I called Albany automotive for an appointment for an oil change. Marquis looked up my license plate number and found my car so he knew what they'd be working on. He made an appointment for 8:30 Monday morning, the first of the day. I asked if I'd be able to wait and they said yes it would be about an hour which I spent in their pleasant waiting room complete with coffee and Wi-Fi. They emailed me a checklist of the items they would be going over on my car and explained that the estimate included some items that may not need to be done. I was happy to see that the final tally was less than the estimate. They completed the work in the hour estimated and I was on my way. I'm just back from my trip to Southern California that I wanted to make sure the car was in shape for and it performed well. read more

Way over priced, i.e., literally 50% more for the same tires I could have bought from up the block (not just from a big box store or online) and on the same schedule (next day). It was my bad, I should have gotten another quote. Since it was just a flat that I had thought they'd be able to plug I didn't bother. They also already had the car and I was like, whatver, I'm sure the price will be reasonable and they're supposed to be good with all of the reviews. Service and quality were fine, but I felt a bit ripped off. So do yourself a favor and just get another quote before taking you car in to them. read more

Lets just say I know my way around a car being involved in car and motorcycle racing all my life and can recognize the good from the bad..... I had called a few places around Berkeley for a wheel alignment for my 03' Astro van only to get that disconnected feeling from the front person not knowing if they were an auto shop or a pizza parlor, just reading off a menu..... not really confidence inspiring. Through yelp I called Albany Automotive & Tire and explained my situation to Chad. Right from the jump we were talking camber, castor, toe and from the info I gave him and my thoughts, he was 100% correct in his assessment. So the work was done and my experience and take away is that this shop is based on experience and knowledge initiated and executed with great communication. This is not a shop with a bunch of video game kids running around flippin tires and over tightening lug nuts with a 500ft. lbs. air gun. I don't recommend them. They charge $70 for a $25 oil change. Had to go here for emissions testing, otherwise I would go anywhere else.

Came here for a smog check on a Saturday around 5pm, and was in & out of this place within 15mins! It's awesome that they offer $15 off smog check for checking in on Yelp. The total for a smog check came out to be $33.20. They have a waiting room with a tv that you can change the channels. read more

We stopped by this morning to do the smog check. Firsts they said come back at 1pm. Then they decided to take us. After 20 minutes as suggested we went back. They said the smog check couldn't be done because the battery was new. SO far so good. But they charged us the full $39. They also proudly said it would be $6 cheaper next time. I had the worst customer service experience of my life here and strongly urge any potential customers to stay far away from this place. This is the story: I ordered my tires online, from tirerack.com, and had them shipped to Albany Tire Service for installation; I selected Albany Tire Service in part because they advertised on Yelp with a coupon indicating "$60 off 4 tires installed." Upon arriving at the shop to drop my car off, I was told that the coupon was valid only for the installation of 4 tires purchased at Albany Tire Service. There was nothing on the coupon that indicated this to be the case.  My big mistake was to ask to speak to the manager, Jon, when I came to pick the car up.  At that point, I had accepted that I would not get the $60 off. I understood that their intention was to offer a deal for customers buying tires, but the coupon's language was still vague: it indicated a deal for the service (installation) as opposed to the product (tires). I wanted to speak to the manager to inform him of the confusing coupon and urge him to have it changed, so that at least future customers wouldn't be confused. This is how that went: Me: "Sir, there's a coupon on Yelp indicating $60 off 4 tires installed. It's quite confusing because it doesn't indicate that the tires have to be purchased at Albany Tire Service." Jon, the manager, scowling: "No." At this point I try to show him the coupon. He doesn't look at me. Me: "See, it says "4 tires installed" - it doesn't say anything like "$60 off 4 tires (including installation)."" Him: "You're reading it wrong." Me: "I'm not reading it wrong: I think it's confusing, and you might want to change --" He interrupts: "YOU ARE READING IT WRONG! There's no way we'd give $60 off tire installations! FOUR TIRES INSTALLED MEANS FOUR TIRES, BOUGHT AND INSTALLED. YOU ARE READING IT WRONG!" I try to reason with him, but he just leaves. I'm left flabbergasted. Speechless. There was nothing to suggest he would explode like that and treat a paying customer in such a way. Look, I get that people make mistakes. We all do! The coupon's vague language, by misleading potential customers, was such a mistake.  But there is nothing that justifies treating a human being with such flagrant contempt.  If anything, this should be a lesson in customer service: had Jon offered an apology, saying that he could understand how a customer might be confused and promising to update the coupon, I would have left with a completely different impression of the place.  Instead, I urge any and all potential customers to stay far away from this place. At least until Jon leaves.  There's no telling when he will explode at a customer again. You don't want that customer to be you. read more

