The tech explained how the old external drains were clogged in my old 1950s home and that nowadays companies are building internal systems to catch the water. Like an internal french drain, under the basement flooring. It looked like a promising system, and the deal they made ($7700) seemed worth it. They installed a "speed drain" to catch the water in the outside basement stairwell, replacing the simple circular drain that was there. This new drain funneled the water into the internal french drain, which also grabbed water from exterior holes that they drilled (controlled water collection). The drain led to a two sump / two pump system in series with two 2" pipes going out of the house. Solid. Except... The first time the basement flooded, I took a closer look at what was done. How could there by any flooding?! I have two sumps! As it turned out, the second sump in the line never got water to it. The speed drain only had a 1" pipe going into the system. I'm not a physicist, but I know enough math to realize that 1" going into the system is going to overwhelm a system designed to pump out of two 2" pipes. I called the company and had them fix it. At a cost, of course. They argued that it wasn't a bad design. The best part is when the actual installers came out and started telling me that the system I had was horribly done (seems like a trend). I let him talk a while before I told him that his company had done the job. He smirked and was quiet after that. He redid the speed drain and installed two 1" pipes. The math still didn't add up, but ok, there were other entrances for water into the system. The second time the basement flooded, I watched the water in the speed drain keep rising, and rising, and rising. How could that be?! There were two 1" pipes now! As it turns out, the system was poorly designed, specifically the sumps being in series. I was having problems because the first sump pump died. Naturally the water flows to the next one, right? No, it doesn't. The design forced the water intake to have to push all the water in the first sump into the second. Imagine rainwater coming in at a pipe in the bottom of a sump, and having to push all the water above it into a pipe at the top of the sump. It just wasn't working very well. The water, not having enough force to push itself up, went back into the stairwell, then under the door into my house. I'm left scratching my head wondering if Basement Detective even knows how water works, and if they've ever actually designed a successful system. Needless to say, I won't be calling them to come take a look again. Lest they rip up the all floors again, tell me that my system was a horrible design, and charge me to redo it again. No thanks.

He recommended three testing companies. We got the testing done and Wes reviewed the report and indicated that the mold levels didn't merit remediation. He explained thoroughly the process and expected value, and helped us decide that the potential gain probably wasn't worth the cost. I actually had him do a site visit (very reasonable trip cost), just to be sure, and it confirmed our decision. Net it out, integrity and ethics. Would be my first call for any job in his category.

Michael Wiggs,…read moreowner/project manager, was assigned to my project and he was/is extremely unprofessional, nothing was on time, disrespectful behavior towards myself during disagreements and provided horrible customer service throughout the entire project. I would not highly recommend working with him and in fact if you've already received services from him please seek legal counsel. The contract I signed stated that this business is LICENSED, BONDED and INSURED in DC, which it is not. The license provided on my contract expired in 2006 per DCRA website. This inaccurate information is fraud. Michael Wiggs consistently reneged on many of the contract terms which were previously negotiated at the time I signed the contract. My contract was signed May 15,2020. The contract stated the projected start date was June 22, 2020. Work did not begin until August 10th and a new contract was not created. In addition, the contract's projected duration of the project was 2 weeks, weather permitting. My project was not completed until November 11th (4 months for a small bathroom remodel). In my opinion this was due to Mr. Wiggs poor project management. The first 6 weeks of the project I was out of my Condo because this is my only bathroom and the financial hardships placed on me at a time when COVID-19 was shutting down the DC area put a ton of stress on me. I was paying for living arrangements I could not utilize and I did not budget to be gone for the amount of time I had to be. I never received any compensation for this failure of Michael Wiggs to maintain the project timeline. When I returned to my unit I only had a toilet. There was no vanity, sink, or shower installed. One of my allotments was pocketed without a service or product being given. The contract mapped out 6 disbursements of money. However, once the project was almost half way through I was told by my contractor they could only withdraw 2 times from my loan and we needed to withdraw asap before my money was gone. Lastly, in the contract under "items not included" permit cost was stated, but within my line items permit was listed at a cost of $0. I eventually had to have DCRA close out my permits because he refused to close them out. There was always consistent miscommunication and lack of accountability from Michael Wiggs business, every issue was met with contempt instead of trying to find a solution. After all of this occurred, Michael Wiggs attempted to bully me by having a lawyer, Perry L. Foreman Jr., reach out to me to settle in the amount of $1,080.77 or they would move to sue me to obtain what they believe is what they are owed. Please understand as a consumer an unlicensed business cannot sue you in a jurisdiction that they aren't licensed. That's literally the purpose of the license so that the business can be protected by local laws. I did not give in to this tactic and instead I reached out to DCRA and the Consumer Protection Agency. Both of these local government offices have been extremely disappointing because they act as if they can't take action on the exact situations they were established to perform. The intentions of this review are to make all consumers aware of his business practices, understand local government offices will not be of any assistance and the best way to resolve these issues is to not get involved with them. When looking for a contractor please contact a property management company for a referral or obtain a referral from a trusted family member/friend. Make sure to obtain a business license, business insurance and scope of work from all contractors.

They painted the whole house and and repaired a part of the foundation that had been destroyed during the recent earthquake. The quality of the work was fantastic and I have no complaints.
