Then Berkeley changed the street, eliminating virtually all parking, which was not the fault of 1st United. Teller was stone cold and a poor communicator. I requested to deposit into my adult child's savings. She deposited into the checking account instead WITHOUT communicating this. When I saw the receipt I asked to deposit it in savings. After correcting, THEN she told me she deposited into checking because it was overdrawn. Of course I would have wanted this in the first place? The whole experience felt like a game with a very insensitive teller who doesn't know I have chemo brain, but obviously doesn't care about disabled customers or customer service. I hope she can get a teller position at Golden 1 on Broadway. Their workers and security guards are joyful and they play jazz in the background. Or, 1st United should really just invest in customer service training and coaching for their staff to be able work effectively and respectfully across differences. read more

This was my first experience using a credit union for an auto loan and it went really smoothly. Farzana Z. was my agent and she went above and beyond. She not only was really on top of communication at a time at a time I needed answers quickly, but she reviewed contracts with me to make sure I understood what I was signing. She saved me from getting scammed and helped me understand the loan/buying process so dealerships couldn't take advantage of my ignorance. I tried opening an account here last year. Called on the phone and found out what documents were required. Was told to bring two photo IDs, and no other requirements mentioned. Once I actually got there, the story swiftly changed. Was told I had to make an appointment to open an account; soonest was a week away. So I did that, and kept the appointment on time....they did not...I had to wait 35 minutes. Finally someone deigned to see me. The requirements I was told on the phone changed also. A valid senior ID card from the DMV and a valid passport was no longer enough. Now I needed a birth certificate and rental lease also. Had to make another appointment a week away. I kept that one on time, and again had to wait to be seen. Story changed again. Now I also needed a social security card. So yeah I cussed them out, went to Poppy Bank in Alameda the next day, opened a free checking account with 'only' the ID card and passport. Want to waste a whole lot of time and effort on a neverending runaround? 1st United Credit Union is THE place to go! read more

The travel agent Ms. Natasha is very professional and knowledgeable when it comes to hospitality and traveling abroad. She provided us with all of our itinerary and days before the trip she provided us with things we needed to know to remain safe. I love banking with 1st United Credit Union. Recently, on Tuesday, May 30th, 2023, I needed to cash a check and the bank normally places a hold on my checks. Zohra Qubadi went above and beyond the call of duty to ask her manager to release funds to me that I needed due to a funeral arrangement.. OMG! We have an account at 1st USCU in the name and ID number of an irrevocable trust. After about 10 years of correctly reporting the interest, the 2020 Form 1099-INT was incorrectly reported to the trustee's ID. After MANY emails and phone calls we finally received a corrected 1099. Just received the 1099 for 2021 - WRONG AGAIN! We have a second account opened in the name of our Living Trust. Again, after several years, 1st USCU changed it to a joint account. Yikes, I don't know what is going on but I DO NOT RECOMMEND this credit union. read more

I came here to open a business account but the city of Oakland has some challenges with paperwork. Chenoa tried every possible search option to find the license in the database - the license that was right in front of her, from the city of Oakland, that came from the database she was searching in. I ended up realizing that a full fledged business account wasn't necessary. Chenoa gave me top notch customer service that included information, compassion and helpful suggestions. I am very glad to have found 1st United Credit Union! (Btw, the security system is great, better too secure than not enough as far as my funds are concerned!!) read more

The bank reached out to me to clarify the situation. They are actually unable to clear a large cashier's check on the same day, although ten days does seem excessive. Other banks may have other processes in place for immediate clearing of checks, but I understand that check holds are a financial safety precaution. Moving forward, wire-transfer is the way to go --- in-person with a paper check, not so much. read more

I like the idea of a credit union--I naively believed they were about serving the local community--ha! I have been a patron of this 1st united on Claremont for years. My kid turned 18 and needs her own bank account before she goes off to college. We went in on a Friday to open an account and they said we needed an appt---we made one for 11:00 the next day--I could not come but they said it would be easy for her to open herself. Well around 11:30 she called me saying they would not open because she did not have her actual ss card with her. She had a passport, her birth certificate, three checks from her employer and her paystub. (which they said would be fine the day before) I could not find the ss card so I offered to send them a copy of her tax return with her ssn and name/address and or a confirmation letter from the IRS and they said they needed the actual card! I did not need my ss card to open my account there and can only conclude that they were treating my kid that way because she was young and black. She had money to deposit, and ample ID--We have her card now but not going back there! read more

I love credit unions but this branch or bank is hard to love. First, they make it literally impossible to get in the door with an impossible security door system. Second, the staff are either poorly trained or or their systems just plain stink because doing anything takes three to four times as long as any other bank or credit union I've been to. The only good thing is that there are never any lines here - although it's mitigated by the slowness of the tellers. read more

My mother had some pretty complicated banking business, and I was helping out by interpreting (she's deaf and we speak sign language). The case worker we were assigned was so personable and helpful and patient, I felt compelled to write about it and joined Yelp expressly to do so. Her name is Bernie Smith and by the time we left, we were her biggest fans! Unfortunately, this is not the usual location she works at, so next time we go in, we'll miss seeing her.