Prices given upfront, and were similar if not lower than other shops that I called or got quotes from via yelp. Service was fast and good. No surprises. read more

My 2001 Nissan was due for a smog check and I knew it wouldn't pass because the "check engine" light was on. I had been told that the repair could be quite expensive and, since I live on Social Security, I wanted to take advantage of the Consumer Assistance Program (CAP) of the California Bureau of Automotive Repair. But first I had to find a Star Certified Smog Test AND Repair shop in my area. And they are not easy to find. To be honest, I don't remember how I stumbled onto Albany Tire (Albany Automotive & Tire Service). I used to live a few blocks away but had no idea that they had a full service garage in the back. Anyway, I took the car in, had a smog test which failed as I expected, applied for the CAP assistance which was approved, got the problem diagnosed and an estimate, got the work done and passed the smog test. Thank God that is done. All the people I met at Albany Tire, including John, the Manager, were very friendly and competent and I would highly recommend them. I will need some brake work before long and will go back there for sure. I particularly want to thank a gentleman named Marquise' who walked me through the CAP process and saved me 80% of the service charges. He was a lifesaver. read more

I had my shocks and struts replaced at Albany Automotive and Tire. They did the job on schedule and under their very reasonable estimate. Professional and courteous, l'll use them again. The location in Albany is near restaurants and stores, so you have options if you need to wait. There's even a nearby theater so you could catch a matinee. Good transit access if you need it. And as an added bonus they have a Keurig coffee maker rather than the 4 hour old battery acid you find in so many shops. read more

Had a pretty negative experience here. Had four brand new tires shipped here to change out the old ones on my car. That seemed to be fine in itself - it was pretty easy to get an appointment, the person who I spoke to on the phone was polite, the service was fairly quick and not outrageously expensive. Three days after I got the tires changed, however I drove on the highway for the first time, and began to hear a strange whirring sound from the rear passenger side. So I called and made another appointment to have it checked out. This didn't go so well. The mechanic -- Chad (who I hadn't met the first time)--sat in the car with me for a moment, took a listen, told me it sounded like the fuel pump, then said it was probably the cooling fan. He said there was no way that changing my tires had caused this problem. When I pointed out that it had started immediately after the service, his explanation was that it had probably been there all along but I hadn't heard it since my tires were probably creating so much road noise that it was covered up. It was only after I left that I really thought about it, and realized that his explanation didn't make sense, as the sound has been starting as soon as I turn my car on - NOT just when I'm moving. My tires were definitely worn, but not beyond reason - I'd been keeping an eye on them and staying on top of my 5,000 mile service with Toyota. I decided not to get my tires changed at Toyota, though, because their services are EXPENSIVE! I do recognize that it might be possible the sound starting after the tire service was a coincidence and that Albany Automotive did not cause the problem. But my main issue is with how I was treated throughout this second visit. If they had been kind and respectful, I would probably not be writing this review. But Chad made me feel like an idiot; he rolled his eyes with every question I asked, cut my questions short, and he was closer to yelling at me than speaking to me. I got the feeling he just wanted to shut me up so I'd leave. ... So I won't be going back. And I would't recommend it because of this experience. read more

