I didnt know that we had too many fish of one kind, Brought them back, I guess this persons name is Mike that works there. The worst costumer service. My family comes here to buy their fishes and I'm So glad the employees allows us to pick our own fishes and catch them ourselves. It's pretty humid in there so don't expect it to be like petco freezing cold. I know it's a far drive to westminister but it's totally worth the trip to buy the variety fishes you need. My boyfriend and I bought a few pandas. Note: do mix the lobsters with and tiny bottom feeders such as the panda as the same night the lobster almost devoured our cute panda. read more

My wife and I have set up a nano freshwater shrimp tank and we called around. Granted 405 Tropical Fish is nowhere near where we live but they were more than worth the drive. No one can touch their pricing. For example most places want around $8 and up for their yellow, blue, red shrimp and 405 has them for $2 a pop!! Not only that they also have Black Shrimp for $2/ea. When we got their we weren't disappointed, the customer service from May or Mei not sure how she spells it was awesome and she's really funny too. Thank you May/Mei you did a great job very helpful!! And they have tons of food, chemicals, supplements, decor, driftwood, substrates, and much more than I can fit in here. Eric was the guy who patiently caught all of our shrimp for us. We wanted 10 Black, 10 Yellow, 5 Red, and 5 Blue. Long story short Eric was amazing because he was patient with us, didn't get all moody because we wanted something specific and more importantly he took his time caught all of our shrimp for us, bagged them by color, and packed them with plenty of air for the drive home. Thank you Eric you're awesome!! We live 2+ hours away. The shrimp got home safe and sound and we only lost 2 shrimp (1 yellow and 1 black). Considering how many we bought we were very happy to see the little fellas running around and being happy in their nano tanks. read more

I'm sorry to rate this place so low but the workers seem to just want to sell fish, not a whole lot of advice given to 1) a customer who came with children who mostly certainly keep the bettas they bought in a jar 2) a customer who asked if a certain fish was aggressive and got the reply "not too aggressive". They seem to not care at all for health and welfare of the fishes. Tanks were ok looking, some tanks had empty nerite shells, they sell those neon painted fishes, Prices on the fishes seem good but I won't be supporting. Special shout out to Sonny and Sam, who used to let us at 7 and 10 year old kids run through your fish shop and hooked us up with little guppies and goldfishes. My older brothers and I lived behind 405 fish shop and would walk to their store once or twice a week and became buddies with the owners who are the most funny and humble individuals you'll ever have the pleasure of meeting. Great fish store. Has everything an aquarist could want. 405 tropical fish has tanks, stands, a wide variety of food, fake plants and rocks, live plants, aquarium filters, pumps, lights... The list goes on and on! They have three aisles of fish, depending on what day you go in depicts the amount of fish in stock. Fish are always healthy and disease free. Aisle on the far left is salt water, middle aisle is their tropical selection, and the far right aisle is their aggressive fish. They often have turtles, crabs and small freshwater lobsters! Workers are very friendly and funny. They do have strong accents. The store is very warm inside do to the lack of air conditioning and many filters and pumps. 405 tropical fish has become my go to aquarium supplies store and has completely wiped out their competition. I've been coming here for about a year now since my boyfriend is really interested in fish. I only recently started my own fish tank about a month or two ago. Every time I come here, the workers have been super helpful and friendly. You can really tell that they care about their fish and their customers. Their fish are a lot cheaper and HEALTHIER than Tong's tropical fish store. This is the best fish store in LA/OC in my opinion and I've been to A LOT of stores. I always find hard to find fish here much cheaper than anywhere else. I live about 15 miles away, but driving here is always worth it. I bought some black barred silver dollars yesterday. The usual price for these fish is about $20, but they had them on sale for $10. I bought all of them and they sold them to me for $8 each. If you like to raise monster fish or oddball fish, this is the best store for you. They have stuff that 90% of other stores don't have like black arowanas and flagtail fish. The prices on the window are already pretty good, but if you haggle a little bit (and they usually let you bargain there), you can get great deals. Oh yeah, the frozen food is the best too. You can buy hikari frozen bloodworms for $2 a pack there and the exact same one by my house is $3.50. The owners are all cool, especially the older guy with glasses. The owners are Thai (I am too) and the older guy told me all about how he used to sell tropical fish in Thailand and the fish he used to raise in his pond. That guy knows more about fish than any other owner I've talked to. The staff here is great (the only thing is sometimes you have to flag them down to get some help). Anyway, this store has the best selection and best pricing by far in the area. 5 Stars... Thai people rock! read more

