After a bad experience at another animal hospital we brought our dog here. We were brought to an exam room immediately. The tech came in and triaged our pet. S about tome later the veterinarian came in to do an assessment. She diagnosed the problem as a pinched nerve in our dog's back. She ordered an injection of pain medicine and some medication going forward. We were pleased with 1stPet. They acted in a timely manner. They were compassionate and innovative. They were able to answer all of my questions in depth, calling my nerves. All of the staff were very friendly and attentive. I don't remember the tech's name but both the tech and Dr. Nixon were absolutely amazing! My pup had a very upset stomach and had an accident while in the room, without messing a beat Dr. Nixon went above and beyond and got a stool sample. My pup end up falling asleep while we were waiting to be seen in spite of initially being very nervous as it was his first vet experience. I credit this to their kind staff and the quiet room they placed us in. I received a price quote prior to having any services performed which was great. Pricing is very reasonable and they have flexible options to accommodate owner's needs. I was given recommendations for food, supplements and so on. I had come into the vet for an emergency for my dog back in may. After a long night we were told the best option would be to put her down. And I have to say thank you to shannon. My experience would have been so difficult w/o her. She was so caring, kind, and empathetic. She shared personal stories with us and made us feel like Marley was is AMAZING hands! I went to pick up marleys ashes and shannon was there and saw me and gave me the biggest hug! It was so nice to have that connection with her. I am so appreciate that shannon made such a terrible moment memorable for good reasons. I remember shannon overhead I signed a DNR she said "never feel guilty for making that decision, you are doing what is best" and she shared similar stories. Our normal vet is 1st Pet Chandler and they are ALWAYS 5 stars. Unfortunately, we needed an Urgent Care visit and Chandler was not accepting appointments and referred us to the Mesa location. After an over the phone consult, it was decided that at the recommendation of the Mesa veterinarian, We should bring our pup down asap to be seen. After arriving, the triage staff determined that our pup was not of the highest level (in terms of immediate need) and that we would be seen "next." That "next" took nearly 5 hours. They did not effectively communicate timely updates and the waiting room was hot. While I was certainly frustrated (justifiably so given the circumstances) the front desk provided poor customer service and almost zero empathy. In conclusion, the Mesa 1st Pet location is understaffed and overworked. This leads to employees who are stressed and employees that do not provide the level of good customer service one should expect at an emergency vet clinic; this ultimately leads to angry and stressed customers who are there under bad circumstances to begin with. While we were very thankful once we were seen, due to the poor communication and initial service the review is three stars and a very poor overall experience. read more

My dog sat there for 11hrs in a crate until the doctor got out of surgery to look at his inner ear infection which had paralyzed the right side of his face. The dr said she didn't see any reason for the swelling in his face (sagging face) and didn't see anything wrong in his ear or mouth to cause the swelling and drooling. I had to ask for an IV because the dog hasn't eaten or drank any water in 48hrs at this point. The DR pushed a valley fever test. The dog showed zero symptoms of valley fever. They performed a blood test, and gave him an IV injection under his skin between his shoulder blades at my request. They sent him home with pain killers, antibiotics, and an anti inflammatory med. My dog has no use of the entire right side of his face. No ear movement, no eye lid reaction, no lip movement, no nostril movement. They found nothing wrong. Nearly $700 later i am back where i was when i dropped the dog off. read more

Do not bring your pets here. They will rob you for all your money, and still try to force euthanasia on your pet assuming you can't afford treatment. My dog had stones and they did X-rays and showed stones in the bladder and urethra, then tried to lodge the stones and did not do another X-ray after they just said they couldn't push them out, they offered surgery for 2000 in the bladder but if they have to go into the urethra 5/6,000. I wanted a second opinion so I took him elsewhere they did another X-ray and saw in fact they did move the stones and should've done an X-ray after to confirm. 2 years later my dog is still alive and healthy. But they tried to do the exact same Thing to my mothers dogs 2 days ago with no compassion insisting putting the dog down. read more

