We sat at the bar and they had a really fun classic rock band playing in the main room. The band was called Bittersweet. Food was awesome and the uncorked Pennsylvania Chardonnay was surprisingly good. If I wasn't going home carryon I would have purchased a bottle to take home. My wife and I went for our anniversary. Arrived around 6:30 Pm. We were immediately seated (Was not overly full at this point.). We ordered food and drinks moments later. Our Iced tea and soda were brought promptly. Around 7:30 we decided we were not waiting especially after witnessing several parties get their food (some of which were the same menu items we ordered). We contacted the waiter and told him to cancel the order and give us a bill for the tea and soda. He stated he had to get a manager for assistance. He billed us for the tea and soda, which I thought showed a less than stellar amount of business integrity. The waiter then approached us. He stated the food was now ready and could bag it up for take out. We declined at this point. When paying the bill the owner came out and was raising his voice to me and my wife using an "unfriendly" "tough guy tone". No apology for the wait. No taking ownership of mistakes or oversights made. Offered many excuses about how they are so busy in an irritated and disrespectful tone (It wasn't super busy when we arrived and placed our order.) We paid our $6.00 bill and thanked the owner and went on our way. The place was renovated years ago from an old 5&10, I frequented as a kid. It is a lovely looking place. The wait staff we dealt with were friendly and personable. I can not comment on the food, we did not get any. My unsweetened tea was fine and my wife did not seem to disapprove of her soda. Due to the owner's handling of the situation, his lack of integrity and the attitude of your just a customer. I cannot recommend 1787. Please try it out for yourself. I met a family member here for their Thursday night trivia. I will say the grilled shrimp tacos with the horseradish sauce were excellent. I had their Blue arocks IPA, which was very smooth, not overly hazy, and just the right pairing with those tacos. My Family member had a fish sandwich with one of the largest pieces of fish I've ever seen on a sandwich. The trivia was well handled and the place was packed by 7 PM. I will say the service was a little slow, but they definitely appeared shorthanded. Luckily we were in no rush so it wasn't a big deal but if you are in a rush, you might want to plan ahead. It's a nice place, the server Kayla was very friendly, the food was tasty and the beers were good. We've stopped a few times over the last couple years and I'm pretty sure the tap list has barely changed. Not a big deal if all your beers are stellar examples of the style, but when they are mediocre at best you should at least try something new. The IPAs we tried were brown and murky and tasted like cardboard. Heavily oxidized. So either very old or very poorly handled. The food was much much better a few years ago. We actually drove up to Hamburg to get takeout during covid. Now...bland and uninspired. The service is hit or miss. Sometimes we got a bartender who was pleasant and quick to get our drinks, other times we'd have a very unpleasant woman who made us feel like it was a burden to tap a beer. We were traveling with the dog and so I called ahead to see if it was OK to sit outside with a dog. They said of course! When we arrived, it was rather warm, but they had fans blowing nicely and there was plenty of space out on the patio. We ordered three different kinds of smash burgers, french fries, and fried cheese curds. Of the three categories, the cheese curds were probably the best. The burgers were solid, not bad, but not something to get very excited about. I was pleased, though, that the meat was not over cooked! I had The come back burger. But wished I had tried the all American. The fries were fine, they were a little over cooked. Yes we're getting picky here ;-). The service was excellent. Our server look like she had a lot of tables and managed to stay very friendly and even fawned all over our dog. The other patrons were also friendly. It makes a big difference when you stop in a small town and feel welcomed. We sure did. As we were driving on the highway, we did not sample a lot of the beers; however, they had a very good selection, and fortunately for us, at a variety of glass sizes. They even had one as small as 5 ounces. It was actually the glass they use for their tasting flights. But it was perfect to have a taste rather than a giant glass of beer. When we arrived we had a short wait but were seated within 15 minutes. Our server came to our table quickly and asked about our tastes for beer and when we said we were going to each get a flight offered suggestions that met both of our tastes (I'm more of a hophead and she likes the lighter stuff to lagers). The beer is of good quality with a couple standout brews. On to the food, they have a limited menu which can be a great thing. Theydon't have a grill but an oven they make their burgers in. They only come cooked one way and the one I had was bland but had a great cheese on it which made up for the lack of seasoning on the actual burger for the most part. The tater tots I ordered as an appetizer were honestly the best thing out of everything we ordered. They were crispy and the toppings were on point. If your looking for a good meal in the