This fish store is my preferred one when it comes to purchasing new fish for my aquarium. In my experience, they have the healthiest fish and the best prices, which makes the 14-mile drive from my home worthwhile. They are conveniently located right off the 405 Freeway (hence the name), just down the street from the Westminster Mall and in a strip mall anchored by a Jon's Marketplace supermarket. The inside of the store has a wide selection of new tanks and accessories, fish food, decorations and miscellaneous supplies. The rear of the store contains all the fish for sale. 405 has a decent inventory of freshwater fish. There is one aisle with a limited selection of salt water fish. I thought during one visit, I spotted a couple of piranha fish at the end of one aisle in a darkened tank. I'm not sure if it's legal to own them here in California, but I knew I wasn't going to buy them! This store also have very knowledgeable, friendly staff. Someone else mentioned that the store is owned by Thai people, and even though it can be hard to understand what they're saying, they always take the time to answer my questions and offer advice, if needed. One time several years ago, the owner even let me catch some fish that I wanted to purchase, since he was busy helping other customers that particular day! I seem to be getting lucky with this place. Other reviewers have said it's either good or so-so, but I've been getting deals here. I've upgraded tanks and was looking to up the number of my black neon tetras. I called them up at about noon and they had some. They said they were $1 a piece, so off I went. Browsed around to see what they have before finding the black neons. They were in good shape, though probably close to full grown. Picked up 5. At the register, the owner rang it up as $7.50. "Wait, didn't you tell me over the phone there were a buck a piece?" He asks the guy who bagged my fish who answers something in Thai and says "Oh. $5 then. Sorry. The usually $1.50 each." I smile as I hand over the money and say "No problem. Just checking." Fish secured, I bug out for home. read more

I've been going here for many years from when I was a kid. I have always bought fish from this place and none have perished during transportation and even a day after still strong. Now my fish have grown to a large size to the point where I trade them in for a younger one and some food. The price for the fish is worth it seeing that they are healthy and ready for a new home. Also they give discounts if you buy a lot. I've been to other fish stores and they don't have discounts. Great selection of freshwater fish to add to your aquarium. They have tetras, algae eaters, silver arowana, peacock bass, african cichlids, red parrotfish, oscars, barbs, koi, crayfish or lobster, redtail catfish, red cherry shrimp, sturgeon, snowflake eels, stonefish, tadpoles, newts, crabs, flowerhorns, jardinis, and many more. They have a section all for saltwater fish too! The people that work there know a lot about fish and will be there to answer any questions. You could ask what fish is ok to put together in the same tank. Some fish are aggressive and some are not. You could ask about the health of your fish. They have treatments for parasites, ick, fin rot, etc... Sometimes there are dead fish in the tank not because they were sick but it could be another fish had beaten them up. Or the fish had just arrived and stress had gotten to a few of them. They get a shipment of fish monday or tuesday. The guys there know to at least acclimate them to the tank before taking them out of the bag. So there would be less stress on the fish and in a few days they'll be alright. Stress kills fish but when relieved they'll be in good condition in a few days. I reccomend waiting a few days before purchasing the fish to give them a chance to recover but thats if they had just came in the day you were there. Oto's not making it through are a common issue... but guppies? * scratches head * I suppose they were already sick at the store cause' my water parameters are fine + I did the acclimation process correctly. I was actually pretty surprised going in here. I thought it be dirtier and dingier, but it was actually fairly clean. Not the greatest selection of saltwater fish and corals, but not the worst I've seen either. Larger selection of freshwater stuff, plus they had a weird golden neon tetra that I've never seen before. This is one my roommate goes to quite a bit, but I can't trust them. For one, their fish don't seem that healthy. When my roommate started setting up his saltwater tank, they seemed just interested in selling him as much stuff for it as possible, without worrying about whether his fish would live or not. Love this fish store. Have been here multiple times and the owner and workers are always super helpful. One time I bought a gourami that didn't take to my tank very well. I thought it was the fish but the owner immediately know that the temperature was too cold. He said they were tropical fish and needed a warm tank. A $20 heater and a fistful of fish later my tank is happy and lively again. My kids love coming here. It's their reward. I also bring my nephews and nieces out to by fish for my tank. This is by far my favorite aquarium fish store for miles around. I have visited numerous other fish stores in OC and they are either way too expensive or they have a lousy inventory of fish and supplies . . . or both. This place, on the other hand, has everything you need in terms of fish, supplies, and a staff that is friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Best of all their prices are very fair. Only once have I had an issue with external parasites on the fancy goldfish i bought, but the parasites were easy to remove, and besides, new fish should always be quarantined before you introduce them to your main tank in order to catch things like this before they morph into a big problem. After all, isnt most of the fish inventory at local fish stores from the same farms or suppliers? I won't waste my time going to other nearby stores. Some of them dont even know the names of the different varieties of goldfish they sell. read more