Our overall experience here was absolutely amazing. The doctor was very kind, responsive, understanding and willing to explain things to us more than once. They understood the financial thing from the patients sides and was willing to work with us! My pup is looking better then ever!!! Even his vet didn't care from him like that. He has severe allergies where he could barely open his eyes. What a situation that was going on they were able to put him on medication. His skin has completely cleared up his coat is healthy he can open his eyes and see. We were understanding what was going on and we were so scared to use him. We were told over the phone that in order to see a vet, the initial cost was $200, this was NOT so once we arrived. When they see that you are in need of urgent care, and have no choice, they overcharge for their services and make it difficult for pet owners to afford proper care for their animals. In some cases, they will even recommend unnecessary tests and procedures just to pad their bill. While there's no question that most veterinarians care deeply about animals. They have dedicated their lives to caring for them. But there's also no question that this business is only in it for the money. read more

When my 15yo cat was dying of cancer I thought humane euthanasia was the right thing to do and so did the 2 other vets that we had seen. Apparently 1st pet did not. At least not without trying to sell us everything all over again. We called ahead to first pet to arrange an urgent humane euthanasia for our cat that had suddenly declined. We called ahead to explain the situation and the technician said to come in and they would be ready. When I arrived I had all of Lily's records ready yet the veterinarian was unwilling to look at these records from the other vets and insisted on taking Lily to the back for other tests. The vet had already identified that Lily's heart had stopped and was in respiratory distress. She was insistent on resuscitating the cat and I had to yell at her to stop and give me my dying cat back. I had to wrestle the laundry basket with my dying cat away from the vet. We left with no services and only the disrespect of not being listened to. I can't believe they had the audacity to send a bill. read more

STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE We only came here because it was 4th of July and everywhere was closed. We took our 14 yr old Chihuahua because she seemed like she was intermittently agitated and breathing quickly. (She's old so we didn't expect great news) When we got there things went quick, they checked us in and got us in a room quickly. The technician came in about 5mins later and we explained to her what was going on. She's ended up saying they need to take our dog in the back so the doctor could check her. The technician leaves with our dog and not even 2mins later another person comes in and says: Hey I'm going to give you a lot of information here. So the doctor says she thinks we should do a critical sheet (what does that even mean) and so that the doctor can get started we need a $900 deposit. At this point we asked, uhhh so what do you mean? Why? What's the reasoning behind the urgency of this "critical sheet"? She responded with I don't know she just asked us to get that from you so the doctor can get started. So we naturally declined, we signed a paper saying we declined (they made us sign that we declined) because I'm not paying anything without knowing exactly what's happening and why. Anyway the tech left and like 15 mins later the doctor came in (again be cause we declined) and she said that our dog had a heart murmur and probably fluid in her lungs. (Seriously? How hard was it to tell us that before asking us for a $900 "deposit to get started") We told the doctor to give us a min to talk about. She said ok I'll be back in a min. The doctor left, in that time our normal vet called us, we explained the situation and said that they'd see our dog. We trust them more so figured we'd go there instead. At that point, we were still waiting in the room and the doctor hadn't come back. We waited an hour in the room, during which we got up and told the staff at the front we're leaving and to please bring our dog twice and they just said ok I'll ask the doctor. Excuse me? Ask the doctor about taking my own dog? Eventually, after us getting upset they sent the doctor back to our room and said they put our dog on oxygen. Even though we signed we DECLINED. They said well we aren't charging you for that, and we said that's not the point, it's unethical to do anything without asking or in this case doing it even though we had declined. They then tried to scare us into thinking that our dog would likely not live much longer if we had them take her off the oxygen. Finally, they brought our dog back we paid ($250 btw) and we left. We went to see our vet, they ran their tests which included an X-ray and blood work. They said that our dog doesn't need oxygen just some medicine and rest. At this point she's doing way better and our vet says she'll make a full recovery in a week or so. read more

