Inquired about a particular game through their Instagram page and was given a certain price, kind of high.. but I figured better off buying it here than off OfferUp or Craigslist. I walk into the store yesterday and the woman working gives me a higher price for the game. Instead of arguing, I purchased the game on eBay when I returned home. I'm not sure if they just make it up as they go, or they just don't mark the games with price tags so they can attempt to gouge you. Either way they have lost my business. read more

They say they're open but lie about it , even had the were open sign up, online says they are open at noon went over there and all doors are locked at it was already 1230 and as I was driving by I saw a group of three people walk out that building with items , and then I tried calling about 3 different times and no one answers the phone . This place is really cool and friendly. It may not seem like much but they have a variety of old games and console's to check out. Staff is always willing to help look for games in particular, so if they don't have it in the shop they can definitely help hunt it down for you. The console's they have are in good condition and respond quickly if you have any questions on their Instagram, normally they will post new photos on what they have in store! If you anything broken staff is likely to fix it and reasonable prices. read more

I'm throughly happy we found this place! We came from San Bernardino and the 40 minute trip was worth it. Huge selection of retro video games and consoles and the guy running the place is very nice and professional. He makes you feel welcomed and he has a passion for his product and treats his customers with value. We bought some games and they have been working without problems so far. They're going to need a bunch of 1UPs to save their dying business. You never know when they're open, their store hours say one thing, but you get there and it's locked, with no sign of anybody. I brought in something to be fixed, and the lady didn't seem too enthusiastic to work on it and told me she couldn't find any parts for it online. I just got home right now and found the part, no problem. Another time about a year ago, they sold me bad gamecube controllers. I don't judge a lot of places, but when you're consistently hot, wet trash, uhhhh you're gonna get a bad review. This place is for the birds. read more

Super awesome shop. The owner is really friendly and gives honest opinions and suggestions about games. There are lots of classic and vintage games you can't really find anywhere else. It's also all reasonably priced games, systems, and accessories. They have since opened a classic arcade and that is also tons of fun. The price $5 for an hour of play on any games in the arcade. I go to this store at least a few times a month to check out what's new in stock or at the arcade. read more

Since it was my first time going to LA, I had done a search on Yelp beforehand for retro gaming shops in the area. Since 1UP was on the road into LA and Yelp said it was cheaper than other stores I thought I could give it a shot. And boy, was I happy for that. I arrived Covina around 12AM and was surprised to find the shop closed. Bummer. Then I tried to call them, but only got a message telling me the message box was full. Bummer again. The shop looked promising enough though, so I decided to get some food and try my luck again later. One hour later I returned and the shop was open. I was greated by a nice, chill guy behind the counter called Angel, he apologized for being closed earlier. I think he's the owner and only employee, so I can sort of understand if he has to close the shop now and then. But a sign would've been nice. Long story short, I ended up buying several NES games (he's got PLENTY), a NES console (I only had a European one) and a Gamecube controller. They have games for almost every system, even a little bit for some of the newer consoles like XBOX360 and PS3. The coolest thing about Angel: He really cares about his customers. I spent over 2 hours in his shop while he was cleaning all my games and the console with cleaning fluid making them look like new again. Since it was my first time in the shop, he also gave me a 10% discount on everything I bought, extra discount on the gamecube controller and an extra controller for the NES for free. He even hooked everything up to a TV so I was able to test the NES, the controllers and all the games to ensure that everything worked as intended. When it comes to the game prizes - some below, some above eBay prizes. Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire were 25$, Emerald 35$, Mega Man 3 20-25$, Punch out!! 10-15$, Bubble Bobble II w/ case 699$ (go on and buy it, he has it!) - but you know that what you buy works, you get guarantee on the games and you get to hang out in an awesome shop with an awesome guy. Angel, if I lived closer to LA, I would basically be living IN your store. TENOUTTATEN! (Oh, and by the way, my next shop on the list of gaming stores was Game Dude. I had to check it out just because and let me tell you - it was a huge letdown after being at 1UP. Fewer NES games and not nearly as friendly staff. If you have to choose one, give 1UP and Angel a chance.) read more

I walked in there with a friend and was blown away, these guys have an incredible selection of games and consoles. Their consoles range from PS3's and Xbox 360's to colleco vision and DreamCast. They had a ton of great games, from Golden Eye to Call of Duty and system controllers all reasonably priced!! The guys in there were very helpful and down to earth. I would ask for this game or that game and they would always help me out. I'm definitely going to be coming back and shopping here more often! read more