THE BEST FISH STORE IN LA/OC! I love this place, I literally drive all the way from Newport Beach just to get their expert advice. If you're into Betta Fish, this is also the best place for you!! They have all types of Betta things and they really offer the best care for that specific breed, which you will not find at your local pet store which sells their fish in a "Death Cup". Interestingly, they also sell wild-type bettas which are gigantic and beautiful!! On one occasion I was trying to modify/customize the filter-output on my tank (Fluval Spec V) because the flow was too strong for my Betta even when I had it on the lowest setting. He was struggling to swim, and I need to figure out a way to divert the water flow without compromising filtration. Around the store, they sell various odds and ends for all things fish/tank/filter related (i.e. PVC, tubing, motors, plastic bits, everything!) The man working the counter that day (im assuming, hes the owner?) personally walked me around the store, and together he totally helped me to MacGuyver the best filter output I have ever seen! Best of all, all the parts were under $5 in total! A really good deal!! On a different occasion, I had to go in because my older Betta was suffering from Velvet. The woman working (younger with glasses, I'm sorry I don't remember her name!) helped me find the best solution. When I asked her about the different medications, she literally knew all the answers + more. I've been keeping fish for years, I am an aquarium nerd/ self-proclaimed fish expert, and she gave me epic advice that I had not heard before. She also highly recommended that I opt for more herbal/natural remedies with Bettas versus using harsh medicines that are full of Copper (which often do more harm than good). When I realized that she really wanted me to buy the $2 natural medicine (Betta Revive) over something more abrasive and more expensive (SeaChem's Paraguard $12), I really felt like she cared about my fish. I cannot recommend this place enough, they answer all the questions and the advice they offer is 100% right every time. FYI, my betta is doing great now. Thank you!! read more

I have worked for a fish store, visited many and this store is definitely in the top 3 if not top two. My brother lives in Costa Mesa so when I come down, I pick up whatever I need fish wise. I live in Palmdale, and for those of you who don't know where that is, its about a two hour drive. I LOVE this place. The people are very knowledgeable and not like Petco knowledgeable. They know their fish and are such great people. I bought an aro from them who made the two hour car ride home and is doing great. Before I moved to LA I was going here for about 8 years for my fresh/saltwater fish tank needs. They have a variety of fish, corals, and live plants to select from. Amazing prices, too. If you're a new customer, they'll even cut you great deals on your total. If you're into bettas like me, this place is heaven for you. They have short tails(Plakat) for $3 each. Females are $2. This is one of my go to places in Orange County for freshwater fish. Their selection is honestly one of the best I have seen, and I go to EVERY store in OC, trust me. Not only is their selection great, but their prices are fantastic. I can always count on a great deal here when shopping for some stock. They also do a good job with maintaining the look of the tanks, and care for the fish. Very rarely do i see dead fish in their tanks (unlike alot of other places I frequent), and I think that is huge, and shows they do care. The owner Don is a very kind man, and is always willing to help with questions. He special ordered me a bow front glass top for my aquarium at the fraction of the cost that I have found online. 405 Fish is good if you are looking for some good fish at a very cheap price. The place is in a strip mall off the 405, hence their name, and offer the best prices around for their fish. You can even negotiate them down if you buy a good many fish there, I would say most their prices posted are suggested retail. The only bad part is that the fish are not particularly healthy consistantly, and they lack a good selection in saltwater fishes.
