A quite little bar with an extensive rotating tap menu. We were looking for a quick place to grab a drink after a long day exploring the city and this fit our needs perfectly. Many interesting beers to choose from and friendly service. A decent sized cooler as well if you don't see anything you like on the tap menu. You have to put a card down to start a tab and remember to go close out before you leave. Hard to believe it's been more than half a decade since this place opened. They've used their time wisely, without a doubt. When they began, they were a wonderfully weird little enclave of beeriness along this tawdry strip of Aurora. After years of perfecting their craft, cultivating a clientele both locally and far beyond the city limits, investing their profits carefully, and stockpiling an OCD-esque retinue of fermented delights to serve not before their time, Über is now...a wonderfully weird little enclave of beeriness along this tawdry strip of Aurora. They've added to it, certainly, though the footprint inside is still the same. They added the little sidewalk courtyard a couple years ago, and added the planter boxes around the same time. After some unsolicited overnight editorializing from the local Crackhead Gardeners Club, the ambitions of those planter boxes have been scaled back rather markedly, but the pleasant al fresco seating option remains--covered and railed in. Inside, what used to feel like a kooky house party with a fire table in the middle and big bottle coolers behind the bar now feels like a stylishly kooky house party with a fire table in the middle and big bottle coolers behind the bar. The refined blue on the walls now suggests a tony library at a gentleman's club, so be a gentleman, for heaven's sake. The multi-ton zebrawood beast of a bar suggests locales even more exotic than Aurora ("Where is that wood grown?" "Africa." "Noooo...*zebras* are from Africa. Where is zebra*wood* from?" "Under the ze..." Never mind.). The walnut ceiling-support beam suggests...that spending a butt-ton of extra money on fine hardwoods is worth it sometimes. Gone are the colossal tap towers that used to protect the bartenders from: archers, trebuchets, and being able to see customers. Well, the Delirium Tremens tower is still there, over the inlaid Scrabble board, but every bar needs a pink elephant on the corner. In addition to Scrabble, you can also play Backgammon under a heavy layer of resin, if you get the right seats. But what matters most here is the beer. And this beer selection is truly a matter of great import. Hundreds of bottles line the cooler racks, with a fair emphasis on rare and small batch big American beers and a freighter full of bigger (i.e., more alcoholic) European stuff, both classics and newer releases. There are also tap handles, now bundled together in a phalanx of malty infantry on the back wall, which boasts a luminous interweave of glass subway tiles. Such design flair! ("Yeah, I have the gay gene when it comes to decorating." You just can't make this stuff up. You can only catch people when they're loaded and write it down for blackmailing them later.) What's particularly cool about the tap lineup is the new War-Games-like array of monitors above the coolers, listing all kegs in the order they were tapped, along with the next three on deck. No more scrambling for a little green book, and wondering if you should hurry up and order a given beer in case it might kick before you get to it. The staff here has been wise and powerful since day one. This shows no signs of abating. I often hate coming in here when it's busy simply because it means less chance to shoot the breeze with them. Or throw a Frisbee. What no one bar can change, though, is the local color on display outside, along Aurora Avenue North. More than once as I have sipped a tasty beverage here, young ladies have walked back and forth and back and forth past the windows of the establishment. I figured they must have been running errands, or moving, or something, but they were never carrying anything, so it's hard to be certain. That motorized pageant of humanity, the Metro #358, stops right outside the sidewalk patio here. When a 60-foot limo rolls up, it can easily block every window in the place, making you feel like you're in a dark little cave (well, you are, not even figuratively speaking). When that 358 shadow settles over the room, what you are is an easily-distracted baby seal that just noticed the great white swimming over you and blocking out all your light. Those squealy bus brakes are the hoots of an owl in the dreams of a mouse. Über is one of the oases in a stretch of road that Seattle forgot. (Not on accident did Seattle forget this scrofulous motorway, either.) There's a bit of character lately to some businesses around here, and there's even a high-end spot across the street (PCC). You can bring in your own food from anywhere, though PCC and Beth's are natural choices, and Aloha Ramen is a personal favorite. There's a book behind the bar somewhere, full of take-out menus. Just ask for it. Every industry needs places that push to offer the best of everything. Über has very few equals, and no superiors, especially when you count the square footage. This is awesome, chill tavern with an ever rotating list of around 20 beers on tap. The owner Rick is a great guy, and very well-versed in his beer selections. Great ambiance and lots of big screens for viewing the games. The bar isn't actually open until 2am, but if you get there earlier Rick is willing to keep things open as long as people are around. The moment I walked into Uber Tavern and Bone Thugs n Harmony was playing, I fell in love. Great beer on tap, awesome bottle selection, cool ass bartender (Niko), and Bone Thugs!? Was I dreaming? Somebody pinch me, or slap me, this place is too good to be true. The wall decor is awesome, an artist painted common beer logos in the "Dia De Los Muertos" theme. There is a huge fire pit in the middle of the seating area, and board games waiting to be played. Their rotating tap list is unbeatable, and their available bottle selection that you can buy from and take to-go or drink in store? Even better. We sampled the Cascade 'Kriek 09' and 'Jelly Roll' (which is really the Raspberry Wheat) which were both mouth puckering delicious. Also purchased a bottle of Southern Tier "Pumpking" and two bottles of Boulevard Bourbon Barrel Aged Quad. The bartender, Niko, was totally cool we talked beer for awhile. That guy knows the beer scene damn well! He recommended some awesome spots for us to check out on the Portland leg of our beer-trek. I think Uber and Bouwer's Cafe are at the top end of the beer scene. But Uber lets you buy bottles to-go, which is freaking awesome. Bike & Brew "2009 Spring Invitational". For those hardy Uber fans among you, stalwarts of this "Little Joint, Big Selection" place, there is a very special event this coming Sunday: The first ever Bike & Brew Spring Invitational, combining fun riding, conviviality, sketchy bars (and some not so sketchy) and plenty of good beer (PBR and beyond). My favorite Greenwood haunt. They have great beers on tap, they almost always have some awesome rare beers in their bottle collection, and they're right next to a game shop! Really good place to hang with friends, if you don't have a whole lot of em!! I only say that cuz the place is teeeeny tiny. The pics on here are quite deceiving. My friends and I chose to have our get together at a chill bar where we could actually conversate without screaming. The big seller was the fire pit, my friend wanted good backgrounds for pictures. (We're cheesy I know!) Anyways when we got there the table with the fire pit was taken by 2 people just hanging out...kinda irked with that, thanks for hogging the only, I mean *best seat in the house! They eventually left and we took over. Just in time cuz our party of 5, grew to 9 shortly after! Where would have we all sat?!! Haha. The fire pit was not on, but ask and you shall receive!! Parking around here sucks but if you're lucky and make it here, it's a great place to hang out for awhile. The beer selection is amazing and there's some tables with board games built into them. Just ask the bartender to lend you a chess, checkers or scrabble set! I wish they served food or at least some some snacks like pretzels. I get so munchy! After reading all the reviews of Über, I was really looking forward to a chance to get out and see it especially after reading the selection of the beers they had in the cellar that could be broken out. After going, I was a little disappointed. Their tap list was good, but not quite as good as I was hoping for. I did get to have the Rouge XS Imperial Stout on tap which was delicious and I've only ever seen in 7 oz bottles before, but they didn't have any other porter or stout that really jumped at me and my wife was a little disappointed that the didn't seem to have any super-hoppy IPAs for her. The atmosphere was also just a little odd. One side had a couch and chairs around a coffee table that looked fake chic and almost like it was just IKEA furniture cleverly disguised in mood lighting. Next to it is a table with a light shining up through translucent stones in the middle of it with six seats around it. Things just don't quite jive for some reason. It's one part dive bar and one part classy jazz bar, but with no jazz. I'd go back again for a beer or two if I was going out with a friend who really liked his beer, but for my money, I think I'd be happier at Brouwers. read more

