I've never been to their store in person but I order from them often on Slice and I've dealt with the folks there a couple of times via phone or delivery. Staff is always a pleasure. Their food (I've tried their pizza, subs, fries, wings, tenders, calzones, salad, falafel/chickpeas/rice/spinach, biryani) is really all tasty. I always get compliments when I offer their pizza at gatherings because it's light (thin crust, not dense) but flavorful. zzPizza has a definite "local business" attitude and comportment. When ZZ opened, we went out of our way to patronize them. The food was great for a local carry out. When the kids ordered pizza, we made sure they ordered from ZZ. We often called ZZ to bring food to the pool and promoted them to other members. Over the years, I've heard lots of complaints about service, the quality of the food, the changing menu, as well as other grievances. At a certain point, the kids refused to patronize ZZ's. Today, I thought I'd give them another chance. I ordered a veggie sub. The young woman behind the counter was a bit short with me, but I at first made nothing of it. It's only when I get home, open up the wrapping, and find that she gave me a meat sub that I began to suspect something was up. It was confirmed when I came back. She made me wait before dealing with me and then tried to gaslight me my saying I ordered a meat sub and not a veggie sub. It was weird, and she refused to refund my money at first after I realized she was messing with me. After yelling at me, another staff member must have told her to give me a refund. Even as she's returning a partial refund (I was two dollars short), she continued to badger me. I really believe I faced discrimination and may file a complaint with the Human Relations Commission. I first heard of it when I got the carry-out style paper menu in the mail. I was skeptical at first considering there are too many crappy carryouts around here. The first thing I ordered was a pizza because it's the first thing on the menu and you can really tell a place by the pizza. Not 100% true with this place They do have some unique styles of pizza, but it's not the best tasting. I got a "NY Stake Pizza" (and yes I know how to spell, there are numerous spelling errors on the menu) it has Philly Cheese Steak on it which is odd because it's called a New York pizza.... The second time I ordered from them I got a "Meat Special" Strombolli. Mmmmm.... It was huge!!! and it really did have every meat!!! From Pepperoni, Sausage, Cheese Steak, Bacon... and it was really good too!!!! Third time I ordered I got a Gyro with lamb AND chicken. The chicken was not a strip of frozen deep fried chicken like a lot of other carryouts, the chicken was cubed up but it was good quality grilled chicken breast! and the lamb wasn't half bad either. Home-Made tziki sauce too!!! It came with fries, but by the time they got to our house they were soggy. My fiance tiffany, ordered a Philly Cheese Steak Sub.... a whole one.... it was hugggeee. It says its sup[posed to be a 12 inch sub but i swear it was 16 inches. and it was sooo good. It didn't come with fries tho, and it was a bit pricey for not coming with fries. They also have 30 different types of milk shakes which all taste like they're supposed to and they are thick and creamy! YUM!! I got mint and it was amazing. They also have items you wouldn't find in a normal carryout. Like Kabobs, and quesadillas. which I haven't tried yet. They have a full section for vegetarian food, and a healthy choices section. We ordered a large pizza and it was great-ready on time, perfect temperature and tasty.

I have never been to ZZ Pizza's physical location, but after my experience on Saturday, I plan on checking them out soon. This was a relatively large online order so I can only speak on the quality and the customer service. The online order/transaction thru Yelp was decent although it took me a minute to distinguish adding a special vs a regular order. Also, and this is quite minor, I asked them to deliver the pizza at 1:15 pm and the pizzas arrived at 12:40 pm. Luckily the students who came to our workshop were really early so it actually worked out perfectly. Under other conditions.....mmmm. The delivery man was very friendly. I wasn't a fan of pre-paying for tip, but $2 ain't never hurt nobody (I hope!). We'll be using ZZ Pizza again for our end of the month meeting. read more

Update: THE HUMMUS IS SO GOOD!!! - The secret star of their menu in my opinion... It is some of the best I've had anywhere - so fresh and creamy, with delicious tahini and spices. I really want to like this place - really, I do. When they first opened up, they were our go-to pizza place - yummy veggie entries, great kabob, fun pizza options that put it a cut above other area pizza places. But boy - they have become so undependable in terms of delivery. The past few orders took an hour or so, and definitely arrived on the cooler side. Tonight, after an hour, I called, expecting the typical "The driver is on the way." But no. They had lost my order - despite the email confirmation that the order had been received and I could expect delivery within 45 minutes. I was informed that if I give it to them now over the phone, they'll be glad to deliver to me in 45 minutes... I politely declined. I will never be ordering from them again. read more