Although the Doctor had to have her conversations with us over the phone due to Covid, we did not feel the distance. The women that helped us send our sweet boy over the rainbow bridge were so compassionate and sweet. We got him cremated and again, didn't know what to expect not having done this before. When we picked up his ashes, 3 days later, he came to us in a beautiful box that showed us how much they truly care about their patients and their humans. Today I received a beautiful card in the mail with well wishes and ink paw prints of Frank. You guys truly are the best!!!! Anyone with a pet knows the horrible feeling of seeing your pet hurt and/or sick. They can't tell you what they feel and just looking at them in need breaks your heart so, you have to take them to a vet...and if it's a weekend then you have to find an emergency vet clinic. Well, that was me. It was Sunday afternoon when my cat was showing signs of a problem. First Pet is closest to my house so I took him there. This was not my first pet that I'd taken here. Approximately six months ago, I brought one my dogs here as well, which wasn't a great experience but, I had forgotten, I'm thinking because of the stress of losing that dog a few days after bringing it the First Pet. If I had remembered I wouldn't have brought my cat in to them. This place is not a warm fuzzy feeling kind of vet clinic. It is an all about the money clinic. If you have a lot of money to pay then this is the place for you to bring your pet. If you don't then you will be in the same boat as me with a sick pet a $140 charge just for walking through the door and zero help for your pet. But hey $140 is what everyone should charge for a cat temperature taken right?! I could've done that myself. Oh, the vet did ask me, in a very blank unemotional at all way what amount I could afford after showing me a paper w/$650+ charges that I said I can not afford. I told her that $300 would be pushing it for me . She said "there is nothing we can do for $300 but, she offered 3 pain pills for my cat for I believe it was $70 .on top of the $140 walk in fee. At first out of desperation I thought I should do that but, after consideration I chose not to. So faced with a $140 charge and a long wait for nothing, I'm going to pass on ever going to this place again. I've been to other vet clinics that aren't cheap but, at least have a vet that shows a true love and care for animals not just a love of their income read more

Negative 10 if I could. Something is not right about this place. Unfortunately, I'm dealing with financial issues right now & only have $100 to my name. Maybe that was a mistake telling them that off the bat so I didn't have any "surprises" & asked if they do payment plans, etc. They said there are quick & easy applications for that, which I was more than happy to do-- I'll do ANYTHING for my boy, which by the way-- that never even came up when I was there. I came here because it was 1am & nobody else was answering their phones. My cat has been groaning, howling, & hissing every time he cleans his anus & this time he went hiding in my closet doing this-- which is obviously a bad sign. I googled it & saw the short list of possibilities & saw to take to the vet right away; so I did. When I got there, the young woman at the front desk is condescending in her attitude, but that's the least of my worries. Then going in, they took my cat to the back. I heard them yell at him twice-- not only is he completely harmless even in pain & fear, but HES IN PAIN & FEAR & you're YELLING at my cat. Then I hear a bunch of laughing of the one seeing my cat & another young woman back there. The visit was very short-- when she brought my Esco boy back, she said absolutely nothing was wrong & that they only detected that he has diarrhea. Really? Cause there's no diarrhea in his litter box. And he's fuck*ng wailing in pain & agony & hiding any time he cleans his rectal area. "Everything's fine, you don't have to pay anything!". I looked at her & said, "Are you sure..? No ruptured anal glands? No abyss's? No cuts? No hemorrhage? Nothing is wrong with his rectum?" Again, she said no, & that he was fine. I then said, "If it's about the money & you're not telling me something or not looking for what's wrong, I will literally give you the only money I have ($100) to make sure he's okay. He doesn't need ointment? Antibiotics? NOTHING?". She got beat red & was actually shakey, like she was hiding something & said the vet said his colon is fine & something about some test coming back completely normal besides the "detection of diarrhea". Obviously my cat is not fuck*ng fine when he's howling, hissing, & groaning loudly whenever he's cleaning himself. I don't trust this place for sh*t. Now back home, he's still going at it on his rectum. My poor baby I'll be taking him elsewhere when business hours are open. I did this because it was a fuck*ng emergency at 1am & had no other options. I feel like I failed him taking him here. read more

