Dinner at Grill 225 was a bit underwhelming. We reserved by phone and we were given a very specific time slot indicating they were fully booked. Please note the photos... the restaurant was empty. Our server was nice until one of our friends at the table indicated that she had requested no cheese on her salad. We were taking it back when the waiter instead of picking up the dish and returning it to the kitchen for the correction chose to argue that she had not made that request. We all at the table in unison, indicated that she had in fact requested that and that we had all heard it. After this exchange, the service went downhill. No smile with our service. As you can see from the photographs, I failed to take photos of our dinner when it was served because we were all taking it back by the shift of energy and service. Once we all discussed it... We chose to put it behind us and continue with dessert. Which I did photograph. Charleston has an amazing array of dining options... Grill 225 is a good option... Great service, Caesar salad is 10/10 Filet was a 10/10 Sides- love the options- upsetting no mash potato option for family style and only baked potato available until they run out. The onion family style should be taken off. I thought I would be receiving sliced rounded onions and instead just sliced onions caramelized. More of a topping to add on to a steak. Just my opinion. Immediately loved the ambiance of this restaurant. The service was excellent! We had our favorite cocktail, the old fashion and they were great! Our food, low country boil chowder, it was ok. To me chowder has chunks of food. This was creamy but not really any food in it. It was salty. The oyster Rockefeller was not good at all. The oysters were not detached from shell, the cream spinach and cheese took over. The mussels were bland and salty . The shrimp and grits, again sub par. The shrimp were over cooked and dry. Everything was really great. Note that besides the salads, there's only 1 vegetarian meal on the menu and it was cheesy tomato in a crust like a pot pie kind of thing. I made a reservation several days in advance due to the Bridge Run March 28. So after two or three confirmation texts we get to the restaurant 10 minutes early and the entire staff was in a meeting! We went up to the Pavilion to experience the view and came back! The entire place was empty! So we asked the hostess to seat us near the front for the window view! She automatically put her attitude face on!! Ridiculous!! Nobody in there. So we got a table with a view! The food was delicious but overpriced for what you were given! The bread was amazing! They have a nitro dirty martini with chilled glasses that come with a warning label as the glass to come back to room temperature before you drink it. Where do I begin?! I'm a local from Charleston but I'd never been to this restaurant. My boyfriend and I made a reservation for 5:30 and it looked like we weren't going to make it on time. He called the restaurant and they were able to push the time one hour with no issues. Service was very friendly and convenient to make the reservation. I was worried about the dress code but I wore a nice sun dress, and my boyfriend wore a nice polo shirt, dark jeans and Timberland boots. I really thought we wouldn't be allowed in but it was not an issue. We were sat right away and immediately greeted by our waiter. He was very friendly and helpful explaining the menu and drinks. I got a Sweet Tea Nitro-tini and it was so neat! The glass comes with a warning and you have to wait 3 minutes to drink it but worth the fun experience. The don't skimp on the alcohol! We ordered Oysters Rockefeller to start and they were sooo good! I could have ordered 15 more, they are delicious. We both ordered the Prime Ribeye and it was seasoned and cooked perfectly. Absolutely mouthwatering steak and grabbed a side of fried green tomatoes. The sides are family size so for two people one side would be enough with the main meal. Despite being full to bursting after dinner, we ordered a slice of cheesecake for dessert to share. It was a large slice and even the two of us couldn't finish it. The final bill plus tip was a little over $300. It's definitely a great place if you want to spend some money, but it's a once a year kind of place for me, great for a romantic date or anniversary dinner. This is our second time at Grill 225 celebrating our anniversary. We arrived early for cocktails at the well stocked bar. They serve "Nitrotinis" which are novelty cocktails with a dash of liquid nitrogen for effect. Our table was ready promptly at our reservation time and our server, Ben was friendly and well versed in the menu and preparations. Ben took great care of us and was attentive without being overbearing. All of their steaks are aged a minimum of 42 days and masterfully prepared. I had the ribeye which may have stayed on the grill a heartbeat too long but was still delicious. My wife had the filet mignon and it was cooked to perfection. Family style sides of baked potato and baked tomatoes were also delicious. Grill 225 is one of the more elegant and romantic restaurants downtown. With low lighting and heavy wood trim, the restaurant conjures up thoughts of an old speakeasy which suits the location of this restaurant. I came here because they were known for the nitromartinis. It has been a min since I was last here but they don't have the drink I ordered. It was a nitromallow. Yep, it has liquid nitrogen with marshmallows on the top. It was basically like a s'mores martini. It pairs really well when you go up to the rooftop and enjoy it while watching the sunset. Service was wonderful, you get a cool show when the bartender prepares it. Honestly, I recommend getting any nitromartini. It was slightly expensive for a drink. read more

