I was visiting Newport News and was trying to find a brunch spot for myself and my partner. I stumbled upon 185, and was shocked to find a restaurant with an average 5 star review on Yelp that was ranked #87 on Yelp's 2023 top 100 in POQUOSON of all places!! This is a teeny tiny restaurant, so get there early or expect a wait! They don't serve their fried items until 11 am- so we got there about 10:50 and waited about 20 minutes for a table. If you check in on yelp, you get a free iced coffee! The coffee was just ok, and tasted very "fake," if that makes sense. Like artificial vanilla flavoring, like the mini cups of creamer you see at old school diners. Our service was just meh, with our waitress not really checking in on us. When our food was served after waiting over 30 minutes, our waitress didn't come by until we were almost done. We had to ask someone else passing by for napkins. I had the BLT, which had what was advertised as avocado but was really guacamole. I tend to love avocado and guacamole but I really didn't love the taste of it with everything else- it tasted store bought and not homemade. There was also some fried chicken, but it wasn't plump fat pieces of chicken, but instead thin crispy bits. It was very crumbly- definitely a fork/knife situation. The biscuit was good. I got the cheese grits as a side and they were phenomenal- cheesy, creamy, and the perfect texture. I had a bite of my husband's sweet heat biscuit-wich which was absolutely excellent and really blew my meal out of the water. It was on a sweet potato biscuit, which was fun and different. Overall, I do think this is a cute spot but it was not a 5 star experience. I will definitely be returning on a less busy day, and will order something else off the menu! read more

Read another post that mentioned reservations...they don't take them but they serve food pretty quickly so it moves fast. Such a quaint restaurant in a quaint town! First time in Puquoson and am loving the vibe. And of course 185! Ambience is great like most diners where staff greet you, tell you with a smile how long of a wait, gives you a pager to beep you when seating is available. It didn't take long to get a seat, what's great is that though seating is limited, they don't squeeze you in a little corner just because you're a party of one. The decor is cute: clock, map, glass mermaid artwork - all very coastal. As people leave there's a very efficient gentleman spraying the tables clean, ready for the next customers. Tables have fresh flowers, not typical of diners, nice touch! As for the food selection, I was eyeing their popular brisket omelette and shrimp grits. I was informed during weekends their brisket comes with scramble and not omelette (bummer, why not?) but I quickly recovered from my grief when the waitress told me their shrimp and grits are delicious. Do I agree? Let's see: (right amount of) cheesy grits, good amount of andouille sausage 5 plump large and perfectly cooked shrimp bits of red bell pepper diced, corn and sprinkle of scallion! Delicious! What can top all that? When you check in, you get free iced coffee. They ran out of caramel which was my first choice but was quickly told cold cream is good - glad I went with the suggestion! Oh and when you think all of that isn't enough, I was asked if I'd like to try a bit of the brisket (since I didn't order because they didn't offer omelette with it) - the brisket was served with sweet chipotle sauce (the usual)... out of this world, off the charts, divinely delicious!!! This sauce needs to be bottled and sold everywhere! Everybody should come and dine at 185! Worth the drive...THANK YOU for the hospitality, and great service ! P.s. a funny anecdote to cap off my visit - everyone was soooo friendly, told me about their upcoming Valentine's Day multiple course dinner (check out their FB page!) - I got lost with all the warmth and subconsciously wanted more probably - that I walked out with a bag of takeout order! This quaint place is so awesome! The food is delicious, and the service is great as well. When I got there, they had to make a fresh pot of coffee, which I appreciated. Some places will just give you old coffee, and the coffee was worth the wait. The mimosa was good also. So let's talk about this pancake, it was light and fluffy. The eggs were cooked perfectly. I like mine over well/fried hard. The seared salmon was scrumptious - it was cooked in white wine, butter, and topped with capers; I think I tasted some lemon too. Stopped here for the first time yesterday! This quaint little place had such a warm hometown feeling. We had