Was charged over $6000 for a cross country move, which is reasonable, however, when you figure in extra expenses....and time off work due to their lack of communication.....it may not be a good value. We were to receive our container yesterday (7/29/23). I called in the morning to get an estimate of the time. Spent ~45 min on hold finally got someone on the phone who informed me container will arrive between 3pm-7pm. The driver will call 1 hour before. I hired 2 gentlemen to help (as we are 2 women, and I am almost 60 with back issues). It was getting to be 6:30, and no call. I attempted to call PackRat again numerous times, but was placed on the que each time. No call back. I finally checked my account on the website and saw the delivery date was changed to 7/30/23. No call, no email informing me. Tried calling again, placed on the que again for 2 hours. I called again but this time pressed buttons as a new customer and sure enough they picked up after 2 minutes on the que. The man Mitch who answered, stated there was not much he could do as he is not authorized in that department, but did obtain all our info and sent a message to several departments alerting them to the issue. He was receptive to our situation and finally got a call this morning from PackRat as a result of his email. Manuel, a supervisor, called to inform me the container was rescheduled to today.(this call was a response to Mitch's email) He stated there was nothing he could do about communication as that was the facility...(which is part of PackRat) not PackRat. I pointed out the fact that the facility is part of PackRat and I should have been contacted. Stating there was nothing PackRat could have done is simply Not True. Communication goes a long way and we would of avoided all the frustration and extra expenses on my part. On top of this, I was being charged $25 due to a change in pick up for the container. Initially scheduled drop off 7/29/23, and pick up 7/31/23. Mitch did change the date, as the container gets here today (7/30/23) at 6 or 7 pm, then PackRat wants to pick it up at 6am the next day. Mitch changed it to 8/5/23 pick up (thank you!). For all this, we still do not have our belongings...."scheduled" today ....8am to 10 pm delivery (currently noonish). Manuel stated he would remove some $ off of fuel charge, which doesn't even cover the cost of our movers. He then suggested I just reschedule them for Monday....(so take time off work, and try to schedule movers...as my workers had to go to their regular job) PackRat prides themselves on good customer service......no where close to anything good, when they could not even communicate a change in schedule. I'd like to comment on a 1800PackRat job that I observed at my neighbor's house. My neighbor English Knowles had 1800packrats move her furniture from California to Virginia. When the container arrived, the lift broke when they were unloading it, leaving it hanging in midair for 3 days. I witnessed this. Please see picture that I took. When they finally sent a mechanic and got the container on the ground (NOT GENTLY), several pieces of furniture were damaged. 1. The company will not honor the 50K insurance policy that they sold my neighbor. 2. They are not able to produce the insurance policy, even though she was billed for it. 3. No one is available to discuss. I am moving soon and will be using PODS. You should too. This company is not reputable and uses fraudulent business practices. read more

I wrote a review here a few days ago and it was deleted. I hired 1800PACKRAT for a cross country move. I bought their supplemental insurance, which was to insure my load for $50,000. When they arrived in Virginia, their hydraulic lift broke, leaving my container hanging, at an incline for 3 days. Finally a mechanic came who could fix it. The furniture shifted and several pieces of furniture were damaged when it finally landed on the ground. They have denied my claims, which were very reasonable (3K). I can't even give them one star. If I must to get this review published I will! We have been waiting almost a month to get our container picked up. I sure wish that I had read the reviews first. This is a terrible and unprofessional company to deal with. They are quick to charge me for my monthly rental when they won't even pick it up. We sure hope if we get it to our destination in Tennessee we have better luck. We are hoping that it is just Richmond that is so poorly run. But we are losing faith fast!!! read more

