I arrived a little bit over 10 minutes late due to traffic and I did not see anyone at the front. Someone had to go find the person that worked at the box office to come and she said that they over sold the ticket to the event. At first, she said that they waited 10 minutes then she changed it to seven minutes. Thought they waited for me to check in then they gave up my seat. I pay for the ticket ahead of time so I lost out on money because the theater made a mistake of overselling. I asked her if there's a way of getting a refund and she said that I can try but most likely not. At all cost avoid this theater because they will sell your seats away, even if you paid for them already.

The house band, The Dynasties, are the best live band in the LA comedy scene -- they play hot bitchin jazz, add musical cues for the comics, and will generally make your week better. This is a place that comedians want to hang out. Craig Robinson might show up for a surprise musical set and take requests from the audience while you all sing together. Sarah Silverman might sit on the floor with flash cards of her new jokes and run them by you. Reggie Watts might drop by and crank out some skat poetry and vocalization whimsy. You might hear a live theramin performance, or a rendition of Dolly Parton's Jolene on a musical saw. Not a bad seat in the house, staff are welcoming and friendly. Fun merch, and popcorn combos with the perfect blend of sweet and salty toppings to satisfy your munchies. You'll be laughing from the moment the sound booth tells you to silence your cell phone to the moment you walk back into the world to your car. Proprietors Vanessa Ragland and Jamie Flam the hosts of their flagship Saturday night special, Dynasty Tonight, will delight you with the impressive combo of hilarity and empathy, making every night feel like a hangout with your funniest pals. The building is old school opened in 1926 as a Vaudeville house so it's always been entertaining. It's had different iterations over the years, most recently the Hayworth Theatre. Then in 2018 it officially became Dynasty Typerwriter Now the theater is in Westlake, right next to MacArthur Park where many of Los Angeles' unhomed population lives. So yes you can search and find street parking, but if you have a nicer car it may be better to just not risk it and park in the nearby parking garage - 611 S Carondelet Street. Rideshare is ideal though. It's a small theater (200 seats) so if you are hoping for a close up seat to see better or get in on some crowd work, you should arrive when doors open. I am quite the opposite and enjoy a good view, but sitting far outside of the crowd-work arena! Give me a good seat on the side back a few rows and I'm happy. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE crowdwork, just not aimed at me. I've seen Tig Notaro and Marc Maron here - obviously both great shows and I enjoyed them! When you sit in the seat, prepare for a little trip. They glide! haha It's kind of weird but kind of fun that they slide a bit but I see it shocking everyone when they first sit down so prepare yourself. They are the kind of seats that start hurting after sitting for an hour so my fellow ADHD peoples, prepare to do a lot of shifting in your seat. They have good canned beer options, including a couple of NA which is nice. Also full concession stand for snacks, including their special popcorn. Staff is friendly and I always enjoy this venue! I went to this venue May 2026 for a stand up show…read more I took the metro to the Chinatown station and walked 15ish minutes to the venue. (You walk along the Historic LA park). It felt safe overall walking at 6pm even with the homeless in the area, because there were a lot of locals out walking with their family/pets. The walk back to the station was a little more concerning, highly recommend not being solo on the way back - it's just not well illuminated along Spring St in portions. The venue itself is lovely and very safe feeling but the surrounding areas at times feel sketchy. I did public transport because I was worried parking would be an issue, but it seems there was actually plenty of parking down the street since it's so close to the park. I would advise parking in the lot on the other side of Spring St. The check in was easy, they check your ID and give you a wristband if you want to drink. There's a sweetly arranged outside area for hanging out and the bar inside was well decorated. The venue was nice, though I sat in I1 and I had my view partially blocked by a pole (it wasn't too bad because I was watching stand up and he moved around a lot, but I imagine it may be annoying for other types of shows or performances). Would totally visit an event here again.

