First of all they have really fantastic bagels. Unfortunately I will not be back until they change their fees for using a credit or debit card. As they are ringing up your items they state there is a $0.75 to use a card. I stated this seemed quite high. I understand there is a charge for using cards, but today's purchase equated to 5.35%. Square charges 2.75% of the purchase not a flat fee. A cup of coffee is $1.50. So to this they would charge an additional 50% to use a card versus even at 5.0% $0.075. Why not include the processing fees in the cost of goods sold like any other modern business? I just moved to the island and am trying to buy local, but I will not be able to support this business until these policies are changed. read more

This place is really unique, offering cartoon-like decor, staples that you'd find from a convenience store, and of course many varieties of coffee. I was impressed with the baristas and the wide selection of highly caffeinated options. BUT I have to admit I was disappointed that they do not seem to be taking the COVID pandemic seriously. Staff working in close quarters and interacting with customers with no face masks. No hand sanitizer available as you walk in nor by counter. Pastries and breakfasts are still self serve and completely unchanged, open to anyone who walks in (instead of behind the counter or pre-wrapped or with gloves, etc.). I didn't try the coffee at this coffee/bake shop, but after my experience with the baked goods I probably won't. 4 J's is a lovely cafe, just across from the Food Lion on Emerald Isle. The ambiance is great, lots of wood and dark tones, and there's comfy seating on couches and chairs and a few tables. It's a large area and they've maintained a feeling of plenty of room. I went on a Friday morning (June 28th) to pick up some pastry for breakfast. I bought two cinnamon rolls, a cheese danish, and a blueberry muffin. All of the pastry looked amazing! They also have a selection of bagels that looked equally yummy. HOWEVER. Even though the pastry looked perfect, all of the items were nearly inedible, especially the cinnamon rolls, which I threw away. All of the baked goods were astoundingly dense and dry and had an off flavor that I couldn't identify. They were clearly made by someone who has no idea of what they're doing. The cheese danish appeared to be a classic croissant, but it was in shape only...inside was a dense, undercooked mess. The blueberry muffin had more blueberries that I thought could be fit into a muffin, but turned out to have no blueberry flavor whatsoever. It's almost as if they ran out of some ingredient and tried substituting something else. There didn't seem to be any sort of leavening in the pastry, so maybe they ran out of yeast and tried to substitute lard. If 4 J's is buying these things from a supplier, they need to immediately find another supplier. And if they are baking in-house, for goodness sake go watch a few Food Channel episodes and buy a copy of Rose Levy's books or a copy of Baking Illustrated and don't bake another thing until you understand what pastry is. The shop could be so much more than it is with just a little more effort. read more

These bagels hearken back to the days I lived in New York City and would go to H&H. This is the real deal--clearly boiled in water before baking. Authentic bagels--crisp and browned on the outside, with a nice shiney finish, and a moist, chewey, light dough on the inside. I didn't think I'd find authentic bagels out here in NC. To those who are disappointed with this shop's running out of bagels by mid-day, why blame the bakery? I was so disappointed to learn that my favorite coffee shop and Brooklyn Bagel Baker had moved from next door to Food Lion. It took me the better part of my vacation to discover that they had moved across the street next door to El Zarape. They have expanded their baked goods and now offer not only authentic Brooklyn Bagels but cheesecake and scones as well as marvelous danishes It's still the only place on the island that I know of to get a bagel let alone one that's perfect! read more