I don't even like beer and I'm giving Uber 5 stars... Well, like I said, I don't like beer, so this 5 star rating isn't because of taste (I've only tried one item which confirmed my prior statement). BUT, this place has a really chill, low-key vibe going on. It's small and all they do are drinks, so you're able to bring your own food in if you like. There's a couple of flat screens playing the game, a handful of tables and plenty of space at the counter. Their recent remodel was a success... the feel of the place has been preserved, it's just been upgraded a bit. I'm in love. Utterly, whole-heartedly, fantastically smitten. Absolutely, no-doubt-about-it, wonderously twitterpated. Then again it isn't hard to find your way into my heart if you know what I like... and I really like beer. And Über goes above and beyond (tehe - German puns) when it comes to beer. Great tap list. I seriously had to sit and take 10 minutes to decide because my options were all ~great~. Don't come in here looking for a PBR, come in looking for something crafted with care-- top notch imports and local brews. They have an even more impressive bottles list. I wish this was closer and I don't, cuz I would be here every night slowly drinking my paychecks away. Service is friendly and laid back. If the bartender can't explain some of your options look for one of several books in the joint that go over every type of beer imaginable that explains ingredients, flavor, and mouth feel. Keep that book handy and you'll be a beer pro/snob in no time. Decor is all semi-beer themed. The skeleton themed, local, beer paintings being an amusing thing to consider when sipping your brew. Not a lot of seating, but if you are lucky you can enjoy their fireplace in a center table on one of those more chilly evenings or have your pint and snuggle up with someone on their single, bright red couch. No, seriously, if you like beer EVEN JUST A LITTLE BIT, you will want to go here, and if you even have only a germ of an idea of what you enjoy, tell the bartender, and he'll find something you will love so much you'll want to give it a ring right then and there. They also have a particular beer named Delerium Tremens on tap, whose symbol is a pink elephant - which I suspect it is because this beer is SO GOOD that you want to drink it until you see fuschia pachyderms lambada through your brain. [EDIT: they don't always keep it on tap, but they'll have bottles of it there. It remains freaking delicious.] Parking is a wench and the place is smaller than my living room, so keep that in mind - but don't let it stop you from going. Just be prepared to fuss about looking for a place to put your car, and to be a bit squished inside (ESPECIALLY if a brewer like Port [from San Diego] or Allagash [from Maine] is in town with their stuff). Absolutely worth it. Also it bears mentioning: Uber is the EIGHTH BEST BEER BAR IN THE WORLD. It's got the actual award saying so right up there on the wall. Keep that in mind. read more