He indicated that he had been out of town that weekend and, after reading my review, had spoken with the employee who had (mis-)handled my order. He offered me a generous credit to compensate for my bad experience and was, overall, very courteous and apologetic. As a result - and since the pizza I eventually received was quite tasty - I'm amending my review from one- to four-stars. ------------------------ Original Review: On second thought: After our second order took nearly two hours to deliver AND our fries were cold AND my vegan pizza was covered in cheese (despite it being a cheese'less item by default) AND after the woman who answered the phone when I called to complain kept telling me in a not-so-friendly manner that I had ordered it with cheese (when there was absolutely no chance of this) AND when she put me on hold not once, but twice to take other orders AND when she told me that she could not refund my money, nor could she send me a replacement pizza anytime soon, because she was "really, really busy"... After a bit of investigation, it turned out that Foodler's system had automatically added the note about the cheese. I tried to explain this to Zz Pizza, but they were - again - "not-so-friendly", adamant that it was my fault and informing me that they had lost money on me. In fact, I got a detailed breakdown of how much it costs them to make and deliver a pizza. I mean, mistakes happen and at least one of the issues described above had nothing to do with Zz Pizza. However, the complete lack of customer service - (e.g., no call to let us know that the order would be an hour past the anticipated delivery time, the incredibly rude treatment that I received when trying to explain the cheese situation, and making no effort to fix the incorrect order) - was enough to turn us off this restaurant for good. I have had terrible experiences with their customer service. The food actually tastes good - but the odds of getting the food on time, or at all, are shockingly low. The prior two times I ordered from them: 1. Once I ordered pizza to be delivered for my son and a babysitter online, got confirmation, etc. As my wife and I were out, we got a call from the babysitter: No pizza. So I interrupted my date to call the place, and got no answer. I tried and tried, and then called the other Zz Pizza operation, which reported that their Mt. Rainier store was out of electricity. How is a customer supposed to deal with that? When I finally called the other store they offered to deliver -- three hours later, well after my son and his friend would have gone to bed. 2. Later I ordered to the PG Pool, where they deliver regularly, only a few minutes away, on a regular Sunday afternoon. Again the order went through, and again: No pizza after more than an hour. I called and called, got no answer. In frustration I got in my car and drove by to find the store flat-out-closed in the middle of a weekend. Lights out, no one home. In frustration I called the other store in DC, and yet again was told, "We can deliver one for you in a few hours." What is up with that? I have heard from other neighbors in Mt. Rainier and Northeast DC that their delivery has gotten increasingly unreliable, but that is just beyond the pale. I am not ordering from there again. read more

Amazing! I just moved to the neighborhood about 2 months ago and I can't believe that something that looks like a carry out could be so delicious. I was extremely hesitant about going there because I'm vegan and typically being vegan and going to carry outs don't mix. How wrong was I? The food was so good that I have ordered from their vegan/veterinarian menu all week. Typically, I stop at Glut or Sweet Natural before going home, but they were closed and I was starving, so I decided to give ZZ's a try. I went in expecting only to order fries, but I was extremely delighted by their extensive vegan/vegetarian menu! I ordered the Veggie Biryani! WOW! They took frozen veggies, yellow rice and chickpeas to a whole new level. This meal was amazing. They use authentic spices and if you ask them to add more veggies, they will at no cost (score)!!! :-) I'd love it if their veggies were fresh, but you can't win em all. Today, I phoned them for a delivery order. I took a chance on the Vegan Pizza and the Veggie Falafel Dinner. I know that it's going to rain this weekend so I want to have plenty of food on hand so i won't have to go out. Imagine my surprise when the vegan pizza (I didn't expect it to be that good) was incredible AND the Falafel Dinner was magnificent too!!! I hereby crown the Falafel Dinner with grilled mixed veggies as my favorite meal thus far from their vegan menu. I will definitely order from and stop by this clean carry out-esque eatery again. Okay, so I got that gyro again. Basically, I am really glad there is a place to get a gyro a few blocks from my house. They switched from crinkle fries to steak fries, which I consider a slight improvement. The only other suggestion I would make at this point is that they offer some sturdier straws with the milkshakes. They are too thick and delicious for the likes of an average drinking straw. If you are patient and open to clarifying your order repeatedly, this is the best place for delicious pizza and any grilled chicken related product. The tandoori-prepared chicken in the chicken Parmesan sub is to die for! I would avoid the milkshakes only because they are never in stock. You will place your order online and they will call you back letting you know that your milkshake is not in stock. It's a running joke for me. I thought this place was good! We tried the falafel - which were patties instead of the usual balls, but they were tasty - cooked perfectly! The tahini sauce was nice and they were served with romaine lettuce. We also tried the combination Hummus, baba ghanoush