Leaving a 2 star review as opposed to 1 because the staff was nice. My girlfriend and I ordered 16oz vanilla Almond milk iced lattes. They literally tasted like water. It was probably the almond milk they used in addition to their espresso not being strong or well ratiod. On top of that the drinks were $15.90 before tip which is kind of outlandish. I feel bad leaving this kind of review but the coffees were just undrinkable for anyone who likes coffee and I hope that the owners can change up how they do stuff. Maybe hire someone who trains in espresso to come and show how to make good coffee. Like I hate writing these sort of reviews and I'm not even that big of a coffee head. But the coffee hear definitely needs a re-work. Even the drip coffees my friends got tasted really watered down. So my guess is they just need someone who knows coffee to come and give their input. This place made my visit to Emerald Isle extra special! If you are looking for a good place to relax, take it all in & feel welcome while sipping an espresso, this place has it. I didn't try the bagels but was assured that they are "real" NYC bagels for all of you from the city looking for a little taste of home. The owner & staff are very personable. They've created an adorable play area within their huge, open, high-ceilinged space that will make parents & children feel comfortable. You can ride your bike or walk along the gorgeous Emerald Isle bike path, stop here along the way making for an active yet leisurely experience. The world needs more of that. :-) I loved it! Emerald Isle has let us down once again. The girls that work in there were nice. But they have a sign up that says no bagels during October? I don't understand and then they didn't have any corn muffin or any light blend coffees. They have a probably about 2 or 3 dozen coffee blends/drinks to choose from and not one could be recommended as a morning/light roast blend. I don't usually leave reviews but my mom and I were disappointed with the service we received today. We were the only ones in the shop wearing masks and in front of us a couple were ordering drinks without their masks asking questions to which the the cashier happily replied. When it came time for my mom to order a drink the cashier was harsh and aggressive over her little questions and we immediately felt unwelcome. This store does not like customers who wear masks and will make that abundantly clear. Very disappointed from today we will take our business else where! read more

Update the website...got up early to get fresh bagels as the website states to "get there early " and "bagels only Saturday and Sunday ". Once we arrived, there was a tiny sign on the front door that read "no longer serving bagels ".... We've been going to 4 J's the past few years to get bagels. The bagels were great but if they no longer plan to sell the bagels, that's fine, but give your customers correct info on the website. read more

Easily the best coffee shop on the island! Great bagels and baked treats (especially the muffins, they're incredible), and the coffee is great. I paid for coffees, they did not make the correct coffee and refused to remake it after I had already paid using my card. They wanted to charge me for another drink which I refused and they dumped out my original purchase since I said I was not accepting it as I did not order that drink, they disagreed and would not refund my purchase. Apparently this business has a poor rating online and has a history of doing this same thing to many other unsuspecting patrons. Had I read their online reviews I never would have gone into their shop. They were very rude and curt even when they were making my original order which should have been a "sign". Ordered two Americanos and presented the coupon, to which we were told--by the owner--that the coupon was only good for frozen drinks, yet the coupon had no such language. A word of warning: There is a $.75 charge for using your credit card. There is a sign on the counter announcing this...which you probably won't notice until AFTER you've paid since most folks don't look down at the counter DURING their transaction. The young lady didn't make me aware of this, either, when I handed my card to her, hence the low review. 1. I understand credit card companies charge fees to use them--which is why 99.9% of businesses incorporate that cost into the cost of their products. 2. Not announcing there is a fee for using a card--again, an unusual practice for a business--makes it seem like a convenient way to make an extra $.75 when you've progressed to almost the point of no return in the transaction. She didn't seem to care, either, that I wasn't thrilled about the charge. Maybe she's seen enough folks perturbed by it to be desensitized to it by now. We did not run into the owner (see other reviews), just a very pleasant and talented female barista. She really knows how to make a HOT and flavorful latte, unlike another shop we tried earlier in our week at Emerald Isle. We also enjoyed the cranberry scones on two different occasions. Although the coffee and tea menu is more limited than in larger coffee shops, they're prepared very well and not lukewarm. The ambiance lends itself to tarrying and enjoying the experience; it also helps that the WiFi is readily available and has reasonable capacity. read more

I haven't tried the coffee but the bagels are delicious. Baked fresh every day. Classic flavor options. They get a lot of traffic for coffee so it must be good. Great bagels and pastries. I only drink the drip coffee and it is fine, but I really love the bagels. Good environment with plenty of couches near outlets to sit and work at a laptop. Plenty of things for small children to play with and color or read. If you drink drip coffee regularly here, getting a 4J's mug is the way to go. It will pay for itself by the third or fourth visit. read more
