I have no idea what took me so long to get to the Shambles, but it is quite the neighborhood gem. The food is so delicious; I know that they're known for their steaks, but the veg was just as tasty as the meat - the tomatoes, the beets, the artichokes, and those potatoes. Zoinks. The steak is a delight, too, though - don't get me wrong. I am a Hanger devotee, and the Shambles' version was stellar. Such great natural flavor - it hardly needed the demi/ butter, but gilding the lily never hurt anybody. Service here is friendly and helpful - if you have questions, the capable staff will steer you. My one note: skip dessert so that you can focus on the savory menu items (not that the sweets were bad, they just get outshone by the salty stuff). read more

Second visit to The Shambles and loved it even more. It is in a nondescript building that you probably missed driving by it... inside is a cozy casual vibe. This is a nice restaurant that you would expect to have a really great experience at. I really enjoyed my black cod meal as I'm not a huge fan of steak. It had a very unique blend of flavors. We had a reservation for 3 but were seated at a high top when the rest of the place was rather empty. It was right next to the entrance door and was a bit warm. The veggie side didn't really cut it for anyone at the table. The mushroom assortment was really tasty. Unbelievably amazing secret hideaway steakhouse in Maple Leaf/Roosevelt area. The food is incredible, it is easily comparable to any fancy/famous steakhouse and and gives me major Peter Luger vibes (minus the old school men's club atmosphere). Overall this spot was so nice and I really enjoyed it. However there were a few things I noted that I really didn't enjoy. First off, the steak tartar was very good and I enjoyed the pickles and sauces and all the breads, very good. Our two sides were fine, we preferred the artichoke however it was very heavy but only to be as expected. I found even the vegetable medley to be pretty heavy which surprised me, this was a big disappointment to me, it didn't give me the contrast to the streaks and other heavy things that I wanted. The sauce wasn't strong and overall I didn't like it at all. The steaks overall were pretty good except we got one that was really uneven and it honestly brought the whole experience down. I had two different bites of the same steak and it went from amazing bite to so bad. The service was very very nice and they even gave a free ice cream scoop since we were celebrating my bday. I decided to come late-night at the last minute to feed my steak craving and didn't know what to expect. The vibe is cozy, casual, and charming -- like having a meal at your friends' who happen to love hosting. I got the Pickle Platter, a 6oz filet, a glass of Pinot Noir, and a side of potatoes. The pickles were made in-house and I had to stop myself from eating all of them before the rest came out! The filet with the beef tallow was delectable and really hit the spot. Under the previous ownership, I visited Jan 2018 with a co-worker and tried again Dec 2021, but that ended up as a no go because my dining companion forgot her Covid-19 vaccine card when she drove down from Mt. Vernon. The Shambles changed hands, reopened in 2022,, and continues being a popular neighborhood destination. The butcher/retail side is no more. The ongoing dining model reminds me of the former Bateau with HH, but also features select cuts of meat available during restaurant service. I ended up making a spontaneous detour, snagged the last parking slot, and was able to partake in the last fifteen minutes of happy hour (4-5pm, 8/1/25). Pleasant waitstaff that covered patrons seated at the wrap around counter seating along the bar, plus various seating configurations in the main dining area, and the covered outdoor seating. I splurged and ordered a bourbon based Manhattan ($8), well crafted and strong! I also received a large baby gem Caesar's salad ($11), well dressed, generous parmesan, and requisite croutons. The lemon wedge added that brightness. Easily this could feed 2-3 people. I learned later that one can request a half sized one. My main entree selected was the Steak Frites ($24) which comprised of a well executed, medium rare 7oz hangar steak topped with compound butter, served with shoestring fries and ketchup. The couple next to me had bevs, same salad, and steak frites. They also enjoyed steak tartare topped with an egg and served with crostini. It was nice to have a brief convo with the personable guy who sat to my left at the end of the bar counter. He had a cocktail, pint of beer, and same scaled down Caesar salad. I ended up ordering the S'mores Dip ($12) which was pistachio butter topped with torched marshmallow cream, drizzled with chocolate, and served with warm snickerdoodle cookies. Rich dessert! Primarily I ate this slowly because I wanted to see the 16oz medium rare ribeye (a la carte/market price) and crushed potatoes with aioli that guy had ordered. That looked glorious when it was brought to him. Steaks