Checked this out quite some time ago on a trip to NJ. Overall it's an amazing stop for some Barbeque. Not the que we get in Texas, but still very good for Portuguese BBQ, which you don't see too often. The people that run it are very nice and they give you what seems like a monster portion. Two could eat off one dinner and be full easy. Spice and flavors are all great too, my only complaint is the salt. It wasn't to the point of me not eating it or really being that bothered, I can just tell when I need to lay off sodium for a few days and this is one place that will do it to you. Still though, the salt isn't that big a deal, the food is still lip smacking good. They seem to keep Spanish TV on too, which is great as I don't see that much in NJ. Keeps me entertained. read more

I have been going to this place for years. The food is very good. I have recommended them to any number of friends and professional business associates. However, as of late... I have become very disappointed with the customer service. Two incidents back to back. 1. I call my order in and was told my pickup would be ready in 25 minutes. When I arrived, they never created my order, when I explained the situation the one lady... a little bit older had an attitude, and vigorously told me that I called the wrong place. Absolute terrible customer service. she should have apologized and filled my order with some sort of prioritization. after I showed them on my cell phone the time of the call and the right phone number She continued to speak in Spanish about me and the situation assuming that I didn't understand what she was saying. I speak and understand Spanish very well although I am not of Spanish or Latino origin, she was totally disgusting and self-absorbed. Terrible. 2. The second issue was about three months later I decided to give them another chance, this time they did fill my order, but forgot my black beans, I was very disappointed when I got home. The beans were not a big deal but on the second consecutive time, they didn't get my order right. This is not a good trend. I will no longer go there. I'm so disappointed that I forgot to take pictures of the food that I just purchased from here. This place is great. Everything is cooked to order and is fresh. Never had a bad experience at 28 BBQ. I always get take out because it seems a little tight in there and not too private but I think there is a restaurant side that I have never been to. The food is reasonably priced and you get a lot of it. I've had the clams, garlic shrimp, chicken and rice, beef ribs , garlic chicken. I've tried almost everything over about 8 years. When moving out of Newark, one thing my family and I were all going to miss was the amazing churrasqueiras: BBQ joints known for pumping out amazing barbecue chicken. Fortunately, Somerset County has a Churrasqueira Champion in 28 BBQ. It's the trifecta of amazing: the food is great, the servings are large, and the price is reasonable. My family digs their BBQ Chicken, Pork Cutlets, and BBQ Short Ribs. These all come with a side of yellow rice (with a few veggies here and there), and fries or beans. While everything mentioned above is awesome, my favorite dish is their Cheesesteak Sandwich. It's not Philly-style where the meat is minced into small pieces. Here, you'll get a thin, whole piece of steak that packs a lot of wonderful smoky BBQ flavor. The cheese, onions, peppers, and soft bread make every bite decadent. The only thing that could make this bad boy better is if they served it on a Portuguese Roll instead of the generic bun they use. I ordered from here on a recommendation by my SIL for food that is reasonably priced and will feed a small crowd. I ordered ribs, shrimp in garlic sauce, and chicken for take out. I got there to pick up and it was still being cooked, which was ok with me bc it would be fresh! I had a set up at home to keep food warm. First off, I did not realize I would be getting a ginormous tray of beans. I had to laugh bc I think I had enough beans for 20 pple. Don't get me wrong - they were delicious but wow. Haha. Everything else - chicken, shrimp, and ribs were really good. Note - do not put these on sterno trays bc they can and WILL dry out. Better to have guests eat it soon after it's ordered but don't risk it by overheating it. The staff at the restaurant were awesome and even offered to carry it out to my truck. Got the sausage platter with rice and salad. $16 for 2 pounds of rice and 2 pieces of sausage sliced up very thin and spread out. Sausage was very very dry and way too salty. Rice was average. Best thing was salad that was just good and standard. I went here once before over 2 years ago and said I'd never go back. I did this time thinking something changed but it didn't. They are very good we don't have drive far for this kind of food anymore! Delicious and chicken is moist mist of the time. I guess depend when you go! We told the waitress we want the chicken moist! No dryed out, pork ribs also! We got there about 6:40 so plenty time! They very busy with Yoco orders! We ate inside! Appitizer shrimp and clams! The chicken combo with pork ribs! With rice and French fries, side of black beans! 