Decent smog shop in Berkeley. They honor the Yelp 19.75 coupon, but they charge 30 bucks extra if your car is pre 1997 (these are rack rates). NEGOTIATE YOUR PRICE! Tell the lady you only have so much cash and chances are she'll take it (anywhere from $25-55 with Certificate). The guy who actually tests your car is efficient and knows cars well. It is a one man show so the lines around lunch hour and evening time can get long. You can sit there while they test your car and read Nat Geo or you can just go to the Berkeley Public Library across the street. Overall, I'd give this place 5 stars if it weren't for their really annoying pricing. Come on guys, just charge a flat rate for all cars and honor your rates...no random surprise fees. Go to 15 minute smog check on University and 6th if you can make the drive over. Jose is far more accommodating and has a flat 29 dollar fee including the certificate. No funny business. read more

Quick and easy. Took 20 minutes; I went to the library across the street 'til it was done. So much better than some middle of nowhere on San Pablo Avenue. Fast service. In and out in under 15 minutes. I only gave 4 stars because they charged me $10 for having a truck. I have a 2006 silverado so it doesnt need to go on the rollers. Just plugged in to the OBD2 port and the visual inspection. Therefore i dont understand the extra charge. read more

Their website has a "Season's Special" right now (not sure which season they're referring to) for $16.75, plus $8.25 certificate fee. It's a cash-only offer, but for $25 total I'll forgive them for that. I was able to make a small purchase in the kiosk with my ATM card and get cash back, so it was really no big deal. They don't take reservations so it's first come, first served. There were 2 people ahead of me when I arrived but I was still done in less than 30 minutes! And it is located right across the street from the North Berkeley Public Library, so there is something to do while you wait. Scam Alert! I went here and the guy first has trouble driving a manual transmission, stalling my car repeatedly to get 15 feet from the parking spot to the garage bay. Once he finally pulls it in, he pops the hood and takes quick look underneath and then begins the test. Fifteen minutes later, he calls me over to pay (cash only) and attempts to charge me $80, which is 4x the advertised price. After I said something, he scribbles it out and writes $40, saying that the $20 advertised price is only for newer cars. I grudgingly pay, even though this "older car surcharge" is not advertised anywhere. Only after paying, he then tells me that my car failed the visual inspection (i.e., that thing he did prior to doing anything else), but passed all the emissions tests. I ask why, and he says because I don't have OEM vacuum lines. My car is a 1986 Alfa Romeo Spider, of course it doesn't have original vacuum lines: they deteriorate over time and this is a user-replaceable part sold at every auto part store in CA. He says that I'm "welcome" to pay him another $40 to have it retested once I take it to a dealership to have them replaced again (with what, he won't say, since it would likely be the same vacuum lines that are in there). I ask to see where in the regulations it says anything about vacuum lines, and he refuses to show me and starts to get angry. I leave. I make an appointment with the referee program to get a second opinion. I tell the guy what happened and he says, "of course there are no OEM replacements for the vacuum lines," he retests the car, and immediately passes it. He also opens up the regulations and shows me that these vacuum lines are perfectly acceptable (and gave me a copy, in case this comes up again saying, "many of these guys don't know what they're talking about"). So the takeaway: 1) The guy at 4 Less Smog Check tried to overcharge me. 2) He knew he was going to fail my car for a bogus reason prior to doing any of the emissions tests. 3) He did the tests anyway, knowing he was going to fail me, just so that he could collect $40. 4) The state emissions test referee agreed that my car should never have been failed. read more

The smog check technician was good, but the manager/owner refused to redeem my Groupon because my vehicle was "too old" even though the Groupon description stated "$25 added to the Groupon for vehicles 95' and older"...my car is 85'. I just called this place to ask how long will they be honoring the Website Special and the young man who answered the phone said, "I don't know, I don't make up the prices". I then said to him, "I'm not calling to question the prices, I'm asking about the ending date of the Website Special.......I'm a customer" His reply.............He hangs up in my face. I then tried calling back, and he continues to hang up on the First ring. After calling back several times he finally answers my call and I then ask to speak to a Manager, the young man replies he is the Manager. I ask, "You are the Manager? but hanging up in my face? Not a very good place to get a smog check. Machine is very old and finicky and only one guy was working for the whole gas station, smog and register. I had called ahead the day before and was told not to make an appt and to just come in. So, after driving my old car an extra hour and wasting my time to get the sensors ready for the smog test, the worker didn't want to do the test because there was "too much activity in the parking lot". Well there was a truck loading the gas tanks and a few ppl getting gas but no one else waiting to get smogged. He finally agreed after I basically begged him to do the test. Then he smogged someone else's car who came after me, before he did my car. In the end he couldn't even complete the test bc the old crappy machine they have does not have its own power and my cars battery was too depleted from all the waiting and idling to power their machine. Ridiculous...they should have told me on the phone about the crappy machine when I told them my car is old and cannot idle forever and that I would be driving it an extra hour to prepare for the test. The worker told me they really need to get a new machine but he doesn't know when they will. To the owners: Get some help for ur workers or don't offer services u cannot complete! And buy a new smog machine for gosh sakes. Big Waste of my time read more

Ugh, what a terrible experience. I chose this spot because of the promise on their website "No extra fees!", claiming that every smog check spot will charge extra fees but they won't, all I needed to do was bring $28 cash. Great! Just in case, I printed out the web page. I parked my car and walked into the garage where the man sitting at the desk, with absolutely NO business, was sitting. He completely ignored me until I got right up next to him, when I believe he muttered, "What do you need?" A smog check, sir, sorry for pulling you away from your crossword puzzle. I was very polite as he begrudgingly started the paperwork, telling him that I found him on Yelp and was there for the $28 deal. OH, ACTUALLY, we charge $10 extra for diesel cars. SERIOUSLY? Luckily, I had my handy print-out and courteously showed him the claims made, that the exceptions listed DID NOT include diesel cars. He finally gave me the $28 deal. Ten minutes later, my car was smogged and I was thankfully on my way. They get one star because I got what I came for, plus a headache and a feeling that I was being cheated. Take your business somewhere else. Rude, antagonistic clerk, deceptive business practices. They don't say they don't provide free retests, but they also don't say that they do. Check that when comparing options. Cash only deal if you know the secret handshake, and buy something next door to get the cash. I found the manner of the clerk repugnant, and told him so. He followed me out to continue arguing. Really? The attendant also informed me as he followed me to my car, to continue basically telling me I was stupid, that he had a family member that worked for Yelp that would happily filter my review.