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY! This company has ruined my entire move. We were notified the day we closed on our brand new home in a new area that all of our belongings in one of the two 16ft containers we rented and stored at their Richmond facility had been accidentally auctioned off. The manger told us on the phone and in an email that the worker accidentally pulled the wrong container. We NEVER missed a payment. He promised to make it right. He asked us to send him everything we were out and a itemized list. We did plus pictures. They refunded us half of the money we paid for storage and promised the rest and didn't pay us. We've had to replace mattresses, dishes, towels, and couches for my family 7 including a baby. We didn't budget for this. After having to run them down for any answers we contacted a lawyer to see if they could help. PackRat then sent us to Vanliner Insurance who is basically saying it was negligence and per their horrible contract Pack Rat is not liable for negligence. You can't sue them for punitive damages and you can't have a jury trial. Their contract protects them everything but fraud and doing something illegal. So we are only due what we took out on protection insurance. I was prepared to maybe replace an item that was damaged but not a whole container with enough to furniture a 4 bedroom home. What they are offering will not replace what they sold. AND WE HAVE NOT HEARD FROM THEM AGAIN. It's been two months and we have been patient hoping they would fix this and now we know they won't. Your stuff would be safer in your front yard under a tarp. If you sign up over the phone like we did you won't see the contract until they mail you your packet. Their contract is horrible . Complete trash company. Avoid at all costs. Didn't pick my container up, marked it as picked up, charged me $2000 in a flagrant breach of contract. I was happy with everything up until they delivered my full container to the new address. I wasn't able to be there for the delivery, but they don't require you to be. I provided detailed written instructions for where I wanted the container placed and when the driver called in transit I went over everything again. Imagine my surprise when I arrived at the location later that day and found the container on the opposite side of the house from where it should be. Instead of having a 10-15' walk on flat ground into my basement (where everything was going to be stored), I had a 150' walk around the house and down a hill to get there. I called to ask them to return and place the container where I wanted but they refused. Putting it where I wanted required driving over a bit of grass and I was told it was at the driver's discretion whether to do it or not. When I'd spoken with the driver to give him directions he never told me that driving over the grass would be an issue. It's flat, solid ground and had he gotten out of his truck he would have seen that. So rather than being able to offload the container by myself, I had to spend $250 on a moving crew. The response from customer service was ridiculous and pretty much amounted to, "Oh well, nothing we can do". And while this part of the story wasn't a problem for me, it bears noting that when it was time to pick up my empty container they sent the driver to my old address. This was after I noticed online that they were scheduled to go there and I called in to correct them. The driver finally did come to the right place, but only after driving out of his way to the wrong location. When he came I asked him about the issue of the previous driver not delivering the container to the right spot. He chalked it up to the guy being too lazy to get out of his truck. He said when he has to drive over grass he gets out of the truck to walk on it and make sure it will support a heavy load, which the previous dude apparently couldn't be bothered with. Don't use these guys unless you have no other option. I should have stuck with PODS, which I've used several times in the past and was always happy with. I even had a POD driver deliver a container through a 2' snow drift once. I can pretty much guarantee that 1-800-packrat wouldn't do that. read more

If I could give this company 0 stars I would. Pod final picked up 11/15/21. Status online said on hold. Got charged for an extra month of storage. called 11/29/21 to let them know if the error. They refunded my money but because the bank had a hood on it, I had to wait for it to clear and was late on another bill. Was told the pod had not been moved out of their system as of that date. Got a past due notice 12/28 and called them again. Told them about it and asked if I had been charged for a lock. they confirmed I was charged for a lock but I never received one. Told me I would owe $76 when the pod was moved out for final pick up. I contested this because my agreement was for November and it was well past that date. Got charged the $76 12/30 but still no refund on the lock fee. Called and spoke to two agents. basically they don't care about sticking to dates that they originally agree to and only care about making a buck. Would not refund the $76 even though I was not told when it would come out if at all since I was waiting on a call back from Jessica. Every error that happened was on their end and I am the one suffering for it over a month later. They basically said you agreed to pay so we don't care. I agreed to pay in November not December. $76 may not be much to some but to others it's a make it or break it amount. read more

Communication is non-existent. There's no telling how much you'll actually have to pay because they'll just charge you whatever they want for the surcharge, which seems like thievery. When they schedule to return your pod, they don't give you a time so you can't plan to have anyone help you unload it. It's 10 pm and it's not here yet and despite 3 calls, there's no information to be given. Day 2, same experience. Incredibly unhelpful with no effort to even try to get answers. They also appear to respond to complaints and bad reviews online ONLY BECAUSE IT'S PUBLIC! Curious to see if that gets you sent further at all, but I highly doubt it. See how it goes when you simply try to call them for answers. I'm going to file a complaint with the DOJ in North Carolina and suggest everyone that has the same experience to do the same. This company shouldn't be allowed to operate this way and it should be investigated for poor business practices. So they have our stuff with no evidence that they'll actually deliver it to us, so they've essentially robbed us of our possessions and charged us thousands to do so. Twisted operation. They will make a situation what they want it to be, The company probably is OK if everything fits their perspective. They tore up my yard and refuse to fix it.