We unfortunately were out of town and my parents took our dog to the closest vet they could find as he was in need of some care and unfortunately they ended up here. They not only gave us zero options in regards to how they would treat our pet, CT Scan or Surgery and of course they couldn't find anyone to do the first of the two so it was only surgery. After they decided to continue to rack up our bill with charges and no options and the final outcome being death for our pooch. We tried to call and talk to David the site manager but he very childishly shunned us away without a care in the world. This was only after he and his office staff dodged us for a couple of days. This place is terrible they only care about billing you as the customer care is atrocious and they could ultimately care less about you or the pet you love. Pretty ridiculous that the owner Randy S only replies to positive comments on here and hides away from anyone who had issues at one of his facilities. True care is about making sure your customers are happy with their visit and resolving the best you can any outstanding issues they may have. We were recommended here from our vet, which I'm not sure why. They almost killed my dog and their weekend emergency vet is the most negligent and narcissistic vet I've ever encountered. Doctor Deer let our sweet Ava sit in a kennel for 2 days straight. After throwing up consistently for 2 days, they didn't ask to give her fluids, they never called, the only call I received was permission to be charged for an x ray. The vet would not give us any options besides exploratory surgery and would make statements about Ava's x ray and then back track and change her story to talk down to us when we questioned what she was saying. I brought our beloved Brownie to the emergency vet on Saturday, March 12. He was still walking, drinking and wagging his tail but I could tell he wasn't feeling well. He seemed to be in discomfort. The vet said they would take blood work to see what what was going on and he should stay overnight. We left him in their care thinking they would do all they could to help him. The next day at 6 am, I received a call from their center and the vet said there was no change in his condition. They were going to run more tests. I called 1st Pet Veterinary Centers many times throughout the day to check on our dog Brownie. No return call. I finally got a call about 6 pm (12 hours later) and they said they had put him on oxygen and there was probably nothing more they could do for him. I don't know how long my dog was in a kennel suffering! I feel like they kept him alive and suffering until we came in to pay for the euthanasia and cremation. We made the decision to put Brownie to sleep. When we first arrived, they had added almost $500 to the bill. My daughter had some questions about the bill and the woman grabbed it out of her hands. It was so unprofessional. The woman started to explain that their prices are so high because they have x y and z, none of which was used to save our dog. I've had to put down many pets and it was a calm and peaceful experience for the pet. Not so here. I asked them MANY times not to bring Brownie out into a room if he was under distress. They did it anyway. He was in SO MUCH DISTRESS when they brought him in. They had oxygen for him but the girl didn't put it on him. We asked her to do it and she LEFT the room. He was under so much distress blood came out of his nose and his mouth. They left us in the room to deal with our extremely stressed out pup. It was the worst experience of my life. And my daughter and I are completely traumatized from this experience. We haven't been able to sleep or work since this happened. Update: Medical report says Brownie passed peacefully. This is a LIE. No mention of my requesting them several times not to bring Brownie into the room if he was distressed in the medial report. They did say there was oxygen in the room BUT not that they did not assist us in giving it to Brownie. We are not vets. I asked that they add all of this but they told me they can't add any communication from the client even though all other communication from me is on the medical report. They are just covering for themselves!! read more

I brought my dog here 3 weeks ago to get her flu and rabies shots. I was charged for both shots and an Annual Exam fee ($75). Fast forward three weeks and the shot requires a booster (price went from $45 to $70). And, now, I am AGAIN being charged another Annual Exam fee. Does that even make any sense? I am not here for an exam I am here to get her shot administered. The staff are friendly and warm and clearly care about the pets they serve - no complaints, but the financial practices do not sit well with me. read more
