Good Food This was our second time at 188 Bakery Cuchifrito's. The food is delicious and they have plenty of choices.Had the Papa rellena, alcapuria, pastelillo, and pasteles . I live right around the corner basically. Anytime I don't wanna cook I come here. It's not the best but its what you'd expect. The pasteles are hit or miss I feel, jugos are ok, I like the soups. They have many things here it gets crowded real fast and you kinda should have an idea of what you want. I go at a certain time because some of the servers aren't cheap with the meat. Saw the show with Bourdain...been here twice...seating is a challenge but the food is freakin awesome...you can take the B,D train to 188th st or the 4 train to Fordam Rd...the restaurant is in between the two train lines...near the grand concourse...oh if you are looking for a bathroom go the Marshal's on the second floor..that's the only place I know where you can use. read more

Worst place ever!!! The health department should really visit this place on a weekly basis because I've been there twice with my boyfriend and we both got sick so bad to our stomachs. The first time my boyfriend felt sick after he had the steak with onions which I did not have I had the chivo/goat...last night we went again and my boyfriend woke up a few hours later with nonstop vomiting and diarrhea. This can't be a coincidence since as soon as I got home from this place I went straight to the bathroom and had diarrhea also. So, what's the deal with this greasy cuchifrito joint? It is quintessential Puerto Rican food. You do not get better falvorful, heart clogging, artery inducing food. Starting from the alcapurrias, to the Mofongo and their incredible asopao, it's a throw back to a place in time. Cuchifrito joints like these have become as rare as oxtails and patitas in a bean stew. Its a cultural relic that must be preserved. So, if you find yourself near and around Fordham Road, pay tribute to this restaurant and order yourself a healthy serving of rice and beans with chuletas and a side salad. They got very good Puertorican food! Delicious alcapurrias and platanos rellenos. I also recommend the flan, the way they make it here gives it a unique taste. Not sure if this place changed hands but today was not good. Have been there a few times before and it was always excellent. Today walked in and noticed the restaurant rating was "pending" which was strange because it was always grade A before. Got chicharrón - it was at least a day old. The meat was dried out and the chicharrón was not crispy. Also got morcilla and it tasted old - like it had sat in the refrigerator overnight - definitely not fresh. We LOVE this place. Just up in NYC last week in the Bronx for a little shopping and had to hit it. The Rellenos de Papa and Bacalaito were awesome, as is their coconut drink. My little one is hardly a multi-cultural eater, and I speak no Spanish, so I just pointed at her and asked the man "chips and queso?" He nodded and said "I have cheese pie" and I said OK, Whatever it was, she ate it :) It looked sort of like a flat calzone with cheese in it. She loved it!!! I love the fact that the 3 of us ate lunch for $11 bucks. Not the place for extended leisurely sitdowns-either buy and eat quick at the counter or take it with you, but perfect for quick lunch in between shopping!!! read more

Very hard to resist coming in here. The smell of awesomeness as you past by and the display makes you hit the brakes and go in. Prices are just right. Nice selection of juices to go with your meals. I'm Dominican and I consider this place disgusting. I worked around the corner and tried to give it a few chances when my co-workers would go pick up but I just couldn't. If you want the blood flow in your heart to slow or stop and have a stroke, then all the excess salt they put on these foods are for you. Then all the oil and grease that streams from it... ewwww. I would end up throwing it out and I had enough bothering and wasting my money no matter what I ordered. This neighborhood favorite was incredibly crowded at 9pm. There were two lines. One for the lottery and scratch offs and one for the counter. The deal was they both were in the middle of the joint. Be comfy. But not too comfy because as soon as you make eye contact with a counter person, spit that order. Asking for an item not currently on their hot line is tricky. I wanted the chicharrones de pollo, or massive chicken chunks. only. Like three orders though. A nod from the counter lady to the grill cook. A stare from the cook to me. Multiple nods and a smile from me. And a esta bien acknowledgement nod in return got the order going. No nod back means no hookup. The Avena juice is a chilled oatmeal drink. And it is delicious. The Parda juice is an acquired taste, i think. But I love it. Toss in a couple of pastelitos, or fried patties, filled with cheese or ground beef. The work menu is complete. Diabetics make a deal with themselves to eat one huge sweet a year: Cheesecake, german chocolate torte, sundae etc. Well if I had heart problems I might make this a once a year thing. In fact even without heart problems I'll stick to once a year. The food is greasy as all out. There is a grade pending in the window. The whole place screams cheap and that's ok because it is also good. Ok let me begin with how i was told about this place from my niece. She even sent me the video via YouTube. I had a meeting by crotona and i with someone else walked to this place. I was so excited to go there and eat, but i was so disappointed. First the morcilla was good the rice was so so and the pastel de celdo was not good at all. It was cold and the texture was grainy and very different from what i was raised eating a real puerto rican pastel. The chicharon for one was over 11.00 dollars definetly overpriced. The worst part was we ordered a lot of food even sopa de patita which also is not the best at all. Well there was a lot left over and we wanted to take the left over home. So we asked the ladies for take out containers they acted as if we were asking for China dishes. She gave us the smallest container to put two orders of pig feet soup two orders of rice one almost the whole piece 11.00 dollars of chicharron and morcilla. I couldn't believe how they were so stingy with their take out containers. By the time i got home most of it spilled inside the bag. For the so call Puerto Rican hospitality and taste they are so far off. I will never go back and make sure i spread the word to many others, they are overating themselves. I usually go to one on Westchester, la Isla and hands down they are better, top 10 star customer care service. I should have not let myself be suckered by their 188 bakery cuchifrito YouTube video! I grew up on the Concourse, and it was funny seeing Anthony Bourdain come ot the bronx and try out things my family have been eating forever. But I had to make a review. on where to find it. I personally walk from my grandmother's house who is on 178th or I walk from my hair place ( thats another post for another time) But a simple ride on the D or 4 train ( eat to woodlawn)train will get you there Its a small restaurant on Fordham Rd and yes its cheap and marvelous. Order , get and go. I cant complain its just hard to explain to people not from new york why places are so small and there is limited seating. Hey I say the better because you can walk and eat. All the same to me. I order my large coffee with five scoops of sugar and cuchifrito I do all except the blood sausage one. In all stop sleeping on the Bronx everyone. It took a famous new yorker who never been to the bronx to cause others to come. There are more hidden gems, just do not think that you will be sitting and dinning in most of them. Lo mejor ..I love this place my favorite Latin spot in the city besides what you get at home ....They never let me down but it's always a sad time for me when I go into a restaurant with my Spanglish haha yet perfect accent and can understand everything but hardly speak but that's the typical 2nd generation Latino kids story in 2016 no one taught me so I use what I know lol ...Carne guisado is so good the arroz Amarillo con habichuelas is on point and so is the chicharrones..I don't like the b rating but if it was my Lil kitchen on a bad day I'd probably get an f so that's that I'm not dirty either don't judge me lol ...Go with someone who speaks Spanish more than me of course you'll get out faster .. read more

Place is amazing. Would go back to try everything. As it was, just had mangu (mashed plantains, usually served with cheese or salami and onions), a whole plantain stuffed with a mixture of savoury meat and peas, a little treat called "rellenos de papas" - or a mashed potato ball stuffed with tasty meat and then cooked somehow so the crust is almost crispy, and of course, a helping of fried plantain slices.
