Mixed pakora, veggie samosa, butter chicken, dal tadka, paneer makhani, rice, and butter naan
    Andie R.

On a return trip from the coast, we found this fabulous new-to-us place via Yelp. It was lucky we were out because, previously, searching from home, 185th & Indian did not show up in the results, so hooray for being out and about and discovering them! This was our first family Indian food since we moved here from the East Bay. We loved our family favorite in Livermore and had been eating there for over 25 years, so we have been circumspect about finding a new place. 185th & Indian not only filled our stomachs with delicious food but also our hearts with joy, having found what could be our new family favorite for years to come. The restaurant is inviting and cozy. We look forward to dining in next time, but we ordered to go since we had our dogs with us and they needed their dinner after a long day running at the beach. :) For our maiden order, we chose butter chicken (a family favorite), veggie samosas, mixed pakora, dal tadka (hubby's fave is dal makhani), paneer makhani, rice, and naan. The guy who took our order asked us about our spice level. We were going to go medium, but he asked when we last had Indian food, and we said about 6 months (OMG, SIX MONTHS?! I'm not sure how we survived). He recommended we go mild this time. We took that guidance and had the most delightful meal. Everything was incredibly flavorful. The mixed pakora were the best I've had, and the butter chicken was like coming home. We look forward to many more meals from 185th & Indian

Service: 7/10 nice people, we got it to go and they were very kind. Ambiance: 4/10 it's a bit stale. No decor. Food: 6/10 Garlic naan: 7/10 very garlicy and nice texture Tikka Masala: 5/10 the thickness was spot on (not watered down). flavor was unique bc of bell peppers. Didn't love that flavor combo as it's a bit overpowering. There was also whole pieces of onion which obviously went well. One of the onion pieces were chewy (bc it was likely an outer part of the onion that shouldn't have gone in there). But the sadest part that while there was a good amount of chicken, it was unfortunately overcooked. All in all, I think the people working there are kind. But I would go back to try new things but I wouldn't choose this place for Tikka Masala.

Needed a warm butter chicken on a cold winters night. This restaurant has great reviews! The atmosphere and ambiance is nothing special, and I was particularly turned off by the super strong cleaning spray used while we were eating. The service was a bit spotty, they never got us more lukewarm water. But if you can just ignore all that (and you can), then stay for the delicious food. The garlic Naan was perfectly cooked with butter and garlic, the fun appetizer of punugulu was so tasty... fried fritters with dipping sauces. One yogurt based and one more spicy. The butter chicken was spicy and amazing! Pro tip, we ordered mild and it's still spicy, so if you can't handle any heat let them know. Choose the layered Konaseema chicken biriyani dish. It was stuffed full and delicious and Nicky nicely flavored. The chai and samosa appetizer was good but the samosa was stuffed with pickled veggies that were not great. The chai was amazing! Bottom line, ignore the atmosphere and stay for the amazing food!

Hands down best butter chicken around town. Consistently great flavorful food. Good service. The naan is also top tier and the korma! Our favorite Indian place for sure. We just keep coming back for more. Keep it up

This was a great experience visiting 185th and Indian!! I was horrible and showed up 30 minutes before closing and was offered a table and was very grateful after a long day.. We really enjoyed our Tikka masala and Veggie Samosas was even checked on to make sure the music wasnt too loud and then provided with a free Mango Lassi which was delicious! So full writing this review, terrible photo but AMAZING food!

Surprisingly, we got a text after ten minutes that our order was ready. Since we were close by, we went to get our food. The staff told us they needed 2 more minutes and then our food would be ready. Got our food and took it home to eat. The food: Samosas - we were expecting two large samosas, but this came in three smaller portions. Instead of a thicker cracker like exterior, these were more like a fried spring roll wrapper. These were served with a healthy amount of mint chutney. I thought these were fantastic and would have ordered more had I known how snackable they were. Butter chicken pizza - a good sized pizza with a ton of toppings. The pizza slices weren't cut that well, so we had to reslice it. When we picked up a slice to eat, the pizza flopped and half the cheese and toppings fell off. The flavor was good but I didn't think it was anything like butter chicken. Might pass for tandoori chicken. This pizza needed a couple more minutes in the oven to firm up the crust and the toppings (barely melted cheese). I feel like this order was rushed due to our early arrival and their automated messaging system. I ate a few slices reheated in the toaster oven and it actually tasted better as leftovers than the day of - better crust and had some bubbly cheese instead of barely melted cheese. Recommend the samosas and would be willing to try the pizza again. It could have been a rushed order, but it could partly be due to take-home pizza not being as good.

