I hate giving bad reviews but I hate wasting money more (especially in this economy!). A friend and I grabbed 4J's while our husbands waited in line at the Fish Hut next door. We got a cold brew and an iced mocha and immediately threw it out as soon as we got in the parking lot. This is really, really bad coffee y'all. I recommend going to Stir it Up around the corner if you're looking to caffeinate. The Good: Our baristas were super perky and nice. The front of the shop had a bunch of penny candy and fun knick knacks for kids. Their bagel and bialy bin looked AMAZING. I'd definitely stopped by to grab some the next time I am in town. read more

Excellent frozen coffee! Tried the Milky Way and the Mudslide - both were delicious! They carry a variety of bagels that looked tasty but by the time we arrived the selection was picked over so we decided to stick with coffee. Like most eateries in EI, this place is terrible. Featured on their menu are waffles. I love waffles so I ordered 4. And waited for the batter to be poured. Instead, I watched the "cook" tear open 4 plastic bags of Imperial brand waffles and pop them in a toaster. What?!? Are you freaking kidding me? If I wanted Legos I'd just go to the grocery store. It's a heckuv a lot cheaper. I frantically looked for something else to salvage what was becoming a prison breakfast. Cinnamon rolls! But wait, I've seen these cinnamon rolls before. The stale ones that taste like cardboard. The twist was its self serve. So you reach in to a plastic case that's been fondled by every other hopeful customer to get your roll. I knew this would be a total waste of money likely complimented with a bacterial infection. But I was desperate so I bought one anyway. Got back to the house, took a bite and threw it out. Hey bakery owners: it's just so simple to go online and find recipes for really good cinnamon rolls. Seriously - stop insulting our pallets and your own self respect. Ambience is Ok. We tried this coffee and smoothie shop today. My caramel frappe lover gives this place two thumbs up they had just the right amount of caramel. This was even after they gave her whipped cream which she is not a big fan but the caramel Balance made up for it. Then the smoothies, my berry smoothie lover says that they did a decent job. I had quite the experience with my smoothie. I chose the strawberry and chia seed protein shake where I chose peanut butter for the base. OMG. It was the best PBJ I ever had. When I say I was drinking a PBJ it is no joke and it was so good!! Like I am Now feeling like PBJ needs to become a staple of my diet again. Now they only get 4 though because we were also hoping for some yummy bakery treats but what we saw wasn't really exciting so we left it alone. This was probably good as the protein shake is a meal. Came here because it was recommended. The guy behind the counter must've gotten up on the wrong side of the bed. Not a smile not a hello not a thank you not helpful. 4Js has the most grumpy, miserable, unwelcoming staff and atmosphere I've ever encountered at a coffee shop. We strongly support local small businesses on the island, but we'll be taking our business across the street or just over the bridge VERY soon after the cold customer service we received today. I'm feeling generous so I'm giving them a 4 star. The menu is so expansive (which almost always indicates lack of quality), but what I ordered actually surprised me. I got a iced dirty spiced chai, and it wasn't too sweet, although it was not cold enough. They do offer table tea service (in a pot), and they offer a bunch of different loose leaf teas. They even sell their tea for really cheap! Plus, they have a shwae cereal bar and other goodies (material items and baked goods). And the outdoor patio area is great for a breezy morning. So all in all, I'd say if you're a tea drinker, definitely try this place out, but if you're wanting coffee, maybe go down the street to stir it up coffee. read more

Great dark roast coffee that is better than Starbucks, an eclectic mix of stuff on the walls from Cassius Clay boxing underwater to Elvis plates, and GREAT pastries and hand maid bagels made the right way, this place is the best in the area. It is right off the EI bike path, with places to park your bike in the front as well as the back. They have both inside seating as well as outside seating off the bike path. Always switching the place up so it looks refreshed and it is a relaxing environment for coffee. Incredible lattes and definitely comes out hot and delicious Easily the best coffee quality on the island. At $7.95 a cup comparable to $5.50 across the street, however, I cannot see myself becoming an everyday regular at this place considering they boast the shortest operating hours (close@2 vs @3-6pm at the others) and highest cost of a latte on the island vs. the other main coffee shops. Owner is a cool guy but you can tell he is tired of it here and I wish him the best moving forward. Seeing the prices makes me want to skip coffee shops altogether and make mine at home. I really wish this was our first local independent coffee shop we went to while visiting the area. By far some of the best bagels(Brooklyn) be sure to get there early. We were there around 11am and there were less than a dozen to choose from. I had a chocolate peanut butter frappe that was to die for, so good. I saw many of the bad reviews reference the management at this coffee shop but we had a good experience. I love the selection of looseleaf tea they have and the others in our party loved the coffee drinks they had. We agreed that they were not generous with the ice but that's the only thing I could say was not good for our order. It's a cute shop and has places to eat inside and out. The gentleman working seemed annoyed I was there and even more annoyed that I ordered a drink. I asked what was good and he pointed to the entire menu. When I decided on the summer special "sun kissed latte" he had me repeat my order a couple times as though I had gone rogue. The pastry selection was lackluster, 1 flavor scone, 1 flavor muffin (peanut butter?) and 1 plain croissant. Maybe everyone comes before 830am and buys all the other good ones? Stopped by on a rainy summer morning after seeing the 4J's sign from the main road. After visiting EI 5+ times since 2005, I'd never seen this coffee shop. From now on, I'll be going there every morning I can. Very eclectic inside - I won't spoil it, but you could spend 30 mins alone walking around looking at signs and the interesting things for sale. Our drinks were great - particularly the spiced chai latte. Well worth a visit for a good drink when visiting EI. So the comments on the barista, owner, workers (whichever you've encountered) I've seen mentioned...I take that as part of the vibe and mystique. Part of the fun of it - but get your order right! This is my favorite local coffee and bakery. The food is delicious and the drinks are amazing. The store has an amazing atmosphere and has so many cool trinkets around that you can look at. I go here as much as I can seeing as I live in the surrounding area and I love it. So far my favorite drink is the apple chai. I don't usually leave reviews but my mom and I were disappointed with the service we received today. We were the only ones in the shop wearing masks and in front of us a couple were ordering drinks without their masks asking questions to which the the cashier happily replied. When it came time for my mom to order a drink the cashier was harsh and aggressive over her little questions and we immediately felt unwelcome. This store does not like customers who wear masks and will make that abundantly clear. Very disappointed from today we will take our business else where! read more

This place seems simple but it packs a lot of flavor. If you came to Emerald Isle without any groceries for your air bnb, you can come here and either make your own breakfast (cereal to go, breakfast sandwiches, ect) plus a decent section of food items to take back with you.