I've come here a couple times for oil changes, tire changes. I love to support the local dealers especially when their labor prices are fair. When you know exactly what you want done - these guys are totally great. However, in my most recent visit, I had my 30k service done and was totally ripped off. They pushed me to change the oil again, even though I just did so 5k miles ago at their shop (my car uses synthetic and thus changes only every 10k miles). I said no, then they said I needed to have my differential oil and gear box oil changes for $150 (including inspection)! I had given them my Maintenance Log book (which they made a photocopy of) which says what needs to be done for this service so I thought they knew what they were doing. But that evening, I re-read the book and it says differential oil and gear box oil ONLY EVER needs to be changed if driving under severe conditions (e.g. towing etc), which does not apply to my car. Did they ask me? No. So they performed totally unnecessary work on my car at my expense. Needless to say, I will not be coming back. To make things worse, I could smell burning oil coming from the AC over the next day of driving. Freaked me out - but they said it's likely because they spilled some oil somewhere as opposed to a leak. Is it unreasonable to expect not to have to put up with burning oil smell in my car after service? These people do not seem to have the customers best financial interests in mind. Granted, most business do not, I'll keep searching. If you do come here for an oil change, bring your own oil. Their labor fees are fair but their fee for parts is similar to other shops/dealers (i.e. super marked up) - especially when you can get 6 qts of fully synthetic Mobile 1 from Costco for less than $30. read more

Ever since a friend whose family's been going there for decades recommended them, I've taken all of my vehicles to Albany Tire. It's been 17 years or so. In addition to personal vehicles ranging from a 1973 Mustang to a 1999 Ford Ranger, this includes getting band vehicles ready for 10,000 mile cross-continent tours. Usually these were various Ford Econolines cargo vans, but they also did some miraculous, last minute work on a 1973 Dodge RV that had a very buggy home-made electrical system. Getting to know & trust your mechanic (in this case, Gary) means I can rest easy. One time a part that they'd installed a few months previously went bad (manufacturer's defect) and they replaced & reinstalled it for free. They could've said that it was a different part & charged me and I wouldn't have known. Instead, they were honest & that means a lot! read more

I dropped my xB off in the morning and get a call in the early afternoon. For a total of $201.29, I got 4 tires mounted, alignment, and an oil change. I could've cheaped out on the oil change and done it myself, but figured it was worth it to get it all done at once. First off... these days, when you go to a tire shop, or even any other automotive service place, you don't really expect in terms of customer service. But at Albany Tire, I was pleasantly surprised by how welcoming the employees were. The main one helping me out even introduced himself with his business card as he did my paper work. Also, they have reasonable smog prices (about $48 total including fees) and their tire installation prices are fair without a bunch of ridiculous add-on fees (unlike the rip off Don's Tires). Only downside is that they are pretty busy, which means it can take a bit of time to finish the car. But overall, everything was finished relatively quickly. read more

I called recently because I had a flat tire, so I can't drive my car. They said they were too busy. I called back the next day and still too busy. I asked for a reservation for Saturday. I love working with small local give a sh*t businesses! I just mentioned yelp and they gave me 15$ off my smog check.!!!! I called the day prior for an appointment and they got us (my 2yr old and I) in and out in the time they said. I never expected to have a painless car service with a toddler in tow. as a bonus they have an extremely tot friendly waiting room with some nice toys kiddie mags and a tv. I consider Albany Automotive and Tire Service unreliable. Called ahead to ask if they could repair my tire with a screw it while I wait, and I was told yes. This was 8:10 AM May 19, 2017. When I got there a half hour later I was told I could leave the car with them and it would take a few hours. I told the person I called and was told I could have the tire repaired while I waited. They did not change their mind. They looked busy so they did not have time to help me. Called a tire company on Gilman Street in Berkeley and received the service I was promised on the phone and my care was ready to go within an hour. This company was very busy, too. read more