and dolmas. The sampler portion was LARGE! (Enough for 3 people). Service is friendly and our food was prepared to order in about 10 minutes. We ate in the restaurant. For the price and location, this place is definitely worth stopping by. I went to ZZ Pizza and Kabob and ordered their fried tilapia platter. Thirty minutes later I was throwing up and had a high fever. From all the symptoms, I had food poisoning. I called the establishment the next day end explained what happened. The owner was irate and said my breath smelled like alcohol when I was there. There pizza is good. I had the supreme pizza and the meat lovers. They dont use any pork so I can appreciate that. I really really liked their hot wings! I also LOVED their steak&cheese! They have a sweet potato pound cake that is really good and its big enough to share with 3 people! I have never dined in but everything I get delivered comes at the time they say and its Hot. At first, I wasn't sure why they named this place "Zz Pizza." Is it a ZZ Top reference? A ploy to be listed last in the yellow pages? But now I know - this place is a snooze. At first glance, the menu is pretty awesome. Pizza, wings, salads, mezzas, appetizers, subs, milkshakes... very diverse, plenty to choose from. And the staff was incredibly friendly as we ordered, checking on anything they were worried they might not have. With a menu that size, they're bound to be out of a few things. They had the ingredients for all of our food, but out of their lengthy milkshake menu they actually only had the stuff to make about 5 flavors. Meh. After we ordered, they told us the wait would be about 10 minutes. The place was sweltering, so we wandered around the neighborhood for a little bit. The food actually took about 20-25 minutes, so we ended up sweating it out at Zz for a while. The food was bland and disappointing. The kufta kabob salad didn't come with any dressing or sauce - the kabob itself was tasty (though oversalted and a bit undercooked) but the salad underneath was dry and boring. Yay, lettuce. The falafels were overcooked and really hard, and came with more lettuce and a tahini sauce. Our baba ghanouj was flavorless, without any of the smokiness I love about the dish. And even the jalapeno poppers were disappointing, with a very watery cheese sauce that leaked everywhere. Everything was edible, but it wasn't a meal that I enjoyed. I ordered online and because it's literally 2 blocks from our house I walked to pick up our pizza order. I didn't leave the house for about 10 minutes and when I got there they said it would be a few minutes. No prob. I waited for 15 minutes until the order came out. He looked at the pizza and noted they had left off the feta cheese and they just sprinkled it on top. Ive lived in area for 5 yrs and Ive seen this place several times but finally decided to try them and I was very impressed!! One day we got a meatlovers pizza and sweet chili wings. The pizza was soooo fresh and cheesy. The wings were pretty good too. Went back 2 days later and tried the buffalo chicken stromboli and that was just as good as the pizza was. I live in the neighborhood and love having this place within walking distance of my house. There are plenty of items on the menu and some interesting named ones too (arab pizza, buffalo calzone).The gyros are tasty and my fries have always been hot. Though the wait time can be long sometimes The Glut Co-op is across the street for any last minute grocery needs. I must say I've been disappointed in the past from pizza places that seem to cater to mostly any available type of fast food but this time I've his quite the wall. I ordered their 2 large pizzas with 2 toppings each and a side order of Baba ganoush. I clearly stated on their online form that I wanted thin crust and the ingredients for each. At the end of the online sales process it mentions that I should receive an email confirmation. Well I never received said confirmation even though I verified my email twice and looked through my spam folder. An hour and a half later I started wondering if I was ever going to receive my food. That's when I decided to give them a call .... 3 tries later still no one answered. At this point I'm almost certain I'm never going to see said pizzas. Considering that I live less than a mile away from their location, distance should not be a factor on the delivery time! Well to my surprise 5 min later the driver was out from with my order. I walked out to meet him and was given my order. At this point I was so hungry I couldn't even bother to state my discontent let alone argue the prepaid tip! Once in the house and boxes open, my first observation .... regular crust. Thick, not particularly well cooked and predominant. Second observation, distribution of the ingredients must have been handled by an infant ... because most of the pizza had cheese and the rest had the toppings ... and clearly it was the same person that made both pies! Third observation, and in my opinion, the most important one. The pizza just didn't taste good... the cheese was abysmal, the salami must have been cut my butcher because it was the thickness of a pork chop(obviously not quite but you get the idea!), and all this pales in comparison to the Baba ganoush .... which was uneatable. It was bitter, bland, and oddly sour. Let's just say it was a poor attempt at satisfying a craving. Since my wife and I tend to eat more on the healthy side, the occasional treats are something we look forward to but in this case ... it's left a bad taste in our mouths and disappointment about our one cheat meal!