Grill 225 restaurant resides in the Market Pavilion Hotel and earns high marks for it's opulence and of course, location, being on the corner of S Market Street & East Bay St. Opening the Golden doors the guest is invited into a heavily dark wood theme restaurant with high ceilings contrasted to white. The restaurant has no nuances of common dining, rather it wraps itself in sophistication. To me, this is the quintessential dining experience, no holds barred on elegance and attention to details. The front of the house is spot on. They know the menu, can answer side questions about food allergies, substitutions, and what each impeccable ingredient tastes like. They are attentive to a glass half full or the timing moving from app to entrée to dessert. Moreover the staff are very good at suggestion wines, pairing it either with your meal, palate, or try to do both (not easy for bold red wine lovers along with delicate fish for example). My rule of thumb is give the servers what you're going to be eating and what types of wine (grapes and regions) and let them run with it. I did that at Grill 225 and they overachieved! For apps, I got the French Onion soup. Perfect blend of heavy beef stock, acidity I believe from Vermouth and another wine, and salinity. The onions had layers of doneness not all caramelized, but also not all barely cooked. The crouton was even buttery as the Gruyere cheese played it's melted drums on top as the band leader. My wine was a Saint Helena Cab, which had bold flavors that rounded out, tasting of red berries and oak. My date got the Tuna Tower. A very nice dish almost sushi like but taken to the next level. The layers of Tuna tartar being rigid in texture sat dominantly on the tender succulent crab. The two texture profiles played harmoniously followed by the crescendo of avocado then rice. It was a delectable orchestra of flavors mild texture differences with a heavy hand of seafood. Wonderful. For dinner I was going bold - red meat and I needed a wine to compliment the experience. My server suggested an Italian wine of Bocelli Sangiovese. It was bold yet had nice notes of berries, wood and bitters. It was a wonderful pairing as I opted for the 16oz USDA Ribeye that consisted of considerable marbling. The wine cut the fat and cleansed the palate while my significate other had the seared sea scallops. They were big, slightly caramelized, and the mushrooms, leaks and tarragon played perfectly with the white pearls of euphoria. All food was cooked to perfection. All in all, the experience is expensive but as one would expect, the attention to detail in all regards of the restaurant were spot on. The wine perfect, the staff well informed and professional, and the food fresh and flavorful. I highly suggest the destination to rub elbows with the semi-elite and see why this restaurant draws their ilk. Bravo, well done and I'll be back! read more

I traveled 11 hours for nitrotini's for my 50Th bday. The bartender brought 3. One had a smidge of smoke. The other 2 had none. The bar was not busy at all, nor was the restaurant. When the bartender finally came back about 30 minutes later, I told him there was no smoke. He said he was out of nitrogen and too busy trying to open. He was so rude and acted as if I was a bother. It was so good, but I could only eat about a third of it. The focaccia bread in the bread basket was one of my favorite things of the meal. I had the tomato pie thinking it would be a light meal, but it too was also huge - and absolutely delicious! Full of beautiful tomatoes cooked perfectly with saucy-cheesy filling and that crust! What I would have given to be able to take it to go to eat later, but we were returning to our hotel room. The salad never got smaller as I ate through it either. . It was dressed with a great dressing and sprinkled with feta cheese. My hubby's steak was delicious. He added a baked potato that they cut in half for us to share and it was so big he only ate half of his half - I couldn't even think about sharing in the other half. This restaurant did not disappoint for my 2nd visit. My best friend treated me to dinner for my birthday last weekend. We checked in at the desk, was immediately seated, and was brought champagne to start the evening. Our server, JB stopped by to wish me a Happy Birthday and looked forward to serving us. Then, the basket of bread was brought out. I absolutely love the roll with the slice of tomato on top, warm