bitterness, balancing everything out so well without being overwhelming.. I seriously could go for one right now! Every bite was comforting and delicious, and I immediately wished I had ordered a full OG sandwich because it was that good. The combo was mouth‑watering, satisfying, and wildly exceeded expectations for a quick lunch stop.

It was a Friday evening and when we entered, about half the tables were full. We were guided to a table and given menus and water (glasses and a pitcher) arrived shortly after. My son definitely wanted the chicken momos. We asked for them as mild as they could make them. My husband chose the chicken vindaloo (medium) and I asked for the Korma Masala with chicken. I asked for it mild, especially so our son would be able to have some of mine, but was told it could only come medium or spicy. So I chose medium. We also placed an order of butter naan. My husband and son ordered fountain drinks. The waiter pointed out the fountain machine and told them to help themselves to start and for refills. My son and husband's food came out along with the naan. There was no mention about mine. We started to wonder if mine had been forgotten but then it came. Our son dove into his momos and almost immediately said they were too spicy. The other Indian restaurants we've been to put the sauces on the side. These had the sauce on them. He powered through and ate four. We were proud of him for doing so. My husband and I ate the rest. I enjoyed the flavor but agreed it would be spicy for a kid. The dumpling wrap seemed to be dry in places. Otherwise, I liked them. My husband enjoyed his chicken vindaloo for the most part. He did mention he's had chicken vindaloo at other Indian restaurants and said he didn't recall it being so tangy. My Korma Masala was fine. It was definitely spicier than I'd desired and there was no way my 8 year old would have enjoyed trying it. My nose would not stop running from the spice level. The butter naan was tasty. Service was non-existent once our food arrived. While other tables did get filled and orders taken, we felt completely ignored. We didn't know if the check came to us or if we needed to pay at the counter. No idea where to get to-go containers. We saw people from a large party coming up and ordering at the counter. Since this was our first time here, we had no clue if this was due to being understaffed or just the norm. Definitely not a good service experience. Our son was disappointed and asked to return to our "usual" Indian restaurant in the metro. I can't disagree.

Was promptly seated and didn't have to wait long to get my order in or receive my food. Now I was in early so I could see how it could get busy as service picks up because seating can be a little limited. The restaurant was clean and decorated well enough. The location doesn't do it many favors but the food is good so I'll likely come back. I requested the New Delhi-Style Noodles because I enjoy yellow curry dishes and was needless to say I was impressed. The vermicelli noodles were great dipped into the accompanying fish sauce with curried chicken bites in between. The portion was solid for lunch and I didn't feel like I needed more to get me through until dinner. Potstickers were just okay. The dipping sauce didn't do them any favors--this felt like an easy upgrade they're missing. Imperial Egg Rolls were the biggest letdown. At $17 for three, I expected something memorable...they just weren't. Pad Thai landed squarely in "average." Grilled Honey Roast Chicken Egg Noodles was a mixed bag. The chicken itself was delicious, but the noodles were pretty bland--and oddly, they didn't really work together. Royal Fried Rice was a win. The combo of BBQ pork, sweet sausage, and shrimp came together really well. Seafood Noodle dish was unfortunately pretty bland. All in all, a few bright spots, but not a place we're rushing back to--though I'd reorder those wings without hesitation.