3 of us and still brought home left overs! Portions are great! I think they need to add some more items to menu, like pork roast! I was very dissatisfied with the service and the quality of the food in this establishment. My friend, a Portuguese native, and I were looking for a good place to introduce others to Portuguese cuisine. However, we were sorely let down. Upon arriving, my friend and I were quickly seated and given menus. After which, the waitress ignored us for nearly half an hour. The place was mostly empty and there was really no excuse for the wait. After the waitress finally came over, ordered our drinks and food. We asked for tap water and she instead brought us bottled water (increasing our bill) -- and she didn't even bother to bring us drinking glasses. We had to get up from the table and walk over to her in order to ask for the glasses even though she could clearly see us and knew that we desired some service. There was continued poor service through out the meal, though it did get better when we got a different waitress. The food itself was decent. We shared a full order of the pork ribs and a salad. The portions are large, but the meat was a little fatty and was lightly seasoned on the outside making it not very flavorful. The bread served with the meal was bad; being old, soft and flavorless. The salad was plain and simple. After the meal, we ordered espresso. We think they poured regular coffee into the espresso cup while still charging us the $2.50 for the effort. My friend simply refused to drink it, we paid the bill and left. Without the extremely poor, and frankly rude, service I would say this is a 2-3 star Churrasqueria; mostly for the quantity/price value -- but with better options in the area I don't think I will be returning. read more

The waitress and front of the house make this place on the Do Not Call a restaurant list. Very disappointed. We came in on a Saturday afternoon for lunch, the place was empty. Two (2) other tables (a family of 4 and a couple on first date) and waited 15 minutes before a waitress even came over (I was ready to leave but my friend liked it and had a coupon, I think and he was buying). We ordered. No "thank you" no nice and east exchange, just indignation. "Why am I here?" i muttered to myself as I tried to be a gracious and pleasant guest to my friend who thought so highly of this dump. It was flithy, had no atmosphere. A soccer game on, it was not even in English....I felt as if I were intruding, but I had a good conversation with my friend and paid attention to his issues, which were far more important than this meal. After we finished, (he took some of his home - I could not be bothered, gave it to him) we asked for a doggy bag and the check....not exaggerating....30 minutes (my head was going to explode, but I listened and tried to focus on listening to my friend who was going through a tough breakup) she finally walks out with the bag of food and our check....he pulled out his credit card and I said, "no way, let me get this", and handed her a few $20s and told her to keep the change! I knew I was going to revenge that bad experience with this message. Note: I did not stiff the server. The bill was $26.00 (rip off) + $6.00 for soda and 7% NJ sales tax so i ended up leaving decent tip...so I get it. Working in restaurant is tough...but this place is an angry spot...it appears to be family and the women who work in the front are the worst - - angry, New Jersey people should not be in the hospitality business, especially in the front dealing with customers!!! Who knew what was going on the back...lot of smoke and where there is smoke there is fire so maybe this whole thing is a tinder box of angry people - - d-uh, maybe if you were nicer to people, you have more than 8 people in your 60-80 person restaurant for a Saturday lunch at noon. Good food, however the service was terrible. It took about 20 minutes for waitress (with an attitude mind you) take our order and 35 minutes to get our food. What bothered me the most was watching the waitresses take breaks with no one in sight even watching one have lunch, with a bottle of wine (yes drinking on the job) right in front of everyone. I would have given 4 stars because I love the way they make their BBQ chicken. But three stars because the platters have way too much rice. Other than that, the price is very reasonable. $15 for a BBQ chicken platter which basically comes with a cut up bone-in chicken and the yellow rice. The restaurant itself is not that nice and needs to be updated. It's your typically "fast-takeout" place. This is my first time coming here. Usually go to the Portuguese bbq place at Clark, nj and that place serves delicious food and was highly recommended by a family friend who is Portuguese. The place inside looks like a family, small town establishment. Which is fine because if you go to places like this, you go for the food and not the ambiance. The waitresses are nice although they don't know what root beer is when I asked them if they served it. Anyway on to the food, the portions are generous which is expected from any of these bbq establishments. We ordered the Portuguese steak with egg with rice and French fries. The steak did have a nice smoky flavor, but I felt like the one at Clark's was still better. There french fries was just normal run of the mill french fries. Unlike the ones at Clark which are crunch and delicious with seasonings. We also ordered a full rack of pork ribs with rice and a side of black beans. The rice and beans where good. The pork ribs was alright although it didn't taste like it was freshly made. Maybe it was cooked yesterday?sort of tasted like it. Anyway the place was cheap, our bill came up to $36 or so plus bottled drinks for 3 people. Not bad, but I think I'll stay devoted the Portuguese bbq place at Clark. read more