Dolly as our server and she was fantastic. I've only been here a few times but the food is amazing each time! You literally can't go wrong ordering anything on their menu. The service is always great as well. The people working here are some of the friendliest people I've ever met at a restaurant. The seating area is relatively small so it can get kinda packed in during the busiest times of the day but it's still comfortable. Came to a brunch date with my sister. The only downside I have was the tone of the hostess because she just seemed rude or overwhelmed. Otherwise everything was good as usual- I got the 185 plate and it was so filling, fresh and hot. I got the tropical mimosa and it was excellent. My sister loved her hangover plate she said she would definitely be back to have 185 again. The decor was cute, we sat in rocking chairs waiting, and they were comfy. It was an hour wait so I would say don't go on rainy days bc they will not let you sit outside even though at the time it didn't rain. It's a neighborhood favorite! When I'm visiting a different area, YELP is always my go to for finding that perfect meal. While looking for breakfast options, 185 seems to have its share of great reviews for breakfast and brunch options, and the food pictures also seemed scrumptious. This hidden gem was just that. Small, but great ambiance and good customer service. The food was as expected.. yummy! I had the 185 breakfast special with French toast, potatoes and bacon. Although I do like my bacon a little extra crispy, forgot to ask. Some of the potatoes were a little tough, but overall great taste. Good doesn't start to describe this place. The only word that comes to mind is AMAZING. I was traveling through the area and this place was suggested by a local. As a semi-pro chef, sadly i have become somewhat of food snob. Most restaurants i go to I look at the meal and think.....I could cook better than this. Not the case at 185. I ask the waitress for something unusual that I cannot get anything else. She suggested the fried chicken skin BLT biscuit. I'm like......ok? Wow. Food came quick, fresh hot and delicious. I found this gem of a place on Yelp and it already had some seriously good reviews and a 2021 Yelp award of the year. Nestled in the beautiful town of Poquoson Virginia, 185 is a small Breakfast and Lunch restaurant. On arrival, we notice the uniqueness of the building. The outdoor seating was available and some comfy chairs out front. Inside is just the right size. The Hostess and our server directed us to a nice comfortable seat along the wall. She then came out and took our drink order. I had coffee and water and the wife had orange juice and water. The coffee, to be brewed from a coffee brewer was very good. The menu options were plentiful. A full upscale breakfast and lunch menu. Everything seems to be kissed with a touch of perfection but not leaving out that "just like my momma use to make it" taste. Food is not too much or too little. I saw nothing unpleasant on the menu. The Staff is the GREATEST! They go beyond just taking your order and bringing you your food. No, they go out of their way to talk to you when they can. One of the co-owners came out and welcomed my wife and me, and talked to us a bit about our day and the restaurant. They were nice. Remember, this is a small "mom and pops" place, so seating and parking can be limited when busy. But I'm sure if you call ahead and ask the status, they'll be more than happy to let you know. Country Sausage-Bacon Pepper Gravy - came with an angle biscuit; the gravy was thick and creamy, and savory with the chunks of sausage; the biscuit was more on the dense/dough-y side, which I liked; this came with a side of fries or 'smash-browns' (aka, homefries), which we opted for the latter +a Breakfast Burrito - flour tortilla filled with sausage, onions, peppers, smash-browns, and cheese, served with a side of salsa; the hubs enjoyed this healthy version of a breakfast burrito; it was seasoned well, so even hot sauce or salsa was not needed +Shrimp and Grits - Creole cheese grits topped with blackened shrimp, andouille sausage, peppers, and onions; the shrimp was absolutely delicious - perfect version of blackened shrimp; this was juicy and addicting! I love supporting local spots and this is a good one. They are always adding new things to their menu so always something to try. I always go to my favorite the sweet heat chicken biscuit! It is a very small restaurant so seating is limited, they do offer indoor and out but it fills up quick and stays busy. I live close by so pickup is my favorite option.
