We were seated outside in January which was ok but I definitely couldn't take my jacket off despite the heaters. Service was good. I don't say great because at ordering I said I have a dairy allergy. I ordered the mushroom steak. When she brought it out she said, oh they finish it with butter, is that ok? Um...no? So they remade it. Second thing was I ordered the salmon which came with some type of potatoes she said were finished in butter so she suggested fries. Gotcha--thanks! But then they charged me $2 extra??? Overall food was tasty. The manager was very visible. It did take an hour for our mains to arrive but we weren't in a hurry. I do think plating could be better--the dishes weren't visually appealing. I recently came here for a private event with 20+ people so it was a fixed menu. Their private event area where we were located was actually semi-private. We had our own room, but it was near the restrooms so other restaurant patrons were coming in and out of the room to get to the restroom. Luckily, this wasn't noticeable at all. For my first course, I ate the onion soup gratinee & traditional Caesar salad. If I had to pick the better one, it was the soup. I love a Caesar salad but this one was too heavy on the anchovy taste. I can't fault the restaurant for this though because the description mentioned anchovy twice. My second course was the penne ratatouille. This was a pasta dish with eggplant, zucchini, squash, and mushrooms in a herb tomato sauce with toasted breadcrumbs and Parmesan cheese. This dish was very basic. It didn't taste like anything special whatsoever. My third course was the apple crumble. This was okay. It tasted fine, but was more of an apple cake than a crumble like I was expecting. The best part of the meal was the free bread at the beginning. It was warm and soft. Service was amazing! I was impressed with one server taking all the orders and keeping everyone satisfied with drinks. Towards the middle and end of the meal, more servers showed up to hand out food and clear dishes. Very beautifully decorated downtown French restaurant. Had a reservation for a party of 10 for a birthday party, and this place did not disappoint. Everybody at the table loved their entrées. Finished out 2025 with dinner at 39 Rue de Jean. We started with 2 types of Moules (mussels) - Mariniere and Provençal. They were both tasty but the Provençal, which was a spicy tomato base was my favorite. My bf got the Steak Tartare as an app, which was not his favorite. For my entree, I split the Shrimp Provençal, which was a shrimp pasta with a similar sauce to the mussels and a caesar salad. If you filled up on Moules and bread like me, this was a great option. Classic French food delivered flawlessly. The mariniere that came with my mussels was so rich and tasty I wanted to take it home. My wife's french onion soup was everything it should be, if a bit heavy on the cheese in her opinion (I disagree, there is NO SUCH THING as too much cheese.) Her escargot was in a luscious garlicky sauce that, again, we were fighting each other for the opportunity to sop it up with the bread service. The warm cheese fondue was amazing and is highly recommended. Service was attentive and enthusiastic. Our dining partners asked whether they bar had blue cheese stuffed olives, as they love them in their dirty martinis. The server said no, but she would stuff them herself. Unheard of! I also was a bit of a challenge, as I asked if the bar had the makings of a sazarac (I was on vacation, after all!) but I made it very clear that it was okay if not and gave her an alternative drink order if the bar didn't have the needed ingredients. While what I received was not EXACTLY a sazarac, the fact that they tried -- and came close -- was very much appreciated. My husband had the onion soup which he absolutely loved and I got the small goat cheese salad. I love that their apps come in small and bigger portion options. Had a really fantastic meal here, but a few things just weren't perfect. The cheese plate was good but didn't come with nearly enough bread to try all the cheeses properly. I had the coq au vin which was really good but not quite as rich as I have had in the past. I ordered asparagus which never arrived (I forgot to check to see if I was charged for them). The tables were very close together and the room was extremely loud, hard to talk in there, and the ceiling was stained up badly like there was a flood years ago and they never repainted. What went well?? EVERY SINGLE THING!! I've been here before, but my husband had not. He had family in town, and one member is in a wheelchair. I called ahead to see if they could handle us. They were so polite and made fabulous accommodations for her! We enjoyed delicious cocktails 1st (Not Spritzin Around was my favorite, like an Aperol Spritz on steroids) and I enjoyed 2 with brunch! The Brussels sprouts salad was good. The fresh catch was terrible. Over cooked, dry and tasteless. It was recommended by the waiter and he never even asked if I liked it. Just arrived in Charleston and we need to find somewhere for dinner. Thankfully we accidentally stumbled into Rue de Jean and had a wonderful first meal in the area. We didn't have a reservation on a Tuesday evening and that thankfully wasn't an issue. We were tired and weary travelers and needed sustenance. They say us immediately and the restaurant has a nice vibe to it. Our server was incredible, greeted us with such wonderful energy, helping us feel relaxed and at home. We got the complimentary bread and some drinks and all