The "Cinderella" of venues, it takes the grand, outdoor setting of the Bowl (concrete Jerusalem gates carved into the Hollywood hills) and the intimacy of a backyard party. With 1200 seats (opposed to 17500), you're always under 100 feet from the stage. The seats being steeply raked means you are closer to the stage than the Greek. (The Theater, I mean, not loud, hairy Niko guy next to you). And being tucked into a natural canyon makes the acoustics extra crispy, which made Erasure (10 years ago today) one of my favorite concerts. Side note: I found the 3 tickets on ebay for 99 cents, something that pissed off the guy next to me who paid $200. He Loved to Hate Me. He called me "Biggie Fries" all night, referencing Wendy's Value Meal. Built in 1920 by Christine Wetherill Stevenson, a wealthy heiress who wanted to build a space for her play about he life of Christ "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Calvary". No, it was "Pilgrimage Play" It burnt down in 1929 but rebuilt in 1931 to look like stone, making it feel like an ancient, rediscovered space. Anyway, it only hosted Christ plays (I would have called it "Nailed iT!") until the 1964 separation of church and state opened the venue to all arts. It was named after the county supervisor John Anson Ford, who was a champion of the arts. In the late 80's it was the "West Coast CBGB", hosting Ramones, Social D, X, Chili Peppers and Jane's Addiction. If you need more bands, just use your first three Wordle guesses: Tacos Marry Happy opened for Radio Caulk Barfy. It unveiled a $80 million renovation in 2017, so if it was gorgeous in 2006, I am sure it is Gorgeouser now. In 2019, the LA Phil took over, so now it is the little sister of the Bowl and Disney Concert Hall. In 2020, it had its centennial, marking 100 years since Stevenson first staged a Christ play in that canyon. To celebrate, the partygoers turned wine into pee.

I had previously seen advertisements for The Ford LA through various outlets, but I am frequently reminded of my introversion and often avoid driving through LA traffic. However, my wife wanted to check out the The Natural World of Studio Ghibli, and what a night it was! We have seen nearly all of Miyazaki's creations, but this was our first time watching "Howl's Moving Castle" in an outdoor theater. It was lovely! Fresh air, a few butterflies flying across the projector, stars in the night sky, and the iconic backdrop were some highlights to mention. The Ford is as fun as advertised, and I've already begun recommending it to my friends. This place has history, and you can feel it! Additionally, there isn't a bad seat in the house! We sat in Row P, and when I arrived, I took it all in. There's certainly a bit of magic here. The only negative is the parking. It's stacked parking, so you may end up waiting on other visitors to get to their cars before you can even think about moving. Otherwise, we already have plans to return to The Ford Theater!

The venue is located in DTLA on skid row... If you park nearby in one of the lots and stick to walking back and forth from the venue, you'll be okay. Don't recommend walking around this area especially if you're by yourself. Food: The food was scrumptious at the adjacent Prufrock Pizzeria. I would come back to this venue just to eat there beforehand. Service: It would've been nice if the venue employee was more proactive, there was a gaggle of people blocking the walkway and it took him a minute to tell them to move. After that, he just stared blankly at us after that until I asked where our assigned seats were. Ambiance: The actual venue was nice. It was intimate and you can see the performer even if you're in the back. We were on the right side towards the front, a few rows back. I appreciated that the mic level wasn't too loud even though we sat in front of the speaker; sometimes at comedy events it feels like the mic is SO LOUD that I have to wear earplugs. At this venue, the noise level was perfect.

I…read morediscovered this gem three years ago, before having my daughter, and spent every summer Friday night there, sitting on the lawn in front of the stage, soaking in the music. It's a true community event, and after a few visits, I started inviting my family to join. Fast forward to now--my daughter is three, and we recently attended the orchestra performance that featured Dr. Dre's music. I brought my entire family, and we all had an amazing time. It felt like a huge picnic under the LA sky. Bring your favorite snacks, food, blankets, and lawn chairs. They also have vendors selling food and drinks if you want to buy something there. The event is completely free--you just sign up for tickets in advance, which helps them gauge headcount. They also offer season passes with prime viewing areas if you want a reserved spot closer to the stage. The bathrooms are clean, the event is well organized, and there's convenient parking right underneath the venue--we paid just $10. It was a packed house and such a great vibe. I've even shared videos because the energy was so incredible. If you love live music, this is a must-try experience. It's family-friendly, fun, and a great way to spend an evening in the city. I truly hope my daughter grows to appreciate these kinds of events as much as I do.

