When I called them they moved me up to an emergency appointment to fix my issue. They came on a Sunday when it was raining and dug up and installed water pipes to drain rainwater away from my basement. We had a water intrusion issue last summer in our basement due to issues on our foundation wall and poor grade resulting in water pooling under our porch. tl;dr - VDE is the correct choice. They are honest, efficient, and thorough. They do great work at a great price. Jose and his team are wonderful people who have helped me save our home. I am a first time home owner. I did not have much money left over after the closing and even less understanding of how to take care of my property. Before we put in an offer, we had an inspection. Our home inspector pointed out one thing that needed addressing - the grading on the side of our house was way too high but other than that it "had good bones". We did not know the full extent of the damage that had been done to the house because of the grading and drainage issues. I could not afford to do a lot of work on my home's water and erosion issues without help from a county Flood Mitigation Assistance Program (FMAP). The county had a list of approved interventions that they would help us pay for but it had to be up to their specifications... and there was a lot of documentation that I needed to provide. I contacted VDE and Jose came out to give an assessment and proposal. He did not try to scare us into getting some huge, excessive project that would cost more than we could afford. He gave me a realistic and honest answer as to what needed to be done and a reasonable price. The documentation they provided was exceptionally detailed with a well defined explanation of each step of the project, the materials they would use, why they would use those materials, and what the purpose of each step of the project was. Their turn around time is amazing and the work is impeccable. When everything was done, the county came out to inspect the work and it passed with flying colors! We were able to fix the water damage and prevent further erosion without going into debt. I actually look forward to working with VDE again in the future. We hired Virginia Drainage to address a water infiltration issue in our basement. They were extremely communicative, reliable, and did excellent work. We were worried about damage to our bushes outside (as another company had told us some would need to be removed to provide them access to the part of the exterior they needed to work on), but Virginia Drainage was able to do the work in a way where the bushes didn't need to be removed and were protected. The area where the work was done outside actually looks better than it did before they started. Their price was reasonable and they were a pleasure to deal with throughout. read more

We went with Virginia Drainage to fix a yard drainage issue on the side of our house. The company installed a two french drains- one at the top of our fence line (due to a hill issue-the rain water run off would go through our fence and erode our side with mulch) - this one was covered with river rock and an underground French drain on the grass. Both were installed very professionally, fresh sod and mulch added, and the crew were so careful with our yard. Very easy scheduling, excellent communication, and very fair pricing. I got my sidewalk lifted back into place and they extended my downspout to the yard. They started early in the morning and I didn't even realized they had arrived and started working. I had erosion and drainage issues around my house, which is located on a downward slope. The last person who lived here didn't know what they were doing, and everything they did, is bad for the house. We have moisture issues going into the foundation, so I know i had to bite the bullet and get a full erosion system with some water proofing. I had quotes from 5 erosion/waterproofing companies, because it just seemed so pricey and each solution didn't satisfy me. In comes VA Drainage, I am glad I kept looking and it took 5 quotes b/c finally, I got what I thought was a complete solution, and not only that, at a very fair price. Erosion seems to be hot business because the companies I got a quote from, said they could not start work for another 2 months or so, and won't negotiate much. Note that the other erosion companies, I found mostly from yelp, they were all the most highest rated for around here, so VA Drainage is the best out of all of them. With this company, I got the best solution, great service, they showed up on time, communicated well, and the best price. You can't ask for anything more than that. They really went above and beyond as well, mulching my yard and doing some extras to make my yard look nice without even being part of the quote. I also had some extras done, and the addition to the proposed quote was very reasonable. Some companies will charge exorbitant prices b/c they've opened it up, and says it's cheaper and easier to do it right then, but this company asked for very reasonable prices that I happily said yes to. They also do some other services outside of erosion/drainage, and I'll certainly contact them back. Another really cool thing are the owners also do the work with their workers. Jose and Juan both own the company, they come out and give the quote, and they were on the job site sitting, taking things apart, and cleaning. They are apart of their own work crew, and when their boss gets their hands dirty, it inspires their workers to do a good job too. The fact that he and his cousin do the work also saves them from having to hire a couple of extra folks. He also directs them to do a great job. All too often for other contractors I've worked with, they have a professional guy come and really sell you on their proposal and quote. Then they don't even show up to the job, and their workers do the work without any guidance and it doesn't match what they told you, but it's already all finished so you don't want to deal with it. Here, Jose went over the entire job with me while on-site several times to make sure we were on the same page. We also made some modifications and he was all good with it, very easy to work with. They did an excellent job, were prompt, and now when it rains, I don't need to fret about moisture issues with my house. Wow! My husband and I, and our neighbors, are so impressed with the highly professional and artistic work done by Virginia Drainage and Erosion. They completely replaced our driveway, adding much needed drainage not only for the driveway itself but redirecting water coming out of the gutters. They installed a new flagstone pathway, built natural stone retaining walls with LED lights, which not only looks incredible but stops the water seeping into our basement, and poured a cement slab under the deck, making it much more useful space. They also cleaned up the landscaping with weed barriers, topsoil, and reseeding. It was not cheap, but nobody else's quotes came close to Virginia Drainage and Erosion, and we're convinced that the quality of their work is equal to or greater than any other contractor in this area regardless of price. Jose (Inspector) is very professional, informative and artistic. He was really easy to communicate with regarding projects and he provided excellent solutions which were literally superior to what we initially imagined. What really struck us was Jose and Virginia Drainage and Erosion's attention to details; we asked if several large rocks on our property could be kept as part of the landscaping and Jose not only