area with good craft beer this is a solid choice. I will return to see what they do with their menu as it seems to be ever changing from what the staff told us. Stopped in last Sunday for a late lunch and had one of the most incredible wraps ever. The chicken was perfect pair with feta and olives it had a wonderful Greek flavor but with and interesting pesto that made it a home run. They have also added a new sour that contains an insane amount of blackberries which was probably the best sour I've tasted or at least a very close second. Nice decor and atmosphere, good food and just OK beer. That about sums it up. I really wanted to love this place because of the decor: from the open-air fire pit up front and wood and stone motif throughout, but everything else fell a little short. The beers were a little weak and flat, most of the similar beers tasted too similar to each other (the IPS tasted alike, the stouts tasted alike, etc., not enough difference to distinguish them). Most of them tasted a bit flat as well. Im going to chalk this up to being a young brewery, only open for several months at the time we visited. Hopefully this will improve over time, as ive heard this same complaint from a number of people that went there for the first time. The food was pretty good, slightly better than typical bar food, which it should be for a brewery. The note on the menu for the burgers almost stopped me from ordering one, as i like medium rare, but the burger came out better and less cooked that well :"~ALL BURGERS ARE COOKED JUICY AND WELL-DONE by our patented UNOX machine." The pretzel was really good too. Street parking is limited and can be tight, especially on the weekends. We plan on going back after a few more months to see if this place has aged and matured a bit. If the beer gets better, this place will surely be a winner, especially for the area. Nice local brewery with a warm ambiance and friendly service. I ordered a beer flight and was happy with the price- $10 for 4 beers. They had a nice selection of styles to choose from. They give you list and number your flight so you know what you're drinking. I like this as it helps you keep track. I liked the Fern Shully IPA best as I thought it had the most flavor. My brother liked the hot pepper ale, although we both agreed it wasn't actually spicy. We didn't have dinner here, just beer. I did order a creme brûlée, though, as that's my weakness in life. The dessert was very nicely done and the fruit was super fresh and added a nice sweetness. Our server was awesome and was attentive the whole 2ish hours that we sat and sampled. We ended up here on a busy festival day, so I can't really review the quality of the bar experience but I can review the beers.... the mango wheat has no mango flavoring, just a rough skins of fruit gone bad taste. The Hot Pepper pale ale needs to be an ipa so the finishing taste isnt gross. The Fern Suller IPA hasnt developed any hops. But I did like the stout-bitter chocolate and coffee grounds. Excellent service, beer for every taste, good food and great ambiance. We dined in the "alley" next to the brewery due to Covid. I had the cranberry wheat and the blackberry sour beer. Both were very good, fruity and just as described. We had the fried chicken tacos, the classic burger, and the BLT wedge salad. Everything was well prepared, tasty, and large portions. We stopped here one night in the way up to visit my in laws and I'm so glad we did. This brewery is a little oasis in the heart of Hamburg. Great beer selection with some cool names. The atmosphere is friendly and has a great old bar feel with a new clean look. The food may not be high class but it is definitely good. I personally loved the pretzel with two sauces. One sauce being their own house made beer cheese. Which was absolutely delicious and you can actually taste the beer. I am really impressed with this location. We usually go into Wyomissing or West Reading and was looking for something different and on 61 saw their billboard. Glad we did. Immediately noticed how clean the entire facility was followed by how friendly the entire staff was. The drinks and food were really good. Simple menu with variations but it is done right. I showed up a few minutes after they opened and my bf and I were the only ones in the brewery for a little bit. The bartender was soo friendly and knew so much about the history of the brewing company, the beer, he gave us all his recommendations, told us the crowd favorites, and it was a great experience!!! June 14, 2019. My friend and I came here on a Friday night, sort of late, around 9:45. Fortunately, the kitchen was still open. I had the mushroom and swiss burger, he had loaded tater tots with pulled pork on top. Both items very good. Be aware the mushroom burger has curried onions. Some of you may not like curry. Mushrooms were good, but it didn't seem to have enough swiss cheese. Still, tasty. And at the time of my visit, you can only get your burger prepared one way - medium well. They don't have a regular grill and they cook them in some type of oven. A convection oven I suspect. The server told us about this ahead of time. The burger was indeed medium well, no pink, but still very juicy. No complaints. Beer was good. The place looks small from the front but this place is actually quite large and it extends far into the back. Very deep. There is a small outside area but it's right on 4th street so maybe that could be loud when there's a lot of traffic. I suspect when this place is full that it's very noisy inside. Lots of concrete floors, all very open, high ceilings. Looks nice and it's not very bright, which is a big plus for me. Good service. Good food and beer. Clean bathrooms. One thing to note. A pet peeve of mine. When a server is assigned to my table I would prefer the server be the one who takes my order AND delivers the food. I know, I know.. the management would tell me that they do this to ensure the best dining experience or the freshest food, or some other version of the same, but that's BS. We're not talking about souffle here. We're talking burgers. An extra minute would be fine to wait to get my server to deliver the food. read more