Since it was delivery I can't really speak to the service or the vibes, but I'm sure we'll dine-in one day, considering how much we enjoyed the food delivered. My wife and I both got the butter chicken pizza and I was surprised as to how well the flavors transferred. I suppose there is some sense to it since you typically have butter chicken with something like naan? So this is sort of like a different take on "bread" with "curry". My only note is that the pizza tasted a little sweeter than I would expect for a butter chicken and we weren't given any options for spice level which would've been nice. It can also be a lot of the same flavor, but realistically it is a butter chicken pizza so there's not much to be added here.

It was empty on a Tuesday around lunch time but we were greeted warmly by who I assumed were the owners. The decor is fun, vibrant, and colorful in the small space. They are also popular with takeout and delivery. I actually really enjoyed my Lamb Vindaloo Tacos! The lamb was tender and it did have a good amount of spice. My friend and I both thought the Dirty Chicken Masala Fries and her regular Chicken Tikka Masala could have had more flavor. BUT with that said, my leftovers tasted better the next day! The shop was quiet with some customers picking up to go orders. We went to the counter and ordered two non-veg (chicken) thali plates, a mango lassi and a chai masala. I also asked to confirm that they don't have their buffet anymore. While we were waiting, we noticed that most of the tables were dirty with food smudges and left over trash presumably from the day before since it had just opened. I tried to clean our table with paper napkins and water with little effect. So we decided to just deal with it. My husband went to the restroom to wash his hands and told me the restroom was in need of cleaning as well. As our food came. We noticed the sides on the thali plates were different too. They used to have two side dishes with cucumber, tomato, onion and crackers. The new plates were more plain, not bad, but not the same variety. The food tasted pretty good, I noticed the curries were spicer as well. That makes us wonder if there was a change of ownership/management once Desi Bites moved. It's such a shame the Desi Bites we remembered is gone..

Seriously, for the price of your average food cart entree these days, you can have an all-you-can-eat, high-quality, high-variety lunch. And this restaurant doesn't just churn out the basic stuff, either. You might get a bhindi masala, or goat biryani, along with some of the more typical plates like butter chicken. They mix it up, which is the sign of a great buffet. Honestly, they do something truly special with their tandoori chicken. I'm normally pretty lukewarm on that entree, but Vanakkam's version is a really sensational one. Samosas, Naan, Raita, etc. all available too. I read somewhere that this little Indian eatery is the most Indian of Indian restaurants in Portland. That made me eager to try it. The space is half restaurant, where you walk up to the counter to order, and half Indian grocery. In between they have a large case with chat (snacks) and sweets (every kind of Indian sweet you can imagine) as well as fancy looking slices of cakes and pastries. This isn't your average Indian restaurant with sitar music, fancy decor and high prices. This is where to go with a family, or a casual meal with great prices and generous portions. Food is served on paper plates on plastic trays and you bus your own table. The first thing we had while waiting for our food was mango lassi. Wow! I've consumed (and made at home) many of those but these were some of the best! Perfect amount of mango and the consistency was great! Loved it! My husband was starving so he chose a bun filled with chicken from the case. It was tasty. I don't know what it's called. I wanted a masala dosa though. They have quite a few kinds on the menu. Working and traveling in India I never came across so many kinds. I opted for a Mysore Masala Dosa. The helpful woman behind the counter explained they have more flavorful spices added to this kind of dosa. My husband ordered the goat korma, which was on a little daily special sign on the counter. My dosa came out fairly quickly. I don't think I've ever had a larger one! See my photo! There was ample potato filling inside as well. Soft and delicious with onion, peas & carrots, like it's supposed to. The Mysore spice was ok but just heavily sprinkled on inside the dosa which made it a little dry. Sambar always comes with dosas-a beautiful tasting soup. I wished they were more generous with that. They only gave me a tiny cupful. Green & red chutneys came with it too. They were fine but not that amazing. My husband's goat curry took a long time to arrive! I was halfway or more through my giant dosa before it was finally ready. I didn't try it and also forgot to take a photo. Sorry. He said it was flavorful and the meat was tender. As in most traditional Indian goat curries, there were small bits of bone and also some significant pieces of fat. But the portion was generous and lots of rice came alongside it too. He took some of both home. We were too full for sweets, but I did a little shopping in the store after. Here's a little tip for you: Don't buy spices (of most kinds) at the supermarket. Buy them at an Indian store-they are always a great deal. I bought whole peppercorns for my pepper mill for a great price (Sorry Penzy's) and some others. But I felt like I struck it rich finding mango Shrikand in the freezer case! Woohoo! We used to eat that at a restaurant when we lived in Pune, India. We took it home with us. I had to knock off a star because our food wasn't ready at the same time. Bummer. I'd give it 4 1/2 if I could. I can see where some would mark them down because it isn't fancy, but this little place made me happy and I want to go back for more.
