Delicious diner food with a classic diner feel. We tried the Hillbilly Benedict and my son had the junior plate that was a nice sized meal. It had 3 pancakes, bacon and eggs. My son ate most of his meal and enjoyed every bite. My eggs benedict was so good, too. It had ham, bacon, the eggs and topped with white sausage gravy. I ordered fruit with my meal and was nicely surprised that it had apples, peaches, and pineapple (not just cantaloupe). We'll be back! read more

This is my favorite breakfast spot in the US. The açaí bowl is a can't-miss morning dish. It's like eating ice cream that's healthy with delicious, fresh sliced fruit on the top. Delish. My wife and I ate there for the first time on a business trip last month. We were looking for a breakfast place that had character and had fresh healthy ingredients. All our expectations were met at the 101 Diner. Whenever I'm the area it will be my breakfast stop. The menu has lots of choices and the portion size was just right. We loved this place! My wife and our friend and I went to the 101 Diner for breakfast for our trip to Encinitas and it was a fabulous place to be. There is out door seating and indoor seating. For the outdoor you can sit in the back on the patio or out front on the sidewalk to people watch. We sat on the side walk and had a great time observing our environment. Paiton was our waitress and she was phenomenal. She was very busy and was still very attentive to our table. She kept the coffee flowing and gave us recommendations on where to go next. The 101 Diner is small, broken up into two sides of the restaurant. The right side is bar seating with an open kitchen -- take a seat and watch the magic as they make food! The left side of the diner is comfy booth seating. If you want to sit outside, that's available too! Sidewalk seating just outside the diner is perfect if you want to watch the people stroll by. Chaos at this place! They have a moron standing at the hostess stand! You are suppose to put your name on a list, which shouldn't be that difficult to manage. Somehow the rude dumbass guy cant figure out which name comes first the one on top or the one on the bottom! So you can end up waiting for a long time while others that walk up get seated right away! Needs management! Went to Encinitas Cafe instead.. waaaay better service! And the menu options are better! As you can read from Scott S comment, very poorly managed! I love the old diner feel of this place with their delicious food and good service. We had a hiccup with our table as they skipped us while we were waiting. The person calling the name should call inside as well as outside. The service is always friendly and the food delicious. My complaint is that the restaurant is dirty and the furniture is old and worn. It is time to replace that old furniture. read more