If I were to count the number of good times I've had at Uber, I'd run out of fingers and toes. Good idea: Try a couple of the more obscure beers you haven't heard of. Bad idea: Order a bunch of beers you've never heard of, ignoring the alcohol percentage, and then try to peel yourself off the floor at the end of the night. Good idea: Ask the bartender about some of the beers, and find out which he (or she) recommends. Bad idea: Try to impress the bartender with how much you know about beer. Trust me. They're not condescending, but most of the bartenders here have forgotten more about beer than you ever knew. Good idea: Bring a buddy who appreciates beer. Bad idea: Bring eight friends who think that paying $6 for a pint of beer is ridiculous, and that all bars should have $1 PBRs and shots of Jager. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Good idea: Grabbing a slice of pizza from the shop next door after you head out. Bad idea: Asking the bartender at Uber for a food menu. There isn't one. read more

Well, while she may very well have been right, I ended up having the last laugh, as my visit happened to be timed in tandem with the arrival of a keg of Pliny the Elder. Uber is my favorite place to try a new beer, or buy a keg for the home kegerator. They have around 15-20 beers on tap, and then another few hundred in bottles elegantly displayed in large, glass refrigerators behind the bar. Except for Delerium Tremens, which is always on tap, the selection is varied and changes frequently. Belgian beers are generally well-represented, along with a few more exotic brews such as agave mead. The bartenders always seem really knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the beers. It's a small place, but very nice and cozy. There's a really neat gas firebowl filled with crushed glass in the middle of the place that is fun to sit around in the winter. In the summer, they seem to replace the flame with a slightly cheesy bubbling water cauldron, like the kind you see around Halloween, but I guess it complements the cool skeleton-themed beer art on the walls. As far as kegs to go, they have a really good selection and reasonable prices. Sometimes you can even get a good half-barrel microbrew for $99 (plus tax). read more