Micro brew restaurant. Our server was very cordial. We opted for one of their burgers and fries along with a couple of their beers and a mixed drink. All were tasty. The interior of the establishment is an open design with a 2 story view of the brewery area in the rear. A lot of wood and brick makes the atmosphere comfortable and casual. Hit up this brewery yesterday and was not disappointed! Parking is on the street and at a premium..get your parallel parking skills ready! Im honestly not sure if there is a lot behind the building or not. Upon entering there is a nice large bar with two tables up front and then a few high tops along the wall. We were greated by a hostess asking if we wanted to sit up front or in the back. We chose the back. The place is a lot bigger than you think. We headed to the back room where there are plenty of tables, the brew tanks are down in the floor and there was an additional bar in the back that wasnt open. Service was prompt and friendly. Our waitress has mo issues giving us plenty of time to look over the beer and food menus. Flights of 4 beers are 10 bucks. We aldo ordered a big charcuterie board, glatbread and pork tater tots. The charcuterie board would please anyone (no weird stinky cheese or funky meat) the grapes were divine!! If you are looking for super fancy this isnt it but I liked it. My fiance inhaled his flatbread. The tots were an abundant helping for the small order..i can't imagine what a large is! Extra bbq sauce was provided on the table which we used...it was delicious!!! The beers were also good and drinkable. A little something for everyone here. Ipas were not overly bitter, the apple jack beer had a tad too much spice for me . The building is super cool and well renovated, make sure to read the paper on the table about the history! The place is comfortable and unpretentious. Where to begin? We called ahead and asked if they could seat 20. They said yes. We got there and told us we had to sit separately. And then they told us that because we were a large party they couldn't split the check. We had to get 1 big check. ....but we didn't get to sit together so....why couldn't you split the checks?? Musician was way way way way way too loud. We couldn't hear ourselves think. We couldn't hear the wait staff or each other. We had no hope of conversation...(which is why we all went out to eat together). We were screaming and then gave up and spend the evening sending texts to each other. The drinks and food didn't come out at the same time. My vodka & tonic was mostly tonic. The giant pretzel was served with a tablespoon of mustard and a tablespoon of cheese. Not enough to use for the whole pretzel. I asked for a to go box 3 times before we got one. And after the waiter gave us the bill we have to get his attention after about 15 minutes to come get the payment. And then he told us we needed to leave because they were closing. Was a bit chilly inside albeit on a frigid day outside. Service was fine. Definitely worth the drive up 61. For comparison, we'd choose 1787 over Lancaster Brewing every time. We frequently travel from Maryland to NJ and needed a halfway place to meet family. This restaurant would have been perfect. I called when they opened to see if they had outdoor seating and if they allowed dogs. The woman said yes, so we arrived shortly after with our dog. At that point the very small patio was full, but a party of 6 was finishing up. We asked to sit there and were told that they had decided to close the patio because there were storms expected. Mind you, the sun was still shining and the weather apps showed no storms until 6pm. They still refused to seat us outside, even when I told them we came from a distance. There was even a party of two still sitting outside who hadn't received their food yet. The staff wouldn't reconsider. So, my family went in while my dog and I sat on the steps next door. My husband ate and then came out to stay with the dog so I could eat. We were there for 1.5 hours and the weather was beautiful the entire time. The kicker was that as soon as we walked out, the staff, not realizing that we were still next door talking, reopened the patio. Unbelievable. At least wait to make sure we're not still there. Overall, the beer and food was so-so. I will even say that one waitress came out and offered my dog water and another came out offering me a drink. But frankly, management really needs to rethink their outdoor policy. Their unwillingness to allow us to sit at the patio when it was clearly beautiful out was a deal breaker. Not to mention opening it back up the minute we left. Truly stupid. We won't be back. Of course, the restaurant probably doesn't care.
