On the right side is the takeout area, where you can see the staff preparing everything right in front of you - from the perfectly chickens, steaks, ribs, to the freshly made rice. Their shrimp in garlic sauce is amazing as well as their salads, the dressing is the best, it should be bottled and sold. It's an experience just watching them cook! The food is always hot and ready, and the staff are incredibly friendly and efficient. We usually call ahead to place our order, and it's typically ready in about 20-30 minutes. Been coming here for many years and 28 BBQ is still one of my favorite Portuguese bbq spots. It's a super casual, local-feel type of place. I've mostly ordered takeout and it's typically a quick and easy process. We always get the BBQ SPARE (PORK) & SHORT (BEEF) RIBS COMBO that comes on a huge mound of delicious yellow rice with your choice of fries, salad or beans. The meat is usually spot on (juicy and tender) although occasionally the ribs have a well-done charred cook. The short ribs are amazing and we always get them prepared medium rare. The juices from the meat seep into the rice below and it's mouth-wateringly good. It's a good portion for the price and we always have leftovers. If your looking for authentic Portuguese barbecue and you don't want to travel to Newark then look no further. This place isn't much to look at, in fact it could use a facelift, but that being said the food is delicious, the portions are a nice size, and the prices are decent. The staff is friendly and attentive. I ordered their BBQ Chicken, it's marinated, seasoned well, and grilled over open flame and they use real wood, which keeps the chicken very juicy. I also ordered their yellow rice and black beans which was a nice accompaniment and delicious. They do have a dining room, but my review is based strictly on take out. The service was fast and efficient. This place is good for kids and they do have outdoor seating. I did not get dessert but I know they're known for their Tres Leche cake. This is a revisit review. After a subpar food experience the first time, my experiences after that have been very delightful. I always for the barbecue short ribs- medium. Ribs are always juicy and tender. Love it when there's just a little bit of fat in it. Ribs pairs really nice with rice. I always like to add the hot sauce. Perfect combination. Recently I tried their T-Bone steak. I was shocked by the size and portion. It's one order served on a catering tray. Huge steak. It was juicy and succulent. My go to spot now. I was I could leave 0 stars My family and I were in town on Tuesday July 1st around 1pm. Worst experience that I ever had, as soon as we walked it the location the server or whatever can be called a lady with glasses gave us a bad look and attitude. We were starving so order a side of rice for my 5 years old boy while we were looking the menu. Kids don't lie the rice was bland with no flavor at all. The server was kind of rushing us to order standing in front of us like a robot with only one couple eating in the restaurant. We decided to order just 1/2 chicken with salad to share. Honestly just to feel the bad atmosphere we lost appetite. Surprise! the chicken came out raw was bleeding with all this uncomfortable situation Other server came up to convince me that the chicken wasn't raw, good luck try to convince somebody else. I asked to talk to the owner or manager but neither was there. My kid was talking aloud how bad the food was, all the employees were listening and got uncomfortable. We got up and ready to leave I didn't really want to pay cause we didn't eat, the bill was $22 so I just left $20 on the table. When we were walking out of the restaurant the employees were running behind us yelling excuse me excuse me you have to pay the bill. I answered. Yes, absolutely. If I would had good experience, but we started arguing back and forth which an employee should never do that with a customer not matter what. Pretty good Portuguese BBQ we order take out from here every now and then. I haven't been going that frequently because they don't deliver but now I just recently saw they are on the DoorDash list of restaurants now so problem solved.... I pretty much always order the same thing BBQ chicken and pork spare ribs combo with rice and black beans, pretty good deal for $19.00 lots of food. More then enough for 2 people so we always have left overs. The food is consistently good and the order is always correct. This was the first time I ordered from here online and DoorDash even took the time to call and ask me if I wanted black or red beans with my order and then they were here with the delivery more then 10 minutes before the eta. You are about to uncover a little hidden gem! Prepare for authentic, delicious home cooked style food. My family has been getting food from here for a long time, like 10+ years. And will probably order a few trays at least once a month. Some favorites are the garlic shrimp, roasted chicken and the ribs with a side of black beans. All the platters come with either black beans, rice, fries or salad. All of the sides are great but after the fries get cold they really don't reheat well. If you have a 30+ minute drive to get home with your order I would opt for rice or beans with the platters. The menu isn't very extensive, just big enough that everyone can find something they like, but trust that everything on it is incredible. These portions are huge so don't over order unless you are a fan of leftovers. Hot tip! Prepare to wait. They will probably tell you close to 45 minutes but it will usually take longer than that. Not really the biggest deal unless you are in a huge rush. They have tables to sit and wait and a cute little outdoor section with tables. I've only ever gotten take out but the outdoor patio seems like a nice place to sit and