Here's why I love my former college roommate: while driving aimlessly through Ballard ("What do you want to do?" "Uh, I don't know, what do you want to do?") she looks out the window and goes, "Hey! I think I've been here before... there's a bar... there!" Lo and behold, from behind a Seattle City bus emerges Uber. (I fully acknowledge we were obviously no longer in Ballard when this happened). Uber is a small bar: there were seeming-regulars posted up around the bar itself, with seating for maybe ten more in the rest of the space. Bottled beer is stored in refrigerated cases behind the bar proper, a display I always appreciate as I'm a "judge a book by its cover" type, a technique that also extends to beer. If you're a little more discerning, Uber's beer list is wonderfully organized by country, with details that the beer aficionado AND frat dude would certainly admire, the latter for the alcohol content listings, and the former for the descriptions. The list doesn't feel gimmicky either - Uber isn't going for the largest beer list in the world - you get a sense that they're there to serve the beer-loving public and maybe educate the less-than-beer-loving along the way. There are the usual televisions tuned to sports around the bar, as well as a selection of well-loved board games. The staff is knowledgeable and ready to recommend something to suit your tastes. And if you're serving a larger crowd they also have kegs to go. Do let me know if you'll be getting a keg for your next get together from Uber - I'll be sure to show up! After you've grabbed your gun at Butch's gun shop on Aurora (my previous review), head up the block for an Uber shot of the beer variety, and enjoy a multi-logue about the virtues of a particular beer, or how Ricky will do now that he's back home, or a half-jocular/half-serious positing of whether Obama is an alien planted here to take over the world. Uber is small, but a cool space, virtually guaranteed to have you interacting with fellow beer-heads in no time. Just don't bring up the "B"-word here (no not Butch's gun shop -- that's a-ok). No I'm referring to that "other" place that serves a lot of beer -- Brouwers is a sensitive topic, I came to find out. Uber has so many beers available it'll make your head spin. Fortunately, the user-friendly menu does it's best to categorize it's beer by state or country, and explain the differences between the different kinds of beer. "First, all you need to know is there's only two kinds of beer... ALE, and LAGER." This entertainingly simplified description, followed by a much more detailed breakdown of sub-types of beer is a great way to get your curiosity, and your appetite, wet. You'll find a very generous (and artfully chosen) collection of beers from around the country and the world here. But they don't have EVERYTHING. So don't be too disappointed if that refreshing South African Lager you've been pining for is missing, or Kona beer from Hawaii, for example -- those are not on the menu. But do come with an adventurous spirit, and an open mind, because you will definitely find something interesting, and quite possibly, if you keep drinking and talking about Obam-aliens, you might even blow your mind. PROS: LOTS of beers in an inviting environment, designed to get you talking to a few of your new best friends there. Pricing is varied, but there are always interesting specials that are comfortably cheap. Not as crowded and therefore better, more personalized service than at that "B" place. CONS: They don't have EVERY beer, so don't expect that. Probably not the best bar to get wasted and party it up in a large, obnoxious groups. read more

I am actually not a huge beer drinker but I have been here twice and tried several new brews. I really thought the digital menu was pretty darn cool. First time, I was there with a new friend and the people sitting at the bar with us were pretty cool too - I even got into a discussion with one about finding a good Southern Gumbo spot in Seattle and he had some good suggestions (although not in the city). It was overall a good experience and I learned quite a bit about beer. The second time I actually went in alone after work (which is kind of a big deal, like I said, I am not normally a beer drinker) because I really wanted to taste one of the beers I had tried the first time. Simply put, this is my favorite bar in the area. The selection, service, overall atmosphere, and just the experience in general is head and shoulders above anything else I've found yet. The beer menu is the most impressive I've seen yet; it trumps Brouwer's simply because they can maintain a ginormous menu, and have what you ask for in stock. The service is pheonomenal as well. The bartenders will chat with you about beer, or whatever. They give suggestions, educate you, and are just plain down to earth. This is everything a beer bar should be. Only downside is also a plus side. The place is small, very small. This is awesome for when the crowds aren't out, but there doesn't seem to be any real rhyme or reason to when it's crowded. Sometimes you'll show up and the place is empty, other times it's standing room only. But since they have done such a great job with the place, I can't dock them a star for this. Fantastic, fantastic, fantastic! I love this place! I recall driving by this place several times on my way up and down Aurora on errands. The front of Uber certainly isn't anything to write home about, but inside is where all the magic happens. My friends and I stopped here on a Saturday afternoon of what we like to call a "Beer Trek." This was the 3rd stop on our trek and certainly everyone's favorite. We arrived early on that Saturday afternoon and after what seemed like a few regulars filtered through, we had taken over the center seating area around a glass filled fire pit. The beer selection was amazing and sitting at the bar definitely gave you the best view of their selection on tap and in bottles. One of the better beer bars in this part of Seattle, their discerning import and craft-brew taps are only surpassed by the bewilderingly large bottle selection, which is only rivaled by Brower's Cafe in Fremont. Uber also specializes in kegs of good quality beer, which is nice if you want to make a big splash at your next party. Warning: Uber is a fairly tiny place that doesn't accommodate more than 1 large group at a time but for smaller groups it's the perfect stop off prior to a night on the town or a great end-cap for later. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable about the product, which is essential for a high-quality selection like this. Everything they serve is of the specialty (aka pricey) variety, so don't expect to find a discount on "Bud", it won't happen here, baby! read more