They have a huge selection of retro systems/games & accessories and the price is right. Let me just start by saying awesome I've been trying to get in your pool last week and they've been doing some remodeling I come to find out the owner Joey is setting up a retro arcade in the back of the shop. Anyway I was on the market for original Xbox consul and I looked online craigslist eBay none of it really felt right though so I walk in here and ask if they have one available and he says yeah absolutely. He brings out this Xbox that looks brand-new out-of-the-box clean I was amazed that this got talent for refurbishing video game console he was super polite awesome to talk to. 1up video games is one of those awesome mom and pop style video game shops that we don't see enough of these days. My girlfriend and I stumbled upon this place after enjoying a Starbucks coffee and stroll through charming old town Covina. This place is awesome because you can find both new and vintage games. I am a big retro gamer and visiting this place was a dream come true as I hate ordering games online. My girlfriend will also be taking her little brothers PlayStation in to this shop to be repaired in the coming week or so. I believe they also repair xbox 360's but you can call them to be sure. Joey is a very helpful store owner. Came in with some pretty old 360 games that wouldn't fetch much and a couple 3DS games with a system and got $110. Can't say GameStop would give the same amount. I also came in to get a copy of Smash Bros. Melee resurfaced (which I've had trouble with ever since I bought it on eBay). While he couldn't get the game to play, he didn't charge for the resurfacing and even said he'd keep a look out and contact me as soon as he gets another copy in his store! Honestly, little to nothing when it comes to customer service.. As much as I want to love this store I just cant because they simply dont help customers, at least whenever I go in the store. Maybe because I dont look like a typical gamer they think I 1) don't know general video game knowledge/ prices 2) don't deserve to be greeted in a friendly manner. (or even anything other than the boring uninterested responses to any of my questions when they do actually bother to listen to me) they show even less than no customer service but no respect, terrible. they like to manipulate you into coming into the store offering much higher prices to buy used games and complete consoles off you then when you get in there they completely low ball you and hope that you wont want to pack all of your things back up to go home empty handed.. Best of all today I've been calling since 11 and I get a mix between answering and hanging up on me, letting it ring a couple times and sending it to voicemail and best of all answering and not saying a word just setting the phone down while I could hear talking and activity going on inside the store while I wait patiently saying hello, is anyone there? until the line once again clicks off in my ear.. they did the answer, wait , and hang up multiple times until I decided to put my time into something actually productive to others instead of wasting my time asking If they have an overpriced game Im willing to buy from them.. Thanks guys at 1up! i have given you more than enough chances to be an actual business and take care of your customers.. I wont put up with that nonsense and still pay the price of buying items online where atleast I get an email confirmation thanking me for my purchase! lol don't waste your time guys.. you can tell they stereotype customers and try to rip off the people they assume arent game savvy.. *Long Review, sorry* After impulsively deciding to go to retro gaming stores I hadn't been to yet today, I decided to hit up 1UP Videogames first, as they were the closest. I walked in and immediately noticed they had a decent stock of Dreamcast games, this made me immediately feel that I had made the right choice stopping by. I then began to talk to the owner, who later introduced himself as Joey. He is by far one of the most laid-back and fair proprietors I've ever seen. I consider myself a highly indecisive person, so as a result, I overthink everything and ended up borderline loitering in the store just looking at all the merchandise. Yet, he was patient and didn't rush me for being in the store so long. He waited for me to make up my mind; we chatted while I browsed, he gave me tips on some hardware questions I had, helped other customers, answered the phone several times, and FINALLY when I was ready (incredibly sorry that I took as long as I did, Joey!), he gladly helped me out and then had the kindness to give me some great deals. He was extremely kind and knowledgable on everything I had to ask and he has perhaps what is one of the best philosophies I've seen in the Retro Gaming community. He believes in fairness, and he wants his customers to be happy. He was very generous in the prices he gave and all are based on the sole fact he simply charges close to what he paid for it. If it was cheap for him, it'll be cheap for you. His stock is simply fantastic and if it isn't in a display case, chances are he has it somewhere. He even keeps his eye out for anything he doesn't have that you as a customer want, and saves it for you when he finds it. Now that's customer service. All in all, if you're fed up with the sorry state of the Retro Gaming market where mostly everyone is trying to charge full market price for ordinary items, then 1UP Videogames is a place you should seriously consider going to. Needless to say, I was so satisfied with the service that I ended up stopping only here, and left straight for home.