Shoutout to the organizers of these summer series of free concerts at this venue. It's great for the community and everyone is very friendly. They do provide some seating here but you can also bring your own chairs. It's surrounded by commercial businesses and tall buildings with several restaurants nearby. We did notice that a lot of the local restaurants close after business hours (around 5p) but there were a few food trucks out front. The food took about 30-35 mins so if you have young ones be prepared. The venue is kid friendly and my boys enjoyed playing on the steps in the front to get their energy out. The open space, the vibe and the acoustics in the area were all such a vibe especially at night! My advice would be to follow grand performance on Instagram and catch one of these summer free concerts with the family, if possible. Make sure to bring a jacket because it does get a little chilly and windy when the sun goes down. As far as parking goes, we parked at the Broad Museum's parking structure on 2nd street for $19. They close their garage at 10:30p so make sure to give yourself about $15 minutes to walk a block to the garage before they close. Overall, I highly recommend checking out a concert here. It was such a great experience and my kids had a blast! This is such a great place for the community. Also note that the historic Angels Flight Railway Trolly is within walking distance and that will take down to the Grand Central Marketplace. We are movie lovers and I had heard great things about the store from friends and decided to give it a look. Upon entering the store, I was mortified by how cold and antisocial the staff was. Not only was a class taking place during my time at Whammy!, but the man behind the cash register was very cold and disinterested, as though patronizing the place was something me and my girlfriend should be ashamed of. Which seems a little bizarre considering I'm pretty sure the store needs real customers to pay real money for their products in order to continue working as a store. Maybe I'm wrong about that, but still. I asked if they do screenings at whammy's store, and the man behind the counter, simply, almost wordlessly, pointed me towards their screening calendar. While I very much enjoyed the goofy selection of VHS tapes offered at the store, as well as their avant-garde vinyl selection, not to mention the off-beat decorations adorning the store, I am really questioning whether I'll ever return to Whammy!. Wish I had a better experience, and am unsure if they even want me to come back. My girlfriend and I tried our best to lift our spirits from what was such a discouraging experience. Perhaps I caught the staff at Whammy! on the wrong day, but for now, I'm going to take a break from Whammy!, though I am still chuckling at the fun VHS tapes I picked up, despite not having a player.

Analog Media is mostly specific for the ancient medium of VHS video cassette tapes. Do they still manufacture video cassette machines? Even more esoteric would be to focus on Sony Betamax video cassette tapes.  There is also a very small vinyl record  and movie posters section. Whammy also has movie showings that no commerical movie theatre would take on since it would interest a very focused audience. Limited seating of about 30. Tickets are sold through their website as well as a monthly calendar of events.  Tonight's theme is Dirty Looks, which delves into two disparate themes, one in the New York City Camp Drag scene and the other in San Francisco featuring a dream-like pastiche of the working class strugglIng to make sense of a surrealistic world.  I will post screen shot synopes of both performances from the Whammy for those who want further info.  Tom Rubnitz's Psykho III The Musical, a camp drag version of Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho was droll and light heartedly entertaining in a home movie style much like John Waters' Pink Flamingo.  But it was a tough slog to watch  Curt McDowell's Taboo much like David Lynch's Eraserhead that was so ridiculously boring that my friends and I had to leave midway through.  I'm glad that Whammy is doing its thing. It's a store that seems transported from an alternate universe or that my passing through the gated portal transported me to that alternate reality. Enter from the rear of the building on Rampart and not Sunset Blvd. 4 stars for being an ultra customized reference center for the video specialist.