enjoy lunch on a sunny day. They do have a parking lot but it isn't huge so depending on when you go, it might be filled up. Do wish they offered that in a single plate, so kind of a downside. There are two entrances, one for the sit down restaurant, and another that's more fast casual where you pick up pre ordered food. Definitely recommended using both the hot sauce and the bbq sauce on your food, the flavors mix nicely with the marinade they put on the meat. Only downside for me is that the food is very heavy and leaves me feel a bit greasy. Not terribly, but definitely need to drink tea after eating to help digest. So we went to 28BBQ for my birthday dinner. Gotta say that my wife and I were disappointed. Wife ordered the combo chicken/spare ribs, and the ribs were weird cuts of ribs, like the ends, but the chicken was fine. I had the brazilian beef, requested medium rare. The meat was tough and had lots of fat on the edges that needed to be trimmed. They forgot to bring our salads until we asked for them. Also ordered the garlic shrimp, and it tasted like powdered garlic instead of freshlly minced garlic. Neither of us is impressed with a giant mound of rice. Any place can do that. So much potential for great BBQ but unfortunately this place is always a hit or a miss for me. I've been here several times for lunch, sampling everything from their BBQ chicken to their pork and beef ribs. For my first visit, I ordered the BBQ chicken combo and it was AMAZING. Skipped breakfast that morning in preparation for my feast! Unfortunately this time around, a hefty portion of the chicken was overcooked and dry, while other pieces were extremely salty. I've been back to 28 BBQ on a few other occasions and the meats always turn out either perfectly cooked or dry/over charred, and salty (mainly the chicken). Both the pork and beef ribs are great. I tend to go with the beef ribs (personal preference) even though they're a little fatty. Get a sampler of everything if this is your first visit! Prices for the BBQ seem high but portions are plentiful. One combo can feed at least two people! Great place to share a low key/casual meal with your date or go with a group and share a few combos! Takeout is also an excellent choice. The restaurant is split into 2 sections: one section for takeout (where the kitchen is located) and the other for dine-in. Dine-in area is very casual with a few TVs and some fridges where you can grab your own sodas. In the fridge you'll also find some desserts like flan and tres leche cake. They may be using barbeque techniques in the kitchen, but the food here falls short on so many levels. Where do I begin? The only positive thing I can say about the food at this restaurant is they give you very generous portion sizes. Even the half orders are more than enough for one very hungry person. Unfortunately, what you are getting is very large portions of pretty terrible food. The chicken and ribs were incredibly dry on the inside and out. There was little to no seasoning on any of the food. Even the rice was bland. The beans did turn out to be pretty decent. They weren't spectacular, but compared to the rest of what I tried, it was practically five stars. How this place has to nerve to call themselves a BBQ place is beyond me. Even a novice cook in their back yard could prepare their dishes better. The pricing here is on par with other Portuguese BBQ places I have been to. I would say you get big portion sizes for the price you pay, but large plates are pretty much status quo for restaurants like this. Unfortunately, I would not even pay $5 dollars for the food I received here. This is the first dining venue I've ever been to where I actually had to request water. I thought that was pretty standard, but I guess not. Our waitress was not friendly or outgoing. It just felt like she was going through the motions. Motions which apparently do not include taking drink orders or refilling empty water glasses. Even after we finished eating, almost 15 minutes passed before anyone came to clear our plates from the table. What makes this all even sadder is that there were only 3 other tables being served in the entire place. There are some pretty awkward pieces of art and photography on the walls, but nothing that really embodies Portugal or Barbeques. It just feels like they hung up some stuff that was in somebody's basement. The furniture is incredibly cheap feeling and cheap looking. There's a decent sized lot right in front of the entrance, but the stalls are a little narrow. Very disappointing experience as I stood in line with my father for over 2 hours to give my mom a meal for Mother's Day. We love coming to this place, we order every week since the pandemic started. Please know myself and my family are very thankful for the people inside who prepared all this food for us. However, what I couldn't believe was how dishonest they were to customers who placed their orders hours ago. Before getting in line, I gave the lady my name who was walking around asking for order names. I should have known then if she didn't call my name after the first hour... the order was never properly taken down when we first called. As we got close to the front (over an hour later), people rushed out of line to give their names or walked around the side to order food... and many got their orders before us. It seemed like their was a trend in place when you walked up to the window, nobody's order was ready or written down prior. How does that make sense? You could see inside that numerous bags were just sitting there, not to mention how uncomfortable it was to have people not social distancing and on top of you. We patiently waited in line with respect to the owners, when we got to the window we gave them our names. Waited another 30 mins to have them rewrite our entire order and waited again.