One complaint, only one complaint, everything- well not dessert and coffee- was too salty! This food was really freaking good! I had a half portion of BBQ beef ribs cooked medium-rare (they ended up being pretty rare though) with black beans and rice and it was sooooooo yummy! I'm visiting from Texas, and this was the best food I've had in New jersey so far. My boyfriend had the Portuguese sausage sandwich with fries and he said it was good as well (although the fries were just normal fries). The portions were HUGE!!!! I'm so glad I got a half order (for $9), a whole order could have easily fed two people. It was the perfect place to go with my starving boyfriend. I took half of mine home, and can't wait to eat the leftovers when I'm finally hungry again. The atmosphere is very blah - this isn't a hip place, but with such good food, I really didn't care. The waitress wasn't particularly attentive when we came in, but there seems to be two halves of the restaurant, and although we were one of two couples on the left side, I don't know what was going on on the other side. Also, she seemed intent on getting me exactly what I wanted and that was nice. Our food arrived pretty quickly after ordering. Overall, delicious food, and an amazing value. Churrasqueria at its finest. The portions are HUGE and well worth the money. We often go here for lunch and I'm sure it's family style dining but we always end up getting individual dishes. Get food from here if you are hungry! Lots of food for a great price. We usually get the whole chicken that goes great with the flavorful yellow rice and beans. The porkcubes are also my favorite! I wish they gave you Portuguese chorizo with it, like the original picadinho, but I'll keep getting it. I was not a fan of the short ribs. If you are picking a lot of food bring a box. Food is excellent, prices are realistic and the service is good too. Getting a tray of chocked with rice and a side salad is a deal and never disappoints. Food is good. I got the half pork ribs with fries and rice. Service is horrible though. I went in late afternoon when it wasn't too busy. There were 2 other tables occupied. There were two waitresses tending to the tables but they also spent a good amount of time just chatting with each other. Not once did they fill up my empty glass of water or come over to see how I was doing. When I finished eating, I finally got the attention of the waitress with a wave and motioned for the bill as well as a refill of my water. If you're in the mood for tasty Portuguese cuisine that will fill your tummy and won't leave your wallet empty, then this is the place to be. Sort of hidden from the Main Street in Bound Brook, it's larger inside than what appears to the eye. One side is take out and the other side is the sit down restaurant part. They are very accommodating to large parties, children, and BYOB. I have to say their signature yellow rice mixed with vegetables is probably my favorite. I am not particularly a rice person but this place does it right! Dishes are enormous, thank god for take home containers. Their BBQ chicken and ribs are cooked well, appetizers including garlic shrimp and clams are tasty, and service is quick. My only complaint is their side of vegetables, mainly the sliced carrots are cold, salty, and taste like pickles. Not a fan of them at all. Others in my party agreed. Otherwise, 28 BBQ is an all around comfortable and delicious place to get your fingers dirty and enjoy a big hearty meal. read more

What fantastic barbeque! If you want four plus flavors, don't look here. If you want terrific food, that people are lined up to buy, this is definitely your place. I agree with everyone; so much food, for your money. The only reason I dropped one star? So little table space. If you expect to sit down and eat, you may need good timing. But clearly they are fast, clean, friendly, and handle (food) volume. So many take out orders while we ate; many people, getting whole trays. Obviously a well known secret. A friend randomly suggested this restaurant. I was very pleasantly surprised. When you come in the front side, you're immediately hit with the smell of charcoal grilled meat goodness. I usually decide between the half-bbq chicken or the beef ribs over Spanish rice. The meats are sauceless but adequately seasoned aka DELICIOUS. The meals are a terrific value at around 8 bucks IIRC. This place is jumping! It's so busy I was told 30+ minutes for my order. A whole hour later I get my order .. glad we wasn't in a hurry. Either way, they should have apologized to everyone who waited past their time, or at least give us a free dessert to show some appreciation. But I guess since they get business they forgot to make sure the customer is totally pleased. I ordered a pork ribs and chicken combo with a side of short ribs. Rice and black beans and fries. Still waiting on my freshly made order. The smell of grilled meat fills the air. The patrons display utter patience for their meals. Leaving with 2 - 4 trays each!... generous portion of food, I truly hope I came on a good day and get a delicious meal like all the other reviewers..I Will provide an update once I give it a taste... ok I got my order, everything looks and smells great! Went here for a friend's birthday, and overall, it was a pretty good experience. The Good: - You can bring your own wine or beer. - The menu is simple and straightforward, the meat is fall-off-the-bone tender, and portions are generous. We each took home about half of our meal. - The service is super-quick and attentive. I got there late and they got me my food in almost no time. - The pickled veggies and black olives are a nice addition to the meal. The Bad: - SALT. I don't like very salty food, and this definitely left me feeling thirsty. The rice was especially salty, but then again I don't much like yellow rice anyway. The beans also tasted like they were from an industrial-sized can, but for the price, I guess that's pretty much to be expected. Which brings me to my next point... - If you order water, you can only get a bottle of water, not a glass or pitcher of regular ice water. They explained that the tap water there wasn't very good, but seriously - you're a restaurant, you should do something about that. Get a filter or something. - While the portions of meat that my friends got had very little waste, my chicken had a deceptive amount of bone, skin, and fat, so I felt that they got their money's worth more than I did.