are seared in beef tallow and butter, finished with sea salt, and served sliced. I restrained myself from taking photos for Yelp/IG, lol. I had not been back since the owners switched over. The decor has been overall elevated. They also refocused on steaks and no longer have a charcuterie plate (bummer). There is a lot less beer on tap and the back patio looks really nice! The happy hour is still pricey but much more reasonable than the regular menu. The whole experience was perfect, starting with an innovative adaptation of a Sazerac, a well executed Caesar salad, and then that steak. First off, their address is 7777, already a great sign! This spot might just become one of my favorites. The seating is community-style, with a long table where parties sit next to each other. I feel like we had one of everything and each bite was delicious but I have to recommend the happy hour which has a fantastic selection of foods including a pretty awesome burger. Not much has changed about the dining room, but things are different enough these days that it's worth re-reviewing, if only to confirm the goodness that lives on. Lockdown was tough on these folks, and they scaled back their menu and seem to have ended their butcher-case activity, at least some of the time. It's a dine-in steakhouse these days. Three of us came in last night to have dinner ourselves and take dinner to two other folks. We had a reservation, and they were kind enough to seat us at a big table to keep us off the high stools (one of us has a bad back). The bar program seems to be what it has always been, with maybe slightly less-geeky and more-approachable kegs pouring. Ales, lagers, and sours, plenty of stuff to please hopheads and lovers of tart, malty, or fruity things. Ciders, wines, and cocktails. Everything on offer here has real thought behind it, and they pick good stuff. Everybody can find a good drink here. The menu SEEMS short. It's a few appetizers, literally just a couple sides, and then you crane your neck to look at the chalkboard to see what steaks are on. They have a cheat sheet with all the steak vocabulary you could want. This one's fattier, this one's leaner, this one is on the bone, this one might look like a funny shape, and so on. They break down the entire animal here and serve every possible cut of steak. They make magic with the trimmings, too. Last night there were about 20 varieties of steak on the board. I'm not kidding. It's not cheap, for the most part, but you're getting well-raised, well-fed, carefully-aged steaks. We had a boneless Delmonico (very expensive, dry-aged, velvety and fatty and delicious) an under blade (never heard of it, very reasonable, great texture and flavor), and a flank (mid-priced, about half a flank, dry-aged, wonderful texture and flavor). All steaks came out with compound butter and chives. They don't overseason the steaks or bury them when they're on the place--salt, pepper, butter, herbs. The flavors that add to almost any savory dish add great notes here, but almost everything you taste is wonderful steak. We had the steak tartare appetizer (awesome thick crostini, fresh raw egg yolk holding on as long as possible atop the meat, some mustard and garnish). This was fantastic and gone almost right away. The duck liver mousse was smooth, lightly sweet, of course very earthy, and came out with all the same accompaniments as the tartare, plus 2 dried fruits. It was gone as fast as we could eat it. The brussels sprouts with the steaks had great flavor, though I could have gone for cooking them a bit less. The caesar salads, though, holy cow--those were amazing. Huge real caesar flavors, great croutons and fresh lettuce. I never get tired of a salad like this with a steak like this. We had a couple cocktails, a glass of wine, a glass of beer, and then two more dinner orders (sandwiches and sides), plus tax and tip and barely topped $400 for 5 people total. Very reasonable, especially since we splurged on one of the fanciest steaks on the board. They've gone through some personnel changes in the ownership group and on the floor lately. Service was as fast and thoughtful as ever. Other than the fact that a couple of the new kids were sporting denim vests like some sort of steakhouse MC, you wouldn't even notice anything had changed. It's so, so good to see a wonderful favorite place survive lockdown and soldier on into the future. While there are large plates on the menu, The Shambles is one of my favorite restaurants for trying a little of everything. The steak tartare and charcuterie are must haves whenever I'm here. Everything is fresh and delicious. In my experience between 2 people, a small plate, 2 serving meat & cheese charcuterie, and one large plate to share = plenty of food. The large plates also come with a side. I've eaten in person and gotten takeout. Great service either way. They have some outdoor tables in the summer too. The huge bonus though, is they have their own parking lot! It's shared I believe, but hasn't been full whenever I've come by. read more