It was a sunny Saturday in Mid February, though me being me kept referring to it as being August, you see coming from a place where you get maybe 6 days of GREAT days a year mainly in the summer I am still getting my head around the fact that actually the sunshine makes an appearance year round in these parts. After a lazy lie in hubby and I decided to take a drive to Encinitas for a wander and a brunch. Or should I say I drove us down to get practice- seriously people, keep off the roads during the evenings and weekends as I am practicing and not one road in San Diego county is safe! We had seen this place a few times and took a walk in, well, took a seat outside actually as it was far too nice to sit indoors. In fact we didnt even venture into the diner so I can't comment on the cleanliness of the restaurant or the restrooms (yes, restrooms I seem to judge a restaurant on- be aware people, keep your restrooms clean!). The server was friendly, presented us with a menu and both of us were well and truly overwhelmed. So many choices for breakfast, what to pick? Well, I cannot recall what hubby ordered, I was way too interested in my own stomach which was growling as it had been sometime since I had eaten. Eventually I picked, based on the server suggesting some of the specials. My meal of choice was the Chorizo scramble with hash browns, it came with tortilla, sour cream, guacamole and salsa. Like having fajitas for breakfast in a way. Loved the Chorizo scramble, the salsa was homemade and fresh. It was good! The hash browns were a little dry and so I really needed the glass of water which was provided. Though my actual drink of choice was a milkshake which was also good- they filled the glass and there was still enough in the metal container (I cannot recall right this second what the metal thing is called, my brain is fried from another sunny weekend!) for another full glass. This diner is the #1 breakfast spot in Encinitas! I have been going here for years and tried many things but the best thing on the menu is my go to breakfast order, half order of eggs Benedict and mini açaí bowl. There are many varieties of eggs Benedict to choose from, they have classic Canadian bacon or avocado and tomato Benedict but my absolute favorite is the Cardiff crack eggs Benedict with avocado and cilantro jalapeño Hollandaise sauce (made fresh everyday). I cannot tell you how mouthwatering and tender the Cardiff crack (special tri-tip) is. It simply melts in your mouth. The açaí bowl is also the best I have ever had. The consistency of the açaí is like a sherbet or sorbet rather than soupy. It is like a healthy breakfast sundae. Below the açaí is crispy hemp granola. The bowl is topped with fresh seasonal fruit such as banana, mango, kiwi, strawberries, blueberries and toasted coconut. This combo of sweet and savory is sure to knock your flip flops off. Other favorites are the chicken machaka omelette, raspberry chocolate chip pancakes and their coconut French toast with coconut syrup. That is just the breakfast! Their lunch deserves it's own review. Not only is their food first class but the staff are always warm and friendly. If tables fill up, sitting at the counter watching goodness getting created before you is always another good seating option. Quick service, great coffee, and good food... they have the basics down! We were thinking about going to the place across the street, but opted for this place for its many reviews. Been here twice now for breakfast. Had the Eggs Benedict both times. Not the best I've ever had, but right up there. The Ho-Made Hollandaise is perfectly emulsified with just a hint of lemon, Canadian Bacon is cut thick and the English Muffins had a great chew. The potatoes they come with are fluffy and tasty, if slightly under seasoned. I asked for them well done both times - once they came out with a super dark, crispy exterior and a cloud-like middle. Yum! The second time not as good as the first, but still pretty darned good. Servers are cute little surfer chicks. Very nice, laid back and friendly. Pretty quick on the food. My only beef with this place was that both times I went, they had Crab Cake Bennies on the Specials board...and both times were sold out. Great little diner for breakfast. read more

My husband and my experience at the 101 Diner was pretty decent. We went there on Sunday around 1:00pm. The place was pretty busy, but the wait was only about 15 minutes. The food is mediocre at best. I had American breakfast (bacon, eggs, potatoes) and my wife had a salad. She's pretty sure the salad made her sick, the ranch dressing was flavored with cilantro or something, and while my breakfast was fine it was definitely not anything more than a 3 star breakfast. There were weird people with a dog in a chair (specifically the chair from our table) so we were instructed to get out own chair from a pile to sit down. You're better off across the street for breakfast. Maybe other meals here are better, but there was nothing impressive about our experience. read more

The breakfast at the 101 Diner is out of this world good. There is generally always a line out the door. I've been here 3 times in the last three years, so finally decided to write a review. The Acai berry bowl is like 'healthy' ice cream surrounded by nuts, oats, and a bunch of other good stuff. it's also a very generous portion, so it will fill you up. The Eggs/bacon/hasbrowns/sausage are all very, very good. Some of the best breakfast items I have ever had. The eggs benedict specifically is awesome. Every breakfast place I visit I always get the eggs benedict first, as a litmus test for the quality I can expect. The hollandaise sauce is very rich, but not over poweringly-so. The english muffins were crisp and thick. I'm always right in line for the place when I visit CA. A must if you are visiting, and an obvious choice if you already live here. Casual diner with great food and friendly service. We waited about 10 minutes for a table. Inside was a bit warm (no AC) and some of the outside tables were in the sun. But ... there's a secret patio in the back. We lucked out and got a shady spot there and it was perfect. The menu was very enticing so we split 2 entrees. First, crab cakes Benedict. This might be my favorite breakfast ever. Deliciously different Benedict with a not too spicy jalapeño hollandaise, perfectly poached egg and a really good crab cake. We got it with potatoes. Our second entree was the baked apple pancake, a specialty of the house. It takes a little longer to bake but so totally worth it! Crispy, sugary edges. Soft custardy middle. Baked apples throughout.