found the perfect spot but made sure that the rock set with the best view. Another example of attention to detail was rounding off the sharp edges of stones capping the new retaining walls, improving their appearance and safety. We highly recommend Virginia Drainage and Erosion for their excellent work and remediation of the serious erosion and drainage caused by a huge maple tree in our back garden. The tree was removed and stump ground down. Then their crew got to work. The back garden and patio was totally transformed into a beautiful usable and more accessible space. The stairs and planter beds on either side of the stairs was removed. The pavers were then used to seamlessly connect the two walls on either side of the remaining space. You would never guess the patio wall had been divided before. Then a beautiful retaining wall was constructed and our new garden area was created. Our home is a 60-year-old ranch that had been developing water infiltration issues in the basement. The water issues included: damp basement walls; efflorescence residue on basement walls; occasional water seepage along the basement wall/floor interface; foundation drain water backup during heavy rains; minor basement wall cracks, and soil subsidence in areas around the house perimeter. We decided to identify a contractor that could best address these issues before they became problems. Knowing that the project would be quite extensive we contacted a number of water proofing contractors to access the existing conditions, make recommendations, and provide proposals. All of the contractors contacted agreed that preventative measures needed to be taken but provided different approaches in their proposals on how to remedy the water infiltration issue and at varying costs. After careful review of all of the estimates we found that the proposal, completed by Mr. Jose Montalvo was the best at addressing and fixing the underlying problem at the source on the outside of the house, the most cost effective, and provided the most value added. Jose's proposal was well written and by far the most detailed and comprehensive when compared to all of the other submissions. Broken down into stand-alone work elements with associated costs, Jose's proposal was also broad in scope covering the electrical and HVAC sub-tasks associated with the project as well as landscaping and hardscaping options not covered or addressed in other proposals. Jose's team started the project on schedule with site prep, equipment and materials staging. The construction crew would arrive on time, conduct themselves in a professional manner, were well organized, and respectful of the neighborhood. The site (yard) was kept clean, well-organized, and materials, refuse, and equipment would be delivered/removed in a timely fashion. Daily crew size would vary depending on the task at hand. Large crews during major site work to minimize unavoidable disruptions during large excavation work and smaller crews during finish work. Excellent balance of crew size and requisite site work. It was obvious that this team, under Jose's leadership has worked together many years based on the well-choreographed and seamless manner with which they worked. I was impressed at how focused the team was on delivering a quality product. In addition to ensuring that all construction activities were conducted in accordance with standard industry practice, minor details would receive as much attention as the major construction activities. The entire team obviously takes pride in their craft and are focused on providing superior quality service. It should be noted that during the excavation of the perimeter of the house breeches in the existing water proofing were clearly visible when the exterior walls were exposed and the foundation drain was found to be 100 percent blocked. These conditions were entirely consistent with Jose's assessment made during his initial survey and a testament to his knowledge and understanding of foundation and water management issues. Upon completion of the waterproofing project, we asked Jose if he would be able to replace our existing asphalt driveway and upgrade our patio. We reviewed his design proposal and gave the go ahead. As with the foundation waterproofing project, Jose and his team exceeded our expectations. The driveway and patio were completed on schedule, on cost, and with minimal impact. Having experience in overseeing and managing numerous construction projects and working with large and small construction contractors throughout the course of my career I have found Jose's team to be a truly exceptional contractor. I found them to be extremely responsive and agile while also having the wherewithal and capacity to bring the requisite resources to manage and execute a large project. BLUF: Do yourself a favor and call Virginia Drainage and Erosion if you're looking for landscaping, hardscaping, tree removal, or drainage work. You won't regret hiring them. Once in a blue moon, if you're lucky, you'll encounter contractors that know exactly what they're doing, know exactly what you want, and go above and beyond. Jose and his team are those guys. I bought a house and had a number of issues to deal with right off the bat - a fair amount of my yard had eroded away due to poor drainage, a large tree had fallen in my backyard, one the paths to my house was uneven and I saw an Amazon delivery person trip on it, some of my downspouts were draining near the foundation, and some of my other of downspouts were draining via corrugated tubes that spanned my entire backyard, were eroding more of my yard, and looked atrocious. Enter Jose and his team. I called Jose with an idea of how I wanted the drainage system to be laid out. When we did a walkthrough for an estimate, Jose listened to my plan and made up an even better one that would encompass all but one of my downspouts into two systems, while also respecting where I wanted the water to go. Jose and his team did all of the jobs I mentioned above in two days, going above and beyond in each case. The drainage system is absolutely perfect with premium parts throughout (we've had several days of rain since it was installed and there's no water pooling anywhere). Another unrelated contractor commented on the system after it was installed, saying "Wow, this was done right." The team re-mulched and planted grass seed in all of the places they were working. As for the tree work, not only did the tree guys remove the tree, they also took a bunch of other tree material with them (giant fallen branches from other trees, the remnants of a different tree that was cut down, and stumps from trees previously cut down). When the team re-leveled the path to my house, they power washed everything - the flagstones on the path they were re-leveling, a different concrete path to my house, my front step, and even my doormat. They also re-mulched the area around the footpath. When they filled in the eroded parts of my yard and regraded, they moved flowers in those areas to a different area and matched the general aesthetic of the yard (the grass is in a wave shape and then edged before an area with dirt and bushes). I'm a pretty picky person when it comes to work on my house, but I can't find a single fault with the job Jose and team did. They truly exceeded my expectations at a great price and I've found myself just looking out at my yards, admiring how beautiful they've become. I have several other projects in mind for the future and will be calling Virginia Drainage and Erosion again when the time comes! read more