They've remodeled the place a bit. It's now better than ever. Take note of the flatscreens behind the bar. On them, you'll see the current taps, information about them, prices, and coming soon attractions. The creature comforts have been updated a bit as well, but it's still the Uber you've known. One of my favorite beer bars in the city, no question. Do I wish it were a bit bigger? Sure. Do I wish it were in a better location in proximity to downtown? Sure. But, man.....this place is all about the beer. They do a great job of bringing in nothing but the best available. The bartenders know their beer and are always great with suggestions. Incredibly reasonable prices in comparison to other places around town for good beer. You can also get any of their bottles to go, fill growlers off the draft beer(most of them), and buy kegs of good (and bad) beer. Uber almost feels like a bar you would have in the basement of your house. Laid back with great beer. Someday, I would love to own a place exactly like Uber. read more

Uber is one of the best beer bars in Seattle. The bottle selection is killer, and they have a crazy amount of taps considering how small the place is. The cozy atmosphere and dedicated group of regulars really makes it feel like a neighborhood bar. The best part? The bartenders. My favorite is Ken - the hipster with a heart of gold. Don't want an attitude? Don't be a douchebag! You want fruit in your beer? Get the fuck outta here and get your ass down to Applebees. You don't want to have to order at the bar? Cry about it, saddlebags! If you want a bartender who took a trip to Belgium specifically to drink Belgian beer, you've come to the right place. My boyfriend loves the fancy beer here. I admit I like it too. There is usually a ton of unusual choices. Sadly I am often too cheap to try the most interesting ones as they can have some high price tags to go with them. On my last visit I was happy to see the tv monitor menus right above the bar. What is truly great though is that the staff can usually tell you what you should order if you tell them what type of beer you are looking for. I personally enjoy oddities and sours and they can always make some great suggestions. Its so much better than most places where you can order beers and the server has really no idea about the beer. My boyfriend was dissapointed that he couldn't have a sample before making his decision but they do have 2 oz samples available for purchase and the explanation for why this is not allowed does make complete sense. The firepit in the middle of the room is a nice touch as well, really making this seem like a great place to spend a cold rainy day. It also happens to be on our bus ride home from night's out in Seattle, allowing us to easily get on and off the bus for a bathroom break and another drink. read more

Another beer-geek haven which I need a 6th star to properly rate. This bar is all about the beer, and not much else. They're not trying to be cute or trendy, and the location's not exactly happening. From the quirky decor and the laidback patrons to the phenomenal tap and bottle list, there's nothing to complain about here. The bartender is happy to give you generous tasters of anything on tap, and will give you advice if you're not sure what to order. They also keep your water glass topped off without being asked. Big thumbs-up from me for this. Speaking of the patrons, if you enjoy watching crunken mofos trying to play a game of frisbee by standing on opposite sides of 6-lane Aurora Avenue, then you'll love this place. Their attempts to avoid hitting passing motorists with the frisbee were topped only by their frequent climbs up over the top of the awning to retrieve poorly-tossed frisbees. My hubby is a serious beer connoisseur, so we frequently include a brewery or specialty pub in our travelling. Luckily, we don't have to travel far for one of our favorite places. Several specialty beers on tap and even more bottles from all over the world. They usually have one of my favorite beers in a bottle - Pannepot. People come here because they serve damn good stuff without being stuffy or pretentious. Since they don't serve food, they have a pile of take-out menus. But if they're having one of their special release parties, try their pretzels. They take Costco pretzels and coat them with different stuff (my fave: cheese and bacon). If only they had those on a daily basis! read more

Uber is one of my favorite places in Seattle. Amazing beer selection and knowledgeable, friendly bartenders. No food, but you can bring your own or order delivery from a nearby restaurant (they keep a book of menus on hand). (Try a Cuban sandwich from Paladar Cubano or a torta from Barriga Llena with your beer!) One caution - beware of strong beers + playing with the stones in the fire table. I was visiting a week ago and met up with Tom B. after asking him to suggest a place he would take someone visiting from out of town. This is the place people who KNOW beer go, this is the place you go to discuss tasting notes. This is a great craft place.