and delicious. We ordered our steak, creamed spinach and an alcohol drink. Here's when reading is fundamental. I thought I ordered a fuzzy navel. Instead I ordered a Nitro Peach Vodka. That drink was smoking, creamy, and filled with taste! The temperature of the steaks were perfect, the sides were hot and we even had leftovers for the next day. To end the night we ordered a very YUMMY warm peach cobbler with vanilla bean ice cream. This is one of the better places to grab a meal and a drink. The kind of place that I really like, leather and wood. The wine list is full of nice little gems that compliment a good piece of grilled beef, succulent chicken, fish, or shellfish. On my most recent experience we opted to share an appetizer of charred octopus and received a complimentary glass of champagne. Luke had been our waiter for the previous time as well. He is an intelligent and thoughtful person, who knows when (and when not) to check in. That's a soft skill that is awfully hard to teach. She had the charred octopus appetizer. A wonderful dish atop a bed of greens. Really large enough to share or if paired with another app, like the shrimp cocktail I enjoyed, a meal itself. Speaking of the Shrimp cocktail...5 succulent jumbo shrimp with a great Cocktail sauce. Maybe the best on the peninsula? It was really good nonetheless. For entrees, we both opted for beef that night. She had the NY Strip, I had the Ribeye. Beef here is Prime. Strip bold and beefy and the ribeye was unctuous. Well marbled the way you expect a good piece of beef to be. Cooked to perfection, juicy, and seasoned nicely. We shared a wonderful bottle of Saldo, a wonderful deep ruby colored wine from The Prisoner Wine Company. Saldo means "balance or balanced" in Spanish and the wine is a balanced blend of Zinfandel, Petite Syrah, and Syrah. Nice and spicy (think white pepper), cherry, touch of licorice, with tannins like a velvet Elvis painting! A wonderful wine to accompany a nice piece of beef. Be warned its not the cheapest place, but hey You're in Charleston, open up that wallet! LOL All in all a great place to enjoy a great meal. read more

While staying at Market Pavillion Hotel we decided to give their 4* restaurant a try. This place needs a 5 star honestly. Had read about their signature cocktail the Nitrotini on previous reviews and wanted to try that. We ordered 2 espresso Nitrotini's- WOW I wanted at least 3 more of those boys! But I knew we were there dinner. We started with escargot and French onion soup. Both were delish! Next up we ordered the 3lb Maine Lobster with asparagus and scallops with shiitake mushrooms. Both main entrees were not only presented gorgeous but tasted fantastic. For dessert we shared the vanilla crème brûlée and an after dinner drink of grand mariner. The service was nonstop. My wife and I have been coming to Charleston for 20 years. We have watched the progression of restaurants and their advance up King Street. The standards of food quality and service have truly escalated to a city of fine dining. Three night and our last night, we decided to dine at an old friend, Grill 225. Cocktails at the bar to start, ok, but slow table service. The bar was full, and there was no seating. Drinks were good, and we moved to the dining room Started with great bread! The mussels came they were very tasty, well salted. We mentioned this to our waiter. Then the lamb chops arrived with a tomato toped with spinach. Our expectations were high as the Chops we priced very high, more than a USDA prime filet. We had ordered medium! The disappointment was unbearable as 75% fatty chops arrived, chared as if they tried and covered up the lack of protein! We told the waiter, informed a manager, and even mentioned to another manager! Their attitude was sorry, but frankly, their lack of interest was very apparent. They removed the cost of the Chops, but that wasn't the point nore our expectations. There was no suggestion of a replacement or substitute protein! We pointed out the competition was out there, but no one seemed concerned! Shame a fine dining, top $, on our last night ruined our last evening! read more

I'm writing this review based on my visit back in the spring. The service was amazing. I came to the city to celebrate my birthday and noted that in my reservation. I also noted that even though I wanted a solo reservation, I wanted to be seated in an area of the restaurant that wasn't at the center of everything, but also not tucked away and hidden. The restaurant interior was beautiful and I loved my seating selection. I was near the kitchen, but I could still see out of the window and observe everyone inside the restaurant. My waiter was very pleasant. I ordered what you see in the attached photo along with the yonges island salad and then cheesecake for dessert. The food was so good. And I, for the life of me, don't remember what wine I ordered. He may have recommended something for me, but either way, I enjoyed that as well. Great portions too! I was able to take some leftovers back to my hotel. They also decorated my cheesecake in celebration of my birthday which was thoughtful.
