I rarely leave one-star reviews, but this experience--and the response to my feedback--left me with no choice. My friends and I arrived at Sho J Oregano's Crescent Avenue location at approximately 9:45 PM. The restaurant's posted closing time was 10:00 PM, yet we were told they would not seat us. Disappointed but willing to give them another chance, we paid for a taxi to their White Plains Road location, which was listed as being open until 11:00 PM. We arrived around 10:00 PM only to be told that they were also closed and would not serve us. The result? We wasted time, money on transportation, and an entire evening chasing a meal at a restaurant that was supposedly open. What made the experience even more disappointing was the response after I shared my review. Rather than acknowledging the inconvenience or apologizing for the confusion, the restaurant chose to challenge my account. I have no reason to misrepresent what happened. My review reflects exactly what my group experienced that evening. This isn't about expecting to be served after closing. It's about arriving during the posted business hours at two separate locations and being turned away both times. If the kitchen closes early or there is a last-seating policy, that information should be clearly posted online and at the restaurant. Customers shouldn't have to guess whether "open" actually means the business is still serving guests. For a restaurant that has received so much praise, I expected far better customer service and accountability. Great food can earn awards, but honesty, consistency, and respect for customers are what earn loyalty. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend making a special trip here unless you're prepared for the possibility that the posted hours may not reflect when they'll actually serve customers. read more

I was a bit confused about the times for the locations because we noticed 9 p.m. on one and 10 p.m. on another. I tried calling the one on Crescent Ave but got no answer after having the phone ring for a while. But I decided to go with this location because Crescent said 9 p.m., and this one said 10 p.m. The location is on a busy street. We did get Lyft, so that wasn't an issue for us. But you might have to walk a bit if there's no parking. It's spacious outside when you first enter, and there are two sides to be seated. We were seated right away and given menus. The decor is cute, and the wall artwork is colorful and lovely. Great music was playing late at night. We did arrive after 8:30, more like 8:45ish. They were out of something we wanted to order, but the server, I think, his green apron, said Juan. I'm not sure if he said his name at the time. As I said, we were hungry, which was the main focus, not to mention arriving before they closed. The appetizers were delicious. I suggest getting two if you have a big group because three pieces on a plate are insufficient for four people. The food came out promptly, everything was delicious, and we enjoyed every bite. Although we had tried take out in the past, this was the first time our family of four (including a 1.5 year old and 2.5 year old) dined at Ajo & Oregano. To say that we were pleasantly surprised would be an UNDERSTATEMENT! Since we live in the neighborhood, we decided to pop in on a Sunday (day before Labor Day) afternoon. Although the place was absolutely buzzing, we were seated immediately and accommodated with a place to put our double stroller + offered a high chair. (Anyone with young children knows that this goes a long way for a restaurant to ensure that you feel welcomed and not like a burden for "having the audacity" dine with your little ones.) The ambiance was colorful, vibrant, and definitely had a welcoming feel, as if you were transported to the island and eating at a local restaurant. Loved that, and also the beautiful mural on the wall! Now, on to the FOOD! We were super hungry so we definitely ate with our eyes and ordered a number of menu items. The best part is we were NOT disappointed by a single thing. Our meal included calamari ($15), mofonguitos de pollo ($14) for our appetizers, and Churrasco in chimi sauce ($33) and Fried Seabass Filet in Homemade Coconut Sauce ($17) for entrees. The portions were seriously MASSIVE! Needless to say we had leftovers that somehow tasted even better the next day! We ordered the chicken tenders for our 2yo which included a side of white rice and red beans and I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't typical (frozen) chicken tenders that you'd expect. They had actually made them fresh, and it was toddler approved! All in all, we had a wonderful experience and you should visit too to experience the same. While vacationing in New York I met up with family for dinner and got to try some pretty amazing Dominican food. The location looks small from the outside but when you walk in there are technically 2 sides for dining as well as some seating in the front covered area. There is pretty artwork on the walls and decor that represents the Dominican Republic all over. The food is made fresh to order so depending on what you get you may wait a little bit for it to come out, which we were totally okay with. I have no problem waiting for food if that means you get an amazing dish you can tell was made with love. Everything was so delicious and very flavorful. My daughter had the fried salami & tostones dish which was a big hit for her. While I had the Mar Y Tierra which was grilled steak & sauteed shrimp. The rice & beans came in little calderos that were so cute. I have never seen them so small, but it added a nice touch to the presentation. I went here recently for the first time after knowing about this restaurants for several years. I am honestly very surprised at the negative reviews. Perhaps they changed management or improved their ways? My experience was truly amazing. The food was DELICIOUS. Every single thing my partner and I ordered was so yummy. I'm still thinking about the Chicharron, yucca fries, and the Tamarindo juice I had. We also tried the pollo a la parrilla with moro de habichuelas negras. OMG! Delish!! I look forward to returning. The lady that took care of us was also really nice. By the way, we went around lunch time so it wasn't busy at all. Maybe that helped with the overall great experience. I was soooo disappointed with the food. The dishes tasted very "commercial," as if they're trying to appeal to everyone instead of sticking to Dominican/Caribbean flavors. Not at all what I was expecting. My party and I each asked for different items to spruce up our meals: a little lime here, some black pepper and steak sauce over there. It made the dishes palatable, but none of us cleaned our plates. The wilted lettuce and bruised avocado salad didn't do much to make me a believer in this place. It was ridiculously hot, but our server kept telling us the A/C was on. This made us eat quickly and leave. It's very rare that I post a bad review, but this place is on my worst of list. The food portion was small considering what you pay for and extremely salty. Seriously, why is there more red bean juice than red beans in my dish!? The wait was longer than it should have been for some chicken and red beans. The waitress tried to pull one over on us regarding the tip. Gratuity is already included on the bill ( which I like!) but there is no indication of that until you settle your check and it's revealed that you just paid the waitress an additional 25 percent. It was so juicy and tender and seasoned very well. The white rice and red beans came out perfect. Mofonguitos de platano w/ beef 7.8 This was a good starter just wish it would've come out hot. First time at this place. The ambiance was so colorful and cute. Water in tin cans, food in personal calderos, portions were very big. I tasted the fried chicken. Crispy and piping hot. Anyway, i ordered a red sangria (the best I've ever had- sweet, if you're into that), we had the chicken stuffed avocado that was a halved avocado with fried chicken chunks, pico de gallo and 'pink sauce' sitting atop 4 pieces of yuca. YUM!!!! I ordered the churrasco mofongo, it had some sort of garlicky cheese sauce on top and my husband had the longaniza mofongo with pink sauce on top. Both were excellent and I took half of mine home. Everything we ordered was beautifully plated, as was everything else I saw being served to other tables! I also appreciated that our waitress spoke English and Spanish as I did not feel out of place..however, my husband is Dominican so it wouldn't have been an issue anyway. The one thing I would warn anyone about is the parking situation could be a bit difficult..they do have valet or if you can find your own street parking, then you're set. They also have another location that is in the little Italy section of the Bronx on Crescent Ave, which is rumored to be bigger and maybe the parking a bit easier. I am so glad to be able to say that the service matches the food--EXCELLENT!!!! My agency had a staff celebration here, so we were able to truly enjoy the decor and music and smorgasbord of delicious food at an easeful pace. Favorite dishes include EVERYTHING I HAD: the tostones sliders (chicken & beef), fongocito (with shrimp), and churrasco a la plaila. The servings are VERY GENEROUS, and big shoutouts to the sauces that accompany each dish!!! Not good. Everything is overly sweet from the drinks to the beans? Which is such a weird flavor to taste. My spaghetti was a mess of dairy and oil and random pieces of corn. Completely inedible. The waitress realized and asked what was wrong with it and had a knowing look. Never a good sign lol. Also service is minimal to none. I found this cute little restaurant when I went to the Bronx Zoo. I noticed people waiting outside and I said to myself this place must be really good. I went in and joined the wait list and in 30 mins or less we were called and seated. I don't know where to start. I was in awww when I taste the food and how delicious it was. The natural juices are so refreshing. Only thing I think they should considered doing is getting a larger space since they have such a great amount of customers.