was wonderful! My wife complimented multiple times how well mixed and balanced her drink was. We ordered the Lambs Head special and Scallops and everything was great! Lambs Head is something we've never tried and we love trying new things, even more so we love when they are delicious. Flavors were very well done on both dishes and portions were close to European style then American so take that as you will. Our dessert was the chocolate de crem and was very good, not mind blowing, but if you love a rich chocolate taste, this is absolutely for you! Walk yourself across the street to Halls... Rue may have had better days. We were recommended to this place from a friend with high marks to the service and food quality but were disappointed in both. On entry the ambiance was a warm classic french bistro, mirrored walls, buzzy main dining room but we were escorted to a back dark corridor that smelled of cleaning supplies right on the way to the toilet. We asked and were moved (in a somewhat unfriendly way) to a front window location. It was a hint of more to come. Our server was quintessential friendly, and we ordered onion soup, Brussels with Lardons, salmon, coq au vin, chicken franchaise, a glass of wine and a beer. All totaled $140 but what started out with a bang on the apps fizzled on the entree. Onion soup was spot on. Perfect flavor balance and proportion of bread to cheese to soup/onions. Brussels w lardons for $12 was a hearty appetizer. Great crisp and loads of parm, almonds, lardons for every bite. Portion was enough to share for 4 but much for 2 adults. Salmon was cooked to our liking with a fluffy saffron rice but asparagus were meh. Kind of underwhelming for almost $30 entree. Coq au vin, which I've never had, was recommended over the Moules (in low country expect teensy mussels). The chicken was braised and came out without much to its presentation. Kind of awful if you ask me. Having not had it before I have no comparison but it was dark meat, tender and well seasoned in a red wine braise. No accoutrements or sides but my fault for not clarifying. The biggest disappointment was the chicken franchaise. Chicken was not pounded down well enough and came on literally a cool sauce of lemon butter blanc that had zero flavor. Did they use unsalted butter? So, while we loved the friendly server, would recommend only for apps and only if you can avoid the above. read more

I thought it was odd she didn't share any of the specials or anything about the menu with us -- we had to ask what the daily special was, and then I also asked if mussels are half priced on Tuesdays, which they are! The meat from the short ribs is tender and melts in your mouth. Consistently good, cooked to perfection and fairly priced food. We were so excited to come here as the reviews were amazing and the menu looked great. I'm so sad to say that, especially for the price we paid, we were pretty disappointed. Let's start with the positives: 1. The inside is beautiful and filled with vintage French art and posters. The bar fills almost the entire length of the building and the lighting and mirror behind it makes the room feel so much bigger. 2. The service was good, our server was attentive and friendly and we were in and out in about an hour. 3. The fresh bread was really delicious. 4. My fiancée had the Coq Au Vin and loved every bite, which is why we're giving the restaurant three stars. It was cooked perfectly, well seasoned, full of flavor, and everything he wanted in a dish. Now for the less glowing comments: 1. We ordered the escargot, which I was really excited, and these couldn't have been worse. First, they had been left out or cooled down because the butter garlic sauce you see in the photo was actually just barely tepid, congealed butter. I can get past cooled down butter, so we went for the meat and we were taken aback by how HUGE these snails were. Our excitement was immediately dashed when we put them in our mouths, they were overcooked, chewy, and a little tough. NOT what you want in such a delicate dish. The escargot was so bad that I didn't finish and it ruined my appetite a little. 2. Short rib is one of my favorite dishes, so I was totally ready to forget the escargot and enjoy this braised short rib. What showed up was a pot roast. Short rib and pot roast are the same cut of meat and cooked similarly, but a pot roast is huge and short rib is small. I was excited for so much meat, until I tasted it and it tasted exactly like a dry pot roast. We went to Rue de Jean last night and all I can say is *WOW*. From start to finish, incredible food but even more importantly, absolutely incredible staff. We had Dakota as our server; he was super personable, on point the entire night, quick with drinks and every course. We never felt rushed and each course was perfectly timed. We had a few short conversations with the general manager, Mike, who was also very kind, knowledgeable about the local area which helped us plan our day today. He was absolutely wonderful to speak with. I will end with this. We went to lunch yesterday and the food was delicious but the service was sorely lacking---Not at all our experience for dinner at Rue de Jean. I would give 5 stars to both the food and the service. You can get good food at many places here in Charleston, but when you connect with the server and management. It is a powerful combination that will bring us back anytime we return. Bravo! It is a perfect spot for big groups (might be a little noisy for an intimate setting), and the diverse menu has something for everyone.
