Don't believe I've ever eaten dinner in a former prison! Except for the bars over the windows in the small entry room, nothing today resembles a former house of incarceration. The small room opens in the back to a spacious patio with seating on two levels. A "tiki" fountain and lots of greenery add to the romantic atmosphere. Our server was spot-on in his role, knowledgeable and friendly. Each person in our party ordered a different entree, yet we all shared an appetizer with baked Brie, 1/2 bulb of warmed garlic cloves with crackers and jam. I enjoyed the fish and chips although they both were a tad on the dry side. The battered fish sticks were drizzled with a lemony aioli, and the yucca fries also were battered. I dipped them in ketchup to add moisture.

O my goodness! If you're ever in Saint Croix you HAVE to stop at 1756! The menu has a wide variety of food and the STX sangria is the most beautiful sangria ever! My wife and I are good snobs from Chicago and we are absolutely foodies (that's how I got my chunky shape, yall), and when I say this food was out of this world, believe me! The prices are also amazing for what you get. The owner is super approachable and has the fun blunt hey York type of vibe that makes the restaurant that much more lively. You can also tell the cooks and waiters don't mind being there and actually believe in what they serve on their plates! Try it! And if you're disappointed, tell them that Kylie Bronas sent you!

We could not stop there as we went for the plantain foster and what a way to end a special and delicious meal.

We sat at a high top in front of the bar and were greeted immediately. I had the espresso martini and it was sweet and frothy and garnished with shredded chocolate bits. It was the perfect dessert drink. Trevor answered some questions we had about the island and was prompt and pleasant through checkout. Wished we could've gotten over there a few more times during our trip.

Lavish details, from the…read morebrass lion heads on the doors, to the glow of a copper diving helmet, to the puffer-fish lamps and gilded menu, create a cozy atmosphere reminiscent of a shipwreck. Once your eyes have adjusted, you can start reading the truly extensive cocktail menu. There are both classic tiki and newer creations available, and during happy hour, some of the simpler drinks (like Mai Tais) are discounted. If you are new to tiki, you might get frustrated with some of the service times, but each drink can be so complex, they take a little longer than your average rail to make (but it's worth it for the layered flavors). Breaker's Roar is my favorite bar in Christiansted, and it is great either as a first drink of the night spot, or as a final hurrah. I have never had a bad drink from them, and I don't even have a favorite, everything I have tried is so delicious. Each drink also comes in a carefully selected vessel, and that id definitely part of the equation in placing an order. The last time we went, there was also a small bites menu that was a pleasant surprise. We liked the two plates we tried, but already had dinner reservations. Next time we go back, we plan to eat a full meal. This place is a must if you are on the boardwalk!

The food. MEH. I love carpaccio but this was underwhelming and didn't have enough acidity to balance the plate. I ordered the lobster pasta. Wow -what a disappointment. The lobster was over cooked and chewy. The sauce (bisque) was flavorless and needed salt and a bit of heavy cream badly. The pasta was way past al dente. Had to ask for bread- was told "had to see if they had enough for a side of bread." Ran out of risotto for a 730 pm reservation. Offered two specials but I had to ask the price. (Pet peeve--tell me the special price). And then the server wasn't sure and had to go ask. Go only for the location and view --not the food. The mocktails were both delicious. Points for having a mocktail list!

It took 15 minutes to get water, the staff seemed disorganized despite only three tables, and we were repeatedly rushed to order because the kitchen was "closing." The food did not justify the high prices. A $60-$70 filet mignon was completely unseasoned and bland, with minimal sides. While the mussel appetizer tasted good, the broth was full of broken shells, making it unpleasant and unsafe to eat. Drink service was also poor: a second glass of wine was served in a small cup and spilled during a refill without any acknowledgment. Portions were inconsistent, and the overall experience felt careless. One dish, the grilled mahi mahi, was well seasoned and tasted good, but at $40 it felt overpriced for a common fish and came with overcooked, unappealing sides. Overall, the meal was not worth